Mildred Snead

DANVILLE, Va. - Mildred Moseley Snead, 85, of 607 Brooke Drive, died Friday, March 2, 2001 at the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 15, 1915 in West Point, she was the daughter of Henry Edmonds Moseley and Zelvia Rhodes Moseley Baker.
She was married to Evard F. Snead, who predeceased her in 1958. She had lived most of her life in Danville and worked for Dan River Inc. before her retirement. She was an active member of Melville Avenue Baptist Church and was past president of Pittsylvania County Womens Missionary Union.
Survivors include four daughters, Charlene Lynch Rogers of Glen Burnie, Md., Nancylee Benyunes Bagwell of South Boston, Sandra Lynch Fleming and Debbie L. Snead, both of Danville; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by three sisters, Thelma Clifton, Louise Ireson and Myrtle Young.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Melville Avenue Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Swanson officiating. A private interment will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will be receiving friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Townes Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
The family suggests that memorials may be sent to Melville Avenue Baptist Church for Annie Armstrong and Lottie Moon Missions.
Townes Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements.

Girard Thompson

CHATHAM, Va. - Dr. Girard Vaden Thompson, a leader in education and a family physician in Pittsylvania County for more than 60 years, died Thursday at his home following a lengthy illness. He was 92.
Dr. Thompson was born in Chatham on July 10, 1908, to Girard Estes Thompson and Irene Vaden Thompson. He attended public schools, the University of Richmond and graduated from pharmacy and medical schools at the Medical College of Virginia. He practiced pharmacy in his father's drug store before going to medical school. He began his family practice in Chatham in 1937 and interrupted it only for service in World War II, as a captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in the Persian Gulf Command.
Dr. Thompson served as chairman of the Pittsylvania County School Board and chairman of the board at Hargrave Military Academy. As a member of the county school board, he helped raise support for a bond issue to replace one- and two-room schools with modern buildings.
He was an active member of the Virginia Medical Society, where he was a chairman of the political action committee. Dr. Thompson was a former director of the Bank of Chatham and a member of the Danville-Pittsylvania Academy of Medicine, the Virginia Academy of Family Practice, the Southern Medical Association and the American Medical Association.
He was a deacon at Chatham Baptist Church and a member of Chatham Rotary Club. He received the Citizen of the Year award in 1992 from the Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce. Dr. Thompson also was an honorary member of the Garden Club of Virginia for his work to maintain Gilmer Court in Chatham.
Dr. Thompson is survived by his wife, Mary Helen Brock Thompson of Chatham; a daughter, Elizabeth Thompson Zimmerman of Hampton, Va.; two sons, Dr. Girard V. Thompson Jr., of Chatham, and Estes C. Thompson II of Raleigh, N.C. He was preceded in death by a son, Stephen Brock Thompson.
Also surviving are a sister, Carolyn Thompson Broaddus of Richmond and a brother, Hon. W. Carrington Thompson of Chatham.
Dr. Thompson has 10 grandchildren: Craig B. Zimmerman of Los Angeles; Charles H. Zimmerman III of Richmond; Polly Zimmerman Lock of Raleigh; Anna B. Thompson and E. Carter Thompson III, both of Raleigh; Dr. Stephen C. Thompson of Chatham; Girard V. Thompson III of Baltimore; Carolyn T. Dudley of Gloucester, Va.; John W. Thompson of Clarksville and Richard S. Thompson of Chatham.
He also is survived by 13 great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 4, at Chatham Baptist Church with burial afterward in Chatham Burial Park. Visitation is Saturday, 7-8 p.m., at Scott Funeral Home, Chatham.
Memorial Donations may be made to Hargrave Military Academy, Chatham Baptist Church or the Chatham Rescue Squad.

Charles Windley

CHATHAM, Va. - Charles "Charlie" Tayloe Windley age 63 of 281 Beverley Heights Road Chatham, Virginia died Thursday March 1, 2001 at his residence. Mr. Windley was born November 4, 1937 in Bath, North Carolina. He was the son of the late Charlie Anderson Windley and Maggie Waters Windley. He is survived by his wife Louise Moore Windley of the residence. He is also survived by one daughter, Wendy W. Colbert of Chesterfield; Son-in-Law, Phillip L. Colbert, Jr. of Chesterfield; one grandson, Phillip Lee Colbert, III; one granddaughter, Taylor Ann Colbert; Mother-in-Law, Dorthy Osborne Moore of Chatham. He was predeceased by one brother, Franklin David Windley. He was a member of Payneton United Methodist Church and was a Charter Member of Everett Church of Christ. He also owned and operated the Art Barber Shop in Chatham for 43 years.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday March 4, 2001 at 2:00 P.M. from the Payneton United Methodist Church by Rev. Thomas Boggs and Mr. Curtis English. Interment icon will be in the Wagnor Family cemetery in Chatham, Virginia. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday, March 3, 2001 at Scott Funeral Home and at other times will be at the residence 281 Beverley Heights. The family suggests in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to the Payneton United Methodist Church building fund. Scott Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Leonard Wray

ALTAVISTA, Va. - Leonard Louis Wray, 55, of 807 13th Street, Altavista, died Friday, March 2, 2001 at the residence.
Born Jan. 17, 1946, he was the son of Percy E. Wray and Josephine Lovelace Wray.
He attended the Campbell County School system and graduated from Howard University.
He worked as a teacher until his retirement and was a United States Army veteran serving in the Vietnam war. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Altavista where he was assistant Sunday School superintendent, a member of the youth committee, and beginners Sunday School teacher.
Survivors include one son, O'Bami Wray and five sisters, Elaine Clark of Butler, Pa., Joyce Coleman of Altavista, Janet Wray of Cottage City, Md., Viola Craft of Hurt and Hilda Turner of Chesterfield.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by three brothers, William Wray, Percy Wray Jr., Thomas Wray and one sister, Sarah Christian.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church in Altavista with the Rev. James W. Brown officiating. Interment icon will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will be at the residence of Joyce Coleman, 712 15th Street, Altavista.
Miller Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements.

Virginia Wright

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Virginia B. Wright, 87, of the 3100 block of Shore Drive, died Thursday, March 1, 2001 at Westminster Canterbury.
She was married to Nicholas C. Wright, who predeceased her. She was a native of Danville and had lived in Norfolk for 58 years. She was an active member of the Circle of Service of the Kings Daughter's Hospital, an honorary member of the Board of the Auxiliary to the Medical Center Hospitals, Women's Council of the Navy League, Women's Auxiliary for the Boys Clubs, Lochaven Garden Club, and a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd.
Survivors include two sons, Nicholas C. Wright Jr., William K. Wright and four grandchildren.
The memorial service will be held 11:30 a.m. Monday at the Church of the Good Shepherd with the Rev. Ross Wright officiating. A private interment will follow.
The family will be receiving friends 2-5 p.m. at the home of William Wright, 221 76th Street, Virginia Beach.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the South Hampton Roads Boys and Girls Clubs, 3415 Azalea Garden Road, Norfolk, VA 23513.
H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts. Laskin Road Chapel will be in charge of arrangements.

Ruby Atkins

DANVILLE, Va. - Ruby Judson Dix Atkins, 89, formerly of 826 Old Mayfield Road, died March 4, 2001, at Riverside Health Care Center in Saluda, Va.
Born Sept. 20, 1911, She was a daughter of Berry Roy Dix and Harriet Jordan Dix.
She was married to Henry Noel Atkins who predeceases her Dec. 2, 1987. She lived most of her life in Danville and Pissylvania County. She has spent the past three years in Saluda, Va. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Methodist Temple in Danville.
Survivors include one son, Harold Lee Atkins, of Hartfield, Va.; one daughter, Margie Atkins Stroud of Waterview, Va. six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and four great-great- grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one sister, Pearlie Dix Burnett Hudgins.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Methodist Temple with the Rev. Richard Morris officiating. Interment icon will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, and at other times at the residence of Beth and Harold Chattin, 235 Woodside Road, Danville, Va.
Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Bernice Davis

RINGGOLD, Va. - Bernice L. Davis, 79, of 1420 Old Quarry Road, died Saturday March 3, 2001, at her residence
Born Nov. 12, 1921, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of George Fuller and Bessie Cobbs Fuller.
She was married to Walter Davis who predeceased her.
Survivors include one sister, Stella Walker of Danville and three grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Apostolic Holiness Church, Ringgold, with the Rev. Rufus Fuller officiating. Interment icon will follow at the Hackberry Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 1420 Old Quarry Road, Ringgold.

Margaret Lovell

Martinsville, Va. - Margaret Moss Liles Lovell, 87, of Martinsville, died Sunday, March 4, 2001, at Blue Ridge Rehab.
Born May 29, 1913, in Danville, she was the daughter of Thomas E. Moss and Julia Smith Moss. At one time she was associated with Dixie Pig Barbecue in Martinsville.
Survivors include two daughters, Dixie L. Henderson of Lynchburg and Vickie L. Anderson of Richmond, Ky., and five grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at McKee-Stone Funeral Services with the Rev. J.D. Harmon officiating. Interment icon will follow at the Moss Family cemetery near Danville.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at McKee-Stone Funeral Services.

Imogene Pittman

Danville, Va. - Imogene Adkins Pittman, 73, of 564 Ingram Street, died March 3, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health.
Born Dec. 27, 1927, she was the daughter of Clifton Adkins and Eddie Adkins.
She was married to Clyde Pittman. She was of Christian faith. She was a graduate of Stratford College. She was a patient at Riverside Nursing Home for 18 months.
A memorial service will be held 7 p.m. Tuesday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jack Oaks officiating.
The family will be at her cousins, Thelma Scearce, 564 Ingram Street.
Barker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Donald Purcell

BASSETT, Va. - Donald Lee Purcell, 54, of 77 Spruce St., died Sunday at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville.
Born in Carroll County, he was the son of Vada Brown Purcell Martin and Wendell Hugh Purcell.
He was a part owner of The Guitar Shack. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He was affiliated with the Protestant faith.
Survivors include one son, Cory Purcell of Bassett; four brothers, Roscoe T. Brown and Bill Brown, both of Bassett, Charles D. Brown of Collinsville and Rev. Walter H. Brown of Martinsville; two half brothers, Dwayne Martin and Bradley Martin; two sisters, Sylvia Hopkins of Collinsville and Doris Jefferson of Bassett; four half sisters, Deborah Ellis, Patricia Ezzyk, Rochelle Sorah and Desire Martin.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his foster parents, grandparents and a daughter, Angela Purcell.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at Roselawn Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Tim Whiteheart officiating. Military rites will be given by the Martinsville and Henry County Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends at noon on Wednesday at the funeral home.
