Isaiah Hogan

DANVILLE, Va. - Isaiah “Ike” Bennett Hogan, 76, of 2589 Inman Road, died Sunday, July 8, 2001, at the residence.
Born Jan. 25, 1925, in Huddleston, he was the son of Ira Cornelious Hogan and Berta Mae Swain Hogan.
He was married Jan. 23, 1945, to Inez McMinnis Hogan, who survives. He was a veteran of the United States Army during World War II. He lived most of his life in Pittsylvania County where he was a member of Saint Johns United Methodist Church. He was a construction worker for the John Daniel Group and retired from Tunstall High School as a custodian.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include three daughters, Carolyn Johnston and Ellen Crider, both of Danville, and June Conner of Callands; two sons, Ralph Hogan of Gladys and Dannie Hogan of Danville; four sisters, Doris Pugh and Thelma Barnard, both of Altavista, Vernell Tolbott of Hurt and Annie Allen of North Carolina; two brothers, James T. Hogan of Huddleston and Edward L. Hogan of Altavista; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by two brothers, Aaron Hogan and Isaac Hogan.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Steve Greer, Pastor James Mayes and the Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating. Interment icon will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens with military honors performed by American Legion Post No. 1097 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and other times at the residence in the Brosville area.
The family suggests memorials may be made to Brosville Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 2351 Danville, VA 24541 or Hospice Support Services Inc., P.O. Box 2713 Danville, VA 24541.

Daniel Johnson

NORTH PALM BEACH, Fla. - Daniel H. Johnson, 68, of 758 Lighthouse Drive, died Tuesday, July 10, 2001, at the residence.
Born Nov. 1, 1932, in Belair, Ohio, he was a son of Ralph Johnson and Grace Evans Johnson.
He was married to Betty Wilson Johnson, who survives.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include three daughters, Robin J. France of Orlando, Fla., Kelly J. Matyjasik of Lake Worth, Fla. and Robin Gill of North Palm Beach; one son, Tim Johnson of North Palm Beach; one sister, Diane Kruger of Vero Beach; two brothers, David Johnson of Orlando and Denny Johnson of Wilmington, N.C.; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The graveside service with Masonic rites will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Highland Burial Park in Danville with the Rev. Michael Huff officiating.
The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Friday at Scott Funeral Home.

Bennie Jones

BLAIRS, Va. - Bennie A. Jones, 69, of 2261 Malmaison Road, died Tuesday, July 10, 2001, at the residence.
Born Feb. 12, 1932, in Blairs, he was a son of Andrew Jones and Parthenia Glass Jones.
He was married to Lola M. Jones, who survives. He was the owner and manager of Benny’s Place and was a member of Shockoe Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include four sons, Bennie A. Jones Jr. of Houston, Brian K. Jones of Bowe, Md., Barry J. Murphy of Danville and Lloyd D. Jones of Suffolk; five brothers, Willie D. Jones, Robert Jones and Godfrey G. Jones, all of Danville, Richard Jones of Blairs and Posey T. Jones of Baltimore; one sister, Mable J. Whitehead of Blairs; and four grandchildren.
The funeral is scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at Shockoe Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Kelvin McNeil officiating. Interment icon will follow at the church cemetery.
Viewing is scheduled for 4-8 p.m. Thursday at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home.
The family will be at the residence.

Peggy King

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Peggy N. King, 57, of 8215 Philpott Road, died Monday, July 10, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center.
Born July 23, 1943, in Halifax County, she was a daughter of Arthur G. Nelson and Lucille Cassada.
She was married to J.B. Cassada Jr., who survives in South Boston.
In addition to her husband and her mother of Ringgold, Va. survivors include two daughters, Christal Woicikowfski of Halifax and Dee Dee King of South Boston; one sister, Phyllis Street of Pelham, N.C.; one brother, Danny Cassada of Ringgold and two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death, in addition to her father, by one brother, Ross Nelson.
The funeral is scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel. Interment icon will follow at Black Walnut Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Powell Funeral Home and other times at 253 Canterbury Drive, Halifax.
Powell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Tommie Joe King Jr.

RINGGOLD, Va. - Tommie Joe King Jr., 73, of 5323 Tomfork Road., died Wednesday, July 11, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 8, 1928 in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Tommie Joe King Sr., and Hilda Brown King.
He was married to Normal Clarice King, who survives. He was employed at Moore’s Building Supply and was a member of Callands Baptist Church. In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by three sons, Ralph King and Thomas King, both of Danville and Roy Neal King of Fairfax County; five daughters, Shirley Jean King of the residence, Jo Juanita Betts of Sutherlin, Patricia Ann Jenkins of Clarksville, Tenn., Charlotte Marie Daniels and Junie Cornet, both of Danville; two brothers, Kermit King and Alvis Johnson King, both of Callands; two sisters, Dorothy Bell of Danville and Mary Florence King Roher of Washington; 18 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Callands Baptist Church, with the Rev. Howard Graves and the Rev. Obadele St. George officiating. Interment icon will follow in the church cemetery. Miller Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Shirley Midkiff

HALIFAX, Va. - Shirley Hodnett Midkiff, 65, of 1011 Cedar Fork Road, died Monday, July 9, 2001, at the residence.
Born March 21, 1936, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Charlie Y. Hodnett and Mamie Hall H. Ingram.
She was married to Earl Scott Midkiff, who survives. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Millstone.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of Halifax, include two daughters, Carolyn Harris of Littleton, N.C., and Judy Midkiff of Midlothian, and two grandsons.
She was predeceased by her brother, Winston Hodnett, and son, Edward E. Midkiff.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church of Millstone with the Rev. Bob Watts and the Rev. Dr. Melvin Bradshaw officiating. Interment icon will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Powell Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Albert Mort Oakes

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Albert Mort Oakes, 75, of 1002 James D. Hagood Highway, died Friday, July 13, 2001, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Nov. 16, 1925 in Halifax County, he was a son of Charlie E. Oakes and Sallie W. Oakes.
He was married to Inez C. Oakes, who survives. He was a truck driver for Estes Express Lines. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, having served in World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of Hunting Creek Baptist Church and the American Legion Post No. 8. He was also a former South Boston police officer.
In addition to his wife of South Boston, he is survived by two daughters, Wanda Lee of Ringgold and Betty Teodorovici of Vancouver, B.C., Canada; one son, Michael J. Oakes of South Boston; two brothers; two sisters; one half-sister; six grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Cordie Payne

DANVILLE, Va. - Cordie Wells Payne, 81, died Saturday July 7, 2001 at Roman Eagle Memorial Home after several years of declining health. She had resided at Roman Eagle Memorial Home the past four years.
Born June 13, 1920 in the Swansonville community of Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Eddie Laurens Wells and Clara Reynolds Wells. She was married June 27, 1936 to Wilbur L. Payne, who predeceased her June 1, 1994. She lived most of her life in the Dry Fork area of Pittsylvania County and worked for Dan River Mills prior to her retirement. She was a member of Oaks Memorial Baptist Church.
Survivors include daughter, Betty Payne Hundley and son in law, Wallace Hundley of Marietta, Georgia, and one granddaughter, Birdeana Rosenbaum and granson in law, Jim Rosenbaum of Danville, and two great grandsons, Dominick “Nick” Parker and Caleb Rosenbaum, all of Danville: one sister, Iris W. Hall of South Boston, and three brothers, Stuart Wells of Callands, Raleigh Wells of Chatham, and Rev. Clyde Wells of Martinsville.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by one son, Bobby L. Payne; two sisters, Adele W. Henderson and Hazel W. Lowe; and one brother, William E. Wells.
The funeral will be held at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jim Gregory officiating. Interment icon will follow at Boaze Family cemetery, Highway 41, Dry Fork, Virginia.
The family received friends at Swicegood Funeral Home Monday evening from 7:00-8:30 P.M., and other times at the residence of Cordie Payne, across from Oakes Implement on Highway 41, Franklin Trnpk, Dry Fork.

Dora Pannell

LONG ISLAND, Va. - Dora Lee Pannell, 86, of 1381 Moons Road, died Monday, July 9, 2001, at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born Aug. 4, 1914, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Howard and Minnie Hall Slayton.
She was married to Jim Allen Pannell, who preceded her in death. She was a homemaker and member of Staunton Baptist Church in Long Island.
Survivors include five daughters, Mollie Gould of Englewood, N.J., Edna Graves of Gretna, Va., Delores Carter of Newark, N.J., Maggie Boone of Long Island and Dora Boone of Bloomfield, N.J.; four sons, James Pannell of Nathalie, Va., Vasco Pannell of Gretna, Louis Pannell of Bedford, Va. and George Pannell of Long Island; four sisters, Estelle Waller of Long Island, Pearl Walthall and Eunice Patrick, both of Philadelphia and Edith Rosser of South Boston; two brothers, Joseph and Frank Slayton, both of Philadelphia, Pa.; 55 grandchildren; 135 great-grandchildren; 27 great-great-grandchildren; and two great-great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death, in addition to her parents and husband, by three sons, Norman, Jessie and Willie C. Pannell; one daughter, Marie Monroe; one sister, Dollie Davis; and four brothers, Jack, Vasco, Albert and George Oakley Slayton.
The funeral is scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday at Staunton Baptist Church with Dr. P.A. Medley officiating. Interment icon will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will be at the residence.

Florence Richardson

DANVILLE, Va. - Florence Annette Richardson, 64, of 364 Ross St., died Friday, July 6, 2001, at the residence.
Born May 12, 1937, in Danville, she was the daughter of Willie Mae Ferguson and George Stanfield, who survives.
Survivors, in addition to her father, include six daughters, Voryann Howerton, Sharon Stanfield, Linda Stanfield, Regina Stanfield, Tina Jones and Belinda White, all of Danville; one sister, Essie Miller of Danville, and five brothers, Hayward Stanfield, Harold Stanfield, Larry Stanfield and James Ferguson, all of Danville, and Wren Stanfield of Greensboro, N.C.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bennett Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Hairston officiating. Interment icon will follow at Highland Burial Park cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

John Clarence Ryan Jr.

DANVILLE, Va. - John Clarence Ryan Jr., 74, of 210 Meadowbook Drive, died Friday, July 13, 2001 at the Danville Regional Medical Center after one month of declining health.
Born March 9, 1927 in Danville, he was the son of John C. Ryan, Sr. and Archie Mae Ryan.
He was married to Ella Frances Hardie Ryan, who survives. He was a graduate of Smithdeal-Massey Business College in Richmond, Va.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and lived in Danville most of his life. He worked for John W. Daniel & Co., Inc. for 35 years where he retired as Treasurer. After his retirement, he worked as a courier for Lab Care with the Danville Regional Medical Center.
He was a member of Keen Street Baptist Church where he served as Chairman of the Board of Deacons. Additionally, he was a past president of the Danville Civitan Club and was a member of the Tuscarora Country Club.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Diane Ryan Gardner of Danville and Kimberly Ryan Clifton of Danville and her husband, Robert L. Clifton, III. He is also survived by two grandsons, Andrew Lee Gardner of Danville and Phillip Ryan Gardner of Danville. He is also survived by his brother Melvin W. Ryan, Sr. and sister-in-law Boots Ryan of Danville.
The funeral will be held on Sunday, July 15, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. at Keen Street Baptist Church with Rev. Thomas Brown officiating. Interment icon will be held at the Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Street and other times at the residence.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers that memorials be made to either the Keen Street Baptist Building Fund or the Danville Life Saving Crew.
