Robert L. Moore Sr.

Robert L. "Bobby" Moore Sr., 57, of Powhatan, died October 13, 2001. He survived by his wife, Gail H. Moore; one daughter, Abbie Gail Moore of Powhatan; three brothers, William Moore of Louisa, Gordon Moore of Richmond, and Buster Moore of North Carolina; two sisters, Marilyn Guider of Colorado, and Maureen White of Richmond; maternal grandmother, Mertilla Dunnavan.

He was preceded in death by his son, Robert L. Moore Jr. He currently worked at Flatrock Glass and Door, and was a former electrician with Stuart Circle and Charter Westbrook Hospitals.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Bennett & Barden Funeral Home, 3215 Anderson Hwy. (Rt. 60), Powhatan, and where services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday. Interment Powhatan Community Cemetery.

W. T. Roberts, Sr.

W. T. "Slim" Roberts, Sr., age 89, of Amelia, died on October 14, 2001.

He is survived by his wife, Ila Lawson Roberts; sons, W. T. Roberts, Jr. and daughter-in-law Anne, John Lawson Roberts and daughter-in-law Pamela; daughter Patricia R. Adams and son-in-law Horace all of Amelia; brother, Jesse L. Roberts of Richmond; sisters, Annie R. Maddrea of Richmond, Ruth R. Wigington of Burkeville, Louise R. Firesheets of Crewe, and Christine R. Bond, of New York, four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be on Tuesday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the Hillsman-Hix Funeral Home, 16409 Court St. A chapel service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home, with burial following in Crewe Cemetery. Contributions may be made to Tabernacle United Methodist Church or the Amelia Volunteer Rescue Squad.

Nelson W. Gaskin

Nelson W. Gaskin, age 71, formerly of Powhatan, departed this life in Richmond, Va. October 16, 2001.

He was born February 17, 1930 in Goochland, Va. Preceded in death by his parents, Nelson and Rose Gaskin, brother, Ronald C. Gaskin, and nephew, Garry J. Rudd. He served his country in the U.S. Army and Navy. He will be sadly missed by his sisters, Doris Rudd of Richmond and Martha Jasper of Amelia; brothers, Reginald Gaskin of Powhatan and Donald Gaskin of Hampton; a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, nephews, several cousins; two sisters-in-law, Mary Alice Gaskin of Powhatan and Josephine Gaskin of Hampton; two brothers-in-law, McKinley (Jake) Jasper of Amelia and devoted Frank Rudd of Richmond; other relatives and friends.

Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull Sts. Funeral services will be held Friday, October 19, 1 p.m., Virginia Veterans Cemetery Chapel, Amelia, Va. Rev. Wilbert Adams officiating. Relatives and friends assemble at the cemetery Friday, 12:45 p.m.

Thelma H. Goodman

Departed this life Saturday, October 20, 2001, Thelma H. Goodman of Amelia, Va. Remains rest at Michael W. Hawkes Funeral Home, Amelia. Funeral notice later.

Nancy Brown Venable

Nancy Brown Venable, age 77, of Richmond and formerly of Powhatan, Va., departed this life on Tuesday, October 16, 2001 in Richmond.

She is survived by three daughters, Sandra Hobbs, Patricia Henderson and Daphne Brown; a brother, Clarence Brown; a sister, Bertha Gray; a sister-in-law, Ruth Brown; a brother-in-law, Alfred Gray; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held Saturday 12 p.m. at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Powhatan. Rev. Revell Hicks officiating. Interment in the Brown Family Cemetery.

Elizabeth Macgill Randolph Lewis

Elizabeth Macgill Randolph Lewis died Wednesday, October 17, 2001 at her home in Powhatan.

Born in 1941 and raised on Greenmont Farm in Keene, Va., she was the daughter of the late Allen Killmon Randolph and Lelia Graham Hobson Randolph Bovard. Mrs. Lewis graduated from St. Anne's School in Charlottesville, and attended Sweet Briar College for two years before her marriage to John Latane Lewis III.

A charter member of the Powhatan Junior Woman's Club, she was selected as Hostess of the National Tobacco Festival in 1967. She was an active member and past president of the Powhatan Woman's Club. She was the Christmas Mother of Powhatan County in 1994. She was also a charter member of the Powhatan Garden Club and served as its president in 1970 and 1976. She served as president of the Piedmont District of the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs and was chairman of its state convention.

At the time of her death she was serving as Second Vice-President, Finance Committee Chairman, Flower Show Schools Chairman, and Scholarship Chairman of the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs. Additionally she was a Nationally Accredited Flower Show Judge. In 1990, she was appointed to the J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College Board of Directors and served as its Vice-Chairman from 1996-1998.

Mrs. Lewis and her family were devoted members of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Powhatan County where she served as Sunday School Director, was a member of the altar guild and of the Episcopal Church Women. She and her husband, Jack, are two of the tri-chairmen of the campaign to establish a YMCA in Powhatan County.

She is survived by her husband of 40 years, John Latane Lewis III; one son, John Latane Lewis IV and his wife, Audrey of Kennett Square, Pa.; and three daughters, Anne Harrison Lewis Harris and her husband, Chip of Newport News, Lelia Graham Lewis Webb and her husband, Randy of Portsmouth, and Elizabeth Lewis Allred and her husband, Jon of Davidson, N.C.; and nine grandchildren, Jack, Natalie and Harrison Lewis, Lauck, Will and Latane Harris, Macgill and Rice Webb and Chase Allred. She is also survived by one brother, Graham A. Randolph and his wife, Emily of Brooklandville, Md.; and two sisters, Carroll R. Barr and her husband, Mike of Powhatan and Bruce R. Murray and her husband, Jimmy of Keene.

Elizabeth truly loved life and friends. She always spoke in superlatives, saying, "I saw the most, wonderful, the most beautiful and the most amazing things" every day of her life.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, October 20, at 11 a.m., at St. Luke's Church in Powhatan. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the YMCA of Greater Richmond for the Powhatan YMCA. Rosa J. Hicks

Departed this life Friday, October 19, 2001, Mrs. Rosa J. Hicks, 82, of Amelia.

She is survived by her husband, Arthur Hicks; three sons, Thomas (Ella), Herbert (Joyce), and Louis Hicks; four daughters, Gertrude King (William), Arlene Johnson (Isaac), Viola and Marilyn Hicks (Ishmael); 11 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Jennie Jones, Katie Harris, Charlotte Hobson; two brothers-in-law, five sisters-in-law; a devoted niece, Cynthia Jones; and a host of other nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 24, at 1 p.m. from Liberty Baptist Church, Amelia. Rev. Neal Jackson, Pastor, officiating. Interment church cemetery. Remains rest at Michael W. Hawkes Funeral Home, Rt. 360, Amelia. Family and friends assemble at the home at 12 noon.

George W. White

George W. White, 83, of Powhatan, died on October 22, 2001.

He is survived by his son, George L. White of Powhatan; two daughters, Catherine W. Cave of Amelia and Bettie W. Roach of Charles City; one granddaughter, Tina C. Owens; three great-grandchildren, Dustin, Dale and Angel Starr.

The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Bennett & Barden Funeral Home, 3215 Anderson Hwy. (Rt. 60), Powhatan, and where services will be held Wednesday, 2 p.m. Interment Red Lane Baptist Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Leukemia Society of America.

Marie Jordan Bell

Marie Jordan Bell, formerly of Powhatan, Va., entered into eternal rest on October 24, 2001.

Loving mother of Garland E. Trent Jr., Gwendolyn Trent and Darlene Trent and doting grandmother of Garland Lamont Trent and LaBrone Austin Trent, she is also survived by two sisters, Edmonia Bradley and Estelle Jones; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, October 31, 2001 at Mount Ephraim Baptist Church, 610 Largo Rd., Upper Marlboro, Md. 20772. Wake from 10 a.m. until funeral time at 11 a.m. Interment Fort Lincoln Cemetery.

Maude Poore Van de Riet

Maude Poore Van de Riet, 92, died Wednesday, October 24, 2001, at Sentara Windermere.

She was predeceased by her husband of 38 years, William G. Van de Riet. Raised in Amelia County, she had been a resident of Norfolk and Virginia Beach since 1929. She was a member of Bayside Presbyterian Church and a charter member of Willowwood Presbyterian Church.

Van de Riet served on the board of the YWCA and did volunteer work for the American Cancer Society. The Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters presented a recognition pin for 100 hours of service. She was also a member of the Princess Anne Woman's Club and the Thalia Garden Club.

Survivors include four daughters, Bettie Lou Baecher of Roanoke, Billie Dove Merritt, Virginia Gardner of Virginia Beach, and Margaret Van de Riet of Winston-Salem, NC; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ailene Anderson of Amelia.

The funeral was held at Bayside Presbyterian Church on October 27. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Bayside Presbyterian Church, 1400 Ewell Road, 23455-4908.

John Dunnington

John "Alan" Dunnington, 17, of Powhatan, died as the result of a car accident and went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, October 30, 2001.

He was a student at Powhatan High School. He is survived by his parents, Paul and Jane Dunnington; his brother, Paul E. Dunnington III; his paternal grandmother, Hazel W. Dunnington; devoted aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends.

The family will receive friends Thursday, November 1 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Huguenot Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Rd., where services will be held Friday 2 p.m. Interment Dale Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Riverside School in Bon Air or Powhatan Volunteer Rescue Squad.

George Lowell Francis

George Lowell Francis, 87, of Powhatan, died October 30, 2001.

Funeral services will be held at a later date. Huguenot Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, assisting the family with arrangements.

William Henry Johnson Sr.

William Henry Johnson Sr., 86, of 4150 Pierce Rd., Powhatan, died October 30, 2001.

He was the husband of the late Virginia Odell Murphy Johnson. He retired from Safeway Bakery. He is survived by three daughters, Patricia Gray of Jessup, Md., Bessie Bess of Goochland and Penny McNeil of Elk Ridge, Md.; one son, William H. Johnson Jr. of Powhatan; one sister, Jessalyn Simpson of Appomattox; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. A daughter, June Fuqua, preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Robinson Funeral Home in Appomattox with burial following in the Johnson-Mann Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5 to 7 p.m. today (Thursday).

Kermit Leroy Smith

Kermit Leroy Smith, age 63, of Amelia, died on October 30, 2001.

He is survived by his wife, Faye; five sons, Shannon, Shelley and Stanlee Smith, all of Amelia, Lance Smith of Blackstone and George Hardy V of Crewe; two daughters, Katie Smith of Blackstone and Destinee Smith of Dinwiddie; and sister, Betty Bowlin of Blackstone.

A chapel service will be held on Friday at 2 p.m. in the Hillsman-Hix Funeral Home, 16409 Court St. Interment to follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Visitation will be held Thursday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Hillsman-Hix Funeral Home.

Annie Celeste Old Jones

Annie Celeste Old Jones of Earls, Amelia County, died November 2, 2001, at 95 years of age.
She was born in Nottoway County on February 15, 1906, the daughter of Laura Louise White and Alexander Hamilton Old. Mrs. Jones was married to Rodger Pryor Jones, who died in 1994, for 62 years. After graduating from Blackstone College in 1924, she attended State Teachers College (now Longwood College) in Farmville, Va.

Mrs. Jones taught school in Nottoway County. She was a lifelong member of Rocky Hill United Methodist Church, and its oldest member, where she taught Sunday School for more than 60 years, and represented the East Nottoway Charge at the Virginia Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church for many years.

She is survived by two sons, Rodger Pryor Jones Jr. and wife, Barbara of Sutherland, and Edward Hamilton Jones and wife, Nancy of Nottoway County; and one daughter, Myra Celeste Jones Green and husband, Warren of Farmville; five grandchildren, Ann Pryor Bishop and Gregory Todd Jones of Dinwiddie County, Edward Hamilton Jones Jr. of Amelia County, Aubyn Hunter Jones of Nottoway County, and Elizabeth Pryor Green of Farmville; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Charlotte Old Wingfield of Ashland.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in the Rocky Hill United Methodist Church, with interment to follow in the church cemetery. The family will recieve friends Sunday from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the Hamner-McMillian Funeral Home. memorial donations may be made to the Rocky Hill United Methodist Church, c/o Mrs. Joyce Winn, 2359 Rocky Hill Rd., Blackstone, Va. 23824.
