Reba Barnett Gross

Reba Mary Barnett Gross, 74, of Bastian, died Monday, Sept. 16, 2002, in the Roanoke Community Hospital, Roanoke.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 18, at 11 a.m. at the Newberry Funeral Home in Bland. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. at the Riverview Cemetery, Ronceverte, W.Va.

Born Feb. 24, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Oliver H. and Ollie Pritt Barnett. She was preceded in death by five brothers; three sisters, including Lula Barnett of Bastian; and two children, Freddie and Freda Gail.

Survivors include her ex-husband, Fred Charles Gross of Bluefield, W.Va.; one daughter, Linda Kay Gross Cregger of Bastian; one son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Elaine Gross of Bluefield, W.Va.; two grandsons, Justin Gross and Ryan Gross, both of Bluefield, W.Va.; two special daughters, Kathy Frye and Frances Bandy, both of Rural Retreat; and a special friend, Jesse Ray Hull of Bastian.

Newberry Funeral Home, Bland, is in charge of the arrangements.

Anna Lois McFarland Hancock

Anna Lois McFarland Hancock, 86, of Ceres died Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2002, after a long illness in Takoma Adventist Hospital, Greeneville, Tenn.

Funeral services were held Friday, Sept. 20, at 2 p.m. in the Bethany United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ruthanne Henley officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

She made her home with her daughter and son-in-law, Aileen and Donald Solomon in Greeneville, Tenn., since 1998. She was born in Bland County, a daughter of the late Loranza D. "L.D." McFarland and Rosa Mae King McFarland. She was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Byron Hancock; a grandson, Robert Thompson, and a great-granddaughter, Erica Burton.

She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Mae and Donald Hanshew of Ceres, Doris and Lenden Thompson of Burkes Garden, Aileen and Donald Solomon of Ceres; a son and daughter-in-law, Alvin and Tammy Hancock of Ceres; nine grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Janet Evans Harner

Janet Evans Harner, 66, of Bland, died Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002, at Pulaski Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Sept. 14, at 2 p.m. at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home in White Gate, with the Rev. Carl Holland officiating. Burial was in the Mechanicsburg Cemetery, Mechanicsburg.

She was born April 10, 1936, at Princeton, W.Va. She was a member of the Bland Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Clay and Gladys Williams Evans; one brother, Charles B. Evans; two sisters, Peggy E. Thomas and Betty E. Thornton.

Survivors include her husband, Harold "Hap" Harner; two sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas and Kathy Harner of Bland, and Tim and Flora Harner of Rocky Gap; four grandchildren, Kari Beth Harner, Samantha Harner, Jessica Harner, and Evan Harner.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Jessie Mechem Ledford

Jessie Mechem Ledford, 102, of Rural Retreat died Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002, in Bland County.

Funeral services were held Friday, Sept. 20, at 1 p.m. at Marvin United Methodist Church in Wythe County with the Rev. Tony Perry and the Rev. Gene Kirk officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

A native of Columbus, Ind., she was a noted educator and churchwoman. She received her undergraduate education at DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind., and at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio, where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree at a time when few women attended a university at all.

She subsequently went to Columbia University where she earned her master’s degree in 1930. After receiving her undergraduate degree, she traveled to the Smoky Mountains in East Tennessee, intending to serve the educational needs of the poor of Appalachia.

She taught at Pittman Center near Sevierville, Tenn., in the 1920s where she met her husband-to-be, Allen James Ledford, who later became a United Methodist minister.

She left to continue her studies at Columbia University where she met the president of Berea College, Berea, Ky., who invited her to come to Berea to help train future teachers.

Together, the Ledfords served a number of churches in East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia. Her husband was the founder and first principal at Clinch High School in Hawkins County, Tenn. Mrs. Ledford taught English there.

In the early 1960s, the couple moved to Rural Retreat where he served as minister of Marvin United Methodist Church. She was widowed in 1981.

Survivors include her only daughter, Maggie Ledford Lawson Hill of Prague, Czech Republic; five grandchildren, James Edward Lawson and Sarah Elizabeth Lawson Russell, both of Rural Retreat, Margaret Rose Lawson Lanahan of Asheville, N.C., Charles Frederick Lawson of Wytheville and Laura Ellen Lawson Rosbottom of Apex, N.C.; and seven great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that those who prefer may make memorial donations to Marvin United Methodist Church.

Iris June Pennington

Iris June Pennington, 72, of Walkersville, Md., formerly of Wytheville, died Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2002, at her residence.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Sept. 22, at 2 p.m. at Jubilee Baptist Church, Wytheville, with the Rev. Kelly Marshall officiating. Interment will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Bastian.

Born Jan. 12, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Bessie Bailey Thomas. She was a homemaker and a member of the Jubilee Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Garland Pennington.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Tena Pennington of Walkersville, Md.; two grandchildren, Heather Pennington and Hannah Pennington, both of Walkersville, Md.; and a brother, C.E. Thomas Jr. of Bastian. The family will receive friends Saturday, Sept. 21, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bland Funeral Chapel, Bland.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1393 Progress Way, Suite 908, Eldersburg, MD 21784; or Hospice of Frederick County, P.O. Box 1799, Frederick, MD 21702.

Jimmie Tibbs

Jimmie Tibbs, 66, of Ceres, Va., died Monday, Sept. 23, 2002, in the Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 25, at 2 p.m. at the Sharon Lutheran Church. Interment will follow in the Sharon Lutheran Church Cemetery.

He was born in Bland County, Va., a son of the late Willis Perry and Ella Mae Kitts Tibbs.

He is survived by his wife, Brenda Powell Tibbs of Marion, Va.; four daughters and son-in-law, Pamela Ann Tibbs of Ceres, Va., Beth and Jim Brown of Bland, Va., Lauren Katie Tibbs of Ceres, Va., and Patty Rhea Tibbs of Bland, Va.; two sons, Gary Michael Tibbs of Ceres, Va., and Jimmie Lewis Tibbs of Chilhowie, Va.; three sisters, Anna Wayne Thompson of Ceres, Va., Gladys Umbarger of Bland, Va., and Alma Kitts of Columbus, Ga.; three brothers, Willis Tibbs of Rocky Mount, Va., Larry Bruce Tibbs, and Joe Tibbs, both of Ceres, Va.; three grandchildren, Derek Tibbs of Ceres, Va., Kayla Tibbs and Lindsey Pires, both of Bland, Va.; special friends, Red Peck and David King, both of Ceres, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, Sept. 24, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Sharon Lutheran Church.

William Warren Young

William Warren Young, 65, of Culpeper, died Sept. 10, 2002, at his residence.

A memorial service was held Friday, Sept. 13, at 3 p.m. at the Clore-English Funeral Home with Pastor Paula J. Jones officiating. A private interment followed.

He was born May 20, 1937, in Nebo, son of the late William R. Young and Ethel Harner Young. He was retired from B & J Fencing Company and loved the great outdoors. He was a member of the Rifleman’s Association.

He preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Ola Young Clements.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Jane P. Young of Culpeper; a brother, Graham Jack Young of Duloth, Ga.; three sisters, Rachel Jean Young of Marion, Frankie Y. Newberry of bland, and Laura Mae Galafora of Atlanta; an a special nephew, Stephen H. Newberry of Bland, and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Clore-English Funeral Home in Culpeper was in charge of arrangements.

Earl Freeman Sarver Jr.

Earl Freeman "Popeye" Sarver Jr., 61, of Bastian, Va., formerly of Yards, Va., died Monday, Feb. 3, 2003, at his home.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 6, at 11 a.m. at the Dudley Memorial Mortuary Chapel in Bluefield, Va., with the Rev. Lee McIntosh officiating. Burial will follow in the Grandview Memory Gardens.

He was born in Yards, Va. He was retired from Sealy Mattress Co. in Bluefield, Va., and was of the Protestant faith.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl F. Sarver Sr. and Mary Henrietta Dangerfield Sarver; and a brother, Bobby Sarver.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Crockett and Kelli Sarver of Bastian, Va.; a grandson, Tyler Sarver; two brothers, Freeman Sarver of Yards, Va., and Kenneth Sarver of Bluewell, W.Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Feb. 5, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Dudley Memorial Mortuary.

Charles R. Hagan

Charles R. "Charlie" Hagan, 72, of Toledo, Ohio, formerly of Bastian, Va., died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, at his residence from cancer.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Nov. 29, at 8 p.m. at the Eggleston-Meinert Funeral Home in Oregon, Ohio with Pastor Daniel Ellis officiating.

He was born in Roanoke, Va., on April 8, 1930, to Oscar C. and Opal Rowland Hagan. He served in the Army before moving to Toledo, Ohio. He worked on the lakes for 18 years, retiring in 1993 from the Oglebay Norton Line. After retiring, he worked for the BP service stations most recently at Navarre & Coy Road.

He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, his parents, two brothers and one sister.

Survivors include his wife of 34 years, Diane; sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Jennifer Hagan, and Greg and Tammy Hagan; eight grandchildren, Anthony, Janette, Marissa, Nathaniel, Justin, Brittney, Samantha and Kristina; three brothers and a sister-in-law, Bernard and Louise Hagan, Paul Hagan, and Lawrence Hagan of Virginia; eight sisters and brothers-in-law, Dora Pritchard, Carol and Will Pauley, both of Virginia, Beulah Pritchett, Ruby and Mack Estep, both of West Virginia, Jean Gore and Barbara Wilson, both of Ohio; and a sister-in-law, Betty Hagan of Virginia.

The family will receive friends Friday, Nov. 29, from 4 to 9 p.m. at the Eggleston-Meinert Funeral Home in Oregon, Ohio.

The family suggests that contributions may be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio or the charity of the donor's choice.

Ola Mauldin Barrow

Ola Mauldin Barrow, 72, of Bristol, Va., formerly of Rocky Gap, Va., died Friday, Jan. 3, 2003.

Funeral service will be held Sunday, Jan. 5, at 7 p.m. at the Highland Funeral Service Bland Chapel, Bland, Va., with the Rev. Ralph Kidd officiating. Graveside service will be held Monday, Jan. 6, at 11 a.m. at the Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Princeton, W.Va.

She was retired from Tultex Manufacturing in Bastian, Va., with over 30 years of service - she served as plant superintendent in Chilhowie, Va., and Bastian, Va., for the last five years of employment. She was a charter member of Rocky Gap Chapter No. 154 Order of the Eastern Star and served as Grand Esther in 1985-86 and served as past matron. She was a member of the Lowery Hills Garden Club.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, David H. Mauldin Jr.; her parents, Tolby and Nellie Walker Childress; and an infant brother, Harry Childress.

Survivors include her husband, Henry Barrow of Bristol, Va.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Jane and Bob Mullin of Bluefield, W.Va., and Kathy and Robert Stalnaker of Charleston, W.Va.; two grandsons, Sean Stalnaker and Eric Stalnaker; one stepdaughter and spouse, Donna and Tom McIntyre of Damascus, Va.; four brothers and sisters-in-law, D.J. Childress of Columbia, S.C., Wayne and Ruth Childress of Orlando, Fla., J. Robert and Janet Childress of Altavista, Va., and William "Bud" and Joyce Childress of Durham, N.C.; and two sisters and brother-in-law, Eddith Stowers of Radford, Va., and Marion and Riley Sarver of Roxboro, N.C.

The family will receive friends Sunday, Jan. 5, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Highland Funeral Service Bland Chapel, or at the Barrow home on Monticello Drive, Bristol, Va. Monday, Jan. 6, after 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations may be made to the Rocky Gap United Methodist Church, Rocky Gap, Va.

Richard Franklin Blalock

Richard Franklin Blalock, 45, of the Marlow community in Anderson County, Tenn., died Tuesday, June 10, 2003, at Roane Medical Center of Harriman, Tenn.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 12, at 7:30 p.m. in the Chapel of Sharp Funeral Home, Oliver Springs, Tenn., with Rev. Ronald Guthrie and Jay Kirby officiating. Burial and graveside services will be held Friday, June 13, at 4 p.m. at Anderson Memorial Gardens in Tennessee.

He was born April 24, 1958, in Anderson County, Tenn. He was a resident of Bland, Va., for 10 years. He was employed by A.B.B. Power Inc. of Bland, Va., for six years. He was also a U.S. Marine Corps veteran.

He was preceded in death by his father, Arthur Lewis Blalock.

Survivors include a daughter, Jessica Erin Blalock, and her mother, Kathy Walters, both of Clinton, Tenn.; a son, Richard Nathan Blalock, and his mother, Miriam Davis, both of Max Meadows, Va.; his mother, Zella Goodman Blalock of the Marlow community of Anderson County, Tenn.; a brother and sister-in-law, Chuck and Janet Blalock of Clinton, Tenn.; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Sheila Duncan of Knoxville, Tenn., Sue and Jay Woodard of Wilson, N.C., and Bridgette and Jim Goins of Harriman, Tenn.; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and extended family members.

The family will receive friends Thursday, June 12, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the Sharp Funeral Home.

Edgar Otis Harman

Edgar Otis Harman, 76, of Wytheville, Va., died Tuesday, June 10, 2003, in the Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Roanoke, Va.

Funeral services will be held Friday, June 13, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel, Wytheville, Va. Interment will be in the Davis Cemetery. American Legion Post No. 9 will conduct graveside military rites.

He was born May 20, 1927 in Rodell, W.Va. He was a retired maintenance worker with Aeroquip and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Otis Patrick and Goldie Williams Harman; a half sister, Mable Jean Fisher; and a half brother, Eldridge Elmo Harmon.

Survivors include his wife, Rosetta Ruth Harman; two sons and daughters-in-law, Eddie and Judy Harman of Knoxville, Tenn., and Randy and Karen Harman of Bland, Va.; three grandchildren, Brandy Jones, Mark Harman and Zeke Harman; one great-grandchild, Tricia Gaddis; two half sisters and half brother-in-law, Flora Mae Thomas of Wytheville, Va., and Dorothy Ellen and Leon Freeman of Austinville, Va.; one half brother, David D. Harmon of Fries, Va.; one brother-in-law, Reed Fisher of Route 3, Wytheville, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Thursday, June 12, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home or anytime at the home.

Elbert Harvey Spencer

Elbert Harvey Spencer, 63, of Thomasville, N.C., died Saturday, June 7, 2003.

Funeral services were held Monday, June 9, at 4 p.m. in the J.C. Green & Sons Chapel in Thomasville, N.C., with the Rev. Pat Ellis officiating. Interment was in the Original Church of God Cemetery, Davidson County, N.C.

He is survived by his wife, Ruby Goins Spencer of Thomasville, N.C.; two sons, Nathan Wayne Spencer and Ricky Earl Spencer, both of Thomasville, N.C.; his mother, Emmie Spencer Nichols of Max Meadows, Va.; five sisters, Virginia Davis of Bland, Va., Elsie Author of Christiansburg, Va., Carrie Jones of Austinville, Va., Linda Sykes of Galax, Va., and Susan Westmoreland of Roanoke, Va.; four brothers, Herman Spencer of Mountain City, Tenn., Timothy Spencer of Max Meadows, Va., Clinton Spencer of Staunton, Va., and Dewey Spencer of Pulaski, Va.; and seven grandchildren, Brandon Spencer, Sean Spencer, Emily Spencer, Maston Kindley, Heather Kindley, Tristan Brewer and Danielle Ward.
