Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Pearl Barbour

CALLANDS, Va. - Pearl Collins Barbour, 90, formerly of 4146 Triangle School Road, died Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home after several years of declining health.
Born Sept. 19, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Zephaniah Collins and Marianne Oakes Collins.
She was married to Lewis C. Barbour Jr. who predeceased her Dec. 7, 1989.
Survivors include one daughter, Ardane B. Mills of Dry Fork and two grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by two brothers, William Collins and James Collins and two sisters, Christie Annie Collins and Ludie Collins.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Sherman “Butch” Dillinger and the Rev. Andrew “Jack” Oakes officiating. Interment icon will follow at Barbour Family cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday and other times at the residence of Tom Harp, 3513 Sandy Creek Road.
Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Catherine Barr

CHATHAM, Va. - Catherine Barr, 50, of 1152 North Main St., died Friday, May 4, 2001, at the residence.
Born Aug. 29, 1950, in Decatur, Ga., she was the daughter of Tom Garden and Catherine Taylor.
Survivors include one son, Hark Irvin; two brothers, Samson Glenn Jr. of Richmond and Robert J. Taylor of Newark, N.J. and three sisters, Terry Lee Garden of West Palm Beach, Fla.; Mary Howard of Bayous, Ga. and Annie Glenn of Newark, N.J.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at Howerton Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Isaac Jackson officiating. Interment icon will be at Hillcrest Burial Park.
Viewing will be held from 3-7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Howerton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Esther Burroughs

DANVILLE, Va. - Esther Marie Swanson Burroughs, 71, of 178 Crystal Lane, died Wednesday, May 2, 2001, at Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, after several months of declining health and four weeks in the hospital.
Born May 5, 1929, in Guilford County, N.C., she was the daughter of Dutch Swanson and Maude Swanson.
She was married to Willie James Burroughs, who predeceased her Oct. 25, 1992. She lived in Danville for the past 45 years and was a member of Glen Hill Baptist Church.
Survivors include children, Bill Burroughs of Danville, Ann B. Johnson of Richmond, Tony Burroughs of Dry Fork, Buck Burroughs and Obbie Burroughs, both of Danville; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by one son, Charles Burroughs.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Glen Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Wayne Reece officiating. Interment icon will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and other times at the residence.

Jerry Carter

DANVILLE, Va. - Jerry David Carter, 52, of 133 Orchard Drive, died suddenly Thursday May 3, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 10, 1948, in Danville, he was the son of David Carter, Sr., deceased, and Louise Turner Carter, living.
He was married Feb. 24, 1972, to Susan Swicegood Carter, who survives. Mr. Carter lived his entire life in Danville, VA. where he was employed with Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. as a machine operator. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his Wife, Susan Swicegood Carter of the residence; 2 Daughters, Julie Anne Carter of the residence and Ginger Shay Carter of the residence; 1 Brother, J.D. Carter, Jr. of Danville, VA.; 2 Sisters, Linda Carter Dehart of Danville, VA. and Elaine Carter Shevos of Murrells Inlet, SC.; Mother, Louise Turner Carter of Danville, VA. and Mother In Law, Inzy Swicegood of Danville, VA.
The funeral will be held Sunday 5-06-2001 at 2:00 PM at West End Christian Church with The Reverend June Haislip-Hughes officiating. Interment icon will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
He was more than a devoted husband and father, he was our best friend, he was our world.

Mary Cobbs

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -Mary E. Cobbs, 52, formerly of Danville, Va., died April 30, 2001.
Born Oct. 12, 1948, in Danville, Va., she was the daughter of Felix Cobbs and Ruby Cobbs.
Survivors include daughter, Adele M. Cobbs of Laurel, Md.; son, Derrick W. Cobbs of Hawaii; two grandsons; brothers and sisters, James Cobbs, Ronnie Cobbs, Preston Cobbs, Edith McLaughlin and Yvonne Johnson, all of Danville, Patsy Cobbs of Hartford, Conn., Natily Cobbs of Arlington, Va., John Cobbs of Washington, D.C. and Sandra Kenyon of San Antonia, Texas.
The service will be held 12 noon Saturday at Fleck Funeral Home, 7601 Sandy Spring Road, Laurel, Md.

Brenda Compton

RICHMOND, Va. - Brenda S. Compton, 46, a long time Richmond resident and beloved by family and friends, died Tuesday, May 8, 2001 of cancer. Brenda is survived by her daughter, Christina Clifton, her brother, Dwight Compton and his wife Cathy, her nieces, Cathy Jo and Lindsay, her grandniece, Emma, her sister, Suzette House, her parents, Herbert and Josephine House of Danville and many loving friends. She was preceded in death by her father, Thomas Edward Compton, her brother, Craig Compton and her sister, Tracy Compton. Brenda was born in Warrenton, N.C., on February 27, 1955. She moved to Richmond to pursue a career in accounting, she graduated from J. Sergeant Reynolds Community College with a degree in accounting. She held increasingly responsible positions in the publishing industry and wherever she worked, she had a profound impact on the business itself and more importantly on the people around her. She had an indomitable spirit and zany sense of humor, her command of detail and the big picture were a rare combination. At the time of her death, she was controller of Sabot Publishing, Inc. Her life has been an example to all who knew her and especially so in her recent battle with cancer. Her positive outlook and self-deprecating humor demonstrated that even in a battle lost, it could be done with pride, dignity and grace. Many aspects of her life were blessed but her daughter, Christina, and grandniece, Emma, were her sources of great happiness and fun. Brenda, we all love you and you live on in our hearts and in our minds forever. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 PM today at 7805 Mayland Dr., a memorial service will be held at 3 PM Thursday at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave.. Interment icon will be held at a later date in Danville, Va. The family asks that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to the American Cancer Society, 4240 Park Place Court, Glen Allen, VA. 23060.

Dana Davis

DANVILLE, Va. - Dana Jean Davis of 2129 Stony Mill Sch. Rd. Danville, VA., went to be in the Lord’s presence early Saturday morning May 5, 2001, at Duke Univ. Med. Ctr., Durham, N.C., following a courageous battle with lung cancer. Her family was beside her.
Born in Richlands, Virginia Sept. 13, 1952, Dana moved to Danville, Va. as a young child. She was a graduate of Tunstall High, class of 1971 where she was Head Majorette and won awards from Tunstall’s music dept. She also attended DCC. She met her husband-to-be, William James Davis, who had returned from an overseas tour with the U.S. Marine Corps at that time and they were married June 28, 1973.
Multi-talented, Dana enjoyed being a homemaker and she was blessed with three children: William Scott Davis who will graduate this spring from DCC, and will continue at another college in the fall. Bradley James Davis is a junior at Tunstall High School, and LoriLee Danielle Davis who attends Stony Mill Elem. School all live at the residence.
Dana accepted the Lord Jesus Christ in 1968 and rededicated her life in 2001. Left in the local area to mourn her death but to celebrate her passage into the presence of the Lord, in addition to her husband and children are two brothers, Doug Monk, Jr. and Jacob and Joshua, and Robert Clifton Monk, Sr., and his wife Danna and Rob C. Jr., and Hillary all of White Oak Mtn., and a sister Laura M. Smith and son Will, and her husband Jerry of Westover, Dr.
She also leaves her mother, Lorine DeLong Monk of Danville and her grandmother Juanita M. Gilley of Parrish, Ala., and Elizabeth Davis of Danville.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 2:00 P.M. at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Dave Rochford.
Dana’s long-time friend Debra Simmons will offer the music.
Interment will follow at Danville Mem. Gardens.
The family will receive friends at Swicegood Funeral Home on Mon. eve. from 7:00-8:30 P.M., and at other times at 2129 Stony Mill School Rd., Danville, Va.

John Davis

ALEXANDRIA, Va. - John Henry Davis, 55, of Alexandria, formerly of Long Island, died Saturday night, April 28, 2001, in the Hospice Center of Arlington.
Born March 11, 1946, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Laura Hubbard Davis, who survives, and Robert Davis. He was last employed as a construction worker and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors, in addition to his mother of Java, include three daughters, JoAnn Talbert of Alexandria, Ann M. Hall of Delaware and Patricia Ann Barcliff of Altavista; three sons, Randy Ray Hall of Washington, D.C., Tyrone Miller of Gretna and Henry Lee Talbert of Alexandria; four brothers, Joe L. Davis of Hurt, Robert Davis Jr. of Java, Charlie Davis of Lawrenceville and Jimmy Davis of Wilmington, Del.; 10 sisters, Emma Lou Miller and Jeanette Guerrero, both of Java, Irene Davis and Arlene Barksdale, both of Nathalie, Jerlen Davis and Ella Carter, both Gretna, Mary Davis and Lucille Davis, both Alexandria, Betty Stone of Hurt and Emma Chatten of Wilmington, Del.; and 21 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his father, he was predeceased by six sisters, Myrtle Gilbert, Dollie Lewis, Allvella Hubbard, Minnie Davis, Dorothy Witcher and Janie Davis.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday from the chapel of Miller Funeral Home in Gretna, with Dr. P.A. Medley officiating. Interment icon will be in the Staunton Baptist Church cemetery in Long Island.
The family is at the residence of a sister and brother-in-law, Emma Lou and Jackie Miller, 496 Riceville Road, Java.
Miller Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Thomas Downs

DANVILLE, Va. - Thomas Downs, 96, of 320 Whiterock Road, died Saturday, April 28, 2001, at Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born April 9, 1905, in Greenville, S.C., he was a son of John Downs and Victoria Downs.
He was married to Helen Downs, who predeceased him.
Survivors include one sister, Georgia Downs Carson of Greenville, S.C.; and one brother, Jerry Downs of Washington, D.C.
The funeral will be held 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Kevin McNeil officiating. Interment icon will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Henry Eanes

DANVILLE, Va. - Henry Pierce Eanes, 74, of 13 Augusta Ave., died Sunday, April 29, 2001, at the residence.
Born July 28, 1926, in McDowell, W.Va., he was a son of Charles Eanes and Mary McGuire Eanes.
He was married Feb. 6, 1968, to Josie Proffitt Eanes, who survives. For the past 29 years he had resided in the Danville area, where prior to his retirement he was a tech sergeant for the United States Air Force and retired after 20.5 years of military service. He was also employed with the United States Postal Service and had retired after 14 years of service. He was a member of The Disabled American Veterans and the Schoolfield Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include one son, Dwayne L. Eanes of Greensboro, N.C.; and one brother, "Ebbie" Eanes of Welch, W.Va.
He was predeceased by five brothers, Fitzhugh Eanes, Robert Eanes, Clarence Eanes, Leslie Eanes and Walter Eanes; and one sister, Mabel E. Lambert.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel, with the Rev. George Harper and the Rev. Wilmer Sowell officiating. Entombment will be held at Danville Memorial Gardens. Seymore Air Force Base Honor Guard will be conducting military rites.
The family will received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and other times will be at the residence.

Isa Farmer

GRETNA, Va. - Isa Dalton Farmer, 90, of Gretna died Tuesday, May 1, 2001, at Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born June 11, 1910, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Spencer Wallace Dalton and Rose Eanes Dalton.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of God of Prophecy, Java.
Survivors include two sons, Bobby Lee Farmer of Hurt and Wallace Farmer of Bassett; two daughters, Carol Warfe of Gretna and Jean Conner of Chatham; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and two step-great-great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a sister, Eva Dalton; and two brothers, Lloyd Dalton and Floyd Dalton.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at the Church of God of Prophecy, with the Rev. Edward Pope officiating. Interment icon will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times at the home of Carol and Richard Warfe, 1249 Pittsville Road, Gretna.
Colbert-Moran Funeral Home, Gretna, is in charge of arrangements.
