John Brown Jr., age 73, of Powhatan, Va., departed this life Friday, September 7, 2001 in Richmond.

He is survived by his wife, Frances Lee Brown; two daughters, Gayle Y. Robinson and Queen E. Moore; four grandchildren, one great-grandchild; three sisters, Virginia Crawley, Leenell Owens, and Queen Walker; two sons-in-law, Edward Moore and Kenneth Robinson; five brothers-in-law; two sisters-in-law, two nieces, four nephews, eight great-nieces, seven great-nephews; and a host of great-great-nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

His remains rest at Marian Gray Thomas Funeral Home of Cumberland, where the family will receive friends Tuesday from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, 1 p.m. at Mt. Pero Baptist Church, Powhatan. Rev. Melvin Woodson officiating with interment in the church cemetery.

Paul Reed Sr.

Paul Reed Sr., age 87, of Amelia, died Sunday, September 9, 2001 at his residence.

He is survived by daughter, Mable Archer and Alice Pegram; sons, John, George, Robert, Patrick, Raymond and Benjamin Reed; 28 grandchildren, 56 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Helen Epps; sons-in-law, Andrew Archer Jr. and Chester Pegram; daughters-in-law, Hazel, Pinkie, Doris, Jennifer and Viola Reed; many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services Thursday, 1 p.m., Little Bethel Baptist Church, Ameila, Rev. Lorenzo Hill, Pastor. Burial in the church cemetery. Arrangements by V.Y. Scott Funeral Home, Amelia.

Ella Mae Hall

Ella Mae Hall, age 94, of Amelia, died on Sept. 10, 2001.

The widow of the late Elwood Frances Hall, she is survived by her sons, Charles, Howard, and Edward Hall, all of Chesterfield; daughters Shirley Dobbs of Amelia, and Doris Reams of Woodbridge; her brothers Thomas Simpson of Chesterfield, James Simpson of Powhatan, Lloyd Simpson of Florida, Harvey Simpson of Appomattox; her sister, Virginia Shiflett of Richmond; 11 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Wed. at 1 p.m. at the Hillsman-Hix Funeral Home with burial in Red Lane Baptist Cemetery, Powhatan. Visiting at the Hillsman-Hix Funeral Home, 16409 Court St. Amelia, 2-4 and 7-8:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Contributions may be made to either the Piedmont Baptist Church Building Fund or the Amelia Rescue Squad.

Virginia Peoples Davis

Virginia "Ginny" Peoples Davis of Powhatan passed away Wednesday, September 12, 2001.

She was the widow of Rudolph Davis and is survived by her daughter, Betty Clark; a brother and his wife, Frank and Anne Peoples; one niece, three nephews, several great-nieces and nephews. Mrs. Davis was a past Matron of Holly Chapter OES and Virginia Court No. 1 O.ofA.

A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Monday, September 17, at Powhatan United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends following the service. Interment private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Powhatan United Methodist Church Building Fund.

Nannie Lee Robinson

Departed this life Wednesday, September 12, 2001, Mrs. Nannie Lee Robinson of Amelia, Va.

She is survived by 14 children, Deacon Roosevelt (Dorothy) Robinson, Gracie Butler, William (Regina) Robinson, Hattie Robinson, Angelina Whitted, Ernestine Crews, Marion (Linwood) Royal, Ruth (Richard) Washington, Kathleen (Robert) Jones, Jacqueline (Fletcher) Perry, Deacon Louis (Carolyn) Robinson, Joyce (Joseph) Clay, Nannie Marie (Purcell) Owens, all of Amelia, and Delores Patrick, Baltimore, Md.; one brother-in-law, Deacon William H. Robinson, Amelia; one daughter-in-law, Ellen Robinson, Richmond; 51 grandchildren, 73 great-grandchildren and 85 great-great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Remains rest at Michael W. Hawkes Funeral Home, Rt. 360, Amelia, where the family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Monday, September 17 at 2 p.m. from Promise Land Baptist Church, Amelia. Interment church cemetery.

Grover E. Hamilton

Grover E. "Bunn" Hamilton, 75, of Powhatan, widower of Blanche Webb Hamilton, died September 14, 2001.

He is survived by his stepson, Gene D. Utley of Powhatan; one brother, Forrest Hamilton of Powhatan; two sisters, Betty Hamilton of Texas and Marjorie Stagg of Chesterfield; one grandson, Richard Utley; and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Bennett & Barden Funeral Home, 3215 Anderson Hwy. (Rt. 60), Powhatan. Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in the Old Powhatan Baptist Church, Powhatan. Interment church cemetery. Richard Kemper Putney

Richard Kemper Putney, 67, died Friday, September 14, 2001 at Johnston-Willis Hospital, Richmond.

Born in Virginia, he was the son of the late Duke A. and Margaret Turner Putney. Putney was a member of the Hopewell Moose. He is survived by his wife, Louise McCullough Putney; five children, Dory Putney, Douglas Putney, Kimberly Whitaker, Deborah Birdsong and Eddie Birdsong; 10 grandchildren; a brother, Lee A. Putney; and a sister, Mrs. Robert (Sis) Young.

Graveside services will be conducted Monday, September 17, 2001 at 2 p.m. in Sunset Memorial Park, Chester. The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon from 2 to 4 p.m. at E. Alvin Small Funeral Home, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights. Family and friends wishing to attend the service should assemble at the gravesite.

Pearl B. White

Pearl B. White, age 82, of Amelia, slipped away from us suddenly on Saturday, September 15, 2001; a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her husband of 65 years John E. "Phil" White; five children, John Nelson and wife Doris of Amelia, Wallace E. of Stuarts Draft, Va., Phyllis Wright of Richmond, Vickie and husband H.C. Collins of Deputy, In., and Gary B. and wife Lucy of Richmond; 10 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents Simon Peter and Victoria Angeline Beverley. She was a faithful member of Piedmont Baptist Church for 48 years.

A chapel service will be held on Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Hillsman-Hix Funeral Home, 16409 Court St., with interment to follow at Pine Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be on Monday from 7-9 p.m. Contributions may be made in her memory to Piedmont Baptist Church.

Leonard H. Maxie Jr.

Leonard H. Maxie Jr., 79, of Richmond, died on Sunday, September 16, 2001.

He is survived by Louise Maxie, his loyal and dedicated wife of 58 years; three children, Leonard H. Maxie III of Powhatan, Welford Maxie of Chesterfield, and Helen Maxie of New York; as well as four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd. and where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday. Interment will follow at 1 p.m. in Westview Cemetery, Farmville, Va.

Virginia Owen Miller

Virginia Owen Miller, age 74, of Richmond, died Sunday, September 16, 2001.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Henry R. and Gayle L. Miller, and Heth O. and Ann Y. Miller; a brother, Heth Owen Jr.; three grandchildren, Ti Miller, Hank Miller, and Ellie Miller.

The family will receive visitors at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave. from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Quantry Cabel Pembelton Jr.

Quantry Cabel "Sam" Pembelton Jr., age 76, of Amelia, died on Sunday, September 16, 2001.

A retired tobacco farmer, he was born in Cumberland County. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Overby Pembelton. He is survived by one son, Q. C. Pembelton III, of Amelia; three daughters, Janet P. Joyce of Rice, Va., and Beverly P. Dunnavant and Fay P. Booth, both of Farmville; six grandchildren, Morgan Pembelton, Katie Joyce, Amanda J. Gallagher, Greg Dunnavant, Scott Pembelton and Jason Booth; and one sister, Cora P. Grey of Rice.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m.on Wednesday September 19, at Sandy Creek Baptist Church, with interment to follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 7-9 p.m. at Hillsman-Hix Funeral Home, 16409 Court St. Contributions may be made to your favorite charity.

Henry D. Vaughan

Henry D. Vaughan died Sunday, September 16, 2001.

He was born on October 15, 1910 at "Deer Lawn" in Amelia County where he lived and farmed all his life. He was a charter member of the Amelia Lions Club since 1955 and was an Elder and Chairman of the Cemetery Board of the Amelia Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by a brother, T. Carter Vaughan of Westchester, Penn.; a niece, Gail Vaughan Higgins; nephews, John H. Vaughan, Thomas C. Vaughan and John W. Vaughan III; and his great-nephews, John W. Vaughan IV, Logan M. Vaughan, Michael Higgins, Christopher Higgins and Jesse Vaughan.

Graveside funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 19, in the Amelia Presbyterian Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Hamner-McMillian Funeral Home in Blackstone. Noah Nelson

Noah "Gip" Nelson, 84, of Powhatan, died September 18, 2001.

He is survived by his wife, Judith H. Nelson; two daughters, Sharon N. Berger of Amherst, Robin G. Capps of Cumberland; two sisters, Kathleen Speas of Farmville and Beck Travis of Farmville.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday in the Muddy Creek Baptist Church, Powhatan. Interment Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Cumberland. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or Muddy Creek Baptist Church Building Fund.

Margaret Mondy

Departed this life Thursday, September 20, 2001, Mrs. Margaret Hill Mondy of Richmond, formerly of Jetersville, Va.

She is survived by three daughters, Veronica Swann, Betty Wilkerson, and Sandra Cole; two sons, King Geronimo Davis and Lawrence Davis Jr.; two sisters, Agnes Scruggs and Emma Freeman; one brother, Frank Hill; one son-in-law, two daughters-in-law, one sister-in-law, two brothers-in-law, 13 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, including a devoted friend, Edward Smith.

Edith King Shredl

Edith King Shredl, 92, a retired bookkeeper, died Thursday, September 20, 2001.

She was the daughter of the late Charles E. and Evelyn S. King. She was the widow of Anton B. Shredl and preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters. She is survived by two sons, Eugene and Otto Shredl, both of Chesterfield County; one daughter, Mrs. Evelyn Childress of Amelia County; a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Graveside service will be held 3 p.m. Saturday in Blandford Cemetery, Rev. McDowell officiating. The family is being served by the Chesterfield Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son.

Milton Leroy Ruffin Sr.

Milton Leroy Ruffin Sr., devoted father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, entered into eternal life on Saturday, September 22, 2001.

He was the son of the late Mabel and Wingfield Ruffin and the stepson of Mary E. Ruffin. He was a member of the Red Lodge and Hill Top Hunt Clubs and a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge. He leaves to cherish his memory one daughter, Cassandra Ruffin; three sons, Milton Jr., Erwin Mellette and Kelvin Ruffin; four grandchildren, Tatineesha, Stephan, Sharday, and devoted grandson, Calvin Jarrett; four great-grandchildren; five sisters, Jean, Jane and Ruth Ruffin, Helen Washington and Sally Smoot; three brothers, John, Gilbert and Anthony Ruffin; two daughters-in-law, Charlene and Stephanie Ruffin; four sisters-in-law, two brothers-in-law, 28 nieces and nephews, a host of other relatives and friends.

Ernest Moses Pitt Jr., of Amelia, passed away. He was a retired Philip Morris USA employee, an Air Force veteran, and the husband of Delores Robert Pitt.

Joseph A. Samson, 65, of Powhatan, a retired employee of Lord Corp. in Erie, Pa., a Navy veteran, husband of Marilyn M. Samson, passed away. Details will follow.

H.F. Japp

H.F. Japp, 81, died Sunday, September 23, 2001 at the Amelia Nursing Center.

He is survived by a daughter, Ruth Harrison, Virginia; son, Robert Japp, North Carolina; his friend and companion of 13 years, Dorothy Seay and her family. We love and miss you deeply. God bless you always. Mr. Japp was a retired herdsman for Curles Neck Dairy.

Remains rest at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave. Graveside services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at Dale Memorial Park.

Lizzie Short Adams Norton

Lizzie Short Adams Norton quietly departed this life September 23, 2001, in the home of her daughter, Charlotte Watts.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Taylor Washington Adams of 50 years of marriage; her son, Larry James Adams; and second husband, Noel Norton. She is survived by her 14 children, Frances Lukins of Altavista, Va., Iva Harper of Lynchburg, Va., Lenora Copal of Crewe, Va., John T. Adams of Keysville, Edna Foster of Chase City, Eloise Dalton of Burkeville, Gladys Borup of Orem, Utah, William B. Adams of Danville, Robert A. Adams of Powhatan, Calvin D. Adams of Newport News, Jewel Queensburry of Mapleton, Utah, Mary A. Gormus of Farmville, Charlotte Watts of Burkeville, Phyllis A. Roark of Crewe, and Nancy L. Roark of Crewe; a special granddaughter that she raised, 67 grandchildren, 142 great-grandchildren and 50 great-great-grandchildren.

Lizzie was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Burkeville Ward, where her funeral will be held Thursday, September 27, at 2 p.m., with burial in Trinity Memorial Gardens, Rice, Va. The family will receive family and friends Wednesday night from 7 to 9 p.m. at Lizzie's home on Namozine St., Burkeville, where the body will be until time of funeral. Browning Funeral Home of Keysville in charge of arrangements.

John Hoover Short

John Hoover "Papa" Short, 72, of Powhatan, passed away September 23, 2001.

He is survived by wife of 47 years, Helen Juanita Short; three daughters, Carol Wilkinson and her husband, Charles, Jackie Amos, Kim Short and her fiance, Mark Baldwin; two sons, Wayne Short and his wife, Dee, and Darrell Short; three brothers, Noah, Paul and Herbert Short; two sisters, Nancy Hess, Edna Mae Rasnake; nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and close friends.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Bennett & Barden Funeral Home, 3215 Anderson Hwy. (Rt. 60), Powhatan and where services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday. Interment Full Gospel Holiness Church Cemetery, Powhatan. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Powhatan Volunteer Rescue Squad.

Richard A. Childress

Richard A. Childress, age 83, of Amelia, died on September 24, 2001.

He was preceded in death by his wife Hattie and his son Earl Mann. He is survived by his sons, Wayne Mann of Louisa and Bobby Mann of Jetersville; his sisters, Frances Childress Jones of Amelia, and Sally May Hart and Martha Green, both of Louisa; 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 7-9 p.m. at the Hillsman-Hix Funeral Home, 16409 Court St., Amelia. A chapel service will be held at the funeral home on Thursday at 11 a.m., with burial to follow at Dale Memorial Park in Chesterfield.

Theodore B. McCann

Theodore B. McCann, 85, passed from this life to be with the Lord on September 24, 2001.

He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Irene W. McCann; one daughter, Jean M. Jackson and her husband, James N. Jackson of Powhatan; one granddaughter, Sherie J. Robben and her husband, J. Wayne Robben of King William County; stepgreat-grandson, Joseph W. Robben Jr. of Caroline County; and a devoted nephew, Alan C. McCann and his wife, Edith McCann of Chesterfield. Mr. McCann was a long-time member of Central Baptist Church and a friend of Powhatan Christian Fellowship. To those who knew and loved him, his memory will never grow old. Gone from home, not our hearts.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Huguenot Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Road. William Byrd Harrison III

William Byrd Harrison III, 74, of Richmond, died Tuesday, September 25, 2001.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Nancy Pope Harrison; daughter, Margaret Harrison Hairfield and her husband, Richard of Richmond; daughter, Denise Harrison Miller and her husband, Gary of Powhatan; son, William Randolph Harrison and his wife, Paula of Wyckoff, N.J.; five grandchildren; his sisters, Evelyn Byrd Harrison of New York City and Elizabeth Harrison Ormes of Richmond.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Huguenot Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Road. Funeral services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Michael's Episcopal Church. Interment Friday 12 noon at the Virginia Veterans Cemetery, Amelia, Va. Roy Epps

Roy Epps, 49, of New York City, N.Y., formerly of Amelia, Va., went home to be with the Lord on September 29, 2001.

He is survived by three sons, Jamie, Eric and Roy; eight sisters, Hattie Laster of New York, Frances Booker, Bertha McGhee, Eartha Woolridge and Janice Epps, all of Richmond, Va., Doris Johnson of Jetersville, Va., Cynthia Brown and Gail Laster of Crewe, Va.; four brothers, Rev. James Epps of Jetersville, Va., Clarence Epps of Farmville, Va., Bernard Epps of Fayetteville, N.C. and Robert Booker of New York; host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday, October 6, 2001, from the Promise Land Baptist Church, Amelia, Va., with the Reverend Bernard Ford officiating. Interment church cemetery. Ruth G. Gillespie

Ruth G. Gillespie, 81, of Amelia, died September 29, 2001. She was preceded in death by her husband, George R. Gillespie. She is survived by her daughter, Judith W. Woodruff; and son-in-law, Richard; two brothers, four sisters, four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull St. Rd., where the family will receive friends Monday from 6 to 8 p.m., and where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, with interment in Dale Memorial Park. Edgell E. McMillion

Edgell E. "PaPa" McMillion, 71, of Amelia and formerly of Richmond, passed away on Sunday, September 30, 2001.

He was born in Nettie, W.Va. to the late Tressie and Sheldon McMillion. He leaves to cherish his memories his wife, Dorothy McMillion; three daughters, Rhonda Pippen, Jacquelyn Myers and Kimberly McFee; one son, Jamie Dickerson; his sister, Macel Herbert of West Virginia; and seven grandchildren.

His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday and where funeral services will be held 12:30 p.m. Wednesday. Interment to follow in Dale Memorial Park.

Kathleen S. Webb

Kathleen S. "Kay" Webb, 67, of Powhatan, died September 30, 2001. She is survived by her husband, Percy S. Webb Jr.; one son, Dean G. Webb; one daughter, Darlene W. Martin, both of Powhatan; one brother, Jack P. Sullivan of Rockville; six grandchildren, Neal, Tyler, Eric, Patrick and Karen.

Gideon I. Yoder

Gideon I. Yoder of Amelia died peacefully at Mountain View Nursing Home on October 3, 2001.

He was born on April 10, 1921 in Springs, Pa. and is the son of the late Ira and Susie (Brenneman) Yoder. Gideon is survived by his wife, Elizabeth (Miller) Yoder; seven sons and two daughters, Allen Yoder and wife, Michelle of Canton, Ohio. Alvin Yoder and wife, Clara of Aroda, Lydia Yoder and husband, Ivan of Winfield, Pa., Freeman Yoder of Westminster, S.C., Jerry Yoder and wife, Mary of Dillwyn, Paul Yoder and wife, Marty of Culpeper, Raymond Yoder and wife, Brenda of Buckingham, Esther Clark and husband, Herb of Richmond, James Yoder of Amelia; 35 grandchildren and 43 great-grandchildren. He is also preceded in death by two daughters, Edna Yoder and Betty Myers.

The family will receive friends Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bennett and Barden Funeral Home, 3215 Anderson Hwy., Powhatan. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday in the Powhatan Mennonite Church. Interment church cemetery.

Ada H. Hardy, age 95, of Amelia, died on Friday, October 5, 2001.

She was predeceased by her husband, Walter Blanton Hardy. Mrs. Hardy was a school teacher in the Amelia Co. School System for over 35 years. She is survived by her son Claude H. "Blue" Hardy and her daughter Nancy H. Smith, both of Amelia; her sister Dorothy Hargrave of King George, Va.; four grandchildren, Carla H. Reames, Laura H. Dille, Lee S. McGinn, and Lydia L. Smith; and eight great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Saturday from 7-9 p.m. at the Hillsman-Hix Funeral Home, 16409 Court St. Funeral Services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Tabernacle United Methodist Church, with interment to follow at Amelia Presbyterian Church. Contributions may be made to the Amelia Rescue Squad.

Julia Booth Dennis

Julia Booth Dennis, 79, of Powhatan, passed away at home on Saturday, October 6, 2001.

She was the widow of William W. Dennis Jr. She is survived by her children, Patricia D. Nackley and her husband, Malcolm E. Kitchen Jr., Michael W. Dennis and his wife, Karen, and Thomas K. Dennis and his wife, Betty; and grandchildren, Lauren, Kayla, and Jason.

Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, October 9. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 10, at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, 8000 Brook Rd. Interment private. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Assoc.

Gary Andrew Groves

Gary Andrew Groves, 21, of Powhatan, left this earth to be with his Heavenly Father on Sunday, October 7, 2001.

He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Charlie and Sue Groves. He is survived by his loving parents, Sue Andrews and Terry Groves, both of Powhatan; grandparents, Howard and Margaret Taylor of Hertford, N.C.; sister, Rhonda Partin and her husband, Wes of Mechanicsville; brothers, Rusty Groves and his wife, Linda of Powhatan, Rick Groves of Virginia Beach, Chuck Groves of Richmond and Howie Groves and his wife, Amanda of Southport, N.C. Also surviving are nine nieces and nephews, Tyler Simmons, Emily Partin, Rikki Groves, Arienna Groves, Charlie Groves, Carly Kerr, Summer Groves, Jarrett Groves and Dylan Stafford.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Huguenot Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Huguenot Rd. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Midlothian Ward, Duryea Rd., Midlothian, Va. Interment will follow in Powhatan Community Cemetery. Arrangements handled by the Huguenot Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Huguenot Rd.
