Cathy Huff Barrett

NORFOLK, Va. - Cathy Huff Barrett, 44, formerly of Norfolk, died Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2002 at Walter Reed Hospital in Gloucester.

Born April 7, 1958, in Danville, she was the daughter of John H. Huff, who predeceased her and Arlene Barbour Huff, who survives.

She was born in Danville and lived most of her life in Virginia Beach. She was of the Methodist faith.

She was married to Fred Vincent Barrett, who predeceased her.

In addition to her mother of Danville, she is survived by two sons, John V. Barrett of Chesapeake and Ronnie Barrett of Elizabeth City; a sister, Edie Lambert of Raleigh, N.C.; and one granddaughter.

The graveside funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hines Family Cemetery in Swansonville.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home in Danville and at other times at the residence of her mother, 114 Conway Court, Danville.

Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Virginia Sexton Cox

PROVIDENCE, N.C. - Virginia Sexton Cox, of 356 East Street, died Friday, Oct. 25, 2002.

Born March 31, 1940, in Wise County, she was the daughter of Henry Sexton and Maggie Lawson Sexton.

She was a retired nurse and retired owner of Cox Home for the Elderly. She was a member of Full Gospel Fellowship Church.

She was married to Kenneth Wayne Cox.

In addition to her husband of the residence, she is survived by four daughters, Gwendolyn Pleasants of Providence, Carol Varner of Ruffin, Deborah Howard of Berea, Ky. and Ashley Goble of Yanceyville; a son, Jack McCoy of Vansant; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Roger Ewing officiating. Interment will be in Schoolfield Cemetery.

The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Townes Funeral Home and at other times will be at the residence.

Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Robert Wayne Grasty Sr.

DANVILLE, Va. - Robert Wayne Grasty Sr., 58, of 824 Valley St., died Thursday, Oct. 24, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born May 5, 1944, in Pelham, N.C., he was the son of Charlie and Willie Ann Grasty.

He was married to Susie Grasty.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Robert Wayne Grasty Jr. of Sutherlin; five daughters, Lesia Banks of Fort Washington, Md., Deborah Banks of Alexandria, Sharon Banks of Stone Mountain, Ga., Margaret Banks of Danville and Keisha Mitchell of New York City; three sisters, Louise Motley of Pelham, N.C., Christine Grasty of Wilmington, Del. and Clara Jeffries of Danville; and three brothers, Willie Grasty of Danville, Edmond Grasty of Leesville, La. and Charlie Grasty of Akin, S.C.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jerome Morris Sr. officiating. Interment will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Clinton Lewis Gregory

DANVILLE, Va. - Clinton Lewis Gregory, 86, formerly of 112 Westview Place, died Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002, at Riverside Health Care Center.

Born Dec. 16, 1915, in Henry County, he was the son of Russell Gregory and Geneva Wyatt Gregory.

He was a member of County Line Christian Church and was a retired carpenter.

He was married to Dorothy Austin Gregory, who predeceased him.

He is survived by two sons, Kenneth Gregory and Russell Gregory, both of Danville; two sisters, Helen Scarce of Clarksville and Verna Reynolds of Danville; two brothers, Hassell Gregory of Callands and Wesley Gregory of Axton; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by three brothers, Douglas Gregory, Herman Gregory and Raymond Gregory; and a sister, Dorothy Reynolds.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at County Line Christian Church with the Rev. Dean Ashby and the Rev. J.D. Hunt officiating. Interment will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at County Line Christian Church and at other times will be at the residence of his son, Kenneth Gregory, 116 Westview Place.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to County Line Christian Church Building Fund, 12711 Chatham Road, Axton, VA 24054.

Don Clifford Jones

DRY FORK, Va. - Don Clifford Jones, 69, of 3380 Sandy Creek Road, died Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002, at Duke Medical Center in Durham, N.C. after five months of declining health and more than three weeks in the hospital.

Born July 10, 1933, in Poplar Bluff, Mo., he was the son of Willard Thomas Jones and Gertrude Raley Jones.

He moved to the Dry Fork Community of Pittsylvania County in 1978. He retired from the U.S. Navy with the rank Chief Petty Officer after 21 years of service. He was a member of Whitmell Christian Church where he had served as Deacon.

He was first married to Frances Turner Jones, who predeceased him Jan. 4, 1999. He then married Vickie Entsminger Jones on July 23, 2000.

In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by two sons, Dennis Mathis of Orlando, Fla. and Don Steven Jones of Dry Fork; three daughters, Cindy Jones of Keeling, Lisa Jones of Norfolk and Holly Jones of Dry Fork; a stepdaughter, Jennifer Eden of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a sister, Beulah J. Green of Arkansas; three brothers, Paul Thomas Jones of Harville, Mo., Maurice Jones of Clarksville, Tenn. and Howard Jones of Dexter, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a sister, Thelma J. Ludwig; and a brother, George Jones.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Whitmell Christian Church with the Revs. Butch Dillinger and Jack Oakes officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery with military honors.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and at other times at the residence.

Artis English

CHATHAM, Va. - Artis Carlton English, 72, of 3664 Toshes Road, died Wednesday, June 12, 2002 at his residence.

Born April 27, 1930 in Roanoke, he was the son of Robert Clay English and Florence Parker English Powell.

He was married to Barbara Markham English, who survives. He was a farmer and a member of New Bethel Church of the Brethren having spent most of his life in the Climax area.

Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include one brother, Curtis C. English of Chatham; three stepsons, Donald L. Crouch Jr. of Greenville, S.C., Wesley Robert Crouch of Wilbraham, Mass. and Kyle Mayfield Crouch of Lee, N.H.; two stepdaughters, Debbie C. Hundley of Ridgeway and Beth Markham C. Prohaska of Claredon Hills, Ill.; nine step-grandchildren and three step-great-grandsons.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the New Bethel Church of the Brethren with Leo Johnson, minister, and the Rev. Mike Hundley officiating. Interment will follow at Gretna Burial Park.

The family will receive friends from 7 p.m.-8:30 p.m. Friday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Hughes McClanahan

CHATHAM, Va. - Hughes McClanahan, 47, of 9788 Callands Road, died Tuesday, June 11, 2002 at the Riverside Health Care Center in Danville.

Born February 22, 1955 in New York, he was the son of Alexander McClanahan, who predeceased him, and Eleanor Dillard McClanahan, who survives.

He served in the U.S. Army for four years and was employed as a truck driver with Tomahawk Creek Farm Inc. in Chatham. He was a member of Callands Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors, in addition to his mother of the residents, include three sons, Christopher McClanahan of Danville, Brian McClanahan and Alexander McClanahan, both of Halifax County; a grandmother, Marie Smith of the residence; and two grandchildren.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Miller Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Samuel Scales officiating.

Miller Funeral Home in Gretna is in charge of arrangements.

Henry McLaughlin

DANVILLE, Va. - Henry Clyde McLaughlin Sr., 77, of 125 Swanson St., died Saturday, June 8, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born August 27, 1924 in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Wade McLaughlin and Julia Turner McLaughlin.

He was a laborer for Danville River Mills Inc., and was a member of Gospel Light Holiness Church.

Survivors include one son, Henry C. McLaughlin of the residence; one brother, Patrick McLaughlin of Danville; one sister, Elder Laura Tarpley of Danville; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at James Street Holiness Church with Elder Laura Tarpley officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery with military rites performed by American Legion Post 29.

A viewing will be held from 4 p.m.-8 p.m. Thursday at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home. The family will be at the residence.

Richard ‘Bill' Whitt Jr.

DANVILLE, Va. - Richard Lee (Bill) Whitt, Jr. of Danville, VA died Monday, June 10, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center, following a long illness. He was the son of Reba Dillon Whitt and Richard L. Whitt of Jenkinjones, West Virginia. Mr. Whitt was employed by Consolidation Coal Company in Jenkinjones, West Virginia before moving to Danville in 1960. He was employed by the City of Danville at Brantly Steam plant before retiring. He is survived by his wife, Jean Mustard Whitt; his son and daughter-in-law, Richard Darrell and Ruth Whitt of Keeling, VA; sisters, Edna Sluss of Boissevain, VA, Dorothy Jones of Danville, Rebecca Hubbard of Anawalt, West Virginia and a dearly loved sister-in-law, Rita Senn of Danville. A service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Danville Memorial Gardens. Cremation Society of Virginia is in charge of arrangements. The family suggests memorials be made to the Danville Lifesaving Crew.

Vernon Paul Barbour Sr.

AXTON, Va. - Vernon Paul Barbour Sr., 85, 155 Ferrell Lane, died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, at Blue Ridge Nursing Home, Martinsville.

Born Nov. 25, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of James Millard Barbour and Gertrude Hines Barbour.

He lived most of his life in the Axton community. He was employed as a shipping clerk with Bassett Furniture Company where he retired after 30 years of service. He was a veteran of World War II serving with the U.S. Army.

He was married to Louise Ferrell Barbour who predeceased him on Nov. 29, 1994.

He is survived by three daughters, Joyce Agee, Sandra Swinney, both of Axton and Verna Herring of Martinsville; a son, Steve Barbour of Axton; four sisters, Callie Jones of Danville, Catherine Moore of Fieldale, Boyard Barbour and Elizabeth Williams, both of Danville; nine half brothers and sisters; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a son, Paul Barbour; a brother, Edward Toler Barbour; and two sisters, Edith Barbour and Beatrice Meadows.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Swicegood Chapel with interment in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Candace Bowman Battle

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Candace Bowman Battle, 36, of 3632 Hoss Street, formerly of Danville, Va., died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002, as a result of an automobile accident.

Born July 16, 1967, in Danville, Va., she was the daughter of Wesley and Clara Bowman.

She was formerly married to William D. Battle of Fayetteville, who survives.

She was employed by Dan River, Inc. and Black and Decker Tool Company.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by a daughter, Tiffany Bowman; two sons, Anthony Bowman and Carlos Powell Jr., all of Fayetteville; two sisters, Kimberly Pettiford and Cynthia Gunn, both of Danville, Va.; and six brothers, Sterling Bowman of Ocala, Fla., Rand Bowman of New York, N.Y., Wesley Bowman of San Diego, Calif., Larry Bowman, Lewis Bowman, both of Danville, Va. and Jimmy Bowman of Roanoke, Va.

The funeral will be held 3 p.m. Thursday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Stacey Frazier officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at the home of her father, 129 Jerry Drive, Danville, Va.

Truett Lacy Bowen

VIRGILINA, Va. - Truett Lacy Bowen, 80, of 2192 Bowen Road, died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, at his residence.

Born Dec. 12, 1921, in Halifax County, he was the son of Oscar G. Bowen and Annie Talley Bowen.

He was self employed as a farmer and was a member of North Fork Baptist Church, the American Legion and the Woodmen of World. He was a veteran of the Air Force.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Palmer Bowen of Virgilina; two daughters, Dianne B. Lowery of Roxboro, N.C. and Brenda B. Ellixson of Southport, N.C.; two sons, Dural L. Bowen Sr. and Dwight C. Bowen, both of Virgilina; a brother, Watson Bryant Bowen of Virgilina; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Mason Bowen and Garland Bowen.

The graveside funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at the Virgilina Cemetery with the Rev. Bill LaWall officiating.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Brooks Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

The family suggests memorials be made to the Virgilina Volunteer Fire Association, the Virgilina Cemetery Committee or the North Fork Baptist Church Building Fund.

Estella Pringle Brooks

LONG ISLAND, Va. - Estella Pringle Brooks, 82, of 4216 Buffalo Road, died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, in Lynchburg General Hospital.

Born Feb. 29, 1920, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Leonard L. Pringle and Nannie Clark Pringle.

She was a homemaker and a member of Mt. Airy Baptist Church.

She is survived by a daughter, Linda M. Brooks of the residence; three sons, Thomas Lee Brooks of Lynchburg, James Edward Brooks of Roanoke and Leonard L. Brooks of Long Island; three sisters, Mary A. Gardner, Nannie Saunders, both of Perth Ambroy, N.J. and Louise McCrae of New York, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by two sons, Charles Lewis Brooks and William Allen Brooks; two brothers, James H. Pringle and Leonard Deroy Pringle; and one sister, Mattie Pearl Pringle.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Mt. Airy Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert P. King Sr. officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
