Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Evelyn Miller

DANVILLE, Va. - Evelyn Ellison Miller, 64, of 145 Confederate Ave., died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, at the residence.
Born March 19, 1936 in Anderson, S.C., she was the daughter of William Jones Ellison and Novice Pettigrew Ellison who survives.
She was a graduate of Furman University and received a Master of Education degree from Duke University.
She was married August 6, 1960 to Kenneth M. Miller, who survives.
She had been a resident of Danville since 1958, taught in the Danville Public School for 15 years, and was on the faculty at Averett College until she retired in 1995. She served as Chair of the Education Department and Director of Student Teaching at Averett.
She was an active member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Aldersgate Choir along with other positions of responsibility including past chairman of the Church Council on Ministries.
She was active in several community organizations including the Wednesday Club and the start up program of Volunteers for the Danville Science Center.
Survivors include in addition to her husband and mother, a brother, R. Curtis Ellison of Framingham, Mass.
The funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Jonathan Bennett officiating. Private burial will be in Mountain View cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Townes Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
The family requests that memorials be sent to Mount Vernon United Methodist Church Foundation - Music, 107 West Main Street, Danville, VA 24541. Townes Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements.

‘Smokie’ Peek

RINGGOLD, Va. - Maynard Wayne "Smokie" Peek, 58, of 2948 Rocksprings Road, died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at the residence.
Born March 8, 1942, he was the son of Roy Frank Peek and Virgie Griffen Peek.
He was married to Violet May Peek, who survives. He lived his entire life in the Ringgold community and worked for V&J Construction. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include in addition to his wife, three daughters, Monica P. Worley of Blairs, Misty P. Parrish of Ringgold, and Melanie P. Little of Jackson, N.C.; three step-children, Kristy Boyd of Dry Fork, William Norman Korth of Greensboro, N.C., and Daniel Wayne Clark of California; one sister, Hazel P. Tate of Ringgold; three grandsons and two step-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Frank R. Peek and Thomas V. Peek.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at the graveside at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. J. Brian Edwards officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and at other times, at the residences of Kristy Boyd, 715 F.C. Beverly Road in Dry Fork and Misty P. Parrish, 1225 Fall Creek Road in Ringgold.
Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Maggie Soyars

BROSVILLE, Va. - Maggie Owen Soyars, 90, of 365 West Withers Road, died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at the residence after a decline in health since September.
Born January 10, 1911, in the Brosville community of Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Thomas Madison "Matt" Owen and Nora Shumate Owen.
She was married July 10, 1931 to Edd Withers Soyars, who predeceased her.
She had lived in the Brosville community all her life and was a homemaker. She was a member of Vandola Baptist Church and was active in Sunday School and the W.M.U. until her illness.
Survivors include one daughter, June Tempest Soyars of the residence; and one sister, Zella Owen Inman of Brosville.
She was predeceased by seven brothers and three sisters.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Rick Lancaster officiating. Interment icon will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, and at other times at the residence.
Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Annie Worley

DRY FORK, Va. - Annie Crane Worley, 99, of White Oak Circle, died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001 at the Roman Eagle Memorial Home
Born May 6, 1901, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Booker Crane and Martha Owen Crane.
She was married to Willie Walker Worley, who predeceased her.
She was a member of Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Church and was a Sunday school teacher.
Survivors include, six daughters, Martha. W. Neal of Danville, Deane W. Shelton of Dry Fork, Ina W. Carter of Danville, Flora W. Gregson of Danville, Narvie W. Williamson of Ashbero N.C., Charlotte W. Underwood of Rockmart, Ga.; two sons, James Carroll Worley of Danville and Willie W. Worley of Danville; one sister Elsie Mae Crane of Dry Fork; twenty-one grandchildren, twenty-five great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; ten step-grandchildren and eight step great-great grandchildren. She was predeceased by one son, Clyde D. Worley. She was also predeceased by two sisters, Onedia C. Murphy and Beulah Murphy; three brothers, Frank Crane, Howard Crane, Ryland Crane.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at the Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Kenneth Terry, the Rev. Todd Posey and Timothy Worley officiating. Interment icon will be at the Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery in Dry Fork, Va.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Wednesday at Scott Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of her daughter Ina W. Carter, 4400 Mt. View Road, Danville, Va.
In liue of flowers the family suggest contributions be made to Emanual Pentecostal Holiness Church Builders Fund or the Social Hall Building Fund or a charity of their choice.

Mary Brown

MT. PLEASENT, S.C. - Mary Sifford Brown died Tuesday morning January 30, 2001 at the East Cooper Regional Medical Center in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina.
Born July 4, 1902 in Salisbury, North Carolina, Mary was the eldest daughter of Fannie Davis and Wiley Lee Sifford. She received her education in Salisbury and came to Danville in 1923 when she married Luther C. Brown. She worked with her husband and his brother, Marcus, in their business, the Brown Jewelry Company.
She was one of the early members of the new Lutheran church in Danville and throughout her lifetime was active in the life of Ascension Lutheran Church. She is the last charter member of the Kaufman-Bryan Chapter of the Eastern Star; also she was a charter member of the Town and Country Garden Club of Westover Hills. Since 1995 she has resided at the Franke Home in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina.
She was a gracious hostess, a kind friend in her neighborhood and a gentle mother to her two daughters who survive her, Mary Frances and her husband, Carl Ritchie, of Summerville, SC, and Catherine Sue and her husband, Robert Pickett of Charlottesville, VA. She delighted in her six grandchildren, Mary Ritchie of Winston-Salem, NC., Luther Ritchie of Raleigh, NC., Debbie Fox of Memphis, Tenn., Martha Mountain of Summerville, SC., Abigail Ricks of Danville and Peter Pickett of Lexington, KY. She also has six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband who died in 1972, she was predeceased by five brothers, James, Luke, Ralph, Frank, and Clifton Sifford. She is survived by one sister, Ruth Carpenter of Columbia, SC., and one brother Ray Sifford of Charlotte, NC.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Saturday at Ascension Lutheran Church by Pastor Caldwell N. Day. Interment icon will follow at Highland Burial Park. Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements where the family will receive friends on Friday evening from 7:00-8:30 P.M. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ascension Lutheran Church, 314 West Main Street, Danville, VA 24541.

Edward Cain

DANVILLE, Va. - Edward Franklin Cain, age 64, died unexpectedly Thursday morning February 1, 2001 at his residence of 145 Shady Lane, Danville.
Mr. Cain was born in Danville on June 24, 1936, a son of the late Neal Cain and Lillian Maude Davis Cain.
He was married to Elsie Cook Cain who died in 1994.
Mr. Cain had made his home in Danville all of his life where he worked for Rush Wholesale Company for a number of years before retiring, and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his cherished friend: Nancy Ann Denny of Danville, and six daughters: Cynthia Melton of Hurdle Mills, North Carolina, and Cathy Cieslak of Louisville, Kentucky, and Kelly Peterson of Keeling, and Christy Cain of Chilhowie, and Carla Perkins of Gretna, and Carter Rae Tarwater of Mt. Dora, Florida, and one sister: Lois Cox of Ruffin, North Carolina, and nine Grandchildren also survive.
The memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Sunday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Daryl Joyce. The interment will be at a later date at Danville Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday evening from 7:00-8:30 P.M., and memorial contributions may be made to the First Church of the Bretheren, 37 Glen Oak Drive Danville, VA 24541.

Bernice Clark

DRY FORK, Va. - Bernice Farthing Clark, 74, of 13201 Mount Cross Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center after a period of declining health.
Born Feb 11, 1926, she was the daughter of Lawrence Austin Farthing and Lottie Mae Brown Farthing.
She was married to Delbert D. Clark and spent most of her life in Danville. She was retired from the #5 Spin at Dan River Mills. She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include three daughters, Vicky C. Overstreet of Keeling, Donna C. Reece of Chatham, Deborah C. Flippen of Danville; one son, Michael D. Clark of Williamsburg; three sisters Gaynell Bateman of Brosville, Vera Bradner of Chatham, Molly Gay of Roanoke Rapids; 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Allen Holder officiating. Interment icon will follow at the Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and at other times at the residence of Vicky Overstreet, 100753 Old Richmond Road (Route 360).

Ruth Epps

DANVILLE, Va. - Ruth Terry Epps, 80, of Roman Eagle Nursing Home, died Feb. 1, 2001.
Born, Dec. 10, 1920, in Halifax County. She was the daughter of Mr. Samuel H. Terry and Mrs. Ava M. Terry.
Survivors include, one daughter, Geraldine Loftis of Halifax; one son, Robert E. Epps, Jr. of Halifax; three sisters, Elizebeth T. Hunnicutt of Sutherlin, Martha Rowland of South Boston, Ava Belle Martin, of Lynchburg; five grandchildren,; one step grandchild; four great-grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one son, Hurley Epps of Danville.; one daughter, Linda Ruth Hudson and one grandson Michael Hudon.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Latta Terry and the Rev. Coy Terry officiating. Interment icon will take place at Halifax Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8;30 p.m. Friday at Powell Funeral Home and at other times at the home of her daughter Geraldine Loftis of Halifax.
Powell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Martha Fitzgerald

CHATHAM, Va. - Martha M. Fitzgerald, 76, of 196 Friendship Road, Extension, Chatham, died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, at the residence.
Born Oct. 3, 1924 in Halifax County, she was the daughter of John Logan and Rebecca Marr Logan.
She was married to Hale Fitzgerald, who survives her. She was a homemaker and a member of the Little Mt. Zion Pentecostal Holiness Church in Chatham where she served on the Usher Board.
Survivors include, in addition to her husband, two daughters, Lillie Frances Jeter of Sutherlin, and Martha Ann Hodnett of Columbus, Ga.; four sons, John Thomas Fitzgerald of Atlanta, Ga., James Lewis Fitzgerald of Manasas, Va., Andrew Morris Fitzgerald of Columbus, Ohio, and Willie Lee Fitzgerald of Lawton, Okla.; one sister, Esther Anderson of Chatham, sixteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one son, Hale Fitzgerald, Jr.; one daughter, Mary Elizabeth Royal; one brother, George Washington "Buck" Marr and one sister, Clarine Fitzgerald.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at the Little Mt. Zion Pentecostal Holiness Church with Elder Mandoria Hayes officiating and an interment at the New Jerusalem Holiness Church cemetery in Java.
Miller Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Adelaide Henry

DANVILLE, Va. - Adelaide B. Henry, 70, of 312 Old Quarry Road, Danville, died Wednesday Jan. 31, 2001 at the residence of her brother.
Born October 30, 1930 in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Marie B. Walker.
She was a member of Shockoe Baptist Church and was a member of the Senior choir.
She was also a member of the Shockoe Courts of Clanthe Lodge #250 and was retired from Dimon Tobacco Company.
Survivors include one brother, Carsie Walker of Danville; nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Shockoe Baptist Church with the Rev. Kevin M. McNeill officiating. Interment icon will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Carsie and Carolyn Walker, 312 Old Quarry Road, Danville. Howerton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
