Burnell R. Hubbard

DANVILLE, Va. - Burnell R. Hubbard, 76, of 226 Girard St., died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center. Born June 16, 1926, in Danville, he was the son of Willie Eddie Hubbard and Gracie Simpson Hubbard, both deceased.

He worked at Dan River, Inc. as a slasher attendant until his health failed. He was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by a sister, Oneida H. Evans of the residence. He was predeceased by two brothers, Phillip Hubbard and Linwood Hubbard and a sister, Vivian Barbour.

The graveside funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Schoolfield Cemetery with the Rev. John Gentry officiating.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Alice Harris Humphrey

DANVILLE, Va. - Alice Harris Humphrey, age 84, formerly of 181 Sunset Drive, died Sunday, December 22, 2002 in the Roman Eagle Memorial Home.

She was born on September 16, 1918, in Inman, S.C., a daughter of Andy Harris and Lillian Evington Harris.

She was married to Henry Hilliard Humphrey who died March 4, 1989.

She had lived most of her life in Danville and was of the Methodist faith.

Mrs. Humphrey is survived by her daughter, Margaret H. Motley and her husband, Philip of Danville; a son, C.H. Humphrey and his wife, Polly, of Danville; a sister, Helen H. Williams of LaGrange, Ga.; three grandchildren, Keith Motley, Gwen Motley and Allen Humphrey, all of Danville; and three great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday, December 24, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. from the Mausoleum Chapel at Danville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Freddie Vicks.

The family will receive friends at Townes Funeral Home Monday from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. and at other times will be at the residence of her daughter, Margaret Motley, 212 Homeport Lane and at the residence of her son, C.H. Humphrey, 280 West Main St.

The family suggests that memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 2680, North Canton, Ohio 44720 or to the Danville Life Saving Crew, 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, Va.

Jesse Frank Kellam

DANVILLE, Va. - Jesse Frank Kellam, 73, of 223 Kenmore Drive, died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002 in Piney Forest Health Care Center after a decline in health for the last 10 years and being in Piney Forest Health Care Center for the last three years.

Born May 25, 1929, in Danville, he was a son of Martin Luther Kellam and Mary Poff Kellam.

He lived in Danville all of his life. In his early life he worked for Dan River, Inc. as a supervisor and later was in business with his wife's father, Grapette Bottling Company. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of American Legion Dan River Post #1097.

He was of the Baptist faith and also a graduate of Schoolfield High School. He was married to Jean Myers Kellam.

In addition to his wife, of the home, he is survived by one daughter, Joyce K. McMahon of Apex, N.C.; one son, Jay M. Kellam of Danville; two sisters, Abagail Remmington of Virginia Beach, Va and Bonnie Gilbert of Raleigh, N.C.; and four grandchildren.

He was predeceased by two sisters and two brothers.

The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Highland Burial Park, with the Rev. W.L. Wade officiating. Interment will follow.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

The family suggests in lieu of flowers that donations may be made to the charity of your choice.

Eleanor Ricketts Richardson

DANVILLE, Va. - Eleanor Ricketts Richardson, 82, of 4221 Franklin Turnpike, died Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.

Born June 17, 1920, she was the daughter of William Leonard Ricketts and Ida Coleman Ricketts, both deceased.

She was born in Danville, where she lived for a number of years and later moved to the Mt. Hermon community.

She was a graduate of Whitmell Farm Life School. She worked at Belks for 30 years and was a member of Belk Retirement Club.

She was an active member of Mt. Hermon Baptist Church and was treasurer of the Sunday school.

She was married to William Eugene Richardson, who predeceased her in 1992.

She is survived by two sisters, Inez Hopkins of Richmond and Mildred Buckner of Danville; a brother, Charles E. Ricketts and his wife, Rose Ricketts, of Danville; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Joyce Richardson Payne, in June 1992.

She was also predeceased by three sisters, Annie Collins, Margie Myers and Ruby Cleary.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Mt. Hermon Baptist Church with the Rev. Don Davidson officiating. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Barker Funeral Home and at other times will be at the home of her brother, Charles E. Ricketts, 249 Jordan Street.

The family suggests in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Mt. Hermon Fire Department, 4268 Franklin Turnpike, Danville, VA 24540.

Jean Barbara Cooper Ridgeway

HALIFAX, Va. - Jean Barbara Cooper Ridgeway,69, of 1135 Murphy Grove Road, died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002 at home.

Born July 6, 1933, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Thomas Felton Cooper Sr. and Grace Loretta Ward Cooper.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Republican Grove.

She was married to Willie B. Ridgeway.

In addition to her husband, of the residence, she is survived by two daughters, Joan Marie Vernon of Alton and Janice Ann Guill of Midlothian; one son, Donald Bryant Ridgeway of Williamsburg, Va.; one brother, Charles Cooper of Halifax; one sister, Julia Cooper Whitt of Virgilina; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by one son, Ronnie Lee Ridgeway and five brothers, Harold, Thomas, Gary, Bill and Roy Cooper.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Richard Saunders officiating. Interment will follow in the Halifax Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Powell Funeral Home and at other times will be at the residence.

Gladys Gauldin Sparks

PROVIDENCE, N.C. - Gladys Gauldin Sparks, 66, of 10547 Highway 86 North, died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born July 23, 1936, in Danville, she was the daughter of Jessie E. Gauldin and Minnie Walker Gauldin Blanks.

Most of her life was lived in the Danville and Pelham, N.C. area.

She was a member of the Goodyear Ladies Golf League and served as past President.

She was of the Baptist faith and was a homemaker.

She was married to Rayford Garland Sparks, who predeceased her January 7, 2002.

She is survived by one daughter, Cynthia Sparks Wharton of Ruffin; two sons, William E. Sparks of Morrisville, N.C. and Jon M. Sparks of Providence; six sisters, Pauline G. Ketchum of Danville, Mamie G. New of Ruffin, Delores G. Crabb and Gloria G. Adkins, both of Dry Fork, Carolyn G. Ware of Ringgold and Linda G. Gauldin of Welcome, N.C.; three brothers, Irvin G. Gauldin of Danville, Leonard A. Gauldin of Roxboro and Kenneth W. Gauldin of Pelham; and three grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one sister, Frances J. Meeks and four brothers, Hubert, Luther, Jessie and Ernest Gauldin.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David R. Turbyfill officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times will be at the residence.

Irvin White

DANVILLE, Va. - James Irvin White, 76, of 5280 Mount Cross Road, died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center, after being in declining health the last six months and in the hospital the last five days.

Born June 15, 1926, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of James Conway White and Mamie Breedlove White, who predeceased him.

He had lived all of his life in Pittsylvania County. He had retired from Barkhouser Ford where he had worked for a number of years as parts manager.

Prior to becoming employed by Barkhouser Ford he worked with the former Crowell Long Motor Company of Danville for about 10 years.

He was a member of Mount Olivet United Methodist Church, a member of the Roman Eagle Masonic Lodge and a member of the Danville Scottish Rite Bodies.

He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II on the Destroyer U.S.S. Phillsbury.

He married Ellen Scearce White on January 5, 1949.

In addition to his wife, of the residence, he is survived by two sons, Irvin Keith White and Mark Steven White, both of Danville; three daughters, Sandra W. Hylton and Shelia W. Smith, both of Danville and Patricia W. Jones of Ashburn, Va.; and 13 grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by one brother, Leland C. White and one sister, Cecil W. Benson.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday from the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Don Davidson officiating. Interment will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens with military honors by Dan River American Legion Post 1097.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and at other times will be at the residence.

The family suggests that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to the Mount Cross Volunteer Fire & Rescue, 4812 Mount Cross Road, Danville, Va 24540.

Viola W. Bruce

BLAIRS, Va. - Viola W. Bruce, 71, of 2260 Malmaison Road, died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003 at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 23, 1931, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Burnett Polk and Laura Miller Polk, who predeceased her.

During her working life she was a chef at a number of area restaurants.

She was married to Willie Bruce Sr., who predeceased her earlier this month.

She is survived by one son, Willie Eugene Bruce Jr. of Blairs; two sisters, Ellen Polk of Trenton, N.J. and Delia Sims of Long Island, N.Y.; and two brothers, Arbar Polk of Java and James Polk of Atlanta, Ga.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by two sisters, Mamie Miller and Sallie Wimbush; and three brothers, William Miller, John Polk and Robert Polk.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at the Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with Minister Corey Torrain officiating. Interment will follow in the Highland Burial Park Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Joe Daniel

DANVILLE, Va. - Joseph (Joe) Wayne Daniel, 58, of 311 Seminole Trail, died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003 at his residence.

Born Aug. 8, 1944, in Roanoke Rapids, N.C., he was the son of Ivan Drew Daniel and Annie Retler Daniel.

He had moved back to Danville to live in 1989 after having retired from the U.S. Army with 22 years of service and having lived in a number of different places during his military career. He was of the Baptist faith and a 32nd degree Mason. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #647.

He is survived by a daughter, Sharon Marie Daniel of Annandale; a son, Anthony Leon Daniel of Korea; two brothers, Kenneth Wade Daniel and Carlton Daniel, both of Danville; five sisters, Gayle Resler of Columbia, S.C., Clara Lynch, Pauline Saunders and Joan Graham, all of Danville and Frances Clark, of Jackson, Miss; and one grandson.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday from the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with military honors by American Legion Dan River Post #1097 Honor Guard.

Interment may follow at a later date.

The family will be at the residence of his brother Kenneth and Carolyn Daniel, 130 James Road, Danville.

Polly Adkins Dodson

DANVILLE, Va. - Polly Adkins Dodson, 71, of Druid Lane, went home to Jesus on January 25, 2003. She died in Kindred Hospital in Greensboro, N.C., after being in declining health for the past six months and in the hospital for three months.

Born August 8, 1931, in Caswell County, she was the daughter of the late John Oliver Adkins and the late Margaret Oliver Adkins.

Mrs. Dodson had moved to Danville in 1978 from Yanceyville, N.C. She worked at Dan River Inc. as a Supervisor in the #5 Control Laboratory until she was taken ill on September 2, 2002. She had received her 45 year plaque and a diamond necklace for her years of service on August 28, 2002. Mrs. Dodson was of the Baptist Faith.

She married Leonard Austin Dodson on December 26, 1953. He predeceased her on February 15, 1971.

She is survived by a daughter, Leigh Ann Dodson, of the residence, a beloved nephew, Barry Boyd, and his sons Alex, Travis and Nicholas, all of Winston-Salem, N.C.

Other family members include Kim Adkins of Winston-Salem, N.C., Jimmie Lee Adkins and wife Debbie and their daughter Brandi, also of Winston-Salem, N.C.

Special friends and Guardian Angels Betty Williams of Pelham, N.C. and Wendy Morris of Danville, Va.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by Sally Donna Adkins, John Wallace Adkins, Myrtle Adkins Satterfield, Jim Henry Adkins and Earline Adkins Boyd Bryant.

The funeral will be held 5 p.m. Tuesday from the mausoleum in Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Rodney Barker officiating.

Entombment will follow the service.

The family will be at the residence, 109 Druid Lane, Danville, Va.

Pallbearers will be William Williams, Clyde Hall, James Cottrell, Gene Brown, Sherman Saunders, Jerry Marshall, Leon Burnett and Ron Yeaman.
