Doris Garber

HALIFAX, Va. - Doris Vaughan Garber, 62, of 1041 McKendree Church Road, died Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center.
Born Aug. 13, 1939, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Robert “Pete” Vaughan and Susie Moore Vaughan.
She was married to Garland Lee Garber, who survives. She was a member of the McKendree United Methodist Church.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of Halifax, include two daughters, Pamela Reynolds and Michele Anderson, both of Halifax; one son, Alan Garber of Raleigh, N.C.; four brothers, Charlie, Elmer and Bobby Vaughan, all of Halifax and Cecil Vaughan of South Boston; and one grandson.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents, by three brothers, Junior, James T. and Shirley Vaughan.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at McKendree United Methodist Church with the Rev. Rudolph Jacobs and the Rev. Luther Ramsey officiating. Interment icon will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Powell Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
Powell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Joseph Haley Jr.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Joseph Kelly Haley Jr., 85, died Aug. 13, 2001, at the residence.
Born Nov. 6, 1915, in Danville, he was a son of Joseph Kelly Haley Sr. and Pearl Clark Haley.
He was married to Ruth Haley, who survives. He was a colonel in the U.S. Army until his retirement in 1972.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two children, Mary Stuart Haley of Arlington and Joseph Kelly Haley III of Richmond; two grandchildren; two brothers, Harry and Richard Haley, both of Danville; one sister, Katherine Haley of Danville; and five stepchildren.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, at Ft. Myer Chapel in Ft. Myer. Interment icon will follow at Arlington National cemetery with full military honors.
The family suggests memorials be made to Hospice of the Chesapeake, 8424 Veterans Highway, Millersivlle, Md. 21108.

Robert Hairston

DANVILLE, Va. - Robert J. Hairston, 88, of 1713 Camp View Road, died Aug. 20, 2001, at Riverside Health Care Center.
Born Aug. 22, 1912, he was the son of Betty Hairston and George Hairston.
He was married to Geneva Hairston, who survives. He was a veteran of the United States Army and retired from Dan River Mills. He was a member of Vance Street Baptist Church, where he was a member of the deacon and usher board, as well as, former chairman of the deacon board.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three stepdaughters, Barbara Holland of Roanoke, Areva Boyd of Hyattsville, Md. and Ophelia Roher of Columbus, Ohio and one stepson, John Walton of Danville.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Vance Street Baptist Church with the Rev. Herbert Dickerson officiating. Interment icon will follow at Oak Hill cemetery.
The viewing will be held 4-8 p.m. Friday at Beavers Funeral Home Chapel.
The family also will receivefriends at the residence.
Beavers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

John Marshall Hankins

SUFFOLK, Va. - John Marshall Hankins, age 89, of Keeling, Va., died Saturday, Aug. 18, 2001 at 201 Linden Ave., Suffolk, Va.
Mr. Hankins was born in Halifax County, Va. on June 7, 1912, a son of the late Walter Wood Hankins and Rosa Walton Hankins.
He was married to Margaret Fitzgerald Hankins, who predeceased him. He was also predeceased by two brothers, Walter W. Hankins, Jr. of Ingram, Va. and Robert S. Hankins of Rustburg, Va.
Mr. Hankins was a retired farmer and is past president of the West Piedmont Planning District Commission, the Pittsylvania County Planning Commission and the Piedmont Sertoma Club. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.
He is survived by three sons and their wives, John M. Hankins, Jr. and his wife, Violet of Suffolk, Va., James F. Hankins and his wife, Mina of Danville and H. Douglas Hankins and his wife, Patty of Chesapeake, Va.
Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Dewey Henderson Sr.

DANVILLE, Va. - Dewey McLore Henderson Sr., 68, of 847 Pine St., died Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 14, 1933, in Blanche, N.C., he was a son of Jack Henderson and Pearl Stevens Henderson Allen.
He was married to Ellen A. Henderson, who predeceased him. He was a retired veteran of the U.S. Army, having served 25 years and was employed by M & M Furniture for many years.
Survivors include three daughters, Deborah Henderson, Sharon Henderson and Wanda Henderson, all of Danville; three sons, Dewey Henderson Jr., Jerome Henderson and Robert Henderson, all of Danville; and a number of grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. James Stewart officiating. Interment icon will follow at Highland Burial Park with military rites performed by American Legion Post 29.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home and other times at the residence of Wanda Henderson, 845 Claiborne St. in Danville.
Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Harry Kirkland Jr.

FT. WASHINGTON, Md. - Harry Thomas Kirkland Jr., 29, died Monday, Aug. 20, 2001, at St. Thomas More Health Care Center in Hyattsville.
Born June 6, 1972, in Halifax County, he was the son of Mildred Kirkland-Taylor and Harry T. Kirkland Sr., who survive.
Survivors, in addition to his mother of Hopewell, Va. and father of Brookneal, Va. include two sisters, Brenda Kirkland and Melinda Kirkland Daniel, both of Lynchburg, Va.; one brother, John Kirkland of Roanoke, Va. and stepfather, Richard Taylor of Hopewell.
The funeral will be held 12 p.m. Saturday at Spring Hill Baptist Church in Brookneal with the Rev. Ceasor Johnson officiating. Interment icon will follow at the church cemetery.
The viewing will be held one hour prior to the service.
The family will recieve friends at the residence of Harry Kirkland Sr., 5730 Staunton Hill Road in Brookneal.

Mary Madden

DANVILLE, Va. - Mary Elizabeth Madden, 61, of 137 Warren Street, Danville, Virginia died Monday, August 20, 2001 at the Stratford Health Care Center.
She was born August 3, 1940 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, the only daughter of the late Will and Cordelia Williams Madden.
She is survived by a dear cousin, Charles Oliver, of the residence and other dear relatives and friends.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 137 Warren Street, Danville.
Funeral services for Ms. Mary Elizabeth Madden will be conducted on Friday, August 24, 2001 at 2:30 PM from the Trinity Baptist Church with Rev. William Dixon officiating. Interment icon will follow in Floral Hills cemetery.
Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements for Ms. Mary Elizabeth Madden.

Mattie Matherly

DANVILLE, Va. - Mattie Clark Matherly, 80, formerly of 274 Fagan St., died Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2001, at Riverside Health Care Center.
Born Oct. 28, 1920, in Danville, she was the daughter of John Henry Clark and Iva Chandler Clark.
She was married to Forest O. Matherly, who predeceased her. She lived in Danville most of her life and was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Ann Matherly of Lynchburg and Dorothy M. Alridge of Charlotte, N.C.; one son, James Owen Matherly of Lynchburg; six sisters, Arlene C. Pickeral, Thelma C. Gleber, Joyce C. Ladd and June C. Burnett, all of Danville, Addie C. Stieher of LaGrange, Ga. and Annette C. Powell of Greensboro, N.C.; two brothers, Larry Clark of Danville and Jack Clark of Petersburg; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by one brother, Delbert Clark.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Fred Cox officiating.
The family will receive friends 12-1 p.m. Friday at Barker Funeral Home.

Robert ‘Bob’ Mayes Jr.

ROSSVILLE, Tenn. - Robert “Bob” E. Mayes Jr., 60, died Sunday, Aug. 12, 2001.
He served four years in the U.S. Air Force and was a police officer in Newport News from 1964 until 1969. In 1968, he was honored as policeman of the year. He was food and beverage manager for Strawberry Banks and joined Dobbs House International, where he retired as executive vice president after 17 years of employment. He purchased and operated the Circle Cafe in Memphis from 1986 until 1996. He was currently employed with Diversified Capital Corporation of Tennessee, a mortgage-lending company.
Survivors include two daughters, Tammy L. D’Eramo of Poquoson and Hope E. Stewart of Fayetteville, N.C.; one son, Robert E. Mayes III of Germantown; two stepdaughters, Cindy Lineberger and Amy Minter, both of Atlanta; his father, Robert E. Mayes Sr. of Ringgold; three brothers, Garland Mayes of California, Roger Mayes of North Carolina and Ronnie Mayes of Virginia; and five grandchildren.
The graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Jack Robertson officiating.
The family suggests memorials be made to the National Down Syndrome Society, 666 Broadway, New York, N.Y.

Dave Moore

JAVA, Va. - Dave Thomas “Pete” Moore, 72, of 12188 Chatham Road, died Aug. 22, 2001, at Halifax Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 28, 1928, in Halifax County, he was the son of Letcher Moore and Nora Dunaway Moore.
He was a member of Winns Creek Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sisters, Mary Calhoun of New Preston, Conn., Laura Saunders and Percy Crews, both of Nathalie.
The funeral will be held 4 p.m. Saturday at Powell Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. David Dickerson officiating. Interment icon will follow at Halifax Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will recieve friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Powell Funeral Home and other times at the residence of Laura Saunders, 5099 Liberty Road in Nathalie.
Powell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
