Helen Ferguson

SARASOTA, Fla. - Helen Blanche Cardwell Ferguson, 85, of Sarasota, died Friday, May 3, 2002.

She was born February 28, 1917 in Pittsylvania County, Va.

She was married to William Ferguson. She was a graduate of Averett College in Danville, Va. and a homemaker. She was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church.

Survivors, in addition to her husband of Sarasota, include one daughter, Billie J. Caldwell of Danville, Va.; two sons, David L. Ferguson of Williston and Daniel R. Ferguson of Sarasota; one brother, Wiltshire M. Cardwell of Keeling, Va.; and two grandchildren.

The memorial service was held Sunday at St. John's United Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to Hospice of South West Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, Fla. 34238.

The National Cremation Society, Sarasota Chapter, is in charge of arrangements.

Clarence Garrett

DANVILLE, Va. - Clarence Garrett, 75, of 3316 Horseshoe Road, died Sunday, May 5, 2002 at The Memorial Hospital of Martinsville/Henry County following five months of declining health.

Born August 18, 1926, in Danville, he was a son of Benjamin Harrison Garrett and Stella Thomas Garrett.

He lived most of his life in Danville and worked as an installer for Cook Elevator for several years. He was at Blue Ridge Rehabilitation, Martinsville, for one month, Duke University Medical Center for three months and The Memorial Hospital of Martinsville/Henry County for one day. He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include one daughter, Karen Sherwood of Hurt; five sons, Gayle Garrett and Lennis Garrett, both of Marion, Ind., Dallas Garrett of Altavista, Raymond Garrett of Bassett and Clarence A. Garrett of Hurt; one sister, Elsie Crews of Danville; one brother, Carson Donald Garrett of Dry Fork; one special friend, Louise Shumate of Chatham; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by one daughter, Vivian Gail Garrett.

The graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Schoolfield Cemetery with the Rev. Dennis Johnson officiating and military honors by American Legion Dan River Post #1097 honor guard.

The family received friends from 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at Swicegood Funeral Home and will receive friends at other times at 3472 Horseshoe Road.

Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

William Ingram

DANVILLE, Va. - William H. Ingram, 62, of 205 Hamilton St., died Sunday, May 5, 2002 at the Trinity Mission of Rocky Mount, N.C.

Born July 2, 1939 in Caswell County, N.C., he was a son of Harry Lee Ingram and Millie Brandon Ingram.

He was employed by Allied Van Lines prior to disability.

Survivors include one daughter, Leslie S. Price of Danville, and three sisters, Sallie Loney of Danville, Dorothy Thornton of Jersey City, N.J. and Frances Ingram of the residence.

He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by one sister, Virginia Wilson, and one brother, James Ingram.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Smith Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Nathan Scovens officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Marcus Leo ‘Jack' Jackson

DANVILLE, Va. - Marcus Leo "Jack" Jackson, 85, of 169 Beverly Road, died Tuesday, May 7, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been in declining health since 1981.

Born April 21, 1917 in Round Oak, Georgia, he was a son of Albert Earl Jackson and Myrtice McElhenny Jackson, who both predeceased him.

Mr. Jackson was married July 2, 1939 to Helen White Jackson, who survives. He lived most of his life in the Danville and Pittsylvania County areas where, prior to his retirement in 1981, he was employed as a salesperson with Roanoke City Mills, Inc. Mr. Jackson was a member of Keen Street Baptist Church where he served as Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent and was former chairman of the board of deacons.

Mr. Jackson was a member of American Legion Post 325 and attended Averett College. Mr. Jackson served as institutional director, scout master and was a member of The Order of The Arrow for the Boy Scouts.

He was a veteran of World War II in the U.S. Army 69th Infantry Headquarters Division. He was at the Battle of the Bulge and received a Bronze Star for bravery. He was a courageous, honest and brave man and a beloved father, husband and friend.

Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include one son, David Marcus Jackson of Denver, Col.; two daughters, Patty J. Shortt of Richmond, Va. and Nancy J. Dameron of Martinsville, Va.; one sister, Myranell J. Burch of Chauncey, Ga.; five grandchildren, Kathryn Garrett Jackson, Carolyn Brent Jackson, Thomas Lee Shore, Ann S. Shearer and Marica Leigh Dameron; and one great-granddaughter, Laurel Shore.

He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by two sisters, Virginia J. Wrenn and Hazel J. Bartee, and two brothers, Daniel Jackson and Albert E. Jackson.

The funeral will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 10, 2002 at Keen Street Baptist Church with the Revs. Tom Brown, Tom Wright and George Rumney officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Keen Street Baptist Church and at other times at the residence.

Berta Morgan

DANVILLE, Va. - Berta Martin Morgan, 95, of 420 Cliff St., died Tuesday, May 7, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born March 29, 1907 in Chattanooga, Tenn., she was a daughter of Joel McPherson Martin and Carrie Mae Harmon Martin.

She was married to Carl Willie Morgan, who predeceased her. She lived most of her life in the Danville area and was a member of Community Baptist Church, where she was in the church choir. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Ann Dooley of Danville and Linda M. Owen of Keeling; two sons, Carl Eugene Morgan and Richard D. Morgan, both of Danville; one sister, Martha M. Cooper of Cleveland, Tenn.; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by three brothers, John H. Martin, Joel M. Martin and Oscar K. Martin, and four sisters, Louise Payne, Margaret Peters, Katherine Stoner and Ruth Martin.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Community Baptist Church with the Rev. James Albert officiating. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Community Baptist Church and at other times at the residence.

Nellie Pruitt

CHATHAM, Va. - Nellie Cundiff Pruitt, 72, of Oak Grove Lodge, died Monday, May 6, 2002, at Riverside Health Care.

Born June 30, 1929, she was a daughter of Albert Sidney Cundiff and Pearlie Myers Cundiff.

She was married to Virgil Pruitt, who predeceased her. She lived most of her life in Danville and worked in the nursery of The Memorial Hospital of Danville. She was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include one daughter, Barbara Manuel of Danville; one brother, the Rev. Charlie Cundiff of Danville; two stepdaughters, Virginia Newton and JoAnne Woodall, both of Danville; two stepsons, Jackie Pruitt and Bobby Pruitt, both of Danville; one grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Gilbert Hawks officiating. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family received friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Swicegood Funeral Home and received friends at other times at 70 Shumate St.

Janie Raines

DANVILLE, Va. - Janie Dodd Raines, 90, of 3960 Mount Cross Road, Danville, VA, died Sunday, May 5, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born December 24, 1911, in Pittsylvania County, VA, she was the daughter of Jones Dodd & Lillie Blair Dodd, both deceased.

She was married to Cephas H. Raines, who died in 1975. Mrs. Raines lived most of her life in the Mt. Cross community and was a member of Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church. She retired from Dan River Mills. She had been in declining health since December of last year.

Survivors include 3 sisters, Arlene Dodd Mills of Dry Fork, VA, Frances Dodd Raines of Danville, VA, and Patti Walton of Sandy Hook, VA; special friend, Florence Holley of Dry Fork, VA; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by 2 sisters, Anna Raines and Clara Collins; and 4 brothers, Paul Dodd, Reginald Dodd, Bobby Dodd, and Silas Dodd.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, 2002, at Danville Memorial Gardens Mausoleum by the Rev. Wayne Crews. Burial will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family received friends Tuesday, May 7, 2002 from 7-8:30 p.m. at Swicegood Funeral Home and will receive friends at other times at the home of Arlene Mills, 1725 Hill Creek Road off the Mount Cross Road.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church, Mt. Cross Road, Danville, VA Phone 799-8789 or Mt. Cross Volunteer Fire Department.

Harry Russell

DANVILLE, Va. - Harry Vincent Russell, 48, of 130 Midland St., died Sunday, May 5, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Jan. 2, 1954, in Danville, he was a son of Harry J. Russell, who predeceased him, and Louellen Roberston Russell, of the residence, who survives.

He was a member of White Rock Missionary Baptist Church and was employed for 11 years as a custodian at Schoolfield Elementary School.

He is survived by one sister, Brenda R. Farmer of Danville.

The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at White Rock Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Walter Tinsley officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Lois Stierwalt

NORFOLK, Va. - Lois Mae Stierwalt, of 8529 Millard St., died Sunday, May 5, 2002 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Born in Danville, she was a daughter of William M. Campbell and Mabel New Campbell.

She was married Dec. 10, 1949, to Irvin Lee "Bob" Stierwalt, of the residence, who survives.

She lived in Sanford, Fla. before moving in 1963 to Norfolk. She was a homemaker and member of Ocean View Assembly of God Church.

Survivors include two sons, Michael Allen Stierwalt of Norfolk and Irvin Lee "J.R." Stierwalt Jr. of Kannapolis, N.C.; one daughter, Patty Stierwalt Hodges of Mocksville, N.C.; three sisters, Dorothy C. Dickerson of Virginia Beach, Gloria C. White of Fitchburg, Mass. and Rachel C. Emerson of Dry Fork; two brothers, Lester Otis Campbell of Danville and William Ray Campbell of Blairs; and four grandchildren.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Richard Andrew Campbell and Walter Douglas Campbell.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. J. B. Whitfield officiating. Interment will follow at Schoolfield Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and at other times at the residence of her sister, Rachel C. Emerson, 548 Tobacco Road, Dry Fork.

The family suggests memorials be made to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice House, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27103.

Robert Forest Angel

PROVIDENCE, N.C. - Robert Forest Angel, 74, of 2429 Seamster Road, died Thursday, Sept. 5, 2002, at his residence.

Born July 21, 1928, in Winston-Salem, he was the son of Robert Lee and Essie Fulp Angel.

He worked for 44 years at Universal Leaf Tobacco Company and retired as Senior Vice President of J.P. Taylor Tobacco Company. He was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by his wife, Romaine Sheek Angel of the home; a daughter, Lisa Angel-Shelton of Providence; a son, Steve Angel of Avon, Conn.; two sisters, India Crow of Winston-Salem and Millie Transou of Clemmons; and two grandchildren.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Volgers Main Street Chapel with interment to follow in the Crews United Methodist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Saturday at Volgers Main Street Chapel.

V. Herman Booth

RINGGOLD, Va. - Virgil Herman Booth departed this life after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer on September 6, 2002 on the family farm where he lived and was born June 18, 1919. He was surrounded by his loving family. He was a son of the late George W. Booth and Beanie Henderson Booth. Mr. Booth was a longtime farmer and carpenter. He was a member of Rock Springs United Methodist Church.

He was predeceased by a brother, Ospha Henderson; a sister, Rosa McCormick; a son-in-law, James Thomas Beggarly; and a beloved grandson, Alan Dale Beggarly.

Survivors include his loving wife of 62 years, Hilda Thornton Booth; two daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce Beggarly Morrisett and husband Peter of Kingsport, TN., and Lois B. Keller and husband Beecher of High Point, NC; one grandson and wife, Larry and Linnae Keller of Ringgold, Va.; one granddaughter and husband, Angie and Tom Esbenshade of Lancaster, PA; and six great-grandchildren, Joseph, Joshua and Holly Keller of Ringgold, VA, Nathan, Noah and Katelyn Esbenshade of Lancaster, PA.

Mr. Booth is also survived by one brother, Garland H. Booth of Ringgold, VA, and one sister, Marjorie B. Barker of Greensboro, NC.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday from the graveside in the Booth Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence, 7125 Kentuck Road, Ringgold, Va.

The family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Kentuck Vol. Fire Department, 200 Ringgold Church Road, Ringgold VA 24586 or The Mount Hermon Vol. Fire Department, 4268 Franklin Turnpike, Danville, Va. 24540

Margaret Arrington 'Peggy' Chears

DANVILLE, Va. - Margaret Arrington "Peggy" Chears, formerly of 156 Forestdale Drive, Apartment 210, died Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.

She was born in Danville on May 11, 1931, a daughter of the late William Crockett Chears and Frances Westbrook Chears.

Miss Chears attend public schools in Charlotte, N.C. and was a graduate of Salem College in Winston-Salem, N.C.

She was employed eight years for the Extension Division for North Carolina State University and worked seven years as executive secretary for The Governor's Coordinating Committee on Aging.

Miss Chears returned to Danville in the early 1960s and had taught school at The Mount Hermon Elementary School. She later became a substitute teacher for the City of Danville Public Schools. She also taught at Danville Community College and had worked at The Alumni Office at Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Va. Miss Chears was a member of The Main Street United Methodist Church.

Surviving are a nephew: William Crockett Chears III of Dallas, TX. One niece: Catherine Chears Sonnier and her husband, Richard of Dallas, TX. Two great-nieces: Emily Arrington Sonnier and Grace Alexander Sonnier both of Dallas, TX.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 7, 2002 at 10 A.M. from the graveside at Mountain View Cemetery by The Reverand Gary Milstead.
