After graduating with a bachelor's degree in French, he attended the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University in New York. While he was working towards his Master's degree, he was offered a position with Texaco. Since the position advertised called for a French-speaking college graduate, he believed he would be sent back to Paris, a city he loved. However, after agreeing to the job, he was sent to Dakar, Senegal, as a young executive within the company. He spent most of the 1950s in Africa in varying capacities within Texaco, and lived in the Ivory Coast, Kenya and Tanzania. While in the Ivory Coast, he met and fell in love with Monique Cleau, whom he married in Ankara, Turkey in 1954.

Moving up the ladder in Caltex, a joint venture of Texaco and Chevron, he was named Managing Director in Italy in the late 1960s, and in 1967 they had a daughter, Nathalie, who died shortly after her birth. After a brief stint as Managing Director in Switzerland and Benelux he moved to London, England, where he was asked to form the Kuwait National Petroleum Company. In three years he created a multi-billion dollar company from the ground up. While in London, their only son, Glenn Cartier Jones, was born. Shortly after, he was chosen as the Executive Vice President of Occidental Petroleum, and the family moved to Los Angeles. The last ten years of his career was in international management consulting, and included partnerships with Arthur D. Little in Boston, and Booz Allen and Hamilton in New York.

After his retirement, he volunteered with the International Executive Service Corps and helped create a consulting agency in Cairo, Egypt. When his health precluded him from volunteering, he spent time in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico and Norman, Oklahoma. At age 65, he received a Master's in Liberal Studies from the University of Oklahoma. When his son moved to Danville in July 2001, he moved to Danville and soon after moved into the Stratford House where he resided until the time of his death.

He was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his ex-wife, Monique Jones; his son, Glenn Jones and daughter-in-law, Trisha Jones. His family would like to express their deep gratitude for the kindness and friendship offered by the people of Danville during his last year with us. He enjoyed living at Stratford House, and loved the wait-staff at Red Lobster, Joe and Mimma's, Shoney's and the Danville Golf Club.
