Pearl Edna Nutter

DANVILLE, Va. - Pearl Edna Nutter, 96, formerly of 1302 Lamar St., died Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2002, at DePaul Medical Center, Norfolk.

Born May 2, 1906, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Samuel Logan Sr. and Isabelle V. Logan.

She was married to Vance Nutter, who predeceased her. She was a homemaker.

She is survived by two sons, Adrian Adams of Bronx, N.Y. and Curtis Adams of Clearwater, Fla.; a daughter, Irene Adams of Bronx, N.Y.; and a sister, Catherine Artis of Norfolk.

The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Monday at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Letcher Coleman officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.

She may be viewed 4-8 p.m. Sunday at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home.

Gaynell Setliff Collins

DANVILLE, Va. - Gaynell Setliff Collins, formerly of 201 Girard Street and more recently of The Brian Center, Yanceyville, went home to be with her Lord, May 22nd at Danville Regional Medical Center, where she had been a patient for two days. Mrs. Collins had been in declining health since 1988 and a victim of Alzheimer's Disease.

Born July 6, 1919 in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of the late Jake A. Setliff and Sallie Bat Hopkins Setliff. She was retired from Dan River, Inc. after approximately 50 years of service. A member of Forest Lawn Baptsit Church, she served many years as president of her Sunday School Class.

Mrs. Collins was first married to Paul S. Appling, who predeceased her in 1957. In 1962, she was married to James H. Collins, who predeceased her in 1996.

She is survived by one daughter, Polly Appling Tivnan, of Danville, one grand-daughter, Shannon Tivnan of Durham, NC, a sister, Peggy S. Williams and a brother, Rev. Gilmer Setliff, both of Danville, and a great number of nieces and nephews who loved her dearly.

She was predeceased by five brothers, Gene Setliff, J.D. Setliff, Paul Setliff, Ester Setliff and Ralph Setliff.

Funeral services will be conducted from Swicegood Chapel, Saturday, May 25th at 2 PM by Rev. Daryl Joyce and Rev. James Ward, with interment following in Mountain View Cemetery. Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday evening, May 24th, from 7:00 - 8:30 PM. At other times they will be at the home of her daughter at 203 Girard Street and her brother at 376 Cedarbrook Drive.

In lieu of flowers, request is made for donations to the Alzheimer's Association.

Steven Hazelwood

RINGGOLD, Va. - Steven Paul Hazelwood, 26, of 801 Mountain Hill Road, Pittsylvania County, died Wednesday, May 22, 2002, at University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville as the result of an automobile accident on Iris Lane Saturday, May 18, 2002.

Born Aug. 17, 1975, he was the son of Shirley Rice Caswell, who survives. He worked for Leroy Ernest Spearin Roofing Company in Ringgold and attended Community Baptist Church in Yanceyville, N.C.

He was married to Curlise Church Hazelwood, who survives.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, and mother of Danville, include one stepfather, Charles Caswell of Danville; three daughters, Brittney Hazelwood and Samantha Hazelwood, both of Ringgold, and Shirley Ann Hazelwood of Kentucky; two sons, Steven Paul Hazelwood Jr. of Kentucky, and Dylan Hazelwood of Ringgold; three sisters, Mary Hazelwood and Jamie Caswell, both of Danville, and Crystal Hazelwood of Florida; three brotherrs, Charles Hazelwood, Joseph Hazelwood and James Caswell, all of Danville; and one stepgrandmother, Marion Harris of Danville.

The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Friday at United Bethel Methodist Church cemetery on Park Springs Road in Caswell County, N.C. with the Rev. Jack Robertson officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel and other times will be at the residence of Shirley Caswell, 632 Oakland Drive in Danville.

Frances Waller Holt

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Frances Waller Holt, 65, of 921 Pembroke Road, died Sunday, May 19, 2002, at Moses Cone Hospital.

Born Nov. 22, 1936, in Pittsylvania County, Va., she was the daughter of Willie T. Waller and Louise Johnson Waller.

She was married to James Kemp Holt, who predeceased her. She was a member of Faith Free Will Baptist Church and was employed by Harris Teeter.

Survivors include two brothers, William D. Waller and Vernon T. Waller, both of Dry Fork, Va., and a good friend, Betty Thompson of Greensboro.

She was predeceased, in addition to her husband and parents, by one sister, Mildred Grubb.

The graveside service was held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Green Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Vic Redding officiating.

Lucy Leftwich

DANVILLE, Va. - Lucy Ann Leftwich, 82, of 961 Sugartree Church Road, died Sunday, May 19, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Jan. 29, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Boney Walton and Della Kate Tarpley Walton.

She was married to Dorsey Leftwich Jr., who predeceased her. She was employed at Stanley Garments and Pulaski Furniture Company for many years prior to her retirement. She was a member of Union Hall Baptist Church.

Survivors include four daughters, Katie Hall of Dry Fork; Barbara Brown and Gail Edwards, both of Atlanta, Ga., Wyonnia Hagans of Lynchburg; two sons, Boney R. Leftwich of Martinsville, Lewis Leftwich of Huber Heights, Ohio; two sisters, Delsie Woods of Chatham, Lydia K. Murrell of Dry Fork; one brother, Raleigh J. Walton of Chatham; and a number of grandchildren.

The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Friday at Union Hall Baptist Church with Pastor Sherman Craft officaiting. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Sylvia Lewis

DANVILLE, Va. - Sylvia Lewis, 51, of 109 Kemper Court, died suddenly Sunday, May 19, 2002, at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C. following a brief illness.

Born July 23, 1950, in Danville, she was the daughter of Eugene Clyde Lewis and Evelyn Lewis.

She was educated in the Danville Public School System and worked at the Fred T. Hatcher Center in Blairs. She was a member of North New Hope Baptist Church.

Survivors include one sister, Joyce Lewis Herbin of Reidsville, N.C.; three brothers, Andrew Lewis and Kenneth Lewis of Danville; and Robert Lee Lewis of Charlotte, N.C.

The funeral will be held 3 p.m. Thursday at North New Hope Baptist Church, 123 Old Piney Forest Road with the Rev. Willard D. Smith officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.

The viewing was held 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Claudine Mayes

PATRICK SPRINGS, Va. - Claudine Dalton Mayes, 66, of 1782 Koger Mill Road, died Tuesday, May 21, 2002, at the residence.

Born August 28, 1935, in Carroll County, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Robert Rush Dalton and the late Trudie Quesenberry Dalton.

She was married to Gordon R. Mayes, who predeceased her in 1998. She was an employee of Bassett Walker Knitting Company (VF Knitwear) with 35 years service, prior to her retirement. She was a member of Salem United Methodist Church since 1974. She was a delegate to annual conference, past secretary of United Methodist Women, Pastor Parish Relations Committee, Dan River Emmaus, sang in Salem Womens Choir and Salem Emmaus Choir and started Salem Quilting Class.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was also preceded in death by brother, Carl Dalton and grandson, Jeremy Martin.

Survived by daughters: Patricia Mayes Wyatt of Martinsville, Virginia, Tammy Mayes Joyce of Stuart, Virginia, and Molly Mayes Motley of Chatham, Virginia; sons: David Wayne Mayes of Largo, Florida, and Josh Mayes of Fort Riley, Kansas; sisters, Kathleen Miller of Stratford, CT, and Gerogia Kimble of Laurel Fork, Virginia; brothers, Robert Dalton, Melvin Dalton, Tom Dalton, Donald Dalton, and O'Dell Dalton, all from Laurel Fork, Virginia; and twelve grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held at Friday, May 24, 2002 at 2:00 PM at Salem United Methodist Church.

Family will receive friends Thursday night from 7-8:30 PM at Collins Funeral Chapel. In charge of service is Rev. Bob H. McAden. Interment will be in Roselawn Burial Park.

Beverly Murray

BURLINGTON, N.C. - Beverly G. Murray, 86, of Cooper Cemetery Road, died Tuesday, May 21, 2002, at Chapel Hill Rehabilitation Center following a long period of declining health.

Born July 16, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Samuel G. and Maggie Moore Murray.

He was married to Ruby A. Murray, who predeceased him June 16, 1999. He attended Pittsylvania County Schools and farmed for many years prior to his retirement. He was a member of Lea Bethel Baptist Church in Prospect Hill.

Survivors include one daughter, Sylvia M. Cates of Burlington; one son, Glenn A. Murray of Danville; one sister, Sadie M. Watson of Burlington; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two stepgrandchildren.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Harrelson Funeral Home Chapel in Yanceyville, with the Rev. Claude Harrelson officiating. Interment will follow at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens in Danville, Va.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Harrelson Funeral Home and other times will be at 384 Ross Acres Road #2 in Burlington.

Major Myers

PELHAM, N.C. - Major W. Myers Sr., 71, of 1125 Arch Cook Road, died Monday, May 20, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born July 29, 1930, in Rockingham County, he was a son of Willie Clifton Myers and Carrie Crews Myers.

He was married to Thelma Lucas Myers, who predeceased him in 2001. He lived on Arch Cook Road most of his life and worked at Dan River Mills until retiring in 1995. He was a member of Holland Road Baptist Church and had been in declining health for ten years.

Survivors include two daughters, Brenda Richmond of Penhook, Va. and Peggy Harville of Axton, Va.; five sons, the Rev. Mike Myers of Brosville, Va., Roger Myers, Robert C. "Bug" Myers, and Major W. Myers Jr, all of Pelham, and Kenneth R. Myers of Burlington; three sisters, Reva Talbott of Hurt, Va., Hazel Wilkerson of Pelham, and Phyllis Ludwick of Texas; one brother, Travis Myers of Danville, Va.; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; and three step-great-great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased, in addition to his parents by one sister, Mazzie Bowman, and one brother, Ryland Myers.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Swicegood Chapel with the Revs. James Mayes and Aubrey Dewberry officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park.

The family received friends 6-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel and at other times at the residence.

William Rodgers

DANVILLE, Va. - William Harvey Rodgers, 68, of 2217 Old Halifax Road, died Sunday, May 19, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born April 11, 1934, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Otis Rodgers and Nora Irby Rodgers.

He was married to Mary Rodgers, who survives. He had been employed by Dan River Inc. and Southern Processors Tobacco Company.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include one son, Kenneth Rodgers of Pittsylvania County; three stepsons, Sam Jones, Anthony Davis and Joe Garrett all of the Danville area; one stepdaghter, Queen Southern of Yanceyville, N.C.; three sisters, Julia Farrow and Shirley Dodson, both of Danville, and Ella Mae Brown of Richmond; one brother, Herman Walker of East Orange, N.J.; and a number of grandchildren.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Ringgold with the Rev. Terry Ferguson officiating. Interment will follow at Floral Hills Memory Garden.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Clara Scearce

DANVILLE, Va. - Clara Bell Foster Scearce, 89, of 842 Westover Drive, died Tuesday, May 21, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born April 11, 1913, in Martinsville, she was a daughter of John T. Foster and Minnie Ola Haley Foster.

She was married first to Harry Mountcastle, who predeceased her, and then to Dewey Statzer, who also predeceased her, and then to Lawrence Scearce, who survives. She lived all of her life in Danville and was employed at Dan River Mills until retiring in 1972. She was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy and had been in declining health for five years.

Survivors include two sons, Herman "Dooney" Mountcastle of Danville and Donald Lee Mountcastle of Bristol; one stepson, Hobert Statzer of Woodbridge; one stepdaughter, Hilda Osterbur of Ringgold; one brother, Clyde Foster of Seattle, Wash.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; 13 step-grandchildren; 26 step-great-grandchildren; and three step-great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased, in addition to her parents, by two sisters and three brothers.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Swicegood Chapel with the Revs. Charles Hawkins and Jack Robertson officiating. Interment will follow at Schoolfield Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home, and at other times at the residence.

Clarence William Coates

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Clarence William Coates, 77, of 217 Wilmoth Ave., died Aug. 24, 2002, at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Born March 28, 1925, in Halifax County, he was the son of Clem Edward Coates and Elsie Mae Shelton Coates. He was married to Dora Bane Coates.

He is survived by two sisters, Frances Coates Conner of Halifax and Peggy Coates Clarke of Nathalie; and one brother, Lee Roy Coates of Halifax.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Oak Ridge Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Tony Brooks officiating.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Powell Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of his sister, Frances Conner, 2028 North Terry's Bridge Road, Halifax.

Clay Gravely Eanes

AXTON, Va. - Clay Gravely Eanes, 75, of 2974 Lawrence Drive, died Friday, Aug. 23, 2002, at Memorial Hospital of M/HC.

Born Jan. 16, 1927, in Axton, he was the son of William Adam Eanes and Emma Lawrence Eanes.

He attended Mount Vernon Baptist Church.

He is survived by one sister, Ninna Garrett of Danville; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by several brothers and sisters.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Norris Funeral Chapel with the Rev. George Agnew officiating. Interment will be in the Eanes Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral at Norris Funeral Services.
