Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Ann E. Williamson

DANVILLE, Va. - Ann E. Williamson of 231 Updike Place, Danville, passed away Thursday morning, Feb. 6, 2003 at Danville Regional Medical Center, after several months of declining health.

She was born in a Greek Colony near Trepizon, Turkey, on the south shore of the Black Sea, where her father was headmaster of a school. Just months after her birth, there was an uprising of the Turks against the Greeks, and the family had to flee to safer territory. She was the daughter of Theodore Eliadis and Anna Eliadis.

Soon they came to America, and after several years finally settled in Boston. She received her education at the schools of Boston and at Boston University.

She was the wife of the Rev. Elbert M. Williamson, and they had celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary, Aug. 6, 2002.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, the Westminister Bible Class, the Wednesday Club, and the Danville Art League.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, John Williamson of Richmond, Va. and a daughter, Mary Anna Williamson of Memphis, Tenn., one brother, Ted Eliadis of Fenwood, N.J. and two grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held on Sunday, Feb. 9, 2003 at 3 p.m. from Greenhill Cemetery by Dr. Charles LaPlaca.

The family will receive friends on Saturday night from 7-8:30 p.m. at Townes Funeral Home and at other times will be at the residence, 231 Updike Place.

George Robert Wise

DANVILLE, Va. - George Robert Wise, 77, formerly of 14 Dula St., died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003, at Piney Forest Health Care Center where he had been a patient since Dec. 18, 2000.

Born Sept. 23, 1925, in Holston County, he was a son of Newton Wise and Myrtle Tillison Wise.

He lived most of his life in Norfork where he retired from Smith Williams Funeral Home. He had lived in Danville for three years. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army.

He is survived by three daughters, Judy Counts of Chicago, Ill., Kathy Davis of Kingsport, Tenn. and Jo Ann Watford of Darlington, S.C.; a son, Larry Wayne Wise of Bristol; two brothers, Charlie Wise and Carl Wise, both of Danville; two sisters, Selma Owens and Christeen Wooten, both of Danville; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

The graveside funeral and interment will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Mt. View Cemetery in Bristol.

The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home.

Belvie Calvin Gammon

DANVILLE, Va. - Belvie Calvin Gammon, 74, of 1765 Loom Fixer Lake Road, died suddenly Monday, Dec. 16, 2002.

Born April 17, 1928, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Sam Henry Gammon and Thelma White Gammon.

He lived his entire life in the Pittsylvania County and Danville areas where, prior to his retirement, he was employed with Masonite as an equipment operator and farmed for many years.

He served in the U.S. Army in the Korean Conflict.

He married Freda McDaniel Gammon Aug. 2, 1950.

In addition to his wife, of the residence, he is survived by three daughters, Lois G. Finney of Cascade, Judy G. Finney of Danville and Joyce G. Weatherford of Chatham; four brothers, Doug Gammon, Marvin Gammon, Jack Gammon, all of Dry Fork and Oakes Gammon, Pelham, Va.; one sister, Iris G. Scearce of Dry Fork; and one grandchild.

He was predeceased by one son, Barry Carl Gammon and one brother, Albert Gammon.

The graveside services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday at Danville Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Wayne Hall officiating.

The family received friends 7-8:30 Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel. At other times they will be at the daughter's residence, Joyce G. Weatherford, 3096 Banister Road, Chatham.

The family suggests that memorial donations be made to Bachelors Hall Fire Dept., 1301 Berry Hill Road, Danville, Va. 24541 or the Danville Life Saving Crew, 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, Va. 24541.

Phyllis Ann Chaney

DANVILLE, Va. - Phyllis Ann Chaney, 62, of 993 Mill Creek Road, died Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002 at Wesley Long Hospital in Greensboro, N.C.

Born July 15, 1940, in Pittsylvania County, Va., she was a daughter of Giles Robertson and Pernell Waller Robertson.

She was married to Robert Chaney, who predeceased her.

She was formerly employed at Dimon, Inc.

She is survived by two daughters, April Chaney of Decatur, Ga. and Penny Jackson of Danville; two sons, Ronald Chaney of Decatur, Ga. and Dennis Chaney of Roanoke; six sisters, Louise Roders of Ringgold, Rosa Robertson and Pernell Jones, both of Danville, Josephine Beck and Dottie Motley, both of Blairs and Pandora Hairston of Lynchburg; and four brothers, Lonzy Robertson of Martinsville, Percy Robertson, Frank Robertson and Eugene Robertson, all of Danville.

The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at White Stone Holiness Church with Pastor Gloria Cameron, Eulogist. Interment will follow in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Walter Braxton 'Brack' Covington

HALIFAX, Va. - Walter Braxton "Brack" Covington, 95, of L.P. Memorial Highway, died Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002 at Berry Hill Nursing Home.

Born March 7, 1907, in Halifax County, he was the son of Walter Henry Covington and Nannie Tucker Covington.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Millstone, where he was a deacon, taught Sunday School, and was involved with the jail ministry.

He was married to Beaulah Tuck Covington.

He is survived by one sister, Alice C. Davis, of Chesapeake.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church of Millstone, with the Rev. Bob Watts, the Rev. Anthony Reeves and the Rev. Allen Thompson officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Powell Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of his niece Agnes Gregory, 520 Pine Road, Halifax.

Powell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Joe Lewis Harris

GRETNA, Va. - Joe Lewis Harris, 64, of 1624 Glenland Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002 in Lynchburg General Hospital.

Born Aug. 28, 1938, in Charlotte County, he was a son of Thelma Pearlie Harris and Annie Fitzgerald Harris.

He was a retired employee of Klopman Mills and was a member of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

He was married to Shirley Harris.

In addition to his wife, of the residence, he is survived by two daughters, Shirley Stone and Elsie Calloway, both of Gretna; two brothers, Pearlie Harris Jr and Herbert Harris, both of Danbury, Conn.; five sisters, Edna Haynes of Lynchburg, Nannie Hurt of Keysville, Va., Florene Harris and Beatrice Hunt, both of Hurt and JoAnn Monroe of Gretna; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Hurt, with the Rev. Nathaniel Jones. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Ernest Charlie Hiett

COLUMBIA, Md. - Ernest Charlie Hiett, 58, of 6038 Cloudy April Way, Columbia, Md., died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002 at the Howard County General Hospital in Columbia, Md.

Born Aug. 3, 1944 in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of the late Will Arthur and Alice Irby Hiett.

Survivors include daughters Taleah Averett of Danville and Denise Hiett of Brooklyn, N.Y.; sons Lewis Hiett of Columbia, Md., Michael Hiett and David Hiett, both of Baltimore, Md.; sisters Catherine Hooper of Bronx, N.Y., Rosa Henry of Elizabeth, N.J., Hattie Griffin, Margaret Carter, Lorraine Dixon and Patsy Howell, all of Danville; brothers Harry Hiett of Danville; Johnnie Hiett of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Jack Mayo of Newark, N.J.; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with Bishop Fred Kidd officiating.

Interment will follow in the Hiett Family Cemetery in Keeling.

The family will receive friends at the home of Larry Hiett, 529 Cabell St., Danville.

Winnona Pippin Hopkins

BACHELORS HALL, Va. - Winnona Pippin Hopkins, 80, of 505 Windsor Court, died Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Sep. 30, 1922, in Washington County, Va, she was the daughter of Walter Pippin and Lillie Pippin.

She lived most of her life in Danville and was a member of First Christian Church.

She had been in declining health for the past three years.

She married Joseph Green Hopkins, who predeceased her in January 1996.

She is survived by a son, Joseph L. Hopkins, of the residence and one sister, Wanda Mobley, of Danville.

The graveside service will be 11 a.m. Thursday in Danville Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Ray Wiggs officiating.

The family will be at the residence.

Joseph Leicht

RINGGOLD, Va. - Joseph Leicht, 56, 162 Mt. Hill Road, died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002 in Jackson, Ohio.

Born March 10, 1946, in Austria, he was the son of Nikolaus Christian Leicht and Magdalena Bogner Leicht, both deceased.

He died suddenly from a heart attack while in Jackson, Ohio. He worked as an instrument fitter for H.B. Zachary Company of San Antonio, Texas.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corp during the Vietnam War.

He was of the Full Gospel faith.

He and his wife and child made Danville, Va their home since 1990. He was a loving and caring husband and father.

He married Ethel Ann Weeks Leicht April 30, 1982.

He is survived by one son, Christopher Nikolaus Leicht, of the residence; four brothers, Stefan Leicht of Austria, Chris Leicht of Galion, Ohio, Nikolaus Leicht and Pete Leicht, both of Mansfield, Ohio; and two sisters, Katherine Ries and Ann Bohland, both of Mansfield, Ohio.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bobby Jones and the Rev. Leo Wiles officiating.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 Thursday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel. At other times they will be at the residence.

Betty Jo Shumate Lester

CHATHAM, Va. - Betty Jo Shumate Lester, 64, of Chatham and formerly of Collinsville, died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002 at her home.

Born Feb. 13, 1938, in Grayson County, Va., she was the daughter of Oscar Shumate and Annie Jones Shumate.

She was a teacher aide with Henry County Public Schools. She was a member of Fairway Baptist Church in Bassett.

She is survived by two daughters, Pamela Lester Holland of Chatham and Ginger Lester Purdy of Spencer; three brothers, Sam Shumate of Collinsville, Glen Shumate of Galax and Harold Shumate of Woodlawn; one sister, Wanda Byrd of Mt. Airy, N.C.; and two grandchildren.

She was predeceased by one son, Michael Lester; one daughter, Cherrie Lester; and two sisters, Frances Black and Carolyn Kenny.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Fairway Baptist Church with the Rev. Mike Montgomery officiating. Interment will follow in the Roselawn Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Fairway Baptist Church. At other times they will be at the home of her daughter, Ginger Purdy, 17942 A.L. Philpott Highway, Spencer.

James Lipscomb

BLAIRS, Va. - James Lipscomb, 85, of 1620 Malmaison Road, died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002 at Piney Forest Health Care Center in Danville.

He was born Nov. 15, 1917 in Caswell County, N.C., to the late Robert and Sherdine Bowe Lipscomb.

Survivors include stepson George Hairston of Danville; sister Dorothy L. Butler of Norfolk; and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was predeceased by five sisters and two brothers.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 1620 Malmaison Road in Blairs.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.

Sallie G. Mabin

DANVILLE, Va. - Sallie G. Mabin, 89, of 146 Smith Street, died Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002 at the University Hospital in Augusta, Ga.

She was born Aug. 24, 1913, in South Boston, to the late Wayman and Margaret Farmer Garrett. She was married to Willard Mabin, who preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughters Florene M. Jeffries, of Bronx, N.Y., and Margaret Smith of Hephzibah, Ga.; sister Amanda McLaughlin of Danville; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a host of other relatives and friends.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her daughter Laverne Bethel.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Beulah Baptist Church with Dr. Frankie Jones officiating. Interment will follow in Floral Hills Memorial Garden.

The family will receive friends from 5-6 p.m. Saturday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home, and at other times will be at the residence.
