Eva Nowlin Landrum

DANVILLE, Va. - Eva Nowlin Landrum, 81, of 229 Ingram Road, died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2002, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home where she had resided for four years. She had been in declining in health for six years.

Born July 11, 1921, in the former Spray Community of Eden, N.C., she was the daughter of E.A. Nowlin and Ella Bowers Nowlin.

She lived most of her life in Danville and retired in 1983 from Dan River, Inc. where she worked in the 4-A weave room for 25 years. She was of the Baptist faith.

She is survived by one daughter, Diane L. Mangus of Danville; one son, Willis Landrum Jr. of Sandy Level; three sisters, Peggy N. Adkins of Baltimore, Md., Mary N. West of Spartanburg, S.C. and Patsy N. Lowery of Danville; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was predeceased by one brother, Jack Nowlin and one sister, Ruby N. Adkins.

The family will receive friends 4-6 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and at other times at the residence.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to Central and Western Virginia Chapter of Alzheimer's Association, P.O. Box 310, Harrisonburg, VA 22803.

Robert Kevin Powell

DANVILLE, Va. - Robert Kevin Powell, 48, of 203 Westview Drive, died Thursday, August 29, 2002 at 7:09 a.m. at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born in Galax on August 12, 1954, he was the son of Dallas Eugene Powell, who predeceased him and Eva Sue Morris Powell, who survives.

He was a self-employed carpenter.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by two daughters, Crystal Powell and Brandy Powell; one granddaughter, Cayla Powell; and one grandson, Thomas Barker, all of Danville.

He was predeceased by one brother, Richard Eugene Powell.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with The Rev. Stephen White officiating. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel and at other times at the residence, 203 Westview Drive.

Barker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Garland Lee Samuels Jr.

DANVILLE, Va. - Garland Lee Samuels Jr., 52, of 1216 Afton Road, died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center after three months of declining health.

Born March 25, 1950, in Clumberland, Wis., he was the son of Garland Lee Samuels Sr. and Gertrude Carlson Samuels.

He married Debbie Walker Samuels on May 24, 1980. He lived most of his life in the Danville and Pittsylvania County areas where prior to his decline in health, he was General Manager for Dan Valley Wholesale Florist. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and the Army National Guard and was a member of the V.F.W. Ballard Pruitt Post 647. He was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by two sons, Shawn D'Wayne Samuels and Nicholas Paul Samuels, both of the residence; one daughter, Brittany Megan Samuels, also of the residence; two sisters, JoAnn Davis of Dry Fork and Judith Lee Samuels of Danville; two brothers, Randy Samuels of Axton and Tommy Samuels of Ringgold; and two stepsisters, Teressa Barbour and Karen Agee, both of Ringgold.

The graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. H. Dale Proctor officiating and military honors by American Legion Post 1097. Interment will follow.

The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and at other times at the residence.

Barbara Farmer Saunders

NATHALIE, Va. - Barbara Farmer Saunders, 60, of 5164 Chestnut Road, died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2002, at Virginia Baptist Hospital.

Born Oct. 25, 1941, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Lawrence Hamilton Farmer and Rebecca Glass Stanley.

She was married to Louis Edward Saunders. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Republican Grove.

In addition to her husband of Nathalie, she is survived by two daughters, Rebecca Dale Jennings and Crystal S. Trickey, both of Nathalie; one son, Randy Saunders of Forest; one sister, Iris Mitchell of Hopewell; two brothers, L.H. Farmer of Nathalie and Jeff Farmer of Halifax; and seven grandchildren.

She was predeceased by one son, Tony Saunders and two grandsons, Kevin Jennings and Shawn Jennings.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church of Republican Grove with the Rev. Shelton Miles officiating. Interment will be in the Saunders family cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Powell Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

The family suggests memorials be made to First Baptist Church of Republican Grove Building Fund.

Frank Payne Stephenson Jr.

BLAIRS, Va. - Frank Payne Stephenson Jr., 45, of 184 Howertons Bottom Road, died Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2002, at the residence.

Born May 30, 1957, in Washington, D.C., he was the son of Elizabeth Griffith Stephenson, who predeceased him and Frank P. Stephenson Sr., who survives.

In addition to his father of Lynchburg, he is survived by his wife, Linda Kokinda Stephenson of Chatham; one son, Robert Stephenson of Md.; two brothers, Craig Stephenson of Virginia Beach and William G. Stephenson of Fla.; one stepson, Allen Gross of Chatham; one step-daughter, Erin Presley of Chatham; and seven step-grandchildren.

A private memorial service will be held at Virginia Beach.

Lena Aralios

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Lena Brown Aralios, 82, of Sycamore Care and Rehabilitation Center, died Monday, May 20, 2002 at Sycamore Care and Rehabilitation Center following three years of declining health and three years in the hospital.

Born May 24, 1919, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Eugene Brown and Mary Beulah Moss Brown.

She was married in 1960 to Constantinos R. Aralios, who predeceased her Oct. 28, 1977. She was of the Baptist faith and lived her life in Pittsylvania County, Va., Centreville, Va. and Memphis for the past four years. She was retired from Sears in Manassas, Va. where she worked as an assistant manager.

Survivors include two sons, Eugene William Shreve of Charlottesville, Va.; Elton Dwayne Shreve of Memphis; one daughter, Bene S. Pritchett of Warrington, Va.; three sisters, Mae B. Collins and Junaita B. Holly, both of Danville, Va., and Adele B. Sipe of Allentown, Pa.; three brothers, Eugene G. Brown, William R. Brown, and James Herbert Brown, all of Danville, Va.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased, in addition to her husband and parents, by one brother, Samuel E. Brown and three sisters, Bessie B. Black, Virginia B. Buckner and Laura B. Cane.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel. Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mary Berry

POWHATAN, Va. - Mary Ellen Berry, 87, formerly of Danville, died Saturday, May 18, 2002, at the residence of her daughter.

Born Sept. 7, 1914, in Person County, N.C., she was the daughter of Walter M. Scott and Aniva Wells Scott.

She was married to Henry Benjamin Berry, who predeceased her in 1975. She was retired from C&P Telephone Co. where she was employed in Danville for 37 years. She was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Betty Berry of Powhatan; one son, Staley Berry of Clarendon, N.C.; two sisters, Annie S. Casstevens of Hamptonville, N.C., and Nell S. Anderson of Semora, N.C.

The graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Mountain View Cemetery with the Rev. Douglas Wilson officiating.

The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Townes Funeral Home.

Frankie Betterton

DANVILLE, Va. - Frankie Lynn Betterton, 43, of 4252 Stoney Mill Road, died Friday, May 17, 2002, on Highway 58 west of Danville in Pittsylvania County.

Born Aug. 5, 1958, in Danville, he was the son of Ocie Crawford Betterton and Mildred Pierce Betterton, who survive.

He was married Dec. 18, 1982, to Mary Katherine Hardy Betterton, who survives. He was a member of Brosville United Methodist Church where he had served as a trustee and as a member of the United Methodist Men. He lived most of his life in Pittsylvania County and worked for the Pittsylvania County Sheriff's office as a Deputy Sheriff. He was a member of Law Enforcement for Christ and was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Air Force.

Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence and parents of Chatham, include two daughters, Donna Christine Betterton of Lynchburg, and Lauren Crawford Betterton of the residence; one son, Frankie Lynn Betterton II of the residence; two sisters, Dorinda B. Gibson of Danville, and Kathryn B. Burnette of Chatham; and one grandchild.

The funeral will be held 4 p.m. Wednesday at Brosville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dave Rochford officiating. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens with honors conducted by the Virginia State Police Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and other times will be at the residence.

Edith Canada

CLOVER, Va. - Edith Crews Canada, 87, of 1155 Green Valley Road, died Monday, May 20, 2002, at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Born Dec. 14, 1914, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Burmah David Crews and Ola Puckette Crews.

She was married to Bernard F. Canada, who predeceased her. She was a retired Deputy Commissioner of Revenue for Halifax County and was a member of Mt. Laurel United Methodist Church.

Survivors include one son, B. David Canada of Petersburg; one daughter, JoAnna C. Hackworth of Moseley; two sisters, Catherine C. Parker of Bedford, and Cynthia C. Kendrick of Nathalie; two grandsons; and one stepgranddaughter.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mt. Laurel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ann Tang officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the church and other times at the residence.

Frances Holt

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Frances Waller Holt, 65, of 921 Pembroke Road, died Sunday, May 19, 2002, at Moses Cone Hospital.

Born Nov. 22, 1936, in Pittsylvania County, Va., she was the daughter of Willie T. Waller and Louise Johnson Waller.

She was married to James Kemp Holt, who predeceased her. She was a member of Faith Hill Baptist Church and was employed by Harris Teeter.

Survivors include two brothers, William D. Waller and Vernon T. Waller, both of Dry Fork, Va.

She was predeceased, in addition to her husband and parents, by one sister, Mildred Grubb.

The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Green Hill Cemetery wit the Rev. Vic Redding officiating.

The family will receive friends at the cemetery following the service.

Sylvia Lewis

DANVILLE, Va. - Sylvia Lewis, 51, of 109 Kemper Court, died suddenly Sunday, May 19, 2002, at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C. following a brief illness.

Born July 23, 1950, in Danville, she was the daughter of Eugene Clyde Lewis and Evelyn Lewis.

She was educated in the Danville Public School System and worked at the Fred T. Hatcher Center in Blairs. She was a member of North New Hope Baptist Church.

Survivors include one sister, Joyce Lewis Herbin of Reidsville, N.C.; three brothers, Andrew Lewis and Kenneth Lewis of Danville; and Robert Lee Lewis of Charlotte, N.C.

The funeral will be held 3 p.m. Thursday at North New Hope Baptist Church, 123 Old Piney Forest Road with the Rev. Willard D. Smith officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.

The viewing will be held 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Franklin New

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Franklin Monroe New, 69, of 1081 Shelton Road, died Monday, May 20, 2002, at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Born April 25, 1933, in South Boston, he was the son of James Monroe New and Mollie Cozart New.

He was married to Ina B. New, who survives. He was a supervisor at Daystrom and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of American Legion Post 8.

Survivors, in addition to his wife of South Boston, include three sons, Gary Franklin New, Kenneth Ray New, and Gerald Monroe New, all of South Boston; one sister, Rachel Dixon of South Boston; two brothers, Ronnie New of South Boston and Earl New of Norfolk; and six grandchildren.

He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by two sisters, Marion Jordan and Marie Barbery.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Rudolph Jacobs officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at Brooks Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence.

Melvin Rigney

CHATHAM, Va. - Melvin Lee Rigney, 34, of 833 Cavalry Road, died Monday, May 20, 2002.

Born Nov. 11, 1967, in Danville, he was the son of Frances R. Rigney, who survives, and Jackie Roger Rigney.

He was married to Kathy B. Rigney, who survives. He was a member of Hollywood Baptist Church.

Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence and mother of Leatherwood, include one daughter, Ambert Paige Rigney of the residence; one brother, Jackie E. Rigney of Axton; and two sisters, Angie R. Eanes of Axton and Penny Marie Rigney of Leatherwood.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Matthews Memorial Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Russell H. East III and the Rev. Charles Swanson officiating. Interment will follow at Jefferson Family Cemetery in Chatham.

The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Wednesday at Scott Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence.
