Sybil Howell Robertson

EDEN, N.C. - Sybil Howell Robertson, 73, of 137 Bradford Street, died Monday, January 13, 2003 at her home. The service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003 at Fair Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Dan View Cemetery.

Mrs. Robertson was born in Rockingham County and was retired from Fieldcrest Mills.

She is survived by a daughter, "Gay" Robertson, of the home; two sisters, Roslyn Henry and Patsy Turner, both of Eden; one brother, Harry "H.D." Howell of Reidsville; four grandchildren, Jordan Robertson of the home, Brandi Goard, Holly Coates and Dylan Davis; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Haywood G. Robertson and two daughters, Kelly Jo Robertson and Ginger Gibson.

Visitation will be held 7 until 9 Wednesday evening at Fair Funeral Home. At other times the family will receive friends at the residence.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Rockingham County, P.O. Box 281, Wentworth, N.C. 27375.

Dorothy Power Stevens

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Dorothy Power Stevens, 94, of 5130 Union Church Road, died Monday, Jan. 13, 2003 at Berry Hill Nursing Home.

Born March 1, 1908, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of George Edward Power and Eva Gosney Power. She was a member of the Main Street United Methodist Church.

She was married to Charles Melvin Stevens. In addition to her husband, of South Boston, she is survived by one son, Thomas E. Stevens of South Boston; and two grandchildren.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Doug Martin officiating. Interment will be in Halifax Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Powell Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the residence.

Nannie Bell Williams Strange

DANVILLE, Va. - Nannie Bell Williams Strange, 73, of 1409 Oak Hill Road, died Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, at Riverside Health Care.

Born Nov. 9, 1929, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Walter Williams, who predeceased her and Almeda Adams Williams, who survives.

She was employed for several years at American Furniture Company in Martinsville. She was a member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Cascade.

She was married to Percy Strange, who predeceased her.

In addition to her mother of Cascade, she is survived by five daughters, Dorothy Strange Motley, Patricia Ann Strange, Tanya Strange Easley, all of Danville, Gloria Strange Gravely and Annie Strange Dillard, both of Martinsville; a stepdaughter, Bridget Martin of Washington, D.C.; 10 sons, Charlie Edward Strange, Leon Strange, Richard Wayne Strange, Gordon Lynn Strange, all of Danville, Curtis Jerome Strange, Marvin Larnell Strange, both of Cascade, Michael Anthony Strange, David E. Strange, both of Axton, James Daniel Strange of Reidsville, N.C. and Keith Bernard Strange of Danville; two stepsons, Calvin Thomas of Newport News and Percy Martin of Washington, D.C.; 11 sisters, Leona Hairston, Shirley Ann Strange, Mary Wytch, Virginia Ingram, Donna Adams, all of Cascade, Martha Wilson of Eden, N.C., Wanda Nowlin of High Point, N.C., Josephine Stockton, Patti Giles, both of Martinsville, Rosetta Keen of Axton and Catherine Dillard of Vernon Hill; four brothers, Grover Williams, Joseph Williams, both of Rahway, N.J., Freddie Williams of Martinsville and Charles Williams of Cascade; 37 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

In addition to her father, she was predeceased by a daughter, Joyce Strange Gravely and three sisters, Viola Williams Adams, Alberta Williams Walker and Annie Williams Best.

The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church with Dr. John W. Tinsley officiating. Interment will follow in the Strange Family Cemetery, Cascade.

The family received friends 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home and at other times will be at the residence.

Magggie Bailey White

DANVILLE, Va. - Maggie Bailey White, 88, of 326 Sycamore St., died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, at Stratford Health Care.

Born April 2, 1914, in Danville, she was the daughter of John Bailey and Cora Hairston Bailey.

She was a business owner. She attended Loyal Baptist Church.She was married to Elijah G. White, who predeceased her.

She is survived by a brother, Oscar DePriest Bailey of the residence and four sisters, Ola B. Coleman of Raleigh, N.C., Thelma B. Styron of Newport News, Clarice B. Slade and Evelyn B. Gausney, both of Danville.

The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at Loyal Baptist Church with the Rev. Lovell Maxwell officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.

A viewing will be held 4-8 p.m. Wednesday ay Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home.

The family will be at the residence.

Ruth Womack

DANVILLE, Va. - Ruth Womack, 61, of 6531 Old Richmond Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003 in Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Jan. 1, 1942, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Marie Glass Womack and John Womack, who survives.

She was employed in the Food Service Department at Danville Regional Medical Center and was a member of the Riceville Baptist Church.

In addition to her father, of the residence, she is survived by two sisters, Joan Womack of Washington, DC and Emily Womack of Richmond, VA; three brothers, Edward Womack of Danville, Michael Womack of Panama City, FL and Thomas Womack of Cascade.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.

Helene ‘Bumps' Starr Lemons

DANVILLE, Va. - Helene Starr Lemons, 85, of 167 Godfrey Street, died Saturday, May 25, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center.

She was born April 19, 1917, in Danville, she was the daughter of Edgar Avery Starr and Jeanette Hanks Starr. Her sisters Thelma Starr, Jewel Starr Matthews and Dympress Starr Wooldridge all preceded her in death.

A Danville native and longtime resident of the Monroe Street area, she attended George Washington High School where she enjoyed history and cheerleading. She was married September 4, 1934, to John Carroll Lemons, Sr. who preceded her in death. After living in twenty-eight states, she returned to this area where she devoted her life to raising three granddaughters. As a lifelong animal lover, she was loving caregiver to hundreds of cats. Throughout her life, she remained passionate about roller skating, dancing, music, animals and bingo.

Survivors include three granddaughters, Kimberly Lemons Snowdy, Eden, North Carolina, Kelly Lemons Brown and Katherine Ann Lemons, both of Danville, Virginia; two sons, Rodney Matthew Lemons of Ridgeway, Virginia and John "Booie" Lemons of Daytona, Florida; one niece, Patricia Wooldridge Blume of Baltimore, Maryland; two grandsons-in-law, Ronnie Snowdy and William Brown; one future grandson-in-law, Shane Stoyer; devoted family of friends; and nineteen cats.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 28, 2002 at 7 P.M. from The Townes Funeral Home Memorial Chapel.

Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements and the family will receive friends at the residence of her granddaughter, Kelly Lemons Brown, 2360 Berry Hill Road.

Annette Marie Moore

PELHAM, N.C. - Annette Marie Moore, 40, of 449 Poole Road, died Monday, May 27, 2002, at the residence of her mother, 501 Poole Road.

Born May 8, 1962, in Eden, she was the daughter of David Franklin Moore and Virginia Kennon Moore Jackson, who survive.

She had lived most of her life in Eden and Pelham and had worked for Nestle Carnation Company. She was a member of Mayfield Baptist Church and had been in declining health since March 2001.

Survivors, in addition to her parents, include one stepfather, Duane Jackson of Pelham; one son, Russell Wayne Critzer of the residence; two brothers, Steve Moore and John Moore, both of Pelham.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Chapel with the Rev. Michael Kent officiating. Interment will follow at Schoolfield Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Swicegood Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence of her mother, 501 Poole Road in Pelham.

The family suggests memorials may be made to Hospice of Alamance County, P.O. Box 2122, Burlington, N.C. 27216 or The Caring House, 2625 Pickett Road, Durham, N.C. 27705.

Arnie Stevens

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Arnie Ritchie Waller Stevens, 89, of 103 Rose Hill Drive, died May 26, 2002, at Woodview Nursing Home.

Born June 6, 1912, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of James Richard Waller and Jessie Lula Waller.

She was married to Floyd Elmer Stevens. She was a member of the Oak Ridge Seventh Day Adventist Church.

Survivors include one son, Lewis H. Stevens of Nathalie; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by one son, Floyd T. Stevens; and four brothers, Gus Lewis Waller, Willard W. Waller, Woodman Ford Waller, and Deroy Evans Waller.

The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Stevens Family Cemtery in Republican Grove with the Rev. Coy Terry officiating.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Powell Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence of Macheal and Tami Saunders, 1040 Charles Lane in Halifax.

Elmer Callands

GRETNA, Va. - Elmer Callands, 80, of 300 Buck Track Road, died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2002, in Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Feb. 12, 1922, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Pearl Callands and Betty Miller Callands.

He was an army veteran of World War II, a retired chemical operator with American Consignment Company in New Jersey and was a member of Mt. Airy Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Illa Callands of the residence; two brothers, the Rev. Pearl Callands Jr. of Montgomery, Ala. and Thomas Callands of Altavista; and three sisters, Evangelist Madeline Gass of Rawlway, N.J., Minnie Mitchell of Elizabeth, N.J. and Ora Rodgers of Montgomery, Ala.

He was predeceased by seven brothers, Eddie, Aaron, Jessie, Clifton, Johnny, Herman and "Red" Callands; and three sisters, Gracie Adams, Sylvia Graves and Elizabeth Callands.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Mt. Airy Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert P. King officiating. Interment will follow in the Greene Family Cemetery with military rites by VFW 4165 and DAV 46.

The family will receive friends 3-7 p.m. at Miller Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Judy Cousins Dalton

DANVILLE, Va. - Judy Cousins Dalton, of 153 Dunmore Avenue, died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2002, at her residence after four years in declining health.

Born Sept. 14, 1948, in the Callands community of Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of George H. Cousins Sr. and Mildred Horsley Cousins.

She graduated from Chatham High School and was a member of Liberty Baptist Church, Callands.

In addition to her parents of Callands, she is survived by her husband, Randy L. Dalton of the residence; a daughter, Kristy Dalton of the residence; a son, Kenneth Motley of Apex, N.C.; a brother, George H. Cousins, Jr. of Danville; and a sister, Joan Wood of Danville.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Townes Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park.

The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Townes Funeral Home and will at other times at the residence.

Hollis Lyndsey Davis

DANVILLE, Va. - Hollis Lyndsey Davis, 97, of 2017 Carter Street, died Friday, August 30, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born March 24, 1905, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Charlie Greene Davis and Cora Mae Davis.

Mr. Davis worked in the maintenance department of the Post Office and was a veteran of World War II, serving in the US Army. He was a member of St. Lukes United Methodist Church and Poquosen Tribe of the Improved Order of Red Men 24.

He married Annie Howell Davis on January 20, 1945.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Charlotte Southard of Lynchburg; a son-in-law, Les Young Jr. of Danville; a grandson, Les Young III of Danville; a granddaughter, Tammie Gentry of Ringgold; and two sisters, Gladys Walker of Midlothian and Louise Easley of Powatan.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Colleen Young; a granddaughter, Melissa Southard; and 10 brothers and sisters.

The graveside funeral will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday at Highland Burial Park with The Rev. Randy Duncan officiating and military honors by American Legion Dan River Post 1097 Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Barker Funeral Home and at other times at 560 Chaney Store Road, Ringgold.

Samuel J. East

CHATHAM, Va. - Samuel J. East, age 78, of 5413 Chalk Level Road, Chatham, Virginia, died Saturday, August 31, 2002 at his residence.

Mr. East was born March 1, 1924 in Pittsylvania County. He was the son of the late John J. East and Ellen Forney East.

He is survived by his wife, Iris Powell East of the residence. He is also survived by one daughter, Jo Ann East Arnold and her husband, Danny Arnold of Saltville, Va.; one brother, Paul B. East of Chatham; two grandchildren, John Jefferson Arnold of New York and Angela A. Mantsura of Florida.

He was predeceased by two brothers, John D. East and Harry F. East; he was also predeceased by six sisters, Ora E. Perdue, Ruth E. Scruggs, Gladys E. Lewis, Edna E. Townsend, Bertha East and Cora E. Barbour.

He was a member of Sheva Church of Christ. He lived his entire life in the Sheva Community. He graduated from Chatham High School. He was a retired employee of the Chatham Post Office and was a retired farmer.

Funeral services will be conducted Monday, September 2, 2002, at 2:00 p.m. from the Sheva Church of Christ by the Ministers Larry L. Owen and Melvin Styons. Interment will be in the Sheva Church of Christ Cemetery in Chatham, Va.

The family will receive friends Sunday, September 1, 2002, from 7 to 8 p.m. at Sheva Church of Christ and at other times will be at the residence, 5413 Chalk Level Road, Chatham, Va.

The family suggests in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to the Sheva Church of Christ Building Fund.

Mary Terry Newton

HALIFAX, Va. - Mary Terry Newton, 101, of 3144 North Terry's Bridge Road, died Friday, Aug. 30, 2002, at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Born Nov. 23, 1900, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of James Edward Terry and Maude Tatum Terry.

She was married to Frank Walker Newton, who predeceased her.

She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church, where she was a member of the WMU.

She is survived by three daughters, Agnes N. Seay of Halifax, Grace N. Compton of Scottsburg and Catherine N. Royster of South Boston; one son, Henry "Pete" Newton of Halifax; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two sons, William Newton and Wayne Newton.

The funeral will be held 4 p.m. Sunday at Powell Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Tony Brooks and the Rev. Terry Blevins officiating. Interment will be in Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Powell Funeral Home and will at other times at the residence.

The family suggests memorials be made to Bethel Baptist Church.
