Bertha Thomas Swann

DANVILLE, Va. - Bertha Thomas Swann, 79, of 312 Brooke Drive, died Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born May 28, 1923, in Pelham, N.C., she was the daughter of William Henry Thomas and Nettie Thomas.

She was married to William Andrew Swann, who predeceased her.

She is survived by two sisters, Ada Mae Forrester of Lynchburg and Odessa Watt of Reidsville; and four brothers, Lee Thomas of Saginaw, Mich., Australia Thomas of Newport News, Herman Thomas and Robert Thomas, both of Durham, N.C.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two children, William E. Swann and Gloria S. Williams.

The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Monday at Shady Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Haywood T. Gray officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Maliyah Renee Terry

DANVILLE, Va. - Maliyah Renee Terry, infant daughter of LaTonya Terry and Robert Cray Hairston, died Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center.

In addition to her parents of Danville, she is survived by a brother, Malik Terry of Danville; a maternal grandmother, Ernestine T. Lynn of Danville; and a paternal grandfather, Curtis Hairston of Martinsville.

The graveside funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Herbert L. Dickerson officiating.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 252 Parker Road, Apt. 28.

Odessa Denny Williams

DANVILLE, Va. - Odessa Denny Williams, of 66 Ashlawn Drive, died suddenly Friday, Nov. 8, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born July 10, 1920, in Rockingham County, N.C., she was the daughter of Thomas Jefferson Denny and Indiana Gauldin Denny.

She was of the Baptist faith.

She was first married to Robert Cooney, who predeceased her in 1970. She later married Dempsey G. Williams in 1975.

In addition to her husband of the residence, she is survived by two sisters, Hazel D. Forbes of Danville and Doris D. Neighbors of Ruffin, N.C.

She was predeceased by four sisters, Mary Gammon, Bessie Curry, Clady Finney and Dreusella Evans; and five brothers, Randolph Denny, Russell Denny, Clyde Denny, Herman Denny and Weldford Denny.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Danville Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel with the Rev. Linwood Daniel officiating. Entombment will follow after the service.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Townes Funeral Home and at other times the family will be at the residence.

Anne Sink Bell

DANVILLE, Va. - Anne S. Bell, 89, passed away peacefully on Tuesday afternoon, April 23, 2002 of natural causes.

She had been a member of the Mt. Cross Road community for over fifty years. Mrs. Bell served Dan River, Inc., for thirty-five years and completed her career as secretary to the Director of Personnel. She was a member of Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church for over fifty years and served as the Treasurer of the United Methodist Women for a number of years. Mrs. Bell was a charter member of ABWA the Danville Chapter.

She was born, January 8, 1913 in Salisbury, NC to the late George Ernest Sink and Lucy Brandon Sink. Her brother George Gilbert Sink preceded her in death. She was the wife of William Taft Bell of Danville, for sixty-five years, who survives. She is also survived by her children, Frances Anne Bell Simms of Arlington, and George Robert Bell of Danville; her brother, CDR. Robert Elwood Sink of San Diego, CA. Her Legacy includes four grandchildren: Melissa Dee Bell of Danville, George Robert Bell, Jr. and William Frederick Bell both of Providence, NC and Shannon Lara Simms of Arlington.

The family will receive friends at Townes Funeral Home, 215 West Main Street on Friday evening, April 26 from 6-8 p.m. The funeral will be conducted at Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church, Mt. Cross Road, on Saturday morning, April 27 at 11:00 a.m. by the Rev. Wayne Crews. Interment of the remains will follow at the family plot in Salisbury, N.C. on Monday.

The family requests "no flowers" in accordance with the wishes of the deceased. As a living memorial, please contribute to the Music and Youth Ministries of Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church, 229 Mt. Olivet Lane, Danville, VA 24540.

Richard Clark

MECHANICSVILLE, Va. - Richard Wilson Clark, 98, died Sunday, April 21, 2002, at St. Mary's Hospital in Richmond.

Born March 14, 1904, in South Boston, he was married to Martha Hairston Clark, who predeceased him. He was a shift worker for Dan River Mills.

Survivors include two daughters, Marian H. Thomas of Mechanicsville, and Jean Hairston of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two stepsons, John Hairston of Broken Arrow, Okla., and Joe Hairston of St. Albans, N.Y.; three stepdaughters, Hazel Briggs of East Orange, N.J., Mabel Boston of Arlington, and Dorothy Daniels of Mechanicsville; and 17 grandchildren.

The graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Friday at Crooktown Cemtery on Piney Forest Road with Elder Marian Thomas officiating.

The family will receive friends noon-1 p.m. Friday at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home.

Sarah Dickerson

GRETNA, Va. - Sarah Jane Carter Dickerson, 92, of Kings Court Apt. 17, died Tuesday, April 23, 2002, at the residence.

Born June 18, 1909, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Lovell R. Carter and Clementine Hubard Carter.

She was married to Ocie Dickerson, who predeceased her.

Survivors include three daughters, Florine Callands of Upper Marlboro, Md., Sharon Gilbert of Germantown, Md. and Deloris Dickerson of Mitchelville, Md.; three sons, Odell Dickerson of Baltimore, William Dickerson of Lanham, Md. and Troy Dickerson of Englewood, N.J.; 16 granddaughter; and 32 great grandchildren.

She was predeceased, in addition to her husband and parents, by six sisters, Katie Logan, Bessie Keatts, Rhoda Patrick, Florence Terry, Lena Watkins, and Lillie Prevard; and two brothers, Henry and John Luther Carter.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Burnett Clark officiating. Interment will follow at Carter-Logan Family Cemetery in Gretna.

The family will receive friends from 10-11 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Sandra ‘Sandy' McDowell

ELON COLLEGE, N.C. - Sandra "Sandy" Turpin McDowell, 51, of 241 Milesville Road, died Tuesday, April 23, 2002, at the residence.

Born June 3, 1950, in Danville, she was a daughter of Irvin Turpin and Ruby Collins Stratton.

She lived most of her life in Danville and worked as a nurse before becoming disabled. She was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include two daughters, Denise Yarbrough of Fayetteville and Stephanie Wallace of Danville, Va.; one son, Jason McDowell of Thomasville; two sisters, Kathy Combe of Elon College and Lisa Stratton of Rock Hill, S.C.; and three grandchildren.

The memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Swicegood Funeral Home with the Rev. Wayne Hall officiating. Interment will be private.

The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home and other times will be at the residence of Videl Pizzino, 202 Motley Ave.

The family suggests memorials be made to the Danville Life Saving Crew, 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, Va. 24541.

Virginia Motley

DANVILLE, Va. - Virginia Henderson Motley, 95, of 238 Crossland Avenue, died on April 23, 2002, in Stratford Health Care following several years of declining health and 12 days in the hospital.

Born on Sept. 9, 1906, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of the late Daniel Webster Henderson and the late Sarah Myer Henderson.

She was married on July 14, 1928, to the late Zenas Timothy Motley, who died on April 5, 1997. Mrs. Motley had lived all of her life in the Blairs Community of Pittsylvania County and in Danville where she was a homemaker. Mrs. Motley was a member of Kentuck Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Carroll H. Motley & wife Irene of Lynchburg, Va., and Philip D. Motley & wife Margaret of Danville, Va.; one daughter, Virginia M. Blair & husband Bobby of Danville, Va.; daughter in law, Nancy F. Motley of Danville, Va.; one sister, Louise H. Blankenship of Danville, Va.; 8 grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren.

She was predeceased in addition to her parents and husband by one son Donald T. Motley and one granddaughter Martha Frances Motley, seven sisters Lillie H. Hill, Elizabeth H. Cassada, Bertha H. Compton, Ethel Henderson, Myrtle H. Mylum, Mary H. Blankenship and Evelyn H. Wiles and by four brothers Ellis Henderson, Sumpter Henderson, Lawrence Henderson and Frank Henderson.

The funeral will be held Friday, April 26th at 2:00 p.m. from the graveside in Highland Burial Park by the Reverend Dr. A.C. Smith & Reverend Rick Lancaster. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park.

The family received friends Thursday night from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at the Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and at other times at the residence 238 Crossland Avenue, Danville, Va.

The family suggests memorials may be made to Danville Life Saving Crew, 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, Va. 24541.

Ella Rowley

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Ella Juanita Brown Rowley, of 1525 Main St., died Tuesday, April 23, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center in Danville, Va.

Born Dec. 3, 1926, in Caswell County, she was the daughter of Daniel Brown and Victoria Thomas Brown.

She was married to Navy Rowley, who predeceased her. She was a member of Bibleway Cathedral in Danville, Va., where she was a member of the Progressive Club. She was a retired beautician.

Survivors include one daughter, Kathy L. Rowley of Philadelphia, Pa.; one twin brother, David M. Brown of Reidsville; one sister, Pauline Brown of Yanceyville; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased, in addition to her husband and parents, by six sisters, Lillian Williamson, Mabel Hooper, Addie Wade, Nonie Hall, Maetokie Farr, and Pendora Poteat; and two brothers, Jasper Brown, and Leerie Brown.

The funeral will be held 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Bibleway Cathedral in Danville, Va. with Apostle Lawerance Campbell officiating. Interment will follow at Brown Arbor Church cemetery in Gibsonville.

The viewing will be held 2-8 p.m. Saturday at Fulton Funeral Home Chapel.

The family will be at the residence of Pauline Brown, 6656 Badgett Sister Parkway in Yanceyville.

Mary Walters

DANVILLE, Va. - Mary Edna Walters, 78, of 44 Oak Lane, died Wednesday, April 24, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born April 18, 1924, in Caswell County, N.C., she was the daughter of George Hill Long and Virginia Gunn Long.

She was married to Henry A. Walters, who predeceased her.

Survivors include two daughters, Ann Walters of Danville, and Jacqueline Irving of Roanoke; three sons, Allen Walters of Danville, Michael Walters of Pelham, N.C., and Donald Walters of Roanoke; five sisters, Martha Swann of Baltimore, Md., Francis Weatherford of Danville, Estelle Jefferies of Reidsville, N.C., Catherine Turner, and Carolyn Lea, both of Yanceyville, N.C.; two brothers, Herbert Long of Baltimore, Md., and Clarence Long of Danville.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Carl Bigelow officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence of Francis Weatherford, 1212 West Paxton St. in Danville.

Patsy Riley Boswell

DANVILLE, Va. - Patsy Riley Boswell, 60, of 267 Howeland Circle, died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002, in Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born March 28, 1942, in Danville, she was a daughter of Alton B. Riley Sr. and Ruth Fields Riley.

She had lived most of her life in Danville and was employed with the Pittsylvania County Department of Social Services for over 30 years.

She was a graduate of George Washington High School and attended Averett College. She was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church.

She married John P. Boswell on June 19, 1959.

In addition to her husband, of the residence, she is survived by a daughter, Martha B. Tucker of Ringgold; two brothers, Alton B. Riley Jr. of Danville and Richard W. Riley of Germantown, Tenn. and three grandchildren.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Dana Hunt, the Rev. Carl Burger and the Rev. Sandra C. Bottoms officiating. Interment will be in Mountain View Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Townes Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the residence.

Mary Vowell Carter

DANVILLE, Va. - Mary Vowell Carter, 93, formerly of 116 Westmoreland Court, died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2002, in Roman Eagle Memorial Home.

Born Sep. 11, 1909, in Haw River, N.C., she was the daughter of Thomas L. Vowell and Edmonia Vowell Vowell.

She was a graduate of Danville Public Schools and attended Averett College. She was an active member of Keen Street Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday School teacher.

She retired as office manager of M & M Furniture after 21 years of employment.

She was married to Hiram David Carter, who predeceased her on Feb. 15, 1981.

She is survived by two step-sons, Hiram D. Carter Jr. of Newport News and Charlie W.P. Carter of Greenwood, S.C.In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a sister, Iris V. Bailey.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday from Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Tom Brown and the Rev. Tom Wright officiating.

The family suggests that memorials may be made to Keen Street Baptist Church, 541 Keen Street, Danville, VA 24540.

Nellie M. Eames

FOREST, Va. - Nellie M. Eames, 81, of 602 Goose Ridge Drive, formerly of Ferrum, died Friday, Dec. 27, 2002, at her residence.

Born May 24, 1921, in Baltimore, Md., she was the daughter of Charles Hall and Carrie Praley Hall.

She was a homemaker. She was a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher.

She is survived by a daughter, Roberta Craig of Forest; three sons, Clifton D. Eames of Fort Smith, Ark., Robert L. Eames of Greenville, Tenn. and Richard Eames of Danville; a sister, Jeanette Cascio of Wiersdale, Fla.; a brother, Melvin Hall of Tiverton, R.I.; 16 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Clifton David Eames, four brothers, four sisters, one grandchild and one great-grandchild.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Roselawn Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. John Ingram and the Rev. Glen Voss officiating. Interment will be in Roselawn Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Roselawn Chapel Funeral Home.
