Merie Shotwell

ALTON, Va. - Merie Erlene Shotwell, 63, of 6120 Cluster Springs Road, died Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, at the residence.
Born June 30, 1938, in Halifax County, she was a daughter of Grace Lowery Shotwell, who survives, and Alfred Shotwell.
She was a member of Ephesus Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to her mother of Alton, include two brothers, Wayne Shotwell and Ray Shotwell, both of Alton, and two sisters, Margaret S. Ford of South Boston and Nancy Poythress of Alton.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Alton Baptist Church. Interment icon will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Brooks Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Flossie Ward

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Flossie Tuck Ward, 80, of 700 Berry Hill Road, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, at the residence.
Born Aug. 13, 1921, in Halifax County, she was a daughter of Louis Phillip Tuck and Laura Miller Tuck.
She was married to Gilbert Ward. She was a lifetime member of Scottsburg Baptist Church, where she was in the church choir.
Survivors include one daughter, Frances Mae Goswick of South Boston, and two brothers, Charnie Wesley Tuck and Louie Kye Tuck, both of Scottsburg.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Scottsburg Baptist Church with the Rev. Bob Richards officiating. Interment icon will follow at Oakland cemetery in Scottsburg.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Powell Funeral Home and other times at the residence of Bernard and Virginia Smith, 1056 McDonald Road in Scottsburg, and the residence of Louie and Thelma Tuck, 1066 Green Level Road in Scottsburg.
Powell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Lelia ‘Teenie’ Watkins

DANVILLE, Va. - Lelia H. “Teenie” Watkins, 75, formerly of 1236 Honey Road, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, at Riverside Health Care Center.
Born Feb. 14, 1926, in Danville, she was a daughter of Franklin Holt and Beulah Mills Holt.
She was married to Eli Lonnie Watkins, who predeceased her May 6, 1989. She worked at Dan River Inc. as a weaver prior to her retirement. She was a member of First Church of the Brethren, where she played piano.
Survivors include one son, Alex Watkins of the residence, and two grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her husband and parents, by one son, James W. Porter; one brother, Lakey L. Holt; and one sister, Rhumel H. Simpson.
The graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Richard Berkley officiating.
The family received friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Barker Funeral Home Inc. and other times at the residence.

Frances White

SCOTTSBURG, Va. - Frances Brown Cliborne White, 78, of 7101 Clays Mill Road, died Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, at the residence.
Born Nov. 7, 1923, in Halifax County, she was a daughter of Henry J. Cliborne and Virgie Brown Cliborne.
She was married to Wert Lee White, who survives. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of Scottsburg, include one daughter, Jenny Lee White of Richmond; one son, Ronnie Dean White of Scottsburg; one brother, Lawrence Cliborner of Charleston, S.C.; three sisters, Elizabeth C. Reaves of Greensboro, N.C., Lelia C. Byer of Georgia and Nancy C. Overstreet of South Boston; and two grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents, by one sister, Ruth Elliott, and two brothers, Melvin “Dump” Cliborne and James Cliborne.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bethel Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Tony Brooks officiating. Interment icon will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Powell Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
The family suggests memorials be made to Bethel Baptist Church.

Joan Woodson

CHATHAM, Va. - Joan Meadows Woodson, 56, of 769 N. Fairview Road, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 19, 1944, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of John Henry Meadows and Madeline Mays Meadows.
She was married to David R. Woodson, who survives. She was a member of Samuel Harris Memorial Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of the residence, include two daughters, Cindy S. Still of Cascade and Kristy R. Woodson of Chatham; three brothers, Junior L. Meadows and H. Michael Meadows, both of Chatham and Ronald W. Meadows of Danville; and four grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Samuel Harris Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Thomas Wright officiating. Interment icon will follow at Hillcrest Burial Park in Chatham.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at Scott Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
The family suggests, in lieu of flowers, that memorials be made to Samuel Harris Memorial Scholarship Fund or the Chatham rescue squad.

Ilene Carroll

SCOTTSBURG, Va. - Ilene Newbill Carroll, 78, died Dec. 13, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center.
Born March 13, 1923, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Herbert Pryor Newbill and Etta Snead Newbill.
She was married to Flaudie Bradshaw Carroll Jr. She was a member of Scottsburg Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Charlotte C. Carnes of Richmond; six sisters, Emily N. Claytor of Richmond, Florence A. Tompkins of Danville, Geneva Throckmorton of Scottsburg, Juanita Allen of South Boston, Dorothy Watkins, Harriette McGregor and Hilda McMullin, all of Richmond.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. John Eure officiating. Interment icon will follow at Oakland cemetery in Scottsburg.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Powell Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
The family suggests in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Scottsburg Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue.

Charles Coleman

DANVILLE, Va. - Charles Elexander Coleman, 61, of 745 Memorial Drive, died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 9, 1940, in Danville, he was the son of James Richard Coleman Jr. and Mable Jane Coleman.
He was married to Margie Brandon Coleman, who predeceased him. He was a brick layer for many years prior to his retirement.
Survivors include one daughter, Tara Coleman of Danville; three sisters, Carolyn Edwards, Barbara Warren and Betty Taylor, all of Danville.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Robert L. Tapper officiating. Interment icon will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Carolyn Edwards, 835A Colquohon St. in Danville.

Gladys Haymore

DANVILLE, Va. - Gladys (Cindy) Gregory Haymore of 751 Vicar Road, Danville, Va. went to be with her Lord on Wednesday evening December 12, 2001, after a very brief illness.
Mrs. Haymore was born in the Callands community of Pittsylvania County on November 26, 1914 a daughter of the late Ily S. Gregory and Mary Jane Hankins Gregory. She was raised in a very loving and Christian home. The eight brothers and sisters remained very close through the years. Mrs. Haymore was a longtime member of the Danville First Pentecostal Holiness Church and was associated with Dan River Inc. for many years.
Mrs. Haymore is survived by her younger sister Edith G. Hawkins and brother Davis Gregory Sr. and wife Eleanor all of Danville, 3 sisters in law Hazel Gregory and Virginia Gregory both of Danville and Brattie Gregory of North Wilkesboro, N.C. and by many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Posey L. Haymore, her parents, four brothers Buford Gregory, W.A. Gregory, Richard Gregory and Douglas Gregory. She lost three of her brothers and her very special sister and best friend Jessie G. Hearp since April of this year.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday December 15th at 2:00 p.m. from the Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by Pastor James Ward Jr. and Reverend Jim Gregory. Interment icon will follow in Highland Burial Park. The family received friends Friday December 14th at the Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. and will at other times be at her residence 751 Vicar Road, Danville, Virginia. Cindy will be greatly missed by all those whose life she touched. Her living example was an inspiration to all who knew and loved her.

Nadine Nichols

DANVILLE, Va. - Nadine Myers Nichols, 81, of 2526 N. Main St., died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, at Roman Eagle Memorial Nursing Home after more than 20 years of declining health and 25 years at Roman Eagle.
Born Dec. 28, 1919, in Danville, she was a daughter of Claude Swanson Myers and Mattie Sue Owens Myers.
She was married to William Lewis Nichols, who predeceased her Oct. 2, 1965. She lived all of her life in Danville, where she was a homemaker and member of Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Marie N. Addison and Mattie N. Pierce, both of Durham, N.C., and Shirley N. Wynn of Lovingston; two sons, Roy Thomas Nichols and Joseph Harvey Nichols, both of Franklinton, N.C.; one sister, Thelma M. Adkins of Danville; 19 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
The graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Freddie Vicks officiating.
Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Bertha Richardson

DANVILLE, Va. - Bertha Thomas Richardson, 70, of 1607 Westover Drive, died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 22, 1931, in Danville, she was the daughter of Beverly Barlow Sr. and Ladylove Jones Barlow.
She was married to Willie Reid Richardson Sr., who survives. She was a retired employee of Dan River Inc.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include three daughters, Jacqueline Richardson of Washington, D.C., Patricia Stephens, and Beverly Richardson, both of Danville; three sons, Willie Richardson Jr., and Christopher Lee Richardson, both of Danville, and Daryl Alexander Richarson of Greensboro, N.C.; one brother, Augusta “Sonnyboy” Thomas of Danville; and a number of grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at Union Street Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Samuel Griffith officiating. Interment icon will follow at Oak Hill cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Percy Bennett Strange

DANVILLE, Va. - Percy Bennett Strange, 80, of 1409 Oak Hill Road, Danville, Virginia, died Wednesday, December 12, 2001 at the Danville Regional Medical Center.
He was born January 24, 1921 in Pittsylvania County, a son of the late Jessie William Strange and the late Mary Tinsley Strange. He was married to Nannie Williams Strange, who survived and was a farmer and member of the Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church where he served on the Board of Deacons. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army where he received the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal.
In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by twelve sons, Percy of Washington, D.C., Calvin of Norfolk, Va., David of Axton, Va., Leon, Charlie and Richard, all of the residence, Curtis of Cascade, Va., James of Reidsville, N.C., Gordon of the residence, Michael of Martinsville, Va., Marvin of Cascade, Va., and Keith of the residence, six daughters, Dorothy Motley of Danville, Patricia Strange of the residence, Tanya Easley of Danville, Gloria Gravely and Annie Bell Dillard, both of Martinsville, Va., Bridgett Martin of Washington, D.C., two devoted grandsons who he reared as his own, Jerron Pete Morton and Andrae Strange, as well as 29 other loving and devoted grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, a loving mother-in-law, Almeda Williams, five sisters, Marion Wheeler of Washington, D.C., Gladys Wilkerson of Danville, Va., Lucille Adams and Catherine Wilson, both of Cascade, Va., Barbara Jean Clark of Silver Springs, Md., two brothers, Walter Strange and Bobby Joe Strange, both of Cascade, Va., numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by one daughter, Joyce Gravely, three brothers, Olanda Strange, David Strange, and Charlie Strange, two sisters, Dorothy Strange and Mabel Adams.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 1409 Oak Hill Road, Danville, Virginia.
Funeral services for Mr. Percy Strange will be conducted on Sunday, December 16, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. from the Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church with Dr. John W. Tinsley officiating. Interment icon with military rites by American Legion Post 29 will follow in the Strange Family cemetery. The family will receive friends on Saturday evening from 7-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements for Mr. Percy Strange.
