Elsie Umberger Moyers, 99, of Wytheville, Va., died Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2003, at Asbury Place, Wytheville, Va.

Arrangements are pending.

Ellis W. Morehead

Ellis W. Morehead, 92, of the Walker Creek community in Bland County, Va., died Tuesday, July 29, 2003.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Aug. 1, at 2 p.m. at the Newberry Funeral Home in Bland, Va., with the Rev. Roger Lusk officiating. Interment will be in Hoge's Chapel Cemetery in Bland, Va.

He was a lifelong resident of Bland County, Va., and was a member of the Central United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James "Wardy" and Bessie Helvy Morehead; a sister, Ruby Morehead Tickle; and a brother-in-law, J.D. Tickle.

Survivors include one niece; and his caregivers and close family friends, Jack and Veronica Compton of Bland, Va.

The family will receive friends Thursday, July 31, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Newberry Funeral Home in Bland, Va.

John Nye Tickle Jr.

John Nye Tickle Jr., 55, of Bland, Va., died Sunday, March 30, 2003, at the Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday, April 1, at 2 p.m. at the Stowers Cemetery at the home place with the Rev. Doug Hyndrich officiating.

He was preceded in death by his father, John Nye Tickle Sr.

Survivors include his mother, Helen Tickle of Bland, Va.; one daughter, Savanna Nye Tickle of Bluefield, W.Va.; two brothers, Robert Alan Tickle of New Jersey and Stanley Joel Tickle of Bland, Va.; and three nieces.

John Henry Hurley

John Henry Hurley, 50, of Bland, Va., died Monday, Dec. 30, 2002 at his residence.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, at 11 a.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel, Wytheville, Va., with the Rev. Arthur Chapman and the Rev. Bennie Muncy officiating. Interment will be in Roselawn Cemetery, Princeton, W.Va.

He was the son of the late Charles Edgar and Elizabeth McLemore Hurley. He was an employee of Williams Manufacturing and was a well known local musician.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Elizabeth Marie Hurley; and a sister, Nancy Lou Hurley.

Survivors include his wife, Deborah Roland Hurley of Bland, Va.; a daughter, Retha Denise Hurley of Erving, Mass.; four sisters, Shirley Tester of Salem, Va., Mary Estep of Fenton, Mich., Faye Justus of Axton, Va., and Lucy Estep of Columbus, Ohio; two brothers, Charles Hurley of Iaeger, W.Va., and Kenneth Hurley of Pineville, W.Va.; mother-in-law, Bessie Roland of Wytheville, Va.; and two grandchildren, Austin Hurley and Nathaniel Hurley.

The family will receive friends Thursday, Jan. 2, 2003, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Hospice of Southwest Virginia.

Eva B. Pruett Dunagan

Eva B. Pruett Dunagan, 92, of Princeton, W.Va., died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002, at the Princeton Community Hospital, Princeton, W.Va.

A service to celebrate her life was held Saturday, Nov. 23, at 1 p.m. at the Burns Wornal Chapel of Memorial Funeral Directory, Athens Road, Princeton, W.Va., with the Rev. Gerald McKinney, the Rev. Joe Fritz, and the Rev. Barry Skaggs officiating. Burial was in the Shiloh Cemetery, Bland, Va.

Born Oct. 10, 1910, in Bland County, Va., she was a former employee for National Coil Company in Bluefield, W.Va., and the Bastian Sportswear Company. She was a member of the Silver Springs Baptist Church in Princeton, W.Va.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Eugene and Louise Alburt Williams; her first husband, Henry H. Pruett Sr.; her second husband, T.R. Dunagan; a grandson, Steven Pruett; two great-grandchildren, Tonya and Chris; and five brothers and sisters, Pauline Helvey, Della Sarver, Ed Williams, Jim Williams and Blake Williams.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Henry H. Jr. and Lena Pruett of Bluefield, W.Va.; a daughter and son-in-law, Hilda and Charles Bowling of Princeton, W.Va.; four grandchildren, Jerry Lee Pruett, Patricia Dotson, Donald Pruett and Michael Bowling; eight great-grandchildren, Becky Pruett, Kelly Skeens, Christie Tooley, Lucretia Templeton, Joshua Pruett, Stephanie Pruett, Casey Bowling and Josh Bowling; three great-great-grandchildren, Tiffany Scott, Michael Gillespie and Justin Templeton; three stepchildren, Maxine, Rachel and Babe.

Clifford Edward Payne

Clifford Edward Payne, 70, of the Little Creek section of Bland County, Va., died Friday, Nov. 22, 2002.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Nov. 25, at 1 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel, Wytheville, Va., with the Rev. Stanley Lester officiating. Interment will follow in the West End Cemetery, Wytheville, Va.

He was born Feb. 20, 1932, in Horse Creek, (McDowell County) W.Va. He was a retired coal miner, carpenter, and brick mason and was affiliated with the Full Gospel Tabernacle in Rural Retreat, Va.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence Edward and Virgie Ellen Wagner Payne; a grandson, Melvin Edward Mullins; a son-in-law, Oren S. Gray; and a sister, Etta Marie Moore.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Elizabeth "Mazie" Kennedy Payne of the home; children and their spouses, Brenda and Bobby Mullins of Rural Retreat, Va., Priscilla and Stanley Lester of Hurley, Va., Sheba and Jimmy Payne of Little Creek section of Bland County, Va., Daria Gray of Wytheville, Va., and Clifford E. Jr. and Mildred Payne of Little Creek section of Bland County, Va.; 16 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several sisters and brothers and their spouses, Freda Payne of Tazewell, Va., Wanda and Bobby Muncy of Princeton, W.Va., Wilma and Bud Finley of Bluefield, W.Va., Fern and Robert Akers of Ivanhoe, Va., Theodocia and the Rev. Rance Edwards of Ivanhoe, Va., Phillip S. Payne of Indiana, Hubert Payne of Ivanhoe, Va., Roland Payne of Bandy, Va., Burrell and Anna Payne of Ivanhoe, Va., and Chester and Barbara Payne of Ivanhoe, Va.

Carrie Caulder Muncy

Carrie Caulder Muncy, 77, of Fayetteville, N.C., died Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002 in the Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, Fayetteville, N.C.

Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 11, at 2 p.m. at Highland Presbyterian Church, Fayetteville, N.C., with Dr. J. Ernest Johnson and the Rev. Leighton McKeithen officiating. Interment was in LaFayette Memorial Park, Fayetteville, N.C.

She is survived by her husband, Robert Peery Muncy of the home; a son, Vance Lee Muncy of Hickory, N.C.; one niece, Susie Becker of St. Paul's, N.C.; and one grandchild, Justice Hope Muncy of Vale, N.C.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Highland Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 111 Highland Ave., Fayetteville, NC 28305.

James W. Thompson

James W. "Jack" Thompson, 71, of Marion, N.C., died Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2002, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Nov. 22, at 11 a.m. at Westmoreland Funeral Home Chapel in Marion, N.C., with the Rev. Sam Robinson and the Rev. Steve Durham officiating. Military honors will be provided by the U.S. Army.

He was born June 10, 1931, in Bland County, Va., a son of the late Charles M. Thompson and Mary Repass Thompson. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He retired from both C.E. Air Preheater and Sara Lee Knit Products. He was a member of North Cove Baptist Church.

He is survived his wife, Mary Rozetta Stevens Thompson of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, James Timothy and Jennifer Thompson of Nebo, Va.; two granddaughters, Jordan and Hannah; three sisters, Helen Caldie of Hampton, Va., Gladys Faulk of Hampton, Va., and Letha Olson of Waverly, Va.

The family will receive friends Thursday, Nov. 21, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Westmoreland Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorials may be made to Hospice of McDowell County, 218 Logan Street, Marion, NC 28752.

Norma Jean Wolfe

Norma Jean Wolfe, 68, of Bland, Va., died Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, in the Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Jan. 17, at 2 p.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel, Wytheville, Va. Interment will be in the Hoges Chapel Cemetery, Bland, Va.

She was retired from Tultex where she was employed for 25 years.

She is survived by her husband, Sam Wolfe of Bland, Va.; three daughters, Karen Rose of Goochland, Va., Marie Scott of Pennsylvania, and Rowena Surratt of Wytheville, Va.; two sons, Jack Scott of Washington, and Wade Oakes of Bastian, Va.; a sister, Connie Deel of Jacksonville, N.C.; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Thursday, Jan. 16, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel.

Rosana Viola George Scritchfield

Rosana Viola George Scritchfield, 91, of Bland, Va., died Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002, at her residence.

Graveside services will be held Friday, Oct. 11, at 1 p.m. in the National Memorial Cemetery in Phoenix, Ariz.

She was born in Galesburg, N.D., a daughter of the late William and Sietska Terpstra George. She taught over 60 years in public and private schools.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gailon Eugene Scritchfield

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Richard and Connie Scritchfield Smith of Bland, Va.; a son and daughter-in-law, Keith "Billy" and LaQuita Scritchfield of Loveland, Colo.; and 12 grandchildren.

Richard Francis Parker

Richard Francis Parker, 66, of Bland, Va., died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Feb. 7, at 2 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel, Wytheville, Va. Interment will be in the Robinette Cemetery in Bland, Va.

He was a son of the late James Carl Parker. He was a retired mental health worker and was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War.

She is survived by his wife, Enedina Perez Parker of Bland, Va.; a daughter, Sharon Lynn Montez of Corpus Christi, Texas; three sons, Keith Allen Parker, Karl Aaron Parker, and Gary Shawn Parker, all of Corpus Christi, Texas; his mother, Ollie Mae Demidovich of Bland, Va.; a sister, Betty Jo Fletcher of Charlotte, N.C.; three brothers, Tommy Ray Parker of Max Meadows, Va., Larry Wayne Parker of Wytheville, Va., and Terry Lee Parker of Broussard, La.; and six grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Friday, Feb. 7, from 1 to 2 p.m. (service time) at Grubb Funeral Home.

Thelma Frances Hackler Repass, 74, of Wytheville, Va., died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 8, at 11 a.m. at Barnett Funeral Home Chapel in Wytheville, Va., with the Rev. Aubrey Whitlow officiating. Interment will be in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.

She was born in Wythe County, Va. She was a member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Gleaves Repass; her parents, Marvin L. and Mable Gullion Hackler; a son, James A. "Jimmy" Repass; and a sister, Margaret H. Umberger.

Survivors include one daughter, Virginia R. Mahaffey of Wytheville, Va.; one granddaughter, Erin E. Mahaffey of Wytheville, Va.; a daughter-in-law, Deborah C. Repass of Wytheville, Va.; two sisters, Mozelle H. Six and Priscilla H. Pennington, both of Wytheville, Va.; four brothers, Marvin G. Hackler, Frank M. Hackler, Roy E. Hackler and Dennis W. Hackler, all of Wytheville, Va.; and a special friend, Sabrena C. Mills of Atlanta, Ga.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorial donations to the charity of one's choice.

Anthony A. Thomas

Anthony A. Thomas, 1, of Elyria, Ohio, died Monday, Jan. 27. 2003, at Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio, after a nine-month illness with acute myeloid leukemia.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 1, at Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, Lorain, Ohio, with Deacon John Slatcoff of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church officiating. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain, Ohio.

He was born May 2, 2001, in Lorain, Ohio.

He was survived by his parents, Alvin S. Thomas Jr. and Jamie L. Bzdak; a sister, Ashley N. Thomas of Elyria, Ohio; maternal grandmother, Angel Bzdak; paternal grandparents, Alvin S. Sr. and Judy Thomas of Lorain, Ohio; maternal great-grandmother, Betty Branscum of Elyria, Ohio; maternal great-grandfather and his wife, Theodore F. and Joan Pruitt of Tennessee; paternal great-grandfather, Ellis Thomas Sr. of Elyria, Ohio; paternal great-grandparents, Jose and Victoria Ruiz of Lorain, Ohio; maternal great-great-grandmothers, Nettie Pruitt of Bluefield, W.Va., and Glada Goins of Bland, Va.; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Josephine Kent, 61, of Bland, Va., died Sunday, June 15, 2003.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 17, at 2 p.m. at the Newberry Funeral Home Chapel in Bland, Va. Burial will be in the Mechanicsburg Cemetery in the Mechanicsburg community of Bland County, Va.

She belonged to the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ of Hollybrook, Va.

She was preceded in death by her father, Robert K. Patton of Bland, Va.; and two sisters, Betsy Snider and Blanche Tester of Maryland.

Survivors include her mother, Ethel Dillow Patton of Max Meadows, Va.; two daughters and son-in-law, Camilla "Kandy" Kent, and Ginger and Mickey Armstrong, all of Max Meadows, Va.; two sons and daughter-in-law, Kelly and Tammy Kent, and Richard W. Kent, all of Max Meadows, Va.; six grandsons, one granddaughter and one great-granddaughter.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, June 17, from 1 to 2 p.m. (service time) at the Newberry Funeral Home.

Glenn Warfield Baublitz Sr., 81, of the White Gate community, Pearisburg, Va., died Wednesday, April 30, 2003, at Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital, Pearisburg, Va.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 3, at 2 p.m. at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home Chapel, White Gate, Va. with the Rev. Donald White officiating. Interment will be in the Stinson Cemetery, White Gate, Va.

He was born Feb. 9, 1922, at Chestnut Ridge, Md., a son of the late Joseph Harrison and Mary Elizabeth Tillman Baublitz.

He is survived by his wife, Anna Berry Baublitz; two sons, George Baublitz of McCoy, Va., and Glenn Baublitz of Pulaski, Va.; four daughters and sons-in-law, Janice and Bob Thomas of Pearisburg, Va., Donna and John O'Brien of White Hall, Md., Glenda and Larry Ledford of Parkton, Md., and Kim B. Whittaker of Pearisburg, Va.; one brother, Lawrence Warren Baublitz of Reisterstown, Md.; one sister, Mary Hopkins of Landsdown, Md.; nine grandchildren, Bo Thomas, Monica Horan, Jay Troyer, Carlo Openshawn, Tonya Mullins, Krysta Whittaker, Jordan Ledford, Sierra Ledford and Jaden Ledford; five great-grandchildren, Tasha Mullins, Tamara Mullins, Kelsea Mullins, Aryanna Horan and Justice Openshawn.

The family will receive friends Friday, May 2, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home, and at other times at the home of Janice and Bob Thomas.

Nell Francis Bird, 91, of Wytheville, Va., died Saturday, March 15, 2003, at Asbury Place in Wytheville, Va.

Funeral services will be held Monday, March 17, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel in Wytheville, Va., with the Rev. Dr. Donald Stansell officiating. Interment will be in the Roselawn Cemetery, Marion, Va.

Born Dec. 27, 1911, in Marion, Va., she was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Wytheville, Va. She was a past member of the Wythe County Community Hospital Auxiliary, the Wednesday Club, Wilderness Road D.A.R., Moribana Garden Club, and several bridge groups.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul E. Bird; her parents, Lewis Preston and Mary Sherwood Francis; a sister and brother-in-law, Roxie and Bill Wolfe; and three brothers and sisters-in-law, Ted and Lillian Francis, Percy and Faye Francis, and Jim and Marguerite Francis.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy Bird and Edward Wilson of Wytheville, Va.; one son and daughter-in-law, Paul Edmond and Patricia Bird of Arlington, Va.; five grandchildren, Jeffrey Wilson, Beth Wilson Dowdy, Michael Bird, Catherine Bird Eagleton and Caroline Bird; and three great-grandchildren, Madisyn Dowdy, Alyssa Dowdy and Riley Dowdy.

The family will receive friends Monday, March 17, from 1 to 2 p.m. (service time) at the Barnett Funeral Home.
