Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Mollye Allen

CHATHAM, Va. - Mollye Frances Allen, 92, died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, at the residence of her nephew, Hunt M. Allen, in Rockhill, S.C.
Born April 25, 1909, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Daniel Coleman Allen and Mollie Fannie Haymore.
She was a member of Chatham Baptist Church.
Survivors include 15 nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Scott Funeral Home with the Rev. Rand Forder officiating. Interment icon will follow at Chatham Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at Scott Funeral Home and other times at the residence of Richard Allen, 481 Beverly Heights Road in Chatham.
Scott Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jun O. Aquilo

DANVILLE, Va. - Jun O. Aquilo, 57, of 355 Bell Dr., died Sunday, December 2, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Aquilo was born in Santor, Baggao, Cagayan, Philippines on April 16, 1944, to the late Ignacio Aquilo and Isidora Aquilo, who survives.
He was married to Lina R. Aquilo, who survives. He studied Pre-med at the University of the East in Manila, Philippines, and he also attended the School of Medical Technology in Danville, VA. He worked at Danville Regional Medical Center as a Staff Medical Technologist since 1967.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include his mother: Isidora Aquilo of Cagayan, Philippines; three sons: Dennis R. Aquilo of Winona Lake, IN, Norman R. Aquilo of Danville, VA, and Jun R. Aquilo of Virginia Beach, VA; one daughter: Nanette A. Young of Lakewood, CO; one daughter-in-law: Lisa S. Aquilo of Winona Lake, IN; one son-in-law: Jim Young of Lakewood, CO; one brother: Peping Aquilo of the Philippines; one sister: Mercydita Agustin of New York; and 16 nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his father: Ignacio Aquilo of Cagayan, Philippines; one brother: Romulo O. Aquilo of the Philippines; and one sister: Tomasa Aquilo Corsino of the Philippines.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 5, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. from Townes Memorial Chapel by Father David V. McGuire. Interment icon will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday night from 7:00-8:30 p.m. at Townes Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence, 355 Bell Drive.

James Brown

RICHMOND, Va. - James Ray Brown, 62, of 2201 McDonugh St., died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, at Medical College of Virginia Hospitals after four years of declining health.
Born Aug. 22, 1939, in Danville, he was a son of Ernest Linwood Brown and Mary Elizabeth Brown.
He was married in 1975 to Peggy Hayden Brown, who survives. For the past 37 years, he had lived in Richmond, where he was employed for 22 years with Mercer Carpet Company, prior to a decline in health. He was a member of Highland Park Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include two stepsons, Kevin Newton and Eddie Newton, both of Richmond; one daughter, Lisa Marie Brown of the residence; and one brother, Ronald Brown of Mechanicsville.
The graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Schoolfield cemetery with the Rev. Lee Ellison officiating.

Aubrey Ferrell

DANVILLE, Va. - Aubrey Kendrick Ferrell, 77, of 906 Vicar Road, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center after several months of declining health.
Born Sept. 20, 1924, in Danville, he was a son of Jacob Ferrell and Fanny Richardson Ferrell.
He was married June 20, 1947, to Dovie “Bootsie” Abbott Ferrell, who survives. He was a local builder and developer in the Danville area for more than 40 years with the A.K. Ferrell Construction Company. He was an active member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church. He was a member of American Legion Memorial Post 325, Danville Sertoma Club, where he served as past president from 1985-1986, V.F.W. Post 647. He was the founder of the Danville Civic League in the mid-1960s and served 2½ terms on Danville City Council.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include one son, Aubrey K. “Ken” Ferrell II of Danville; two daughters, Patricia F. O’Brien and Karen F. Douglas, both of Danville; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by three brothers, J.T. Ferrell, Clarence Ferrell and Connell Ferrell.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church with the Rev. Randy Duncan officiating. Interment icon will follow at Highland Burial park with graveside military honors performed by American Legion Post 325 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church and other times at the residence.
The family suggests in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to St. Luke’s United Methodist Church Building Fund.

Charlie Gunn

DANVILLE, Va. - Charlie G. Gunn, 74, of 240 Gunn Lane, died Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 5, 1927, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Walter Gunn and Annie Echols Gunn.
He was married to Thelma Gunn, who survives. He was a machine operator for Lorillard Tobacco Co. and was a member of Kentuck Baptist Church, where he served on the deacon board. He was a member of Disabled American Veterans, VFW Post 29, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the Dan River Voters’ League.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include four sons, Charlie G. Gunn of Bronx, N.Y., Mitchell W. Gunn and Carlton Gunn, both of Danville and Anthony S. Gunn of the residence; five daughters, Sandra Carey of Apex, N.C., Deborah Massick of Japan, Nancy Gunn of Danville and Phyllis Gunn and Benita Gunn, both of Fort Washington, Md.; two brothers, Ernest Gunn of Baltimore and Jace Gunn of Danville; three sisters, Helena Farmer of Danville, Catherine Motley of Blairs and Odaris Grastly of Philadelphia; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Kentuck Baptist Church with the Rev. Jessie Fitz officiating. Interment icon will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens with military rites.
The viewing will be held from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Wanza Kirkman

DANVILLE, Va. - Wanza Hall Kirkman, 81, formerly of 642 Arnett Blvd., died Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, at Lewis Gayle Hospital in Salem after five years of declining health and more than one month in the hospital.
Born Sept. 13, 1920, in Princeton, W.Va., she was a daughter of Mose McCllan Hall and Maude Mae Pettry Hall.
She was married in October 1958 to Thomas Virtie Kirkman, who predeceased her Sept. 11, 1995. She moved from Roanoke in 1960 to Danville, where she was a homemaker. She was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church, where she was past president of Circle 3, and served as treasurer. She was also a member of the United Methodist Women.
Survivors include one son, Larry L. Venable of Fredricksburg; one brother, Bobby R. Hall of Greensboro, N.C.; one sister, Betty H. Wolfe of Salem; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.
She was predeceased, in addition to her husband and parents, by one sister, Ruth H. Lawrence.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Tom Barnard and the Rev. Dr. Tom Evans officiating. Interment icon will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

Bobby Nuckles

RINGGOLD, Va. - Robert Clinton “Bobby” Nuckles Sr., 62, of 8940 Kentuck Road, died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, at the residence after one year of declining health.
Born July 28, 1939, in Amherst County, he was a son of Guy Rice Nuckles Sr. and Margaret Staton Nuckles.
He lived in Pittsylvania County and Danville, where he owned and operated Honda of Danville and Bobby’s Repair Service prior to a decline in health. For 18 years, he was employed part time with Pittsylvania County Public Schools as a bus driver. He was a member of Laurel Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Robert Clinton “Robbie” Nuckles Jr. of Danville; two sisters, Ann N. Ferguson of Sutherlin and Mary N. Parsons of Pelham, N.C.; and two brothers, Guy Rice Nuckles Jr. and James G. “Jimmy” Nuckles Sr., both of Sutherlin.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Laurel Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Neal Isom and the Rev. Bill Owsley officiating. Interment icon will follow at the church cemetery.
The family received friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and other times at the residence of Ann Ferguson, 1776 Slayton Road in Sutherlin.
The family suggests memorials be made to the Stephanie L. Ferguson Memorial Scholarship Fund, DCC Educational Foundation, 1008 S. Main St., Danville, Va. 24541.

Calvin Phelps

DANVILLE, Va. - Calvin Neal Phelps, 71, formerly of 564 Twin Arch Drive, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, at Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born Feb. 27, 1930, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Albert William Phelps and Irene Turner Phelps.
He was married to Margie Pryon Phelps, who predeceased him in 1972. He was born in the Mount Cross community of Pittsylvania County and worked at Barker Hamlin Tire Co. and Crane Tire Co., prior to becoming disabled in July 1981. He was a member of Abundant Life Ministry.
Survivors include three daughters, Linda Dean Walker of Danville, Lois Ann Flick of Jacksonville, N.C. and April Dawn Anderson of Greensboro, N.C.; four sons, Jody Lynn Phelps and Raney Neal Phelps, both of Greensboro, N.C., Tracy Kyle Phelps of Lynchburg and Albert Lee Phelps of South Boston; eight sisters, Thelma Ray, Clara Ketchum, Frances Shelton, Marie Dillion and Ruby Dillard, all of Danville; Lillie Krawetz of Chesapeake, Betty Minter of Cascade and Shirley Moorefield of Brosville; three brothers, Bud Edward Phelps and Howard Jackson Phelps, both of Danville, and William Lawson Phelps of Brosville; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Bill Motley officiating. Interment icon will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Swicegood Funeral Home.

Julian Ramsey

DANVILLE, Va. - Roy Julian Ramsey, 87, of 410 Seminole Drive, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, at the residence after several months of declining health.
Born Feb. 12, 1914, in Danville, he was a son of James Frank Ramsey and Gertrude Neagle Ramsey.
He was married Aug. 22, 1938, to Mary Smith Ramsey, who survives. He lived his entire life in the Danville area, where he was employed with Export Leaf Tobacco Company for 37 years and Adams Tobacco Company for seven years prior to his retirement. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served during World War II aboard the LST 622 as a pharmacist mate in the South Pacific from 1943-1945. He was the last surviving member of his generation in his family.
Survivors include one daughter, Barbara R. Conner of Gloucester Point, and one grandchild.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Father David McGuire and the Rev. Gary Milstead officiating. Interment icon will follow at Highland Burial Park with graveside military rites performed by American Legion Post 325.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
The family suggests memorials be made to Hospice Support Services, P.O. Box 2713, Danville, Va. 24541 or Danville Cancer Association, 1225 W. Main St., Danville, Va. 24541.

Ralph Shelton

JAVA, Va. - Ralph Monroe Shelton, 90, of 1636 Yeatts Store Road, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, at Beverly Health Care in Martinsville.
Born June 15, 1911, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Scott Shelton and Ella Logan Shelton.
He was married to Eva Miller Shelton, who survives. He was a retired farmer and member of Riceville Baptist Church, where he served on the board of deacons, and was a member of Riceville Masonic Lodge 286 of Java.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include six sons, James F. Shelton of Silver Springs, Md., Ralph K. Shelton of Greensboro, N.C., Edward B. Shelton of Sacramento, Calif., William S. Shelton of Atlanta, Larry W. Shelton of Virginia Beach and Michael T. Shelton of Petersburg; five daughters, Marian S. Keyes of Chatham, Dorothy S. Diggs of Portsmouth, Geneva S. Dubose of Hyattsville, Md., Sylvia S. Brady of Houston and Wanda S. Carr of Atlanta; 18 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by one son, Olander; one brother, the Rev. David Shelton; and three sisters, Lucinda Barksdale, Fannie Palmer and Dora Miller.
The funeral will be held at noon Friday at Riceville Baptist Church with the Rev. Ronnie Walker officiating. Interment icon will follow at the church cemetery.
The viewing will be held at 11 a.m. until the time of the service Friday at the church.
