Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Robert Saunders Jr.

DANVILLE, Va. - Robert Edward Saunders Jr., 77, of 434 Kemper Road, died Monday, June 11, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center after one day at the hospital.
Born Oct. 14, 1923, in Richmond, he was the son of Robert Edward Saunders Sr. and Ethel Rose Saunders Von Eime.
He was married July 28, 1944, to Corrine Fletcher Saunders, who survives. He was a veteran of the United States Navy and spent most of his life in Danville where he was a cabinet maker, working for Danville Lumber Company for 40 years. He was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church and the American Legion Memorial Post No. 325.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include two daughters, Linda Dean Saunders of Marietta, Ga., and Deborah Leigh Taylor of Blairs; two sons, Ronald E. Saunders of Keeling and Richard F. Saunders of Ringgold; one half sister, Betty S. Wood of Dimondale, Mich; three half brothers, Garnett Lee Von Eime of Danville, and Robert G. Saunders and Jack Saunders, both of Richmond; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by one brother, Arthur Von Eime Jr. and step-father, Arthur Von Eime Sr.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Lee Von Eime and the Rev. Jonathan L. Bennett officiating. Interment icon will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home and other times at the residence of his son, 1473 Ringgold Road.

Mary Ann Shelton

DANVILLE, Va. - Friends and neighbors are saddened by the sudden death of Mary Ann Shelton who has resided on Mount Cross Road for many years. God’s Word says to each of us “I will never leave you or forsake you.” Our prayer is for a renewing of strength to bring us through this valley. Our loved one is with God now and is at peace and rest. May those who remain be comforted.
Mary Ann is survived by her husband Raymond of the home. In December of 2000, they celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.
Mary Ann was raised in Pennsylvania but had made Virginia her home for many years. She was employed at Dan River, Inc. for over forty years. She enjoyed her walking buddies and during previous years, friends could find her walking at Piedmont Mall. She was an active member of the Dan River Retirees Club and enjoyed monthly meetings with fellow workers. She was always asked to bring the favorite dessert -"cherry cobbler".
Her neighbors could always depend on her for support in times of need and she was always available for encouragement and many times, would prepare dishes of food and deliver them to houses throughout the neighborhood. She was most famous for her “Homemade Bread.” Many times, friends would drop by for a visit and would find her taking as many as 10 loaves of bread out of the oven and getting them ready for delivery.
Mary Ann leaves a number of nieces and one nephew, Jimmy Evanicsko of Nanty Glo, PA. Her extended family includes a host of friends and especially Ann Robertson, cousin of Raymond, Robbin & Dennis Tucker of Gretna, Va and their children, Lee, Emily, Ben, Sarah and especially Elizabeth who was a regular visitor to the Shelton’s home. Others mentioned are Mary Frances and her daughter & son-in-law, Bettie & Carl Tuck.
In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be sent to Sheva Church of Christ Building Fund, the American Cancer Society or a charity of your choice.
Graveside rites will be held Wednesday at 11:00 AM. at Highland Burial Park.

Elsie Snead

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. -Elsie Wilborne Snead, 81, of 2070 Huell Matthews Highway, died Monday, June 11, 2001, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Feb. 17, 1920, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Jefferson Davis Wilborne and Nora Scott Wilborne.
She was married to Robert Snead Sr., who survives. She was a member of South Boston Church of God, where she was a Sunday School teacher for teens and young adults, member of Ladies Auxillary and youth camp counselor.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of South Boston, include two daughters, Carolyn S. Bransby of Atlanta, Ga., and Joanne S. Woodruff of Burlington, N.C.; two sons, William R. "Bill" Snead Jr. of South Boston and James Franklin "Jimmie" Snead of Atlanta, Ga.; four sisters, Sylvia W. Thomas of South Boston, Ruby W. Ford of Richmond, Mary W. Rowe of Newbern, N.C., and Jackie W. Cuneo of Richmond; five brothers, Henry Wilborne and Raleigh Wilborne, both of South Boston, Harvey Wilborne of Thomasville, N.C., Donald Wilborne of High Point, N.C., and Bobby Wilborne of Kernersville, N.C.; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wendnesday at South Boston Church of God with the Rev. Dr. Bill Leonard and Jimmie Snead officiating. Interment icon will follow at Oak Ridge cemetery.
The family received friends 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Powell Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
The family suggests memorials may be made to Patrick Henry Boys and Girls Home, P.O. Box 1398, Brookneal, VA 24534 or Gideons.

Wesley Sparks

DANVILLE, Va. - Wesley Eugene Sparks, 53, of 315 Rhodenizer St. died Thursday, June 7, 2001, at Stratford Health Care Center.
Born Nov. 1, 1947, he was the son of Mamie Sparks Burnett. He worked at the North Main Recreation Center untill his retirement due to health. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his maternal grandfather, Whiller D. Sparks of Danville; three sisters, Betty Buntin of Danville and Linda Fulton and Brenda Burnett, both of Eden, N.C.; two brothers, James Gauldin and Danny Burnett, both of Danville.
The graveside service will be held 4 p.m. Sunday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Kenneth Hall Sr. officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Townes Funeral Home and at other times at 442 Norwood Drive.
Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ulus Travis

DANVILLE, Va. - Ulus E. Travis, 81, of 120 Pearl St., died Wednesday, June 6, 2001, at his residence.
Born June 12, 1919, in Danville, he was the son of Orlando and Rosette Travis Lee.
He was married to Lucille Travis, who predeceased him.
Survivors include two daughters, Eva Williams and Rosetta Travis, both of Danville, and his grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Monday at the Trinity Baptist Church with the Rev. William Dixon officiating. Interment icon will follow at Highland Burial Park cemetery.

Sudie Werner

ROANOKE, Va. - Sudie May Walton Werner, 87, of Salem died Thursday, June 7, 2001, after a long illness.
Born Jan. 23, 1914, in Danville, she was the daughter of Lena Wordson and James B. Walton. She was married to William Werner, who predeceased her May 18, 2001. She was a member of College Lutheran Church, Salem. She was a Registered Nurse at Catawba Sanitorium, Medical College of Virginia, Richmond, and taught OBGYN at Roanoke Memorial.
Survivors include special friends Garland and Betty Slayton of Roanoke.
The funeral service will be held 12 noon Monday at College Lutheran Church, Salem with the Rev. D.J. Westermann officiating. Interment icon will be held 3 p.m. Monday at Highland Burial Park, Danville.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Sunday at John M. Oakey and Son Funeral Home, Salem.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to College Lutheran Church, Salem and the Salem Rescue Squad.

Tanya Womack

JAVA, Va. - Tanya Raye Womack, 20, of 14612 Halifax Road died Thursday, June 7, 2001, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born March 15, 1981, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of James Howard Womack and Virginia Cole Walton, who survive. She attended First Baptist Church, Republican Grove.
Survivors, in addition to her parents, include one son, Tristin Tyler Yesalavich of Republican Grove; stepfather, Johnny Walton of Java; step mother, Sheila Womack of Virgilina; two sisters, Karla Womack of Virginia Beach and Sheila Meadows of Java; one stepsister, Crystal Crawford of Java; two stepbrothers, William Walton of Dry Fork and Eric Walton of Danville; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Womack of Scottsburg and her maternal grandmother, Patricia Cole of South Boston.
The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Second Baptist Church with the Rev. Shelton Miles and the Rev. Jim Smith officiating. Interment icon will follow at Oak Ridge cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Saturday at Powell Funeral Home and other times at the residence and at the father’s residence 1058 Covered Bridge Road, Virgilina.
The family suggests memorials to the Halifax County Cancer Association, P.O. Box 875, South Boston, Va. 24592.

Grace Anderson

DANVILLE, Va. - Grace Gilliam Anderson, 75, of 19111 L.P. Bailey Memorial Highway, died Monday, June 18, 2001 at the Medical Care Center. She was the daughter of the late Gordon B. Anderson and the late Jessie Adams Anderson.
Ms. Anderson was born in Lynchburg, January 23, 1926. She was an active member of Childrey Baptist Church, the Golden Years Club, a former Sunday School Teacher and pianist. She was also a former associate member of First Baptist Church in Danville. She was a graduate of Longwood College and received her Masters degree in Education at the University of Virginia, a retired school teacher of 40 years in Danville.
She is survived by her aunts, Geraldine S. Adams of Brookneal, and Virginia W. Adams of Richmond; her cousins, Dr. R.F. Burke Steele Jr. and his wife Betty of Petersburg, Louise S. Steele of Raleigh, NC, Richard T. Adams and his wife June of Brookneal, James E. Adams and his wife Peri of Brookneal, Robert C. Adams and his wife Denise of Rockville.
She was a very caring and loving person to all and will be dearly loved and missed by many.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 pm Thursday, June 21, 2001 at Childrey Baptist Church by the Rev. Rodney Barwick. Interment icon will follow in church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 pm Wednesday, at Henderson Funeral Home, Brookneal and will be at the residence other times.

Mary Bell

DANVILLE, Va. - Mary Lloyd Bell, 86, of 4530 Westover Drive, died Friday, June 15, 2001, at the residence, after several months of declining health.
Born March 26, 1915 in Columbia, Tenn., she was a daughter of Daniel Eugene Lloyd and Mary Waddey Lloyd.
She was married to Hollis Lee Bell, who predeceased her Jan. 2, 2000. She spent most of her life in Danville where she was retired from Dan River Inc. and a member of Schoolfield Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Raymond E. Bell of Annapolis, Md.; one foster son, William O. Morris of Danville; three brothers, William Lloyd of Danville, Eldridge Lloyd of Walnut Grove, N.C. and George Lloyd of Wilmington, N.C.; three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by one brother, John Daniel Lloyd Jr. and two sisters, Lillie Lloyd and Margaret Lloyd.
The graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. David R. Turbyfill officiating.
The family will receive friends at Swicegood Funeral Home 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

John Calloway

SUTHERLIN, Va. - John Hampton Calloway, of 1017 Wooding Road, died Friday, June 15, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 24, 1914, in Halifax County, he was the son of Dewey Calloway and Orpha Lipscomb Calloway, who survives.
He was married to Mable Calloway, who survives. He was a truck driver until his retirement.
Survivors, in addition to his wife and mother, include two daughters, Hilda Annette Logan of South Boston and Brenda Bennett of Danville; one sister, Sallie Samuel of Sutherlin and three brothers, Paul Calloway of Philadelphia, Pa., Thomas Calloway of Sutherlin and Wayne Calloway of South Boston.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at White Oak Grove Baptist Church in Sutherlin with Elder Eddie Davis officiating. Interment icon will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Ruth Marshall Clements

GLEN ALLEN, Va. - Ruth Apple Marshall Clements, 76, of 10202 Heritage Lane, died Saturday, June 16, 2001, at Lexington Court Nursing Home after two years of declining health.
Born Nov. 18, 1924 in Danville, she was the daughter of Clarence S. Apple and Lillian Sinclair Apple.
She was first married to Oliver Davis Marshall, who predeceased her June 30, 1980, and later married Walter T. Clements, who predeceased her Feb. 14, 1997. She lived most of her life in Danville prior to moving to Richmond in 1982. She had worked in sales for Sears Roebuck & Co. and was a member of the Skipwith Baptist Church in Richmond. She was a member of the Friendship Sunday School Class.
Survivors include two daughters, Brenda H. DaJong of Richmond and Sue M. Wilkerson of Ringgold; two sisters, Bernice C. Clark of Ringgold and Rubye A. Nicholas of Modesto, Calif.; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husbands, by a daughter, Olivia “Deane“ Bray.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Tom Miller and the Rev. Carl Burger officiating. Interment icon will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence of a daughter, 1892 Wilkerson Road, Ringgold.
Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
