Ralph Lee Barker

ALTON, Va. - Ralph Lee Barker, 74, of 1053 Whitt Loop Road, died Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003, in Halifax Regional Hospital.

Born April 28, 1928, in Halifax County, he was the son of Claude Lee Barker and Mary Lizzie Brown Barker, who predeceased him.

He was retired from Georgia Pacific.

He was a U.S. Army veteran.

He was a member of Bethel Hill Baptist Church.

He was married to Hazel L. Barker.

In addition to his wife, of the residence, he is survived by four daughters, Patricia Barker Bradshaw of Alton, Carolyn Barker Strohm of Halifax, Janice Duffey of Clover and Wanda Lacks of Drakes Branch; five sons, Ralph Lee "Butch" Barker Jr. of Halifax, Jimmy Conner of Scottsburg, Tony Conner of Timberlake, N.C., Roger Conner of South Boston and Randy Conner of Halifax; one brother, Marvin Tracy Barker of Clover; one sister, Faye Barker Clark of South Boston; 15 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was also predeceased by a granddaughter, Bobbie Jo Wade Jackson.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bethel Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Jason Evans officiating. Interment will be at Bethel Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Brooks Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the residence.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Halifax County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 183, South Boston, VA 24592 or Bethel Hill Baptist Church.

Herbert Astor Cahill

DANVILLE, Va. - Herbert Astor Cahill, age 88, long time resident of 528 West Main Street, Danville, died Tuesday, February 4, 2003 at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born on August 23, 1914 at Irisburg, Henry County, VA, he was the son of the late Dr. William David Young Cahill and Ann Richardson Cahill.

He was married on June 17, 1950 to Elsie Gilliam Wooding, who died November 2, 1992.

He was a graduate of George Washington High School, attended V.P.I. Extension and graduated from Averett College.

A member of First Baptist Church, he was a Trustee and former Deacon and Sunday School teacher.

He served in World War II in the 99th Infantry Division, C Battery 332nd Field Artillery. He saw action in three major campaigns in the European Theatre, the Battle of Central Europe, Battle of the Bulge (Ardenne) and Battle of Ruhr Valley.

An aviation enthusiast, he held a private pilot's license until his health became impaired and was the owner of an Aeronca plane, a tail-dragger dubbed Charlie Brown.

He was also a member of the Danville Historical Society and the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History and also the Southside Pilots Association.

At the time of his retirement in 1981 he was secretary-treasurer of Cahill Manufacturing Co.

He is survived by two sons, Dr. David Wooding Cahill and wife, Sandra Green Cahill of Tampa, Florida, and Herbert Gilliam Cahill and wife, Mindy Silverman Cahill of Chesapeake, VA; also six grandchildren, Erin, Austin and Laurin of Tampa, and Allison, Rebecca and Joshua of Chesapeake, VA.

He is also survived by a sister, Mary M. Cahill of Danville, VA and a nephew, Robert Young Cahill of Penhook, also a great niece and several great nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, William Starling Cahill, a sister, Florence Henry Cahill, and a nephew, William Starling Cahill Jr.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday, February 6, 2003 at 2:00 PM from Mountain View Cemetery by Dr. Joey Faucette and Dr. Rodney Beals.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday night, February 5, 2003 at Townes Funeral Home from 7:00 - 8:30 PM and at other times will be at the residence.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Danville Life Saving Crew, 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, VA 24541 or The First Baptist Church Memorial Fund, 871 Main Street, Danville, VA 24541.

Marion Fowler Colenda

OXFORD, N.C. - Marion Fowler Colenda, 77, of 5095 Dorsey Road, died Monday, February 3, 2003.

Marion was a native of Danville, VA, daughter of the late Frank M. and Marion Osborne Fowler, widow of Joseph R. Colenda, retired from the printing department of the Oxford Orphanage (The Masonic Home For Children), a member of the Oxford United Methodist Church and a homemaker.

Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 P.M. Thursday from the Oxford United Methodist Church by the Rev. Denny Wise and the Rev. David Grissom. Burial will follow in Meadowview Memorial Park.

Surviving are her daughter, Mary Colenda Caudle of Oxford; her sons, Chris J. Colenda of Greensboro, Joseph R. Colenda Jr. of Grimesland, Robert D. Colenda of Panama City, FL, Steven B. Colenda of Oxford; her sister, Anne McDaniel of Danville, VA; her brother, Frank Fowler of Greensboro, sixteen grandchildren, five great-grandchildren.

Flowers are accepted or memorials may be made to the Joseph R. Colenda Student Fund, The Masonic Home For Children, 600 College Street, Oxford, NC 27565.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 P.M. Wednesday at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home and other times at the home.

Rickey Nelson Dix

RINGGOLD, Va. - Rickey Nelson Dix, 44, of 747 Mountain Hill Road, died Monday, Feb. 3, 2003, at his residence after six months of declining health.

Born Nov. 7, 1958, in Danville, he was a son of Willie Nelson Dix, who predeceased him and Onie Essie Wilson, who survives.

He lived most of his life in the Mountain Hill community of Pittsylvania County. He was employed for four years with B. Mack Construction Company prior to working four years in the sewing room of Dan River Mills. He was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by two sons, Stoney Nelson Roberts and Charles Christopher Roberts, both of Danville; a sister, Lisa Dix Cox of Ringgold and a brother, Donald Ray Dix of Las Vegas, Nev.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Glen Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Lee Von Eime officiating. Interment will be in the Dix Family Cemetery in the Mountain Hill community.

The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the residence. At other times they will also be at the residence.

The family suggests memorials be made to Ringgold Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department, P.O. Box 10, Ringgold, VA 24586.

Douglas B. Matze Sr.

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Douglas B. Matze Sr., 78, of 517 Greenway Drive died Monday, Feb. 3, 2003 at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Born April 20, 1924, in Wallace, N.C., he was the son of William M. Matze and Blanch Linn Matze, who predeceased him.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

As a veteran of World War II, he served in the United States Marine Corps.

He had been a member of the Masonic Fraternity Halifax Lodge #96 since May 29, 1950. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #8.

He was an active volunteer of 15 years in the Halifax County Rescue Squad, serving as Captain in 1968-1969, and was awarded Life Member status.

He was married to Florence Gravitt Matze for 54 years.

In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by one son, Douglas B. Matze Jr. of Chesterfield; one daughter, Mary Lou Taylor of South Boston; three brothers, Kenneth Matze of Richmond, Luther Matze of Suffolk and William J. Matze of Roanoke; two sisters, Margaret Lipe of Richfield, N.C. and Mary Ruth Setzer of Mooresville, N.C.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Melvin Keith Matze and Mervin Linn Matze.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Russell Lee officiating. Interment will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Brooks Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the residence.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Halifax County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 183, South Boston, VA 24592.

Edna J. Waller

DAN VILLE, Va. - Edna Johnson Waller, 86, of 864 Edmonds St., died Monday, Feb. 3, 2003 in Danville Regional Medical Center after four months of declining health.

Born Aug. 26, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Foot Johnson and Mildred Susan Stone Johnson.

She was a member of Brush Arbor Baptist Church.

She lived all of her life in Danville.

She was retired from Dan River Mills, Inc.

She was married to Harry V. Waller, who predeceased her May 19, 1997.

She is survived by one son, Clarence N. Harville of Ringgold; one stepson, Tommy L. Harville of Danville; five daughters, Elizabeth H. Day, Virgie H. George and Nancy H. Newcomb, all of Danville, Catherine H. Wellman of Leesburg, Fla. and Delilah H. Batson of Wilmington, N.C.; four sisters, Annie J. Jones, Gracie J. Herndon and Faye J. Haskins, all of Chatham and Sadie J. Dixon of Roxboro, N.C.; 17 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and three step-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Mary Ann Harville; two grandsons, Clarence Steven Harville and Randall Scott Loftis; a brother, Leonard T. Johnson and four sisters, Louise J. Waller, Virginia J. Harberson, Dorothy J. Warren and Florence Johnson.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Stephen Lamb and the Rev. Walter Yancey officiating. Interment will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel. At other times they will be at the residence of her daughter, Nancy H. Newcomb, 302 Riceland St.

John Burton

BROKEN ARROW, Okla. - John Glenn Burton, 48, died Sunday, May 12, 2002, in Tulsa.

Born Dec. 22, 1953, in Detroit, Mich., he was the son of Clifford Watson Burton, who survives, and Merreal Gaye Myers Burton.

He was married Feb. 23, 1974, to Linda Clay Burton, who survives. He lived most of his life in Danville, Va. and had been a resident of Oklahoma since 1992. He was a member of Rhema Bible Church in Broken Arrow and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He had worked as a sales representative for the Git-N-Go Corporation.

Survivors include two daughters, Melissa Whitehead, and Sandra Burton, both of Broken Arrow; one son, Joshua Burton of Broken Arrow; one brother, Ronnie Burton of Bland, Va.; and two grandchildren.

He was predeceased by one sister, Pax Baxton.

The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Revs. Neal Ison and David Blevins officiating.

Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the residence of a sister-in-law, Edna Cundiff, 2357 Moorefield Bridge Road, Danville, Va.

Mary Coleman

DANVILLE, Va. - Mary Helen Coleman, 73, of Pinecrest Adult Home, died Wednesday, May 15, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born March 4, 1929 in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Johnny Barksdale Coleman and Mary Bertha Lumpkin Coleman.

She was a member of Grace Design United Methodist Church and attended Fairview United Methodist Church where she was an active member of the Henry Hardy Sunday School Class. She lived in the Iris Lane community of Pittsylvania County and had been a resident of Pinecrest Adult Home for 12 years.

She is survived by two brothers, C. Neal Coleman and Buford W. Coleman, both of Danville.

She was predeceased, in addition to her parents, by three sisters, Bessie C. Lumpkin, Edna C. Thompson, and Janie C. Newsom, and three brothers, Frank J. Coleman, John Wesley Coleman, and Daniel Coleman.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Revs. Thomas B. Shepherd and Robert S. Whalley officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and at other times at the residence of Buford Coleman, 617 Iris Lane, Danville.

Norma Giuffrida

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Norma Sue Hudson Giuffrida, 80, of 1717 Irish Street, died Wednesday, May 15, 2002 at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Born March 2, 1922 in Halifax County, she was a daughter of Henry E. Hudson Sr. and Gracie Lowery Hudson.

She was married to Cosimo Giuffrida, who predeceased her. She was a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church and had been a medical secretary at Yale University Hospital.

She is survived by one brother, Richard Hudson of South Boston.

She was predeceased, in addition to her husband and parents, by one sister, Rose Mary Hudson, and two brothers, H. E. Hudson Jr. and Willard Hudson.

The funeral will be held 3 p.m. Saturday at Shady Grove United Methodist Church with the Rev. Don Davidson officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Brooks Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of Richard Hudson, 1309 Orleans Avenue, South Boston.

The family suggests memorials be made to Shady Grove United Methodist Church Building Fund.

John Hooker

STUART, Va. - The Honorable John D. Hooker, retired Judge for the 21st Judicial Court, died on May 15, 2002 at his home in Stuart, Virginia. He was 92 years of age. Judge Hooker was born in Stuart, Virginia on May 24, 1909, the son of the late J. Murray Hooker and Annie Dillard Hooker. He also was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Elizabeth Bailey Hooker. He is survived by his two sons, John D. Hooker, Jr. of Virginia Beach, Virginia and J. Murray Hooker, II of Midlothian, Virginia, and his grandson, Lance Crawford Hooker of Midlothian, Virginia.

Judge Hooker was a graduate of Hargrave Military Academy, the University of Richmond and the University of Virginia School of Law.

Shortly after he began his law practice in Stuart, he served as a naval intelligence officer in World War II. In addition to practicing law in Stuart, he served as Commonwealth Attorney and trial justice for Patrick County.

In 1951, he was appointed by Governor John Battle as Circuit Judge for the 21st Judicial Circuit, which at that time was composed of Patrick County, Martinsville, Henry County, Pittsylvania County and Chatham. He retired from the bench in January, 1982.

Judge Hooker was a lifelong member of Stuart Baptist Church, and a past member of the Board of Deacons.

Judge Hooker was a past member of the Board of Trustees of Hargrave Military Academy, Averett College and Patrick Henry Community College. He was a former chairman of the DuPont Scholarship Selection Committee for the University of Virginia.

Judge Hooker served as a member of the Board of Directors of R. J. Reynolds, Patrick County Memorial Hospital, Hooker Furniture Company, Johnson Carper Furniture Company and Patrick County Bank.

He was a member of the Stuart Rotary Club and was the club's first president and a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a member of Mountain Home Masonic Lodge 263, serving as a past master and member of the lodge's board of trustees. He was a lifetime honorary member of the Patrick County Jaycees.

He was an eagle scout, and he was the first Patrick County resident to be awarded the Silver Beaver Honor by the Boy Scouts of America, which is the highest scouting award. In the early 1950's, he was a member of the executive committee of Blue Ridge Council of Boy Scouts which established Camp Powhatan on Claytor Lake, which has served over one hundred thousand young scouts.

His support of the athletic teams of Patrick County High School was well known. On September 15, 1995, the Patrick County High School Football Stadium was named in his honor.

Funeral services for Judge Hooker will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at Stuart Baptist Church with Rev. Dick Hensley and Rev. Jim Churchwell officiating. Burial will follow in Patrick Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart. If desired, memorials may be made to Stuart Baptist Church, P.O. Box 472, Stuart, Virginia 24171.
