Elsie Ridgeway

ALTON, Va. - Elsie Carter Ridgeway, 39, of Harmony Road, died Wednesday, May 9, 2001.
Born June 13, 1961, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Henry Melvin Carter and Louise Walker Carter, who survive.
She was married to Roy Kenneth Ridgeway Jr.
Survivors, in addition to her mother of South Boston, include one son, Dereke Wayne Ridgeway of South Boston, two sisters, Virginia Walters of South Boston and Olivia Hudson of Alton and two brothers, Henry Melvin Carter Jr. of Naruna and Holt Carter of Liberty.
The graveside service was held 11 a.m. Friday at Carter Family cemetery.
The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Powell Funeral Home.
Powell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Pearl Slavenski

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. -Pearl Watkins Slavenski, 78, died Wednesday, May 9, 2001, in South Boston after an extended illness.
Born July 12, 1922, in Clyde, N.Y., she was the daughter of Walter Watkins and Hazel Davenport Watkins.
She was first married to Matthew T. Slavenski, who predeceased her in 1975, and later married John F. Scozzari, who predeceased her in 1986. She lived in Otto, N.Y. until 1992 and graduated from Cato-Meridian Central School and attended Cayuga Community College. She worked at General Electric in Syracuse for 22 years and later owned and operated Slavenski Reality Company for more than 20 years in the Finger Lakes region. She was a foster parent, volunteer at the Cayuga Home for Children and was a member of the Sennett Federated Church. She was a Literacy Volunteer and volunteered at Woodview Nursing Home, Circle 2, and First Presbyterian Church, where she was a member. She was a Parkinson’s patient who participated in research and new drug therapies at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.
Survivors include three sons and three daughters, Matthew F. Slavenski and Theodore R. Slavenski, both of Atlanta, Ga., Kim R. Slavenski of Seattle, Wash., Sharon Lindquist of Lockport, N.Y., Shirley Meunier of Norwood, N.Y and Virginia Bogart of South Boston; four grandchildren; adopted children, Dick and Vickey Quimby of Auburn, N.Y.; two brothers, Walter Watkins of Wolcott, N.Y. and Richard Watkins of Fulton, N.Y.; two foster children; one stepdaughter; and a number of step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husbands, by two brothers, Clifford Watkins of Silver Springs, Fla. and Ira Watkins of Weedsport, N.Y. and two sisters, Edna Sanderson of Mexico, N.Y. and Velma Kyle of Weedsport, N.Y.
The memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, May 19, at First Presbyterian Church in South Boston.
The family suggests memorials may be made to National Parkinson’s Foundation or a charity of choice.

Geneva Smith

DANVILLE, Va. - Geneva Edwards Smith, 90, of 221 Huntington Place, died Friday, May 11, 2001, at Riverside Healthcare Center after three weeks of illness.
Born Nov. 22, 1910, in Schoolfield, she was the daughter of Arlett Franklin Edwards Sr. and Lucy Shelton Edwards.
She was married to Ulysses Levander "Sweetie" Smith, who predeceased her Aug. 2, 1972. She was educated in Schoolfield Public Schools and lived her early life in Danville. She later moved to Roanoke Rapids, Winston-Salem, N.C. and Franklinville, N.C., before moving back to Danville in 1972. She was a member of Schoolfield United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one sister, Billie Edwards Calvert of Danville and one brother, Arlett Franklin Edward Jr. of Ringgold.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by one brother, Joseph Jackson Edwards and four sisters, Rubye Cobb, Bertha Coleman, Inez Paul and Dymple Pursley.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Mountain View cemetery with the Rev. Dana Hunt officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Billie Calvert, 262 Howeland Circle.

Norma Swem

MILTON, Fla. - Norma Virginia Oskey Swem, 76, of Milton, Fla., died May 3, 2001, in a local hospital.
A native of Danville, Va., she was a Red Cross volunteer for more than 30 years, a member of the Navy Wives Club, and named Volunteer of the Year in 1990 by Governor Schaefer of Maryland.
She was predeceased by her husband, George E. Swem, and one grandson.
Survivors include two daughters, Linda Yakaboski and Jeni Edmonds; two brothers, Raymond Oskey of Danville and Russell Oskey of Richmond, Va.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral was held May 6 in Milton, Fla. A memorial service will be held in Danville at a later date.

Sarah Towler

DANVILLE, Va. - Sarah Elizabeth Towler, 73, of 667 Cabell St., died Monday, May 7, 2001, at the Stratford Health Center in Danville.
Born Dec. 26, 1927, in Reidsville, N.C., she was the daughter of Nathaniel and Mary Adams Price.
She was married to James Towler, who predeceased her.
Survivors include three daughters, Annie Motley, Sharon Vaden and Sheila Tunstall, all of Danville; four sons, James Price of Wilson, N.C., David Towler of State Farm, Jesse Price and Douglas Towler, both of Danville; one sister, Gladys Coles of Danville and one brother, Sylvester Price of Philadelphia, Pa.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with Bishop Major Hairston officiating. Interment icon will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Sheila Tunstall, 137 Kirkwood Drive, Danville.
Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Helen Waddell

HALIFAX, Va. - Helen Marie Waddell, 93, of 1055 Highland Hills Drive, died Thursday, May 10, 2001, at the Woodview.
Born April 27, 1908, in Schenectady, N.Y., she was the daughter of Rudolf Kessler and Helene Heiner Kessler.
She was married to James Z. Waddell Sr. She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Meherrin.
Survivors include two daughters, Geraldine Smith of Halifax and Shirley Snider of French Creek, W.Va.; one foster child, Dorothy Green of Greensboro, N.C.; 12 grandchildren; three step grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents, by one son, James Z. Waddell Jr.; one grandchild and three brothers, Rudolf, Hans and Ernie Kessler.
The funeral will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Meherrin with the Rev. Robert Wind officiating. Interment icon will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Powell Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
The family suggests in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 69, Meherrin, VA 23954.

Emma Wilson

VIRGILINA, Va. - Emma Sue Long Wilson, 95, of 4043 Wilson Road, died Friday, May 11, 2001, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Sept. 15, 1905, in Person County, N.C., she was the daughter of John Allen Long and Nannie Russell Long.
She was married to Asa Jerry Wilson, who predeceased her. She was a member of Union United Church of Christ and was a homemaker.
Survivors include six daughters, Zuline Lowery, Thelma Wilson, Cecil Tuck, Shirley Carmichael and Nancy Young, all of Virgilina and Virginia Cumbey of South Boston; one son, C.J. Wilson of Virgilina; two sisters, Louise Lowery of Roxboro, N.C. and Hazel Long of Raleigh, N.C.; one half-sister, Nannie Hatchett of Roxboro, N.C.; three half-brothers, Billy Long, Tennie Lee Long and Jack Long, all of Roxboro, N.C.; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by one grandson.
The funeral will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at Brooks Funeral Home with the Rev. Les Puryear officiating. Interment icon will follow at Virgilina cemetery.
Visitation will be held 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Brooks Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
The family suggests memorials may be made to Florence Ave. Baptist Church Building Fund.

Katherine Woody

DANVILLE, Va. - Katherine "Kitty" Noel Woody, 91, of 1111 Main Street, Stratford House, died Saturday, May 12, 2001, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born Dec. 30, 1909, in Stuart, she was the daughter of Walker Clayren Noel and Ella Wimbish Noel.
She was married to Frank Ross Woody, who predeceased her Dec. 1, 1954. She had been a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church for over 60 years.
The graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Jonathan Bennett officiating.
Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Emma Garrison Wrenn

DANVILLE, Va. - Emma Garrison Wrenn, 86, of 2344 Riverside Drive died Sunday, May 13, 2001, in Riverside Health Care Center.
Born Sept. 1, 1914, in Wilkesboro, N.C., she was a daughter of Charles P. Garrison and Mary Gosney Garrison, who both predeceased her.
Mrs. Wrenn had lived her entire life in Danville and was retired from Dan River Mills after 36 years of service. She was a member of the Stokesland Baptist Church.
Survivors include her daughter, Mary Lee Rawlins and her husband, Charles Rawlins, of Shawsville, Va.; a sister, Ethel G. Simon of Swoope, Va.; a grandson, David Rawlins of Greensboro, N.C.; a granddaughter, Cynthia R. Vechinski and her husband, Douglas Vechinski, of Florida; and two great-grandchildren, Darien and Jarod Vechinski. She is also survived by a niece and nephew.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Chatham Burial Park, with the Reverend Larry Pittman and the Reverend J.P. Rapier officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel.

Ellen Yeaman

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Ellen Ray Greenwood Yeaman, 78, of 707 Magnolia Drive died Monday, May 14, 2001, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Sept. 28, 1922, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Benjamin Pace Greenwood and Dorothy Tune Greenwood. She was married to Walter Beverly Yeaman, who survives, and she was a member of the Second Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband of South Boston, she is survived by one daughter, Ellen Yeaman Cook of England, one son, Robert P. Yeaman of Danville; two brothers, Robert Dudley Greenwood of Mechanicsville and Joseph Raymond Greenwood of South Boston; two sisters, Hilda McLaughlin of Ringgold and Harriett Compton of Vernon Hill; and two grandsons.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Second Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jim Smith officiating. Interment icon will follow at Halifax Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at the church, and at other times at the residence.

Chesley Adams Jr.

ROANOKE, Va. - Adams, Chesley S. Jr., 70, of Roanoke, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 10, 2001. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War. He was a Lay Minister, a former boy scout leader and worked in electrical wholesale as a purchasing agent. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Chesley S. Adams, Sr. and Reba W. Adams. Also two sons, James Edward Adams and Chesley S. Adams, III. Surviving are his wife, Ruth T. Adams, sons, Robert Charles Adams of Roanoke, Frank Bolton Adams of Richmond, daughters, Nancy A. Wilson of Roanoke, Kitty Thomas of Roanoke, step children, Deborah W. Carlisle of Botetourt County, Donnie Lee Wray, Jr. of Blue Ridge, Robert Edward Wray of Vinton, Steven Wayne Wray of Botetourt County, 12 grandchildren and nine step grandchildren, also he loved his pet dog "Shadow." Services were held at Mt. Olive Primitive Baptist Church 3 p.m. Monday, May 14, 2001, with Elder Thomas B. Mann and the Rev. Arlie Cook officiating. Interment icon followed in Sherwood Memorial Park. The family suggests memorials be made to the Mt. Olive Primitive Baptist Church, 3106 Red Rock Rd. Roanoke, 24018.
