Alner Ralph Brown

RUFFIN, N.C. - Alner Ralph Brown, of 9039 Parks Springs Road, died Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Feb. 22, 1915, in Caswell County, he was the son of James Brown and Ollie Stamps Brown.

He was raised by his grandparents, Morris and Edith Brown.

He was a member of Red Hill Baptist Church and was a retired employee of Burlington Industries.

He is survived by his wife, Bessie Stanback Brown; three sons, James Alner Brown of Hampton, Va., Willie L. Brown of Hamden, Conn. and Edward "Eddie" Brown of Ruffin; two daughters, Dorothy Mae Williams of Los Angeles, Calif. and Janett Marie Neabors of New Haven, Conn.; two sisters, Izatta Williams of Mebane and Eutrulia Luckett of Pittsburgh, Pa., eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by four brothers, William Henry, Bobby and James Walter Stamps and James Brown.

The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Red Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Gregory Hopkins officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

A viewing will be held 2-8 p.m. Friday at Fulton Funeral Home Chapel. The family will be at the residence.

Fulton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Sterley Elton Doss

MARTINSVILLE, Va. - Sterley Elton Doss, 73, of 355 Southland Drive, died Oct. 30, 2002, at Blue Ridge Rehabilitation Center.

Born March 2, 1929, in Henry, he was the son of Claude S. Doss and Vergie Crews Doss.

He retired from Bassett-Walker after 11 years of service and attended Mt. Calvary Pentecostal Holiness Church.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Maella Pickett Doss of the Blue Ridge Rehabilitation Center, two sons, Ricky Lawson Doss of Martinsville and Richard Lee Doss of Roanoke; six sisters, Eula Mae Edwards, Frances Farlow, Lois Hutcherson, Katie Fowler, all of Cascade, Judy Fouts of Danville and Lottie Likens of Martinsville; two brothers, Ernest Doss and Frank Doss, both of Martinsville; one grandchild; and one step grandchild.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Rhonda Faye Doss; and two brothers, Harry Doss and Buford Doss.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Norris Funeral Services Chapel with the Rev. Michael Pressley officiating. Interment will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Friday at Norris Funeral Services and at other times at the residence of his brother, Frank Doss, 315 Varley Lane, Martinsville.

Wayne Clark Eanes

DANVILLE, Va. - Wayne Clark Eanes, 53, of 1497 Myrtle Ave., died Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center Emergency Dept.

Born Aug. 2, 1949, in Danville, he was the son of Clark Samson Eanes and Margaret Nichols Eanes Hill.

He was employed as a mechanic for Motley's Car Connection.

He was married to Sandra B. Eanes, who predeceased him.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by two sons, David Dwayne Eanes and Jud Buchanan III, both of Danville; a daughter, Robin Michelle Eanes of Ringgold; a sister, Nancy L. Inge of Gretna; and three grandchildren.

The graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Barker Funeral Home.

Sarah Hopkins Gardner

DANVILLE, Va. - Sarah Hopkins Gardner, 91, formerly of 405 Ross St., died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002, at Piney Forest Health Care Center.

Born Oct. 25, 1911, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of William and Susan Hairston Hopkins.

She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and a self-employed seamstress.

She was married to Nathaniel Gardner.

She is survived by two brothers, Robert of Perris, Calif. and Daniel Hopkins of Danville; and two sisters, Ethel Adams of Danville and Eva H. Thomas of Charlottesville.

The funeral will be held noon Saturday at Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. S.T. Churn officiating. Interment will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends 6-7 p.m. Friday at L.H. Brooks Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of John Redd, 1080 Honey Road.

Pauline Powell Hancock

HALIFAX, Va. - Pauline Powell Hancock, 90, of 1098 West Oak Hill Drive, died Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002, at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Born April 17, 1912, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of George C. Powell and Eva Bliss Powell.

She was a homemaker and member of Centerville Baptist Church.

She is survived by two sons, Ernest "June" Hancock of South Boston and Elmer W. Hancock of Halifax; seven sisters, Vena P. Watts of Richmond, Dorothy P. Lacks of Halifax, Lanier P. Canada of South Boston, Elsie P. Owen of Halifax, Margaret P. Canada of South Boston, Lillian P. Smith and Mary Lee P. Smith, both of Scottsburg; a brother, Calvin "Runt" Powell of South Boston; two grandsons; and three great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Ernest P. Hancock; four brothers, Luther, Wilson, Joe and Dick Powell; and a sister, Hallie P. Hackney.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Richard Saunders and Rudolph Jacobs officiating. Interment will be in Halifax Memorial Gardens.

The family suggests that memorials be made to Centerville Baptist Church.

Doris K. Hawthorne

HAYES, Va. - Doris Ola King Mundy Hawthorne, 84, died Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002, at Riverside Walter Reed Hospital in Gloucester, Va. Born Sept. 9, 1918, in Danville, Va., she was the daughter of John Ferd King and Lucy Belva Warren King Sharp, both deceased.

Mrs. Hawthorne was a member of Lee Street Baptist Church in Danville. She later attended Union Baptist Church in Achillies until her health failed.

She is survived by two sons, Jon K. Hawthorne of Gloucester Point, Va. and Jessie "Buddy" Mundy of Jacksonsville, N.C.; two brothers, Johnnie M. King of Yorktown, Va. and George Berkley King of Hampton, Va.; one sister, June K. Adams of Danville, Va.; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; six nephews and three nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband, William K. Hawthorne; one daughter, Toby Jean Mundy; a brother, Oscar Alva King; and a sister, Hazel K. Altice.

The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 3, 2002, in the W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home, Newport News, Va.

A funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 4, in the W.J. Smith & Son Funeral Home with the Rev. Clarence W. Hilling officiating. Burial will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park, Newport News, Va.

Virginia Farthing Howard

DANVILLE, Va. - Virginia Farthing Howard, 81, of West Main Street, died Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center after one day in the hospital.

Born March 17, 1921, in Caswell County, N.C., she was the daughter of William Edwin Farthing Sr. and Allie Davis Farthing.

She was a member of Moffett Memorial Baptist Church. She lived her entire life in Danville, Virginia. She was a homemaker and had worked for Dan River Mills, Inc. in the billing department.

She was married to Thomas Allen Howard Sr., who predeceased her.

She is survived by two sons, Thomas Allen Howard Jr. of Charlottesville and John William Howard of Southern Shores, N.C.; a daughter-in-law, Laurie A. Howard of Southern Shores, N.C.; two brothers, Wilbor W. Farthing of Providence, N.C. and W.E. "Bill" Farthing of High Point, N.C.; four sisters, Sadie F. Saunders of Danville, Louise F. Tucker of Richmond, Ethel F. Wilkins of Blanch, N.C. and Helen F. Ledford of Kernersville, N.C.; a granddaughter, Cameron Howard; and a grandson, Noah Howard, both of Southern Shores, N.C.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Eldridge Farthing and Roy Farthing; and one sister, Jewell F. Adkins.

The funeral will be held Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002 at 2 p.m. at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Jeffrey Wright officiating. Interment will be in Mountain View Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and at other times at the residence.

Julia E. Leftwich

DANVILLE, Va. - Julia E. Leftwich, 87, of 1337 Stoney Mill School Road, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002 near her residence.

Born Aug. 28, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Walter and Laura Lee Gregory.

For most of her working life, she helped her husband with the family farm.

She was married to Johnny Leftwich, who predeceased her.

She is survived by a sister, Laura Jennings of the residence.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by four brothers and sisters.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at New Design Baptist Church, Axton, with the Rev. Dwight Mack officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Friday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home and at other times at the home of her great-niece, Debbie Wilson, 1349 Stoney Mill School Road.

Charles James 'C.J.' Lewis

KEELING, Va. - Charles James "C.J." Lewis, 26, of 903 Loop Road, died Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002, at his residence.

Born April 16, 1976, in Fort Campbell, Ky., he was the son of Julian C. Lewis Jr. and Joyce Evans Lewis.

Mr. Lewis lived most of his life in the Danville area and was employed as a security guard at Unique Packaging Company. He was also a very talented musician.

He served two years active duty with the U.S. Army and 18 months with the National Guard of Danville and was on active duty stationed at Aberdeen, Maryland.

He was dedicated to the Lord and a member of Faith Church Ministries and the Praise and Worship Team.

He is survived by his stepmother, Teresa Michelle Lewis; a daughter, Cathryn Marie Briarton of Abilene, Kan.; a sister, Kathy Lewis Clifton of Brosville; a stepsister, Christie Lynn Bean of Pelham, N.C.; a maternal grandmother, Ollie Evans of Yanceyville, N.C.; a step grandfather, Melvin C. Wilson Sr. of Danville; a step brother, Billy Wayne Bean Jr. of Pelham, N.C.; and one nephew.

He was predeceased by a brother, Jason Clifton Lewis.

The double graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Schoolfield Cemetery with the Rev. Louis Emerson officiating. Military honors will be given by the Dan River American Legion Post #1097 Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times the family will be at the residence of Melvin C. Wilson, 1500 Aspen St. and at the residence of Kathy L. Clifton, 4391 Horseshoe Road, Brosville.

Julian Clifton Lewis Jr.

KEELING, Va. - Julian Clifton Lewis Jr., 51, of 903 Loop Road, died Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002, at his residence.

Born Jan. 1, 1951, in Danville, he was the son of Julian Clifton Lewis Sr. and Jeanette Ridgeway Wood.

Mr. Lewis lived most of his life in the Danville area and was an electrician with Dan River Mills. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army where he served in Vietnam.

He was dedicated to the Lord and a member of Faith Church Ministries and the Praise and Worship Team.

He was married to Teresa Michelle Lewis, who survives.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Kathy Lewis Clifton of Brosville, a sister, Helen Cope of Hampton; a father-in-law, Melvin C. Wilson Sr. of Danville; a stepdaughter, Christie Lynn Bean of Pelham, N.C.; a stepson, Billy Wayne Bean Jr. of Pelham, N.C.; and two grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a son, Jason Clifton Lewis.

Yvonne Nichols Peace

HALIFAX, Va. - Yvonne Nichols Peace, 80, of 86 Maple Ave., died Oct. 29, 2002, at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Born March 7, 1922, in Shanghai, China, she was the daughter of Ruthvan Bebe Nichols and Rachel James Woods Nichols.

She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church. During World War II, she served time in a Japanese concentration camp.

She was married to Crawford Grandy Peace.

She is survived by three daughters, Shelley Peace of Halifax, Courtney P. Hagins of Hilton Head Island, S.C. and Nonnie P. Dillehay of Singapore; three sons, Crawford Grandy Peace of Macon, Ga., Van (Buddy) Nichols Peace of Malaysia and Christopher Merrill Peace of Ponte Vedra, Fla.; and nine grandchildren.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Episcopal Church with the Rev. David Booher officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Friday at the residence.

The family suggests that memorials be made to St. John's Episcopal Church Building Fund, the Halifax Volunteer Fire Department or a favorite charity.

Janet Primiano Pfaeffli

HERISAU, Switzerland - Janet Primiano Pfaeffli, 44, died October 25, 2002, after a brief illness, in the Memorial Hospital in Herisau.

Born in Danville, Va. on April 17, 1958, she was the daughter of John A. Primiano, who survives and Lillie Hale Primiano, who predeceased her.

She was a graduate of George Washington High School and attended Danville Community College.

She is survived by her husband, Rene Pfaeffli; two sons, Eric and David of Niederurnen; her father, John A. Primiano; stepmother Shirley Day Primiano of Danville; a sister, Sallie Primiano Boone of Blacksburg, Va.; and a brother, Michael Primiano of Winston-Salem, N.C.

A memorial service will be held at Schoolfield Baptist Church at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 2. Interment will be in Niederurnen, Switzerland.

Memorials may be made to the Danville Community College Educational Foundation.
