Janie Raines

DANVILLE, Va. - Janie Dodd Raines, 90, of 3960 Mount Cross Road, Danville, VA, died Sunday, May 5, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born December 24, 1911, in Pittsylvania County, VA, she was the daughter of Jones Dodd & Lillie Blair Dodd, both deceased.

She was married to Cephas H. Raines, who died in 1975. Mrs. Raines lived most of her life in the Mt. Cross community and was a member of Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church. She retired from Dan River Mills. She had been in declining health since December of last year.

Survivors include 3 sisters, Arlene Dodd Mills of Dry Fork, VA, Frances Dodd Raines of Danville, VA, and Battie Walton of Sandy Hook, VA; special friend, Florence Holley of Dry Fork, VA; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by 2 sisters, Anna Raines and Clara Collins; and 4 brothers, Paul Dodd, Reginald Dodd, Bobby Dodd, and Silas Dodd.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, 2002, at Danville Memorial Gardens Mausoleum by the Rev. Wayne Crews. Burial will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, May 7, 2002 from 7-8:30 p.m. at Swicegood Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church, Mt. Cross Road, Danville, VA Phone 799-8789 or Mt. Cross Volunteer Fire Department.

Harry Russell

DANVILLE, Va. - Harry Vincent Russell, 48, of 130 Midland Street, died suddenly on Sunday, May 5, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born January 2, 1954, in Danville, he was a son of Harry J. Russell, who predeceased him, and Louellen Roberston Russell, of the residence, who survives.

He was a member of White Rock Missionary Baptist Church and was employed for 11 years as a custodian at Schoolfield Elementary School.

He is survived by one sister, Brenda R. Farmer of Danville.

The funeral will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday at White Rock Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Walter Tinsley officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Alma Stanley

DANVILLE, Va. - Alma Watlington Stanley, 83, of 242 Jeanette Drive, died Sunday, May 5, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born July 24, 1918, in Danville, she was the daughter of Elijah Lawrence Watlington and Rosa Smart Watlington.

She was married August 1936, to Clarence W. Stanley, who predeceased her Jan. 5, 2000. She lived most of her life in the Schoolfield community and had been employed at Dan River Mills for 15 years and was also a homemaker. She was a charter member of Holland Road Baptist Church. She had been in declining health for the past year and had been in the hospital for one week.

Survivors include one daughter, Carolyn Stanley McGuire of Blairs; two sons, Phillip K. Stanley of Danville, and Tommy W. Stanley of Ringgold; one brother, Elijah "Larry" Watlington Jr. of Danville; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased in addition to her parents and husband, by two brothers, Harry Watlington and Burnace Watlington.

The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Lee Harris officiating.

The family received friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home and will receive friends at other times at the residence.

The family suggests memorials may be made to the Building Fund c/o Hocutt Memorial Baptist Church, P.O. Box 339, Clayton, N.C., 27520.

Lois Stierwalt

NORFOLK, Va. - Lois Mae Stierwalt of 8529 Millard Street, died May 5, 2002 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Born in Danville, she was the daughter of William M. Campbell and Mabel New Campbell.

She was married on December 10, 1949, to Irvin Lee "Bob" Stierwalt, of the residence, who survives. She lived in Sanford, Fla., before moving in 1963 to Norfolk. She was a homemaker and member of Ocean View Assembly of God Church.

Survivors include two sons, Michael Allen Stierwalt of Norfolk and Irvin Lee "J.R." Stierwalt Jr. of Kannapolis, N.C.; one daughter, Patty Stierwalt Hodges of Mocksville, N.C.; three sisters, Dorothy C. Dickerson of Virginia Beach, Gloria C. White of Fitchburg, Mass., and Rachel C. Emerson of Dry Fork; two brothers, Lester Otis Campbell of Danville and William Ray Campbell of Blairs; and four grandchildren.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Richard Andrew Campbell and Walter Douglas Campbell.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Wendell Hodges officiating. Interment will follow at Schoolfield Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and at other times at the residence of her sister Rachel C. Emerson, 548 Tobacco Road, Dry Fork.

The family suggests memorials may be made to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice House, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27103.

John William "Bill" Davis

ROANOKE, Va. - John William "Bill" Davis, 97, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, June 12, 2002 in Roanoke.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church of Roanoke.

Oakey's Roanoke Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Joseph Easley

NATHALIE, Va. - Joseph Wallace Easley, 73, of Nathalie, died Sunday, June 9, 2002 at Grand Strand Medical Center in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Born May 18, 1929 in Halifax County, he was a son of Estelle Dawson and Johnnie Easley.

He is survived by one brother, the Rev. Silas Easley of Nathalie.

The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Banister Hill CME Church with the Rev. Francis Coates officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

A viewing will be held one hour prior to the service. The family will receive friends at the residence of Ruby Easley Chism, 1013 Trinity Trail in Halifax.

Professional services are entrusted to Crawford, Garrett and Burton Funeral Services Inc.

Ruth Fowler

DANVILLE, Va. - Ruth Adams Fowler, 75, of 53 Garland St., died Thursday, June 13, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center. She had been in declining health for two years.

Born Aug. 17, 1926 in Danville, she was a daughter of Robert William Adams and Gertie Hardy Adams.

She was retired from the time-keeping office at Dan River Inc. after 40 years. She attended Arlington Baptist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Cheryl F. Williamson of Danville; one son, Robert "Bob" William Fowler of the residence; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by two brothers and one sister.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Townes Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Samuel Greeson officiating. Interment will follow at Schoolfield Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Townes Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Donald Harris

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - Donald Franklin Harris, 71, of 754 SE Hidden River Dr. died Tuesday, June 11, 2002 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Born in Springfield, Ohio, he was the son of LeRoy Harris and Dossie Harris.

He was married November 4, 2001 to Nancyann Harris, who survives. In 1954 he was honorably discharged from the U.S. Marine Corps and was awarded a senatorial commission by the Republican Senatorial Inner Circle in 1991. He was awarded the Humanitarian Award in Danville in 1985, the Restaurant Man of the Year award in Tennessee in 1968, and named to the Shoney's Founders Hall of Fame Award in 1983. He was the president and founder of the Danville Chapter of the March of Dimes from 1977-92 and was owner and president of the MFM Restaurant Group.

Survivors include one daughter, Pamela Harris McCauley of Danville; one son, Phillip Taylor Harris of Danville; two sisters, Rose Hancock and Mary Lodge, both of Matoaca, Va.; and three grandchildren.

The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Fort Pierce.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, June 20, 2002 at Townes Funeral Home in Danville, Va.

The viewing will be held 6 p.m.-8 p.m. Friday at Haisley-Hobbs Funeral Home in Fort Pierce.

Haisley Hobbs is in charge of arrangements.

Gegertha Hughes

DANVILLE, Va. - Gegertha F. Hughes, 76, of 352 Barrett St., died Tuesday, June 11, 2002 at the Roman Eagle Nursing Home.

Born September 22, 1925 in Winston-Salem, N.C., she was the daughter of Robert Faulkner and Rosa Miller.

She was married to Ulyess Hughes, who survives. She was employed by the Dibrell Brothers Tobacco Company.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include one son, Foster Williams of Danville; one daughter, Andra Hamlett of Danville; one sister, Undra Woods of Richmond; two brothers, Lloyd Faulkner of Temple Hills, Md. and Leon Faulkner of Washington D.C.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with Bishop Major Hairston officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Gaynell Ingram

DANVILLE, Va. - Frances Gaynell Ingram, 71, of 205 Hamilton St., died Tuesday, June 11, 2002 at her residence.

Born March 21, 1931 in Caswell County, N.C., she was a daughter of Harry Lee Ingram and Millie Belle Brandon Ingram.

She worked at Dan River Mills Inc. prior to retirement and was a member of Smith Chapel Baptist Church.

Survivors include three daughters, Phyllis Wooten of Stanleytown, Sharon I. Bailey of Milton, N.C. and Polly Foust of Danville; one son, Rickey L. Ingram of Danville; two sisters, Sallie Belle Loney of Danville and Dorothy I. Thornton of Jersey City, N.J.; and several grandchildren.

The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Smith Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Nathan Scovens officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Louise Giles Lewis

DANVILLE, Va. - Louise Giles Lewis, 83, of 146 Bernard Court, died at 5:05 a.m. Thursday, June 13, 2002 at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.

Born November 18, 1918 in Pittsylvania County, Va., she was a daughter of James Isaac Giles and Annie Hutcheson Giles, who both predeceased her.

She was married February 24, 1937 to Charles W. Lewis, who survives. She was a member of Oakland United Methodist Church and was a homemaker.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include two daughters, Anne Giles of Danville and Alice Shelton of Chatham; three sisters, Janie Robertson and Evelyn Jones, both of Danville and Kitty McGregor of Blairs; three grandchildren, Susan Turner of Columbia, S.C., Sarah Shelton of Richmond and Lewis Giles of Ringgold; and one great-granddaughter, Ashley Turner of Columbia, S.C.

She was predeceased, in addition to her parents, by three brothers, David Giles, Vernie Giles, Clyde Giles, and two sisters, Callie Brumfield and Garland Merricks.

The funeral will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 15, 2002 at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Steve Lewis officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park in Danville.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, June 14, 2002 at Barker Funeral Home Chapel and at other times at the residence, 146 Bernard Court.

Kenneth Miles

DANVILLE, Va. - Kenneth Gene Miles, 66, of 166 Applewood Drive, died Wednesday, June 12, 2002 at the residence.

Born August 26, 1935, he was a son of John W. Miles and Carrie Dillon Miles.

He lived most of his life in Danville and was of the Baptist faith. He was a disabled veteran of the U.S. Air Force and served during the Korean Conflict. He died unexpectedly.

He is survived by one sister, Geraldean Rae Milam of the residence.

He was predeceased by two brothers, William D. Miles and Asa L. Miles, and one sister Whealer M. Elliott.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Harry Lee Vernon

DANVILLE, Va. - Harry Lee Vernon, 72, of 234 Eastwood Drive, died Thursday, June 13, 2002 at his residence. He had been in declining health since March.

Born December 15, 1929 in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of John Benjamin Vernon and Annie Belle Clark Vernon, who both predeceased him.

He was married September 3, 1955 to Lula Reynolds Vernon, who survives. Mr. Vernon lived his life in the Danville and Pittsylvania County areas where he was the former owner and operator of Glenwood Plumbing Company for many years and continued to do plumbing work on his own after retirement. He was an active member of Central Boulevard Church of God where he served on the usher committee and was a member of the choir.

Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include one daughter, Karen D. Vernon of Danville; one son, C. Michael Vernon of Danville; three sisters, Myrtle Vernon Chattin, Ruby Lenora Vernon Campbell and Nancy Vernon Wall, all of Danville; two brothers, John Edmund Vernon Sr. of Keeling and Kenneth Ray Vernon of Marietta, Ga.; and two grandsons, Joshua M. Vernon and Jonathan L. Vernon, both of Danville.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, June 15, 2002 at Central Boulevard Church of God with the Revs. John Meadows and Herschel Stone officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, June 14, 2002 at Central Boulevard Church of God and at other times at the residence.
