Harvey Willis

ERWIN, Tenn. - Harvey Willis, 80, of 880 South Mohawk Drive, died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, at Center on Aging and Health in Erwin after one year of declining health.
Born July 20, 1921, in Leesburg, N.C., he was the son of John Baptist Willis and Maude Briggs Willis.
He was married May 1, 1945, to Bertha Reynolds Willis, who predeceased him Sept. 11, 1995. He lived most of his life in the Danville, Va. area where he was employed as a superintendent for John W. Daniel and Company prior to his retirement. He was a member of Keen Street Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II.
Survivors include one son, Harvey Reynolds Willis of Johnson City; two daughters, Marcie Willis Downes of Granville, Ohio, and Candace Jill Willis of Blacksburg, Va.; four sisters, Dorothy Willis of Goldsboro, N.C., Ruby Murray of Yanceyville, N.C., Gertrude Hightower of Roxboro, N.C., and Susie Kirby of Mebane, N.C.; three brothers, John D. Willis of Yanceyville, N.C., Cleo Willis of Danville, Va., and Clyde Willis of Leesburg, N.C.; and five grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his wife and parents, by one brother, Jesse Willis.
The funeral will be held 3 p.m. Saturday at Keen Street Baptist Church with the Rev. Thomas Wright and the Rev. Thomas Brown officiating. Interment icon will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 1:30-3 p.m. Saturday at Keen Street Baptist Church.
Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Earl Adkins

SUTHERLIN, Va. - Earl Brooks Adkins Sr., 68, of 2760 Reeves Mill Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001 at his residence after one year of declining health.
Born Aug. 1, 1933, in Danville, he was a son of the late Elisha Brooks Adkins and the late Mary Lou Burgess Adkins.
He was married Oct. 9, 1953, to Hariett Ann Shriver Adkins, who survives. He had lived in the Glenwood community of Danville before moving to the Sutherlin community of Pittsylvania County. He retired from the service station business, having owned Skyview Texaco for 27 years. Prior to owning Skyview Texaco, he operated the former Ken & Earl’s Restaurant for several years and the former Airport Exxon for eight years. He attended Kentuck Baptist Church and was a member of American Legion Post 325. He served with the 101st Airborne Division of the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include one son, Earl Brooks Adkins Jr. of Sutherlin; one daughter, Debra Kay A. Vaughan of Danville; one sister, Bertha Adkins Brown of Danville; three grandchildren; and three step grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by three brothers and one sister.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. G.H. Vaughan and the Rev. A.C. Smith officiating.
Interment, with military honors by American Legion Post 325, will follow in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the residence.
The family suggests memorials be made to the Laurel Grove Fire & Rescue, P.O. Box, 26, Sutherlin, Va. 24594 or to the Kentuck Baptist Church Scholarship Fund, Kentuck Church Road, Ringgold, Va. 24586.

Randolph Chaney Sr.

RINGGOLD, Va. - Randolph Hughes Chaney Sr., 76, of 1080 Cedar Road, died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health and 10 days in the hospital.
Born Aug. 27, 1925, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Alex Carey Chaney Sr. and Sallie Parson Chaney.
He was married Aug. 30, 1947 to Estelle Hankins Chaney, who survives. He lived all of his life in the Mountain Hill community of Pittsylvania County. He worked for Dan River Inc. as a supervisor in the No. 1 Knitt of the former Riverside Division and farmed for a number of years. He later owned and operated Chaney Motors, where he dealed with used cars until his retirement. He attended the Central Boulevard Church of God and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served in the South Pacific during World War II.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include one son, Randolph Hughes Chaney Jr. of Ringgold; two daughters, Paige C. Hudson of Newport News and Kim C. Moran of Dry Fork; two brothers, Thornton W. Chaney of Ringgold and Edward W. Chaney of Jamaica; one sister, Sallie C. Lee of Ringgold; and three grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two brothers, O. Barksdale Chaney and Alex C. “Bitsy” Chaney.
The graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. John Meadows and the Rev. Billy Hedrick officiating. Interment icon will follow with military honors performed by American Legion Post 1097.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and other times at the residence in the Mountain Hill community.

Irene Foster

DANVILLE, Va. - Irene Divens Foster, 71, of 301 Harraway Road, died Monday, Dec. 24, 2001 at her residence.
Born Jan. 9, 1930 in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of the late James Luster Divens Sr. and the late Sallie Lee Law Divens. She was married to Luther Foster, who also predeceased her.
Survivors include one daughter, Irene M. Jones of Danville; one sister, Maggie Blackmon of Cascade; two brothers, Edward Lee Divens and James Luther Divens Jr., both of Cascade; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Vance Street Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Herbert Dickerson officiating. Interment icon will follow in the Highland Burial Park cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements.

Evelyn Hall

DANVILLE, Va. - Hattie Evelyn Walker Hall, 89, of 127 Franklin Court, died on December 23, 2001, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home after two months of declining health and three years at Roman Eagle.
Born June 1, 1912, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of the late William Henry Walker and the late Lucy Maude Adams Walker.
She was married in August of 1942 to the late Linwood Marshall Hall, who died on December 25, 1990. Mrs. Hall had lived most of her life in the Blairs Community of Pittsylvania County prior to moving to Danville. She had worked for the former Health Tex Corporation as a seamstress until her retirement. Mrs. Hall was of the Primitive Baptist Faith. She was a member of the Young at Heart Retirees at HealthTex as long as her health permitted.
Survivors include Son Kenneth Marshall Hall of Sutherlin, Va.; Sisters Mildred W. Thomas of Danville, Va., Ada W. Pleasant of Purley, N.C., and Mabel W. Paschal of Ruffin, N.C.; She is survived by 4 Grandchildren Patty Hall, Mark Hall, Joey Hall & Dianna Seamster. She is survived by 5 Great Grandchildren.
She was predeceased by 4 Brothers James Walker, Willie Walker, Turner Walker & Jeff Walker. She was predeceased by 1 Sister Ellen Brumfield.
The funeral will be held Thursday, December 27th at 2:00 p.m. from the Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Reverend Hylton Lawrence. Interment icon will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends Wednesday night from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at the Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel.

Gary Jones

BROSVILLE, Va. - Gary Don Jones, 30, died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 19, 1971, in Florence, Ariz., he was a son of Bobby Jones and Carolyn Hand Moore, who survive.
He was of the Protestant faith and spent most of his life in Arizona. He had been a resident of Danville for the past five years.
Survivors, in addition to his parents of Brosville, include two brothers, John Jones, stationed in Norfolk with the U.S. Navy, and Michael Jones of Brosville; and one sister, Anita Moore of Apache Junction, Ariz.
The graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Cecil Coates officiating.
Te family will be at the residence, 5265 Whispering Pines Road in Brosville.
Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Grace Keesee

DANVILLE, Va. - Grace Bane Keesee, 94, of 141 Pineview Drive, died Monday, Dec. 24, 2001, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home, where she had resided for two years.
Born Aug. 9, 1907, in Danville, she was a daughter of Samuel O. Bane and Catherine Evans Bane.
She was married to Troy R. Keesee, who predeceased her in 1980. She was retired from Belk Leggett, where she was a member of the Belk Leggett Retirement Club. She was a member of Moffett Memorial Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Women’s Missionary Union and Primetimers of Moffett.
Survivors include one son, Phil Keesee of Danville; two sisters, Nellie Moore of Danville and Ruby Thomas of Dry Fork; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her husband and parents, by one son, James Clyde Bowes; two brothers, Floyd “Beenie” Bane and Otis Bane; and one sister, Margaret Wells.
The graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Steve Carlton officiating.
The family will be at the residence.
The family suggests memorials be made to Moffett Memorial Baptist Church or a charity of choice.
Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Evelyn Ragland

DANVILLE, Va. - Evelyn Goodman Ragland, 83, of 138 Oakwood Circle, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001 at the Danville Regional Medical Center after a decline in health.
Born Dec. 25, 1918, she was a daughter of William Charles Goodman and Emma Glidewell Goodman.
She was married to Robert Flynn Ragland, who died Feb. 17, 1987. She lived 20 years in the greater New York and New Jersey metropolitan area before returning to Danville in 1975.
Survivors include son Russell G. Ragland of San Diego and brother B.C. Goodman of Annandale.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Jonathan Bennett officiating. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 4-5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Townes Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Rufus Stone Jr.

BASSETT, Va. - Rufus Daniel Stone Jr., 66, of 335 Hall Harbour Road, Bassett, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001 at his residence.
He was the husband of Marie Bateman Stone of the residence and the father of Cindi Stone Hines of Brosville.
Funeral arrangements will by announced by Norris Funeral Services and Crematory in Martinsville.

Helen Taylor

DANVILLE, Va. - Helen Fitz Taylor, 68, of 228 Robertson Ave., died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 10, 1933, in Charlotte County, she was a daughter of Dave Fitz and Daisy Jones Fitz.
She was married to Russell Horne Taylor, who died July 29, 1995. She had worked for a number of years at Harris Teeter before retiring in 1995. She was a member of the Public Fork Christian Church in Red Oak, and attended Bethany Presbyterian Church in Danville.
Survivors include three brothers, G. Hagood Fitz and Henry R. Fitz of Red Oak and Robert H. Fitz of South Boston, and two sisters, Patty F. Duffer of Red Oak and Lena F. Parsons of Lynchburg.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Elbert Williamson officiating. Interment icon will follow in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Townes Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
