Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Clarence O. Childress

JERSEY CITY, N.J. - Clarence O. Childress, 59, died Monday, Sept. 2, 2002, at Greenville Hospital.

Born March 24, 1943, in Halifax County, Va., he was the son of Emily Childress and Tom Childress Sr., both deceased.

He is survived by a wife, Nannie Childress; a daughter, Carol Kearney; a son, Clarence Childress, all of Jersey City; five sisters, Louise Bailey of Jersey City, Martha Ferrell, Annie Wade, both of Englewood, Ruby Wesson of Lawrenceville, Va. and Ruth Crite of Brown Summit, N.C.; three brothers, Robert Childress Sr. of Halifax, Va., Leonard Childress of Jersey City and Ernest Childress of Grove City, Pa.; and four grandchildren.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Pleasant C.M.E. Church in Halifax, Va. with the Rev. Evon Bush and Sandra Young officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

The remains will lie in state one hour prior to service.

The family will receive friends at the Childress family residence, Vernon Hill, Va.

Rev. Herman Lee Jefferson

PELHAM, N.C. - Rev. Herman Lee Jefferson, 51, of 2150 Old U.S. 29 Highway, died Wed., Sept. 4, 2002 at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C.

Born June 12, 1951 in Pittsylvania County, Va., he was a son of the late James Alred Jefferson and Mary Hall Jefferson, who survives. He was married to Sheila Graves Jefferson.

He was an Associate Pastor of the Silver Creek Baptist Church; and had been employed by the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

In addition of his wife and mother, his survivors include: two daughters, Kristal Jefferson and Tinesha Jefferson of Danville, Va.; two sons, Corey Jefferson of Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas and Jeremy Jefferson of the residence; two sisters; Stella Gray and Mozelle Willard, both of Danville, Va.; three brothers, Stanford Jefferson and Alvin Jefferson,, both of Dry Fork, Va., and Roy Jefferson of Baltimore, Md. In addition, there are a host of other relatives and friends.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 2150 Old U.S. Highway 29, Pelham.

Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. from the Silver Creek Baptist Church by Rev. Booker George. Interment follows in the Highland Burial Park Cemetery. Military Honors will be provided by the American Legion Post 29 Honor Guard.

Alfred Lee Franklin Smith

WINSTON-SALEM, Va. - Alfred (Al) Lee Franklin Smith left for an early tee time Friday morning, September 6, 2002 with some old Pals.

He was born in Winston-Salem, N.C. June 29, 1914, the son of William Edgar Smith and Mary Ellen Bradford Smith. Alfred was one of 12 children.

He was married to the late Lena Ruth Chamberlain Smith, also of Winston-Salem and is survived by one daughter, Penny Hedgecock and husband, Richard and one grandson, Harry Davis IV. Mrs. Tommy Culler of Winston-Salem is his only surviving sister.

Al was a lifetime member of the P.G.A. He began his golf career caddying at Forsyth Country Club. His first head professional job was in Martinsville, Virginia prior to World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy for 4 years. After joining the P.G.A. Tour from 1946 until 1950, AL took the Head Pro job at Danville Country Club in Danville, Virginia where he remained until 1969. He then returned to Kernersville, N.C. where he helped build Pine Tree Golf Course. He remained there as Head Pro until 1990 when he retired from active employment.

There will be a memorial service Monday, September 9 at 11:00 a.m at Volger & Sons Main Street Chapel, Winston-Salem. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Any one desiring to come by Al's home are cordially invited.

Lorraine Wynn Vernon

DANVILLE, Va. - Lorraine Wynn Vernon, formerly of 119 Southland Court, died Thursday, Sept. 5, 2002 at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.

She was born in Danville, Dec. 26, 1917, a daughter of the late Jessie Vernon Wynn and Rosa Weatherman Wynn.

She was a member of The First Baptist Church, The Homemakers Club and former member of The Wednesday Club. She was a past co-manager of The Body Shop Exercise Studio; and was a graduate of George Washington High School and Averett University.

She was married to the late C. Miller Vernon who died on March 21, 1995. She was predeceased by one sister, Gaynell Wynn Smith.

Surviving are one son, Charles Miller Vernon, Jr. of Danville; and one daughter, Kay Vernon Gleber of Danville; three sisters: Lillian Wynn Yates and Clarice Wynn Harris, both of Danville, and Margie Wynn Schwartz of Silver Spring, Md.; and three grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Sunday from Townes Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Dr. Joey Faucette. Interment will be private.

The family will receive friends at Townes Funeral Home Saturday 6-8:30 p.m. and at other times at the residence, 119 Southland Court.

Virginia Lloyd Waldie

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Virginia Lloyd Waldie, 67, of 334-B Woodcrest Apts., Hamilton Boulevard, died Sept. 6, 2002 at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Born March 6, 1935, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of William Archer Lloyd and Ada Nola Wilkins Lloyd.

She was a member of Providence Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by two daughters, Sandra W. Glass of Halifax and Karen W. Puryear of Clarksville; one son, Russell Grant Waldie of Scottsburg; three sisters, Helen Lloyd of Halifax, Dallas Rice of Florida, and Florence Wilmoth of Richmond; three brothers, Lacy Lloyd of Richmond, Saford Lloyd of Arlington and Wayne Lloyd of Powhatan; one granddaughter; five step grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was predeceased by one son, Danny Vaden Waldie; two grandsons, William and David Lee Moneymaker; four brothers and one sister.

The graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Providence Presbyterian Church Cemetery with the Rev. Jeff Jones officiating.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Powell Funeral Home.

Eva Scearce Bateman

BROSVILLE, Va. - Eva Scearce Bateman, 95, of 556 Willow Briar Lane died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at her residence.

Born Nov. 10, 1906, she was the daughter of the late Whitt T. Scearce and Gracie Dishman Scearce.

She was married to Samuel Oakley Bateman, who predeceased her on May 1, 1996.

She had lived her entire life in the Brosville community and was a lifelong member of Brosville United Methodist Church.

She was a homemaker and enjoyed working with the youth of her church.

Survivors include one daughter, JoAnne Bateman Adams of Brosville; two sons, Vincent Bateman of Rocky Mount and Bobby S. Bateman of Danville; one brother, Marion I. Scearce of Florida; and one sister, Mary J. Gentry of Wake Forest, N.C.; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Vincent Harold Bateman and Sammy Bateman; four sisters, Delma Chrisman, Lula Rodden, Alma Hutchins and Annie Rice; two brothers, Emory Scearce and Jesse Scearce; and by one great-grandson.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel, with the Revs. Ed Roland and Daryl Joyce officiating.

Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and at others times at the residence.

The family suggests that memorials be made to Hospice Support Services, P.O. Box 2713, Danville, VA, 24543; or to the Brosville United Methodist Church Building Fund, 12648 Martinsville Hwy., Danville, VA, 24541.

Martin Luther Hardy Jr.

DANVILLE, Va. - Martin Luther Hardy Jr., 66, of 136 Hayess Court, died Friday, Nov. 1, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born March 11, 1936, he was the son of Martin Luther Hardy Sr. and Eva Wilkinson Hardy, who predeceased him.

Hardy was a life-long resident of Danville. He was a graduate of Brosville High School and had been employed by Dan River Mills, Inc.; W. Henry Hardy Oil Co. and in 1966 began driving for Trailways Bus Co. He was associated with Davis and Hardy Christmas Trees for many years.

He also was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church, a charter member of the Westover Fire Department and a member of Danville Aeromodelors.

Survivors include his wife, Juanita W. Hardy, of the residence; two daughters, Freda H. Carter and Julia Puryear, both of Danville; two sons, Martin L. Hardy III and Timothy E. Hardy, both of Danville; a brother, Russell W. Hardy of Axton; and nine grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel, with the Rev. William Blalock officating.

The family will receive friends 5-6:30 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel.

The family suggests that memorials be sent to the Danville Life Saving Crew, 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, VA, 24541, or to the charity of their choice.

John Thomas Rankine Sr.

MARTINSVILLE, Va. - John Thomas Rankine Sr., 57, of Ridgeway, died Oct. 26, 2002, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.

Born in England on March 27, 1945, he was the son of the late Thomas Alfred Rankine and the late Violet Olden Rankine.

He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War and was the former commander of VFW Post #1179 in Fort Meade, Fla.

Survivors include: his wife, Alma Marie Rankine of the residence; one daughter, Alma Jean Bradford of Eden, N.C.; two sons, John W. Pruitt of Reidsville, N.C. and Stevie R. Pruitt of Asheboro, N.C.; two brothers, Robert Rankine of Danville and William Rankine of Florida; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, John Thomas Rankine Jr, on Sept. 18.

The funeral will be held at 10-11 a.m. Monday at Friendly Christian Church, following the visitation. Pastor Don Forrester will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Linda Lane Walker

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. -Linda Lane Walker, 55, of 603 Greenway Dr., South Boston, died Thursday, Oct. 31, 2002, at Duke Medical Center.

Born on March 4, 1947, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Eugene Clyde Moore Lane and Arlene Perkins Grimes. Walker was a member of Grace Baptist Church and also attended Revelation Baptist Church

Survivors include her husband, Wesley W. Walker, of the residence; one daughter, Tasha Snead Griffin of Scottsburg; one step-daughter, Stephanie Michele Walker of Scottsburg; one step-son, James Beckett Walker of South Boston; one brother, Roger Lane of Greensboro, N.C.; two grandchildren and four step-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Revelation Baptist Church, with the Rev. Rudolph Jacobs officating. Interment will follow at Oakland Cemetery, Scottsburg.

The family asks that memorials be sent to the Halifax County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 183, South Boston, VA, 24592 or to the Halifax County Cancer Association, P.O. Box 875, South Boston, VA, 24592.

Alice Hazel Waller

DANVILLE, Va. - Alice Hazel Waller, 90, of 975 Piney Forest Road died Thursday, Oct. 31, 2002, at Riverside Health Care Center.

Born in Manteo, N.C., she was the daughter of George E. Pruden and Maggie N. Harrison.

She was employed as a registered nurse at Winslow Hospital and Danville Memorial Hospital. She was the proprietor of Hazel Waller's Nursery during the 1950s.

Survivors include one daughter, Janet Faye Waller of Austin, Texas; two brothers, George Edward Pruden II, of Laurel, Md. and Paul Pruden of Tidewater.

A funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at Trinity Baptist Church with the Rev. John Anderson officiating. Burial will follow in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

Howard Anderson

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Howard Taft Anderson, 89, of 3185 Virgie Cole Road, died Tuesday, July 9, 2002, at Berry Hill Nursing Home.

Born Sept. 13, 1912, in Halifax County, he was the son of Walter Claude Anderson and Virginia Hudson Anderson.

He was married to Jeanette Owen Anderson, who survives. He was a retired farmer.

Survivors, in addition to his wife of South Boston, include one son, Howard O. Anderson of South Boston; three daughters, Mary Synan of RIchmond, Betsy Smith of Roanoke, and Gayle Saunders of Smith Mountain Lake; one sister, Helen Burnett of South Boston; one brother, Cecil Anderson of Halifax; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by one grandson, Grey Neal; one brother, Hudson Anderson; and four sisters, Maggie Osborne, Eunice Temple, Evie Harris, Ella Headspeth, and Janey Davis.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jack Stewart officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Brooks Funeral Home.

Cecil Edgar Barker

Eden, N.C. - Cecil Edgar Barker, 75, of 1034 Cascade Ave., Eden, died Monday, July 8th 2002 at his home. The service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 10, 2002 at Fair Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Mount Hermon Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Barker was born in Henry County formerly employed by Wayne Jones Ford. He was an adopted member of the Solid Rock Baptist Church. He is survived by his: Wife, Betty C. Barker of 36 years (of the home); Sons, Cecil Barker and his wife, Mary of Eden, NC, Dale Barker and his wife, Lisa of Eden, NC; Daughters, Judy Stanfield of Ruffin, NC, Jeanette Shorter and her husband, Robert of Bassett, VA; Step-son, Wayne Harris and his wife, Lera of Eden, NC; Brothers, Walter Barker of Rutherfordton, NC, David Barker of Eden, NC, Doc Barker of Eden, NC, Belvin Barker of Eden, NC, Hugh Barker of Eden, NC; Sisters, Shelby Axsom of Eden, NC, Shirley Carter of Eden, NC, Noney Rowe of Roanoke, VA, Mattie Walker of Dallas, NC; 12 Grandchildren and 5 Great Grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jake and Mary Barker; Son, Ricky Barker and brothers, James, Benjamin and Jake Barker.

Visitation will be 7 until 9 p.m. Tuesday at Fair Funeral Home. Other times at the home, 1034 Cascade Avenue, Eden. Fair Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Barbara Cobb

JAMESTOWN, N.C. - Barbara (Bobbie) Turner Cobb, 66, died Sunday, July 7, 2002 at High Point Regional Hospital.

The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 10, 2002 at Jamestown Presbyterian Church. Interment will follow at Guilford Memorial Park.

She was predeceased by her father, James Eston Turner and her brother, James E. Turner, Jr.

Mrs. Cobb was a member and elder and choir member at Jamestown Presbyterian Church. She taught school for 30 years in Guilford County. She was a counselor at Southwest High School and influenced many young peoples lives. She was also a volunteer at the High Point Regional Hospital.

Mrs. Cobb is survived by two sons, Joe Carroll Clayton, II and wife Melody of Thomasville and Keith Turner Clayton and fiance, Rhonda Engstrom of Jamestown; mother, Doris Amos Turner of Danville, VA; sister, Mary Ann Cook and husband, William H. Cook of Bay Shore, NY; grandchildren, Brandon Clayton, Sage Dakota Clayton, Maggie Pope, Carley Bullman and Dennis Bullman.

The family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m., Tuesday, July 9, 2002 at the Hanes-Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel and other times at Mrs. Cobbs residence.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Ronald McDonald House 419 Hawthorne Rd., Winston-Salem, NC 27103 or to Jamestown Presbyterian Church 1804 Guilford College Rd., Jamestown, NC 27282.
