Mary Wood

WHITMELL, Va. - Mrs. Mary F. Wood, 96, of Whitmell was called home to be with the Lord on November 8, 2001 after a long life of ministry to others. Widowed in 1957, Mrs. Wood maintained her own home until October of this year when several health problems forced her to be hospitalized.
Mary Fanny Wood, nee Inman, was born on January 6, 1905 in Axton, Virginia, the fourth child and third daughter of Amelia Louise Carter and Soloman Lee Inman. The two-story Victorian farmhouse where she was raised is still standing and in relative good repair today.
As was the custom in those days, Mary Fanny was named for her two grandmothers: Mary Fuller Inman and Frances (Fanny) Ann Reaves Carter. Mary Wood never knew her paternal grandmother, who died when Mary’s father Solomon was a young child, but she spent many happy childhood days visiting her maternal grandmother, Frances Carter of Sandy River, who was actually a native of California.
Mary’s grandmother, Frances Carter, was a child of the Gold Rush era. Her parents John Reaves and Mary McDougal Turner had traveled to California in wagon trains from Tennessee and Ohio respectively and settled in Amador County. Mary’s grandfather, Joseph Carter, met Frances when he left his home in Pittsylvania County and traveled West after the Civil War to try his hand at gold mining. Mary’s mother, Amelia, was one of the five children born in California before Joseph returned to Virginia. Frances and Joseph had five more children, the last of which was born after Joseph’s death.
The industrious habits of the newly widowed Frances Carter kept her family together and prosperous. Frances’ children were so prolific that Mary Wood was one of her ninety grandchildren. Mary Wood inherited her grandmother’s energy and industry. At the age of nineteen she married John Henry Wood, a widower with seven children. Together they had six more children. Mary was gifted in two areas that blessed her husband and children: the love of young children and a love of selling. Every picture of Mary Wood shows a baby on her hip, her own or another family member’s. Mary’s care for young children extended to helping to raise several of her great-grandchildren. When she wasn’t busy with a baby she was behind the counter in her husband’s country store on the Franklin Turnpike, meeting and making friends. Later on in life her nightly routine included phone conversations with each of her friends, siblings, and cousins. The most important event in Mary’s life occurred when she was invited to attend the Salem Church of Christ on the Strawberry Road in the early 1970’s. Already a grandmother for decades, she heard the gospel message and trusted Jesus Christ to be her Lord and Savior. She was a faithful member of the church until her health prevented her regular attendance.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, John, and one son, James Ray Wood. She is survived by one brother, Solomon Inman, five children, Henry Lee Wood, Louise Wood Vann, Walter A. Wood, Lorraine Wood Anderson, and Ronald Wayne Wood, sixteen grandchildren, twenty-nine great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 11:00 in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Herchel Stone.
Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
