Lonnie C. Jones

DANVILLE, Va. - Lonnie C. Jones, 72, of Blair Loop Road, formerly of Bassett, died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Bassett Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Lillian Gatewood Nethery

PROVIDENCE, N.C. - Lillian Gatewood Nethery, 91, of 3651 Park Springs Road, died Friday, January 24, 2003, in the Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born April 6, 1911, in Caswell County, N.C., she was the daughter of Samuel Gatewood and Laura Davis Gatewood.

She had lived all her life in Caswell County and owned and operated Nethery's Store on Park Spring Road for a number of years. She was a lifelong member of Bethel United Methodist Church.

She was married to Wilson Nethery, who predeceased her in 1962.

She is survived by two daughters, Jane N. Poteat and Judy Carroll, both of Providence, N.C.; a son, Kenneth Fuqua, also of Providence; eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a number of brothers and sisters.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Bethel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Philip S. Brown officiating. Interment will be in Shady Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Townes Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of her daughter, Jane Poteat, 3621 Park Springs Road, Providence, N.C.

The family suggests memorials may be sent to the Bethel United Methodist Church, 6258 Park Springs Road, Pelham, N.C.

Barbara Eloise Minter Richardson

DANVILLE, Va. - Barbara Eloise Minter Richardson, 84, of 2526 North Main St., formerly of Laurel Grove, died Friday, January 24, 2003, in Danville Regional Medical Center after being in declining health for eight months and in the hospital for five days.

Born Sept. 16, 1918, in Newport News, she was the daughter of Louis Jennings Minter and Ada Franklin Minter.

For many years she lived in Richmond, moving to the Laurel Grove Community in 1991. She was a former member of Stockton Memorial Baptist Church in Richmond and a member of the Laurel Grove Baptist Church since 1991.

She taught Sunday School and was a member of the choir.

She married the Rev. E.M. Richardson Jr. on Dec. 1, 1935. He predeceased her.

She is survived by one son, William L. Richardson of Richmond.; four daughters, Margaret R. Revels of Axton, Sandra L. "Sandy" Richardson of Sutherlin, Barbara R. Flowers of Ringgold and Emma Jean R. Howsare of San Antonio, Texas; two brothers, Burn Minter and Jack Minter; 18 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren and three step great-grandchildren.

She was predeceaded by a son, Marvin L. Richardson.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Laurel Grove Baptist Church with the Revs. William Owsley, Edward Newcomb and A. Kyle Flora officiating. Interment will be in the Laurel Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family received friends 7-8 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts, North Main Chapel. At other times they will be at the residence of Sandra Richardson, 1260 Double Creek Road, Laurel Grove Community, Sutherlin, VA.

The family suggests memorials be made to Laurel Grove Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 26, Sutherlin, VA 24566.

Wayne H. Scearce

DANVILLE, Va. - Wayne H. Scearce, 67, of 4905 Comelia Drive, Raleigh, N.C. and 1151 Mill Pond Road, Alton, died Thursday, January 23, 2003, in an automobile accident on Mill Pond Road in Halifax County.

Born August 22, 1935, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of the late Sidney Jackson Scearce and the late Lelia Parrish Scearce.

Mr. Scearce had lived in Danville a number of years prior to having lived in several different places due to his job and having lived in Raleigh for the past 20 years. He also had a home in the Alton Community of Halifax County, Virginia. He had retired from the Jesse Jones Division of Goodmark Foods, where he was a sales manager. He was very active in community activities in both Raleigh and in the Alton community. Mr. Scearce was of the Baptist faith.

He married Shirley Lawhorne Scearce on October 18, 1952.

In addition to his wife, of the residence, he is survived by two sons, Michael Wayne Scearce of Danville and Dennis Ray Scearce of Creedmoor, N.C.; one daughter, Debra Kay Scearce of Halifax; two brothers, Harold Scearce of Danville and Marvin Scearce of Norfolk; four sisters, Thelma S. Adkins of Danville, Frances S. Bass of Ringgold, Catherine S. Trent of BurkBurnett, Texas and Linda S. Brewer of Danville; five grandchildren, Michael J. Scearce, Kimberly Wayne S. McDaniel, Melissa S. McGee, Leah B. Jackson and Betsy R. Jones; and one great-grandchild, Sydney Elizabeth Jones.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Buford and Leland Scearce.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Samuel Greeson officiating. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at the Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel. At other times they will be at the residence of his son Michael W. Scearce, 110 Bannister Court, Danville, Va.

Eldridge Reeves Setliff

DANVILLE, Va. - Eldridge Reeves Setliff, 78, of 215 Setliff Street, died Friday, January 24, 2003, at Avante Nursing Home, Lynchburg.

Born November 30, 1924, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Willie Joe Setliff Sr. and Mary Hudson Setliff, both deceased.

Mr. Setliff was in Danville Regional Medical Center for three weeks before entering the nursing home on December 23, 2002.

He spent most of his life in Danville and operated E & M Diner before retiring in 1984. He previously was associated with Fleming Trucking for 20 years and was also affiliated with the Family Business -Country Club Diner. He was of the Baptist faith.

He was first married to Agnes Perry Setliff, who predeceased him March 12, 1992. He then married Ann Macdonald Setliff, who survives.

In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by two daughters, Linda S. Thomas and husband, James, of Danville and Mary S. Melton and husband, Bob, of Rustburg; a son, Eldridge "Ray" Setliff and wife, Tammy, of Danville; a sister, Lillian S. Mangrum of Troutville; two brothers, Willie Joe Setliff Jr. and Calvin G. Setliff, both of Danville; seven grandchildren, Lisa T. and Mike Jefferson, Sandy M. and Norman Mays, Jay and Jennifer Thomas, Cathy M. and David Phillips, Zac Setliff, Nick Setliff and Holley Setliff; four great-grandchildren, Lauren Brooke Renninger, Taylor Nicole Phillips, Cole Thomas Renninger and Madison Brooke Phillips.

He was predeceased by two grandchildren, Kelli Rae Setliff and Robert L. Melton Jr.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Gilmer Setliff officiating. Interment will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the home of his son, Ray Setliff, 162 Setliff Street, Danville.

The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Danville Life Saving Crew, 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, VA 24541.

Chester Eugene 'Gene' Stanton

REIDSVILLE, N.C. - Chester Eugene "Gene" Stanton, 69, of 157 Norwood Drive, died Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Iberia, Ky., a son of Lawrence F. and Eula Williams Stanton.

He served his country as a veteran of the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He retired from the American Tobacco Company as a head foreman and was a co-owner of Stanton's Satellite. He attended Lawsonville Road Baptist Church and was a member of Broadford Missionary Baptist Church in Clarkson, Ky.

He is survived by his wife, Ann Skaggs Stanton of the residence; a daughter, Cynthia "Cindy" Stanton Underwood of Danville, Va.; a son, Phil Stanton of Eden; two brothers, the Rev. Charles "Abb" Stanton of Upton, Ky. and Conroy Stanton of Leitchfield, Ky.; four sisters, Lorene Haycraft of Leitchfield, Ky., Dorothy "Dot" Branham of Indiana, Sue Constant of Elizabethtown, Ky. and Winona Hawkins of Clarkson, Ky. and two grandchildren.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Franklin and Larry Stanton and two sisters, Estella Dennis and Louise Downs.

The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at Broadford Baptist Church, Clarkson, Ky., with the Rev. Abb Stanton officiating. Interment will follow in Stanton Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 4-6 p.m. Sunday at Wilkerson Funeral Home and 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at Rogers-Oller Funeral Home in Clarkson, Ky.

Grace Evelyn Law Watkins

CASCADE, Va. - Grace Evelyn Law Watkins, of 13224 Martinsville Hwy., died Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

She was born in Pittsylvania County, a daughter of Jim T. Law and Julia Cabiness Law.

She was employed at Dan River Mills. She attended Silver Creek Missionary Baptist Church.

She was married to Johnny Watkins.

In addition to her husband of the residence, she is survived by a daughter, Barbara Stroud of Danville; two brothers, Burnice Law of Danville and Woodrow Law of Cascade and four sisters, Sarah Watkins of Danville, Ethel Stone of Martinsville, Lucille Carter of Axton and Viola Jefferson of Pittsburgh, Pa.

The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at Silver Creek Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Booker George officiating. Interment will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens.

A viewing will be held 4-8 p.m. Monday at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home.

The family will be at the residence.

Larry Thomas Adkins

MIAMI, Fla. - Larry Thomas Adkins, 51, died July 21, 2002, in Miami, Fla.

Born June 25, 1951, in South Boston, Va., he was the son of Irvin Thomas Adkins, who predeceased him, and Elizabeth Morris Adkins, who survives.

He was living in Miami at the time of his death. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in the Vietnam War.

In addition to his mother of Danville, Va., survivors include two sons, Duane Thomas Adkins of Durham, N.C. and Joshua Irvin Adkins of Honolulu, Hawaii; and two sisters, Lori Adkins Kies of Hallandale, Fla. and Lisa Marie Adcox of Henderson, N.C.

The memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at the Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jack Robertson officiating and military honors by the American Legion Dan River Post #1097, Honor Guard. The interment will be private.

The family suggests that memorials be made to VFW, Ballard Pruitt Post #647, VFW Drive 58 West, Danville, VA, 24541 or Elizabeth Adkins, 368 Juless St., Danville, VA, 24541.

Ricky Arnold

DANVILLE, Va. - William Ricky Arnold, 44, of 739 Holland Road, died Wednesday, July 31, 2002, in the V.A. Hospital in Salem, Va. He had been declining in health for five months.

Born Nov. 3, 1957, in Danville, he was the son of William Hyter Arnold and Shirley Crumpton Motley, who both survive.

He was married July 2, 1993, to Wendy Abbott Arnold. Prior to his decline in health, he was employed as a truck driver with R.L. Shelton Trucking Company in Stuart. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and was a member of American Legion Post 1097. He was of the Baptist faith and lived all of his life in the Danville area.

In addition to his parents of Danville and his wife of the residence, he is survived by one stepdaughter, Crystal Ann Abbott; a stepfather, Billy L. Motley Sr.; and one stepmother, Peggy Bishop Arnold, all of Danville.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with Rev. Hershel Stone officiating. American Legion Post #1097 will conduct military rites at the service.

The family will receive friends at the residence of David and Sylvia Abbott, 889 Mill Creek Road, Danville.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to VAVS, c/o V.A. Medical Center, 1970 Roanoke Blvd., Salem, VA, 24153.

Sally 'Lib' Bailey

REIDSVILLE, N.C. - Sally Elizabeth "Lib" Moore Bailey, 82, formerly of 639 Lindsey Street, died Thursday, August 1, 2002, at Britthaven of Madison.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, August 4, 2002, 2:00 PM at First Congregational Christian Church. Interment will follow in Reidlawn Cemetery.

Mrs. Bailey was born in Pittsylvania County to the late John Lindsey Moore and Annie Crawford Moore. She was a retired seamstress with Brookside Industries and a member of First Congregational Christian Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Walter Bailey, sons, James W. Bailey, Jr. and Scott Lindsey Bailey.

She is survived by daughters, Vicky B. Trent and husband, Joe of Carolina Beach, Kathy B. Carlton and husband, Guy of Reidsville. Five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and sister, Bessie M. Vicks of Danville.

The family will receive friends at Wilkerson Funeral Home on Saturday, August 3, 2002, from 6:00-8:00 PM.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Rockingham County, PO Box 281, Wentworth, North Carolina 27375 or Rockingham County Council on Aging, PO Box 1915, Reidsville, North Carolina 27323-1915.

James Earl Chambers

GRETNA, Va. - James Earl Chambers, 68, of 2661 Hodnetts Road, died Tuesday at the Virginia Baptist Hospital in Lynchburg.

Born March 14, 1934, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Joseph Chambers and Mabel Callands Chambers.

He was married to Shirley Miller Chambers, who predeceased him. He was an army veteran and a retired autoclave operator with Ross Laboratories in Altavista. He was a member of Greenhill Masonic Lodge #277 in Mt. Airy and he served on the board of deacons at Mt. Airy Baptist Church, where he was also a Sunday school teacher.

Survivors include two daughters, Lashawn Chambers and Sonya Chambers, both of Gretna; one son, James L. Chambers of Camp Kyle, South Korea; three brothers, Bernard Chambers, Hubert Chambers, and Irvine Chambers, all of Gretna; three sisters, Wilma C. Motley of Brookneal, Rosa Chambers of Gretna, and Lou Emma Gordon of Edgefield, S.C.; six grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

He was predeceased by two granddaughters.

The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Airy Baptist Church with Rev. R.P. King officiating. Interment with military honors by VFW Post #4165 and DAV #46 of Altavista will follow in the Chambers family cemetery in the Renan community.

The body will lie in state at the church noon until 1:00 p.m. Saturday at the church. The viewing will be held 3-7 p.m. Friday at Miller Funeral Home. The family is at the residence of his daughter, Lashawn Chambers, 2590 Hodnetts Road in Gretna.

Virginia Gertrude Barber Kirk

DANVILLE, Va. - Virginia Gertrude Barber Kirk, 76, of 1140 Burton Drive, died Tuesday, July 30, 2002, at Stratford Health Care Center. She had been in declining health for two weeks.

Born Dec. 9, 1925, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Joel Leonard Barber and Verna Inez Barker Barber.

She was married to William Pearl Kirk, who predeceased her. She lived in Pittsylvania County her entire life. She was employed at Dan River, Inc. for 42 years prior to retirement and was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sisters, Elizabeth B. Guill and Elsie B. Belcher, both of Danville; and one brother, L.B. Barber of Danville.

She was predeceased by one sister, Mary Louise Lynch.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Woodlawn Baptist Church with Rev. William C. Blalock officiating. Interment follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

The family suggests memorials be sent to the Woodlawn Baptist Church Memorial Fund.
