Rev. Paul Glendon Cregger

The Rev. Paul Glendon Cregger, 83, of Wytheville, Va., died Sunday, March 24, 2002, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 27, at 1 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel in Wytheville, Va., with the Rev. Don Scott officiating. Interment will follow in the Rosenbaum Chapel Cemetery.

He was born in Cripple Creek, Va., a son of the late Marion Kelly and Maude Jane Stroupe Cregger. He was a retired minister with the Pentecostal Holiness Church, Appalachian Conference, and was a retired dairy farmer. He was a member of Rosenbaum Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church and a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.

He was preceded in death by a son, Larry G. Cregger; two sisters, Margaret Mills and Lolly Sexton; and a daughter-in-law, Brenda Alice Cregger.

Survivors include his wife, Laura M. Cregger; daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Steve Sult of West Columbia, S.C.; a son, Teddy Glen Cregger of Dublin, Va.; three grandchildren, Lori Cregger, Teddie Cregger and Kasey Cregger; two sisters, Mary Tolley, and Betty Monahan, both of Wytheville, Va.; two brothers, James M. Cregger of Welch, W.Va., and M.K. Cregger Jr. of Grants, N.M.; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, March 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Barnett Funeral Home or at residence at any time.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorial donations to the Rosenbaum Chapel Cemetery Fund.

Mary Frances Clemons Davis

Mary Frances Clemons Davis, 70, of Walton Furnace Road, Max Meadows, Va., died Saturday, March 23, 2002, at her residence.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 26, at 11 a.m. at the Reese Funeral Home Chapel in Austinville, Va., with Glann Lee officiating. Interment will follow in St. Paul Pentecostal Holiness Church Cemetery.

She was born in Wythe County, Va., a daughter of the late James Prater and Ethel Mae Davis Clemons. She was a member of the Fort Chiswell Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Tommy Clemons; a sister, Helen Mozelle Arnold; and her husband, John Clark Davis Sr.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Toni and Eugene Waller of Max Meadows, Va.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Douglas Woodrow Davis, Edward and Nancy Davis, and Freddie and Rosita Davis, all of Max Meadows, Va.; three grandchildren, Steven Waller, Alicia Davis and Chasity Davis; stepchildren and their spouses, Betty Jean and Barney Arnold, Marilyn and Douglas Burke, all of Wytheville, Va., Wanda Sue and Joe Moyer of Walnut Port, Pa., and Joe Lee and Wilma Davis of Max Meadows, Va.; five sisters and brother-in-law, Edith Louise Clemons and Patty Joann Lineberry, both of Wytheville, Va., Peggy Judy Martin of Martinsville, Va., and Betty Jean and David Mabe of Bassett, Va., and Patsy Ann Clemons of Wytheville, Va.; one brother and sister-in-law, Clarence Jr. and Doris Clemons of Wytheville, Va.; several step-grandchildren and great step-grandchildren.

Mary Eulata Gordon

Mary Eulata Gordon, 99, of Rural Retreat, Va., died Friday, March 22, 2002, in the Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va.

A graveside service was held Monday, March 25, at 11 a.m. at the Black Lick Cemetery with the Rev. Roger Crigger officiating.

She was born in Wythe County, Va., a daughter of the late William and Ollie Payne Gordon.

She was preceded in death by a son, John Estel Gordon.

Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, James Franklin Gordon of Poplar Camp, Va., and Ernest F. and Anne Gordon of Rural Retreat, Va.; five grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

James Shaffer Hurt

James "Jim" Shaffer Hurt, 52, of Marietta, Ga., died Sunday, March 3, 2002.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 7, at 1 p.m. in the Bethany United Methodist Church, Smyrna, Ga., with the Rev. Charles Thomas officiating.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War era. He graduated summa cum laude from Wake Forest University and was a 1976 graduate from the University of Georgia School of Law. He was employed with the Governor's Office of Consumer Affairs for the past 24 years. He was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Josie Hurt of Marietta, Ga.; a daughter, Jeanette Rivers Hurt of Atlanta, Ga.; mother and stepfather, Jeanette H. and Eural Clippard of Wytheville, Va.; a sister and brother-in-law, Nancy H. and Kent Umberger of Greensboro, N.C.; and an adopted son, Chad B. Hurt of Atlanta, Ga.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, March 6, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Carmichael Funeral Home in Marietta, Ga.

William Turner

William "Bill" Turner, 76, of Bluefield, W.Va., died Monday, March 4, 2002, at his residence.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, March 6, at 6 p.m. at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Bluefield, W.Va. A private burial will be held.

He was born Jan. 31, 1926, in Erwin, N.C. He was the founder and owner of WISDOM Media Group which was formed in 1996 and includes WISDOM Television, WISDOM Radio and WISDOM Internet. Prior to launching WISDOM, he was a successful businessman and widely recognized as one of the pioneers in the cable television industry. He built one of the country's first cable systems in the early 1950s in Welch, W.Va. He is past president of the West Virginia Cable Association and served on the National Cable Television Association Board of Directors. In 1986, he began marketing satellite television programming to C-band customers. His company, Turner Vision Incorporated, expanded nationally and became a leader in the satellite industry. In 1998, Turner Vision began a joint venture with Superstar/Netlink (a Gemstar/TV Guide company) creating the largest programming marketing service in the satellite industry. He had attended Temple University.

He is survived by his wife, Brenda Morefield Turner of Bluefield, W.Va.; six children and their spouses, Donnie and Mary Turner of Bluefield, W.Va., Cindy and Dennis Sheets of Bluefield, W.Va., Kellee Turner and Michael Fritts of Fairfax, Va., Paticia Tripp-Lazakis and Theodosios "Saki" Lazakis of Bluefield, Va., Alison Whittaker and her fiancé, Tommy McCoy, of Princeton, W.Va., and Jessica Turner of War, W.Va.; his grandchildren, Natalie Tester, Will Turner, Ashleigh Turner, Marcus Herald, Lyndsey Turner, Leslie Herald, Dustin Tripp, Haley Sheets and Jordan Fritts.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorial donations be made to Cancer Research at Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center WVU Foundation, P.O. Box 1650, Morgantown, WV 26507.

Viola Jones Crigger, 84, of Wytheville, Va., died Thursday, March 7, 2002, in the Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 9, at 2 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel, Wytheville, Va., with the Rev. Roger Crigger and the Rev. Edward Richardson officiating. Interment will be in the West End Cemetery, Wytheville, Va.

She was the daughter of the late Robert and Virginia Moore Jones.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. Crigger.

Survivors include one daughter, Doris Shaffer of Wytheville, Va.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bobby and Louise Crigger of Wytheville, Va., and Dennis and Diane Crigger of Pulaski, Va.; three grandchildren, Kristy Baker, Diane Tate and Dozie Crigger; two stepgrandchildren, Janell Muldoon of Christiansburg, Va., and Kevin Hurst of Dublin, Va.; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Myrtle Maie Durham, 98, of Ceres, Va., died Tuesday, March 5, 2002, at Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va.

Funeral services will be held Friday, March 8, at 2 p.m. at the Bethany United Methodist Church in Ceres, Va., with the Rev. Larry Patton officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was born March 7, 1903, in Russell County, Va., a daughter of the late John and Martha Lester Vencil.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James O. Durham.

Survivors include four grandchildren, John T. Neel Jr. and Dusty Neel, both of Ceres, Va., Heidi Hornsby and Heather Durham, both of Slocomb, Ala.; five great-grandchildren, Derek Tibbs and Ashley Neel, both of Ceres, Va., Anna Hornsby, Austin Hornsby and Kaylee Durham, all of Slocomb, Ala.; and several nieces and nephews.

Peggy Blair Eversole

Peggy Blair Eversole, 59, of Wytheville, Va., died Thursday, March 7, 2002, in the Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Roanoke, Va.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 9, at 8 p.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel. Interment will be private at a later date.

She was a daughter of the late Thomas and Thelma Blair.

She is survived by her husband, Jerry Eversole of Wytheville, Va.; two daughters and a son-in-law, Jeannie Marie Eversole of the home, and Anne and Aaron Worrell of Wytheville, Va.; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Andy Martin of Wytheville, Va., and Chucky and Tammy Martin of Piney section of Wythe County, Va.; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Buddy Blair of Ivanhoe, Va., Wade and Kathy Blair of Danville, Va., and Bo and Patsy Blair of Walton Furnace section of Wythe County, Va.; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Layuna Shinault of Austinville, Va., Tootie and Larry Wright of Ivanhoe, Va., Tena and Jerry Sayers of Ivanhoe, Va., and Betty Wright of Austinville, Va.; four grandchildren, a great-grandson; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Angie Banes.

The family will receive friends Saturday, March 9, from 6 to 8 p.m. (service time) at the Gillman Funeral Chapel.

James Donovan "J.D." Cox Sr.

James Donovan "J.D." Cox Sr., 80, of Bristol, Tenn., died Monday, May 12, 2003, in Bristol, Tenn.

He was born March 2, 1923, in Pickshin, W.Va., a son of the late Clayborn B. and Pauline A. Vaughan Cox. He was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps in Bastian, Va., in 1940 and 1941, where he met his wife, Winifred Ellen "Toots" Kelly Cox. He was a World War II veteran having served in the U.S. Marine Corps. After more than 30 years of service, he retired from the Virginia Department of Corrections as a warden. Recently he received his 50-year pin from the Masonic Lodge. He was a Past Master of the Bland Lodge.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Winifred Ellen "Toots" Kelly Cox; and a son, J.D. "Don" Cox Jr.

Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Ron and Jane Cox of Bristol, Tenn., and Mike Cox of Mechanicsville, Va.; five grandchildren, Doug Cox and his family of Laurel, Del., Eric Cox and Jill Holcomb, both of Norfolk, Va., and Amanda Cox and Chris Cox, both of Mechanicsville, Va.; extended families, the Havens and the Townleys; and close friends, Bob Myers, Ralph DeHart, both of Bland, Va., Marvin Lambert of Courtland, Va., and Brenda Cox of Salisbury, Md.

Memorial donations may be made to a local food bank or charity of one's choice.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Hub; two daughters, Shirley and Rosemary; her parents, Thomas and Lillian Atwell King; and brothers.

Survivors include a daughter, Marsha Penley of Wytheville, Va.; grandchildren and their spouses, Chris and Tracy Penley of Wytheville, Va., Faith Seagle of Ceres, Va., Meagan and Chad Parcell of Wytheville, Va., Eleanor and Keith Dunn of Wytheville, Patrick and Sarah Bruce of Ceres, Va., Joy Bruce of Roanoke, Va., and Dixie and Craig Booe of Mocksville, N.C.; eight great-grandchildren, Hayley, Devin, Adrian, Jaden, Jacob, Kaitlyn, Travis, and Jeremy; extended family, Danny and Linda Penley, and Booty Bass; and her little dog, Brittany; and five nieces and nephews.

Herbert "Tony" Hancock, 32, of Baltimore, Md., died Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jean Jones Mabe; and his parents, Thomas and Maude Jackson Mabe.

Mabe and Terry Lee Nalley, both of Greensboro, N.C., and Shantel Woods of Max Meadows, Va.; five sisters and brothers-in-law, Beverly Ann and H.D. Floyd Lee Carroll

Floyd Lee Carroll, 53, of the Mechancisburg community of Bland died Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002 at his home.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Sept. 15, at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home in White Gate with the Rev. Joe Taylor and the Rev. Doug Hyndrich officiating. Burial was in the Mechanicsburg Cemetery in Mechanicsburg.

He was born Dec. 3, 1948, at Mechanicsburg, son of Louise Walker Carroll of Mechanicsburg and the late Lewis Lee Caroll. He was retired from VDOT and was a member of the Mechanicsburg Christian Church. He loved ballgames, playing horseshoes, hunting and fishing.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by four sisters and brother-in-law, Geneva C. and Ward Pauley Jr., Dottie C. Drummond and Juanita C. Farlow, all of Bland, and Sheila Carroll of Williamsburg; a nephew, Kevin Pauley; two nieces, Amy Rasnack and Ashlee Drummond; two great-nieces, Brittanie and Sara Jo Ransack; several aunts, uncles and other relatives and friends.

Pearl Cox Cassell

Pearl Lucille Cox Cassell of Ceres, 105, one day short of 106, died Friday, Sept. 13, 2002, at the Edgemont Center in Wytheville.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Sept. 15, at Bethany United Methodist Church in Ceres with the Rev. Ruth Ann Henley officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

She was born Sept. 14, 1896, in Bland County, a daughter of the late Lee and Susan Groseclose Cox. She graduated from Ceres High School and taught school at the Cave School. She was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Davis Cassell.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Filmore and Marie Cassell of Ceres; one sister, Alberta Cox of Ceres; seven grandchildren and spouses, Harold and Linda Cassell of Salem, Iris and Maynard Gardner and Eugene Cassell, all of Wytheville, Arleene and Reggie White of Jacksonville, Fla., Arnold and Donna Cassell, Carlton and Betty Cassell and Valerie and Jerrie Mutter, all of Ceres; 13 great-grandchildren, Tim Cassell, Tyron Cassell, Eric Gardner, Heather Gardner, Jason Gardner, Adam Gardner, Scott White, Ben White, Daniel White, Christopher Cassell, Shawn Cassell, Michael Cassell and Kimberly Cassell; and one great-great granddaughter, Cayla Cassell.
