Harry Hoover

DANVILLE, Va. - Harry Hubert Hoover, of 310 Westview Drive, died Wednesday, May 15, 2002, at the Riverside Health Care Ceneter where he had been a resident for the past 22 months. He had been in declining health for the past year.

Born Aug. 19, 1918, in Clemmons, N.C., he was the son of Hugh Elias Hoover and Annie Combs Hoover.

He was married to Mary Tate Hoover, who survives. He was a member of Grace Design United Methodist Church and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II. He was retired from Disston Inc. and was the last remaining member of his immediate family.

Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include two sons, Harry Thomas Hoover of Asheboro, N.C., and William Hugh Hoover of Cedar Grove, N.C.; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Grace Design United Methodist Churchy by the Rev. Thomas Shepherd. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens with military honors performed by American Legion Post 1097 Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Townes Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence.

Rennie "P.D." Hunt

DANVILLE, Va. - Rennie Edward "P.D." Hunt, 67, of 537 1/2 N. Main St., died Saturday, May 11, 2002, at the residence.

Born Aug. 23, 1934, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Rennie E. Hunt and Elizabeth Lowe Hunt.

He was of the Baptist faith and worked for Norman Myers Construction Co. and Lorillard Tobacco Co.

Survivors include one brother, Thomas L. Hunt of Danville; and three sisters, Olivia H. Waller of Woodbridge, Odessa H. Hostley, and Delores Robinson, both of Danville.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Liberty Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Jasper Watkins officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park.

The viewing will be held 2-8 p.m. Thursday and the family will receive friends at other times at 509 Chatelaine Ave.

Jesse Lunsford Jr.

MADISON, Tenn. - Jesse Arnold (Jay/Jess) Lunsford, Jr., 42, formerly of Durham, N.C.died May 6, 2002 at his residence in Madison, Tenn.

He was born August 5, 1959, in Durham, N.C., the son of Jesse A. Lunsford, Sr. and Irene Blalock Lunsford.

He was a songwriter, musician.

He was preceded in death by his father, Jesse A. Lunsford, Sr.

He is survived by his mother, Irene Blalock Lunsford of Yanceyville, N.C.; two sisters, Patricia Toler and husband, John of Princeton, N.C., and Nancy Adcox and husband, Stephen of Raleigh, N.C.; niece Terese Suzanne Messick of Raleigh, N.C., and nephew, Jonathan Aaron Toler of Princeton, N.C.

Jay was a beloved son and brother. His loving spirit and his music made everyone's life much richer.

The visitation will be held 1-2:30 p.m. Saturday at Marley Funeral Home.

The graveside service will be held 3 p.m. at Blalock Family cemetery in Prospect Hill, N.C.

The family is at the home of Irene Lunsford, 1555 Hwy. 158 West, Yanceyville, N.C.

Elizabeth Mayo

ETTRICK, Va. - Elizabeth Ann Mayo, 56, died Saturday, May 11, 2002, at Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg.

Born April 25, 1946, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Elizabeth Goode Venable, who survives, and Richard Venable.

She was married to John Mayo Jr., who survives. She was a graduate of Virginia State University and taught at A.P. Hill Elementary School. She was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church.

Survivors, in addition to her mother of Danville and husband of Ettrick, include one son, John Mayo Jr.; one daughter Michelle Mayo Williams; three grandchildren; one sister, Jacqueline Evonne Younger; two brothers, Richard Venable of Danville, and Al Donnovan of Danville.

The funeral was held 12 p.m. Wednesday at Tabernacle Baptist Church in Petersburg with the Rev. Diggs officiating.

Ruby Phipps

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - On May 14, 2002 at 11 p.m. Ruby Lee Weatherspoon Baldwin Phipps (Me Ma) quietly and peacefully entered her eternal home in heaven.

She resided with her son V. Mac and Peggy Baldwin at 5341 Highway 86 South. She formerly lived at 508 Miami Boulevard, Durham. She was ninety four years old. She was born in Durham County to H.M. and Elizabeth Smith Weatherspoon. She was educated in Durham County Schools, a member of Calvary Baptist Church and the WMU. She was married to E.M. Baldwin and later to John M. Phipps.

In addition to her son V. Mac Baldwin and wife Peggy she is survived by one daughter Joy M. Baldwin and one step daughter Valinda Phipps both of the home, sister Margaret Cooke of Chapel Hill, brother Joe Weatherspoon of Durham two grandchildren Patti Shepherd and Craig Baldwin and wife Tracy, four great grandchildren Scott and Patrick Shepherd and Kristain and Stephen Baldwin and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husbands she was predeceased by three brothers Paul, Tyree and Claude "Buck" Weatherspoon and step mother Luti Clark Weatherspoon.

Funeral services will be Friday 3 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, Durham, conducted by Pastor James West and Rev. David Smith. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Thursday 7-8:30 p.m. at Harrelson Funeral Home and at other times at the residence, also Friday at Calvary Baptist Church Durham for one hour prior to the funeral service.

Clara Rigney

AXTON, Va. - Clara Scarce Rigney, 77, of 6909 Medical Center Road, died Tuesday, May 14, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Sept. 21, 1924, in the Whitmell community of Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of John Henry Scarce and Ella Tate Scarce.

She was married to Edward Swanny Rigney, who predeceased her. She lived in the Axton community for the past 50 years and was a member of Hollywood Baptist Church. She was employed at Hooker Furniture Company for 18 years. She had been in declining health since 1985 and had been in the hospital for two days.

Survivors include six daughters, Ella Riddle of Axton, Nancy Heath of Chatham, Shirley Eanes of the residence, Linda Barbour of Callands, Deloris Hankins of Axton, and Mary Mays of the residence; three sons, Edward Neal Rigney of Bassett, Tommy Lee Rigney of Alabama, and Gary Rigney of Axton; one sister, Marie Scarce Bean of Pelham, N.C.; 17 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

She was predecased by three brothers, Garland Emerson Scarce, William Henry Scarce, Curtis Tate Scarce; and one sister, Mary Scarce Rigney Paul.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Chapel with the Rev. Larry Davis and the Rev. J. Haywood Alcorn officiating. Interment will follow at Scarce Family Cemetery in Whitmell.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence.

Marjorie Tilson

ROXBORO, N.C. - Marjorie Agatha Tilson, 77, of 11425 Virgilina Road, died Wednesday, May 15, 2002, at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Born Aug. 30, 1924, in Rogers City, Miss., she was the daughter of John Thomas Cummings and Fannie Frances Sutherby Cummings.

She was married to James Arthur Tilson, who predeceased her. She was a retired clerk in Kingman County, Ariz.

Survivors include one sister, Shelby Jean McCullough of Roxboro; and two brothers, Dale D. Cummings of Hacienda Heights, Calif., and George D. Cummings of Long Beach, Calif.

The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Virgilina Cemetery.

Lester J. Bartee

DANVILLE, Va. - Lester J. Bartee, 83, formerly of 430 Lansbury Drive, died Wednesday, May 8, 2002, at the Veterans' Administration Hospital in Salem.

Born Oct. 5, 1918, in Danville, he was a son of James Austin Bartee and Eula Adams Bartee.

He was married to Almalia Poole Bartee, who predeceased him. He was a member of North Main Baptist Church and was a charter and life member of the DAV. He was a member of the Ballard Pruitt VFW Post 647. He was a member of the American Legion Post 325. He was a member of the Caterpillar Club, the Poquoson 124 Redman Tribe and the Civitan Club. He had worked at Charlie's Stop and Shop prior to a decline in health.

Survivors include one stepson, Pete Poole of Danville; one sister, Eleanor Allen of Danville; eight stepgrandchildren; and 12 stepgreat-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by one brother, James Aubrey Bartee.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Barker Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Leroy Clack officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park with military honors performed by the American Legion Post 325 Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Barker Funeral Home.

Alice Booth

HURT, Va. - Alice Kelley Booth, 68, of 1320 Rockford School Road, died Wednesday, May 8, 2002, at the residence.

Born Dec. 25, 1933, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Carlton Kelley and Lena Harris Kelley.

She was married to Albert Booth, who survives. She was a retired employee of the Lane Company in Altavista and was a member of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, where she was a member of the choir.

Survivors, in addition to her husband of the residence, include two daughters, Evelyne B. Jones of the residence and Vernoica Gilbert of Altavista; four sons, Carlton Booth, Norman Booth and Charles Booth, all of Hurt, and Albert Lee Both of Hanesville; three sisters, Minnie Lewis of Gretna and Texanna Robertson and Lena Mae Kelley, both of Danville; three brothers, Frank Kelley, Joe Kelley and Willie Lee Kelley, all of Danville; and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by two sons, Donnie and Frank Booth; two brothers, Fred Kelley and Richard Kelley; and one sister, Clara Crews.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Nathaniel Jones officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.

The viewing will be held from noon-7 p.m. Saturday at Miller Funeral Home in Gretna.

Silas Crews

CHATHAM, Va. - Silas Crews, 70, of 388 Hodnetts Mill Road, died Monday, May 6, 2002, at the Memorial Hospital of Martinsville/Henry County.

Born April 27, 1932, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Joe Crews and Rhoda Coles Crews.

He was employed with the Diston Company in Danville and was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the Korean War.

Survivors include three sons, Silas M. Crews Jr. of Danville, Ricky Crews of Burlington, N.C. and Charlie L. Crews of Texas; three daughters, Rochelle Crews Gwynn and Claudette Verner of Detroit and Pauline Renee Calloway of Philadelphia; one brother, Henry Crews of Danville; four sisters, Berkley Waller, Margaret Younger and Pauline Younger, all of Chatham, and Marie Younger of Flint, Mich.; and 12 grandchildren.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Mary Crews and Reva Bigelow, and four brothers, John Crews, Buster Crews, Gilmore Crews and Paul Crews.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Fairview Baptist Church with the Rev. Hubert White officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Baptist Church cemetery with military rites performed by VFW Post 4165 and DAV 46 of Altavista.

The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Friday at Miller Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence of a son, Silas Crews Jr., 260 Ferry Road in Danville.

Clara Echols

DANVILLE, Va.- Clara Swanson Echols, 81, of 228 Grant St., died Monday, May 6, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Nov. 12, 1920, in Henry County, she was a daughter of Lewis Swanson and Mary Divens Swanson.

She was married to Thurman O. Echols Sr., who survives. She was a custodian for Danville Public Schools and was a member of Union Street Missionary Baptist Church, where she was on the deaconess board, missionary society and kitchen committee.

Survivors, in addition to her husband of the residence, include three sons, the Rev. Thurman O. Echols Jr. of Axton, Herman U. Echols of the residence and the Rev. Darry O. Echols of Hampton; two daughters, Rosa E. Brown of Danville and Cloran E. Saunders of Danville; one brother, Johnnie Swanson of Baltimore; two sisters, Esther Mae Law of Danville and Sally Holley of Axton; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Loyal Baptist Church with Dr. Samuel Griffin officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.

The viewing will be held from 4-8 p.m. Friday at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home.

The family will be at the residence.

Todd Goss

SEATTLE - Michael Todd Goss, 27, died Tuesday, May 7, 2002, at the University of Washington Medical Center.

Born Feb. 3, 1975, in Eden, N.C., he was a son of Donald Lee Goss, who predeceased him, and Brenda Connock Goss, who survives.

He attended Danville Public Schools and was a graduate of Chatham High School and Danville Community College. He was a member of Woodberry Hills Baptist Church and was employed by West Mark Hotels, Division of Holland American Cruise Line, Skagway, Alaska.

Survivors, in addition to his mother of Danville, Va., include one sister, Susan Carol Goss of Danville, Va.; two brothers, Christopher Lee Goss of Danville, Va. and Donald Lee Goss Jr. of McKinney, Texas; and his maternal grandparents, William B. Connock and Helen Lundie Connock, of Danville, Va.

The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Lewis Harris officiating.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Townes Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence of his mother, 127 Third Ave. W.

Marcus ‘Jack' Jackson

DANVILLE, Va. - Marcus Leo "Jack" Jackson, 85, of 169 Beverly Road, died Tuesday, May 7, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been in declining health since 1981.

Born April 21, 1917 in Round Oak, Georgia, he was a son of Albert Earl Jackson and Myrtice McElhenny Jackson, who both predeceased him.

Mr. Jackson was married July 2, 1939 to Helen White Jackson, who survives. He lived most of his life in the Danville and Pittsylvania County areas where, prior to his retirement in 1981, he was employed as a salesperson with Roanoke City Mills, Inc. Mr. Jackson was a member of Keen Street Baptist Church where he served as Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent and was former chairman of the board of deacons.

Mr. Jackson was a member of American Legion Post 325 and attended Averett College. Mr. Jackson served as institutional director, scout master and was a member of The Order of The Arrow for the Boy Scouts.

He was a veteran of World War II in the U.S. Army 69th Infantry Headquarters Division. He was at the Battle of the Bulge and received a Bronze Star for bravery. He was a courageous, honest and brave man and a beloved father, husband and friend.

Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include one son, David Marcus Jackson of Denver, Col.; two daughters, Patty J. Shortt of Richmond, Va. and Nancy J Dameron of Martinsville, Va.; one sister, Myranell J. Burch of Chauncey, Ga.; five grandchildren, Kathryn Garrett Jackson, Carolyn Brent Jackson, Thomas Lee Shore, Ann S. Shearer and Marica Leigh Dameron; and one great-granddaughter, Laurel Shore.

He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by two sisters, Virginia J. Wrenn and Hazel J. Bartee, and two brothers, Daniel Jackson and Albert E. Jackson.

The funeral will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 10, 2002 at Keen Street Baptist Church with the Revs. Tom Brown, Tom Wright and George Rumney officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park with military honors performed by American Legion Post 325.

The family will receive friends 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Keen Street Baptist Church and at other times at the residence.
