Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Mary Ward

CHATHAM, Va. - Mary Rutledge Clement Ward, 62, of 235 Whittle St., died June 12, 2002 at her residence.

Born June 7, 1940 in Danville, she was the daughter of Henry Turner Clement and Patsy Jane Whitehead Clement.

She attended Chatham Presbyterian Church and was a graduate of Chatham Hall.

She received a bachelor's degree at Randolph Macon Women's College and a master's degree in education at Lynchburg College.

She taught in the Lynchburg City School District and New Lond Academy and worked as Supervisor of Special Education for the Pittsylvania County School District for 16 years. She retired from the education profession after 36 years.

She is survived by one son, Henry Carter Ward of Chatham.

She was predeceased by one brother, Henry Turner Clement Jr.

A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Chatham Burial Park with the Rev. Walker Pettyjohn officiating.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to Chatham Rescue Squad, the American Cancer Society or Pittsylvania County Special Education Advisory Committee.

William Adkins Jr.

DANVILLE, Va. - William Roy Adkins Jr., 69, of 1009 Vandola Church Road, died Sunday, April 21, 2002, at Duke Medical Center in Durham, N.C., following 11 1/2 years of declining health and seven weeks in the hospital.

Born Jan. 4, 1933, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Roy Adkins and Kate Oakes Adkins.

He was married June 6, 1953, to Janie Bowles Adkins, who survives. He had lived his entre life in Pittsylvania County and was retired from Dan River Mills where he had worked for over 33 years. He was a member of the Vandola Baptist Church where he had served on the Board of Deacons, chairman of the Board of Deacons, and former Sunday school director. He was a member of the National Rifle Association. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean Conflict.

Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include two sons, William Keith Adkins of Burlington, N.C., and David Lee Adkins of Cascade; three daughters, Gail Adkins Ferrell, and Sandra Adkins Warrick, both of Danville, and Brenda Adkins Lewis of Prattviille, Ala.; two brothers, Velma Samuel Adkins of Eden, N.C., and John Ray Adkins of Stafford County; three sisters, Mary A. Bartholomew of Danville, Vanell A. McFall of Atlanta, Ga., and June A. Fetters of Martinsville; 16 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by one daughter, Deborah Kaye Adkins.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Vandola Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. J. Leroy Clack and the Rev. Rick Lancaster officiating. Interment will follow at County Line Christian Church cemetery with military honors by American Legion Post 1097.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and other times will be at the residence.

The family suggests memorials may be made to Vandola Baptist Church Memorial Fund, 1950 Vandola Church Road, Danville, Va. 24541 or Danville Life Saving Crew, 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, Va. 24541.

Janie Barker

SEMORA, N.C. - Janie Talley Barker, 85, of Semora, died Saturday, April 20, 2002 in the Person Memorial Hospital in Roxboro.

Born in Halifax County, Va., she was a daughter of E.E. Talley and Thirza Wilkerson Talley.

She was married to Willie Greenwood Barker, who predeceased her.

Survivors include two sons, W. G. "Bill" Barker of Danville, Va. and Maurice Barker of Milton; one brother, Claude Talley of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by one son, Cecil Barker Sr.

The graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Person Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Jeanne Neal officiating. Pallbearers will be Tim Cobb, Harold Blackard, David Barker, Bryce Barker, Dan Barker, and Danny Crumpton.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at the home of a granddaughter, Jennifer Barker Cox, 8141 Ridgeville Road, Leasburg.

The family suggests memorials be made to the Semora United Methodist Church, 12683 N.C. Highway 119 North, Semora, N.C. 27343.

Annie Brockman

DANVILLE, Va. - Annie Caroline Brockman, of 115 Manchester Ave., died Saturday, April 20, 2002, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.

Born May 13, 1918, in Danville, she was the daughter of Richard S. Brockman and Myrene McKinney Brockman.

She was a graduate of George Washington High School and retired after a number of years with Giles-Flowerland. She was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany.

Survivors include two nieces, Lillian A. Hicks of Manassas, and Eleanor G. McIntosh of Springfield.

She was predeceased by one sister, Eleanor B. Griffin.

The graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Highland Burial Park with Father James Mathieson officiating.

Melvin Duncan

DANVILLE, Va. - Melvin Jackson Duncan of 2541 Stony Mill School Road, died Sunday, April 21, 2002, at Riverside Health Care Center.

Born in the Bachelors Hall community of Pittsylvania County, he was the son of James Leonard Duncan and Mary Kirks Duncan.

He was married to Ruth Towler Duncan, who survives. He lived most of his life in Brosville and had been in declining health for two years with Parkinson's Disease and had been at Riverside Health Care for one week. He was of the Holiness faith and played guitar in various churches, and did volunteer work.

Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include one daughter, Judy G. Gibbs of Pelham, N.C.; three sons, Melvin Douglas Duncan of Danville, Steve Allen Duncan of the residence, and Ronnie Neal Duncan of Danville; two brothers, Donald Duncan of Danville, and Walter Duncan of Richmond; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and one stepgreat-grandchild.

He was predeceased by four brothers, Curtis, Edward, Harrison and Richard Duncan.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Swicegood Chapel with the Rev. Jack Coe and the Rev. Ira Yeatts officiating. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence.

Linda Farrell

DANVILLE, Va. - Linda Lee Jones Caywood Farrell, 55, of 129 Campbell Street, died Thursday, April 18, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born November 11, 1946 in Danville, she was a daughter of Raymond Jones, who predeceased her, and Mildred Fallen Jones, who survives.

She was married June 11, 1988 to Charles Farrell, who survives. She taught English at Hargrave Military Academy and was also a drama instructor. She spent several years teaching at Piedmont Community College. She was a member of the National Education Association. She was a member of the Phi-Theta Kappa Sorority. She was an avid reader and had a poetic spirit. "Do not go gently into that good night, rage, rage against the dying of the light." This exemplifies her zest for life. She was to have received the "Teacher of the Year" award on Saturday, April 20, 2002.

Survivors, in addition to her mother of Danville and husband, include two sons, John Henderson Jr. and Charles A. Farrell, both of Danville; two daughters, Laura Lee Haley of Danville and Cathy Nenninger of Penn.; two sisters, Betty Jean White of Danville and Faith Marie Jones-Brown of Reidsville, N.C.; and seven grandchildren.

She was predeceased, in addition to her father, by one brother, Raymond Jones Jr.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Rayd Forder officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park.

The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Barker Funeral Home and at other times at 413 Jeannette Drive, Danville.

Eddie Gunnell

DANVILLE, Va. - Eddie Lee Gunnell, 79, of 1460 Blair Loop Road, died Saturday, April 20, 2002 at Piney Forest Health Care Center.

Born Oct. 4, 1922 in Georgia, he was a son of James Gunnell and Eliza Kidd Gunnell.

He was married to Nannie Martin Gunnell, who survives. He lived in Danville for most of his life and worked for Dan River Mills #5 Finish Room for 38 years until retiring. He was a U.S. Army veteran and had been in the nursing home since 1999. He was a member of Westover Baptist Church.

He was predeceased by three sisters and three brothers.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Doug Barber officiating. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family received friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Swicegood Funeral Home. and at other times at the residence.

Kathryn Hicks

DANVILLE, Va. - Kathryn Oakes Hicks, 73, of 219 Swanson Ave., died Sunday afternoon, April 21, 2002, at the residence following several years of declining health.

Born March 5, 1929, in Chatham, she was the daugther of Major D. Oakes and Mary Crowder Oakes.

She was married Sept. 25, 1949, to John D. Hicks Jr., who survives. She was a homemaker and lived most of her life in Danville. She was a member of Mt. Hermon Baptist Church.

Survivors, in addition to her husband of the residence, include one daughter, Patricia Kay Hicks St. John of Danville; one son, Aubrey Patrick Hicks of Danville; two sisters, Onie Farthing of Danville, and Mary Mullins of Martinsville; two brothers, John Oakes of Danville, and Billy Oakes of Sutherlin; three stepgrandchildren; and five stepgreat-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Jordan Oakes and Richard Oakes.

The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Don Davidson and the Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

Jerline Jones

DANVILLE, Va. - Jerline Hopkins Jones, 77, formerly of Elizabeth Street Extension, died Saturday, April 20, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center, following a decline in health and having resided at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.

Born Aug. 31, 1924, in Schoolfield, she was the daughter of Jesse D. "J.D." Hopkins and Martha Ida Dalton Hopkins.

She was married to Thurman Jones, who predeceased her Sept. 10, 1995. She was a member of Afton Road Primitive Baptist Church and had worked as a weaver at Dan River Inc. prior to her retirement after 36 years of service.

Survivors include two sons, Dennis T. Jones of Danville, and Don A. Jones of Pelham, N.C.; one daughter, Debby J. Meadows of Blairs; three sisters, Virginia H. Jefferson of Danville, Irene H. Austin of Danville, and Juanita H. Clifton of High Point, N.C.; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by one son, Darroll K. Jones.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Townes Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with the Elder Danny Parker officiating. Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Monday at Townes Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence of Dennis Jones, 250 Crestwood Drive.

Mark Shelton

DANVILLE, Va. - Mark Anthony Shelton, 36, of 100 Wendell Court, died Friday evening, April 19, 2002, at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro, N.C., following several months of declining health.

Born Aug. 1, 1965, in Danville, he was the son of James "Jimmy" Lester Shelton and Linda Hall Shelton, who survive.

He worked as a construction worker and plumber before his decline in health. He was a member of Laurel Grove Baptist Church and had resided in Greensboro, N.C. for the past three years. He grew up in Danville and enjoyed speedskating and roller hockey at the old Park View Skating Rink and Skatetown.

Survivors, in addition to his parents of the residence, include one daughter, Brittany Danielle Shelton of Ringgold; one sister, Tammy Shelton Chaney of Danville; maternal grandparents, Kathleen Quick of Danville, and Wallace B. Hall of West Palm Beach, Fla.; and paternal grandmother, Ethel Elizabeth Shelton of Danville.

The memorial service will be held 7 p.m. Wednesday at Rivermont Baptist Church with the Rev. Jack Waddell officiating.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Robert Throckmorton

HALIFAX, Va. - Robert Kenneth Throckmorton, 72, of 2234 Love Shop Road, died April 20, 2002, at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Born Dec. 31, 1929, in Halifax County, he was the son of Claude Thomas Throckmorton and Annie Burton Throckmorton.

He was married to Lillie Conner Throckmorton, who survives. He was a member of the Scottsburg Baptist Church, American Legion Post 8, and VFW Post 8243. He served in the armed forces during the Korean Conflict and received three Purple Hearts.

Survivors, in addition to his wife of Halifax, include one daughter, Donna Marie Throckmorton of Halifax; two sisters, Dorothy T. Ellington of South Boston, and Marion T. Satterfield of Scottsburg; three brothers, Claude Thomas Throckmorton Jr. of Cluster Springs, Earl R. Throckmorton, and Jimmie H. Throckmorton, both of Scottsburg.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Powell Funeral Home with the Rev. Rudolph Jacobs officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery with military rites.

Jessie Elmer Stone

CHATHAM, Va. - Jessie Elmer Stone, 66, of 2239 East Chase Street, Baltimore, Md., formerly of Chatham, died Sunday, July 21, 2002, at his residence.

Born May 15, 1936, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Harvey Green Stone and Elsie Thelma Bradley Stone.

He was married to Ardelia Stone. He was a retired nursing assistant at the Presbyterian Home of the Elderly in Baltimore, Md., and a member of the Greater Triumph Missionary Baptist Church in Chatham.

Survivors include his wife of Hoboken, N.J.; one son, Jessie Stone of Baltimore, Md.; two daughters, Joann Williams of Yanceyville, N.C. and Kay Arnetta Willis of Bellville, N.J.; two brothers, Harvey Stone Jr. of Baltimore, Md., and Willie Stone of Danville; one sister, Ora Jean Coles of Sterling; three granddaughters; and two grandsons.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by one brother, Clevester Stone; and a sister, Thelma Miller.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Bellgrove Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery with Elder Sylvester Edmonds officiating.

The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Friday at Miller Funeral Home.
