Herman Charles Hanshew, 66, of North Las Vegas, Nev., died Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002, in Las Vegas, Nev.

Funeral services were held in Las Vegas, Nev. Burial was in Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Boulder City, Nev.

He was born Nov. 9, 1935, in Virginia, the son of Nellie Hubble Hanshew and the late Herman V. Hanshew. He was a 26-year resident of Las Vegas, Nev., and was a retired U.S. Army veteran.

He is survived his wife, Sharon Hanshew; six daughters, Debra Patrick, Katrina Turner, Bobby Jo LeCates and Valerie Winterton, all of Las Vegas, Nev., Cheryl Davis and Christina Hanshew, both of Colorado; four sons, Kenneth Hanshew, Kevin Hanshew, Harold Hanshew and Keith Hanshew, all of Las Vegas, Nev.; his mother, Nellie Hanshew of Nebo, Va.; one sister, Margaret Moseley of Thomaston, Ga.; 29 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Virginia Felts Shockley

Virginia Felts Shockley, 85, of Largo, Fla., formerly of Wythe County, Va., died Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, Oct. 26, at 1 p.m. in the Groseclose Chapel Cemetery with the Rev. Omar Burns officiating.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Bruce Shockley; and her parents, Elmer and Clara Felts.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Doris and Vernon Neel of Bland, Va., and Linda and Gene Taylor of Largo, Fla.; four sons and daughters-in-law, Edward and Claire Shockley of Stoughton, Mass., David Wayne and Audrey Shockley of Virginia Beach, Va., Benny and Carol Shockley of Bland, Va., and William Shockley of Lexington, N.C.; 16 grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-stepgrandchild.

The family will receive friends Friday, Oct. 25, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home.

Dorothy May Hoosier Beamer

Dorothy May Hoosier Beamer, 92, of Bastian, Va., died Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2002, at Bluefield Regional Medical Center, Bluefield, W.Va.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Aug. 30, at 11 a.m. at the Laurel Fork Baptist Church, Rocky Gap, Va., with the Rev. Allen Mahan officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Bastian, Va.

She was born March 20, 1910, at Konnarock, Va., She was a member of the Laurel Fork Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Alexander and Emaline Pennington Huffman; her husbands, Arthur W. Hoosier and Benjamin V. Beamer; a son, James Hoosier; and daughters, Lucille Hoosier and Rena May Hoosier.

Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Marshall and Janet Hoosier of Salem, Va., Johnny and Colleen Hoosier of Salem, Va., Gerald and Nancy Hoosier of Bastian, Va., and Judy Hoosier of Rocky Gap, Va.; one stepdaughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Edwin Hall of Richmond, Va.; four stepsons and daughters-in-law, Donald and Stella Beamer of Alexandria, Va., Carl and Louise Beamer of Roanoke, Va., Ralph and Ingrid Beamer of Bristol, Tenn., and Edwin Beamer of Pulaski, Va.; 13 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, 10 step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.

Martha Jane Saunders Cobb

Martha Jane Saunders Cobb, 82, of Rocky Gap, Va., died Friday, March 28, 2003.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 1, at 1 p.m. at the Tynes Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church in the Dry Fork section of Rocky Gap, Va., with the Rev. Andrew Montgomery officiating. Interment will be in the Hoagan's Family Cemetery in Rocky Gap, Va.

She was born in Rocky Gap, Va., on Feb. 22, 1921, the 11th of 12 children of Powell and Linia Price Saunders. She was educated in the public schools of Rocky Gap, Va., and graduated from Genoa High School in Bluefield, W.Va. On Oct. 15, 1944, she married Jimmie A. Cobb of Portsmouth, Va. She was a member of the Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Jersey City, N.J. Prior to moving to her birthplace of Rocky Gap, Va., she served on the Willing Workers Committee, Pastor’s Aide Committee and the Scholarship Fund Committee. Her work continued when she joined Tynes Chapel A.M.E. Church in Rocky Gap, Va., working as president of the Women’s Home and Overseas Missionary Society, and chairman of the kitchen committee.

She was preceded in death by eight brothers, Eppie Saunders, James Saunders, Abe Saunders, Cernal Saunders, Fred Saunders, Moses Saunders, Flemming Saunders, and Archie Saunders; two sisters, Octavia Tynes and Ida Cecil; and a grandchild, Claudette Spann.

Survivors include her husband of 59 years, Jimmie A. Cobb; two daughters, Jacqueline Johnson and Mattie Long; two sons, Ralph A. Cobb Sr. and Vernon R. Cobb Sr.; seven grandchildren, Paulette Forte, Rubin Spann Jr., Carolyn Linia Cobb, Ralph A. Cobb Jr., Vernon R. Cobb Jr., Fredrick Dobson and Pastor Keith O. Johnson; four great- grandchildren, Anthony Forte Jr., Sean A. Cobb, Ashley L. Cobb, and Arriana Johnson; one sister, Freda Scruggs of Rocky Gap, Va.; two sisters-in-law, Estella Ferguson Saunders and Katherine Johnson Saunders; two daughters-in-law, Carolyn L. Cobb and Marjorie Luc Cobb; one son-in-law, Raymond Johnson; a special nephew, Connie T. Cecil; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, April 1, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. (service time) at the Tynes Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church.

Callie Odessa Bevins Green, 93, of Bland, Va., died Saturday, March 29, 2003, at Asbury Place, Wytheville, Va.

Funeral services will be held Monday, March 31, at 1 p.m. in the Highland Funeral Service Bland Chapel in Bland, Va., with the Rev. Steve Johnson officiating. Interment will be in the Bland Cemetery, Bland, Va.

She was born in Wise, Va.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Nye Green; her parents William Lee and Polly Russell Bevins; six sisters and one brother.

Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, John R. and Elizabeth Green of Wytheville, Va., Bobby and Kathy Green of Bland, Va., and James "Jimmy" and Jean Hayes of Tarpon Springs, Fla.; one daughter, Anna R. Shope of Nokesville, Va.; two brothers, Harmon Bevins of Mineral, Va., and Russell Bevins of Pound, Va.; one sister, Ruth Layne of Edinburg, Va.; 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

George Dale Johnson

The Rev. George Dale Johnson, 76, of Galax, Va., died Sunday, March 30, 2003, in the Waddell Nursing Home, Galax, Va.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 2, at 11 a.m. at the Highland Funeral Service Bland Chapel, Bland, Va., with the Rev. Charles Starks, the Rev. Doug Hyndrich and the Rev. Lee Ellis officiating. Interment will be in the Red Oak Cemetery, Ceres, Va. Graveside military rites will be conducted by Grover King Post No. 1115, V.F.W.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and served on the U.S.S. Taussig, Southwest PAC, 746 in Germany and France. He entered the (United) Methodist ministry in 1962 and served as pastor in Ceres, Va., Bland, Va., Cripple Creek, Va., Wytheville, Va., Galax, Va., Morristown, Tenn., and Chatham Hill, Va. He was a member of the Grover King Post No. 1115, V.F.W., a charter member of the Ruritan Club in Ceres, Va., member of the Bland Kiwanis Club and the Fairview Ruritan Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel Clark Johnson and Isabell Shumaker Johnson Beck Hawkins; two stepfathers, Henry Beck and John Hawkins; and two brothers, Ralph Johnson and Ray Johnson.

Survivors include his wife, Etoile B. Johnson; one son and daughter-in-law, Chuck and Becky Johnson of Bland, Va.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Jim Steffey of Gate City, Va., and Debbie and Mike Cassell of Nicklesville, Va.; three granddaughters, Erin Johnson, Beth Harden and Regan Johnson; three grandsons, Samuel Cassell, Ben Johnson and Daniel Cassell; two stepgranddaughters, Amanda Steffey and Malinda Steffey; one sister, Ruth Matthias of Ft. Worth, Texas; one half sister and half brother-in-law, Joyce and Bob Perry of Temple, Ga.; three half brothers and half sister-in-law, Williams Beck of Maryland, the Rev. Louis Beck of West Virginia, and Donald and Judith Hawkins of San Angelo, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

Roy P. Smith, 83, of Wytheville, Va., died Friday, March 28, 2003.

A graveside service will be held Monday, March 31, at 11 a.m. in the West End Cemetery in Wytheville, Va., with the Rev. Robert "Bob" Billingsley officiating. Graveside military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post No. 9.

He was born in Pulaski, Va. He was a retired U.S. Navy veteran, having served in World War II, and was retired from United Air Lines.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Martha Smith; his parents, Luther and Annie White Smith; two sisters, Alma Jane Smith and Nellie Sacks; three brothers, Robert Guy Smith, David Lee Smith and Ernest Wade Smith.

Survivors include his wife, Jane Lundy Smith; one son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Chris Smith of Atlanta, Ga.; two stepsons and stepdaughters-in-law, Roy Jefferson and Terry Headley of Stafford, Va., and James Wade and Michelle Headley of Giles County, Va.; two sisters, Betty Scholl of Arizona, and Marcella Mize of Beckley, W.Va.; three brothers, Clyde Smith of Joppa, Md., Martin Smith of Beckley, W.Va., and Jimmy Smith of Bland, Va.; and six grandchildren.

Edward P. "Honey Bear" Blankenship

Edward P. "Honey Bear" Blankenship, 72, of Wytheville, Va., died Thursday, Aug. 7, 2003, at Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va.

Graveside service will be held Sunday, Aug. 10, at 3 p.m. at the Clinch Valley Memorial Cemetery, Richlands, Va.

He was an employee of the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Department of Forestry serving from Montana to Tongass National Forest in Southeast Alaska for 18 1/2 years. He came to the Wytheville Ranger District in 1979 retiring in 1992 after serving 36 1/2 years. He graduated from Richlands High School in 1948, Bluefield College and West Virginia University and did postgraduate work at Oregon State University. He served as a military policeman in the U.S. Army, He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 9, Moose Lodge of Wytheville, Va., and Big Walker Game & Fish Club.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Eugene "Bliss" Blankenship, Charles R. "Coonie" Blankenship, Harold Ray Blankenship and Jack Brittain Blankenship Sr.

Survivors include his wife of 25 years, L. Rebecca Tarter Blankenship of Wytheville, Va.; a daughter and son-in-law, Beverly Lynn and Jimmy Farmer of Rosedale, Va.; a grandson, Jared C. Farmer; a sister, Phyllis Ruth Blankenship of Richlands, Va.; three sisters-in-law, Patsy Fay Fleming of Wytheville, Va., Mrs. Jack (Patty) Blankenship of Tazewell, Va., and Ms. Bliss (Florene) Blankenship of Richlands, Va.; two brothers-in-law, Tandy Jack Fleming of Boise, Idaho, and William R. Fleming of Roanoke, Va.; a special nephew and his spouse, Michael Keith and Marcella Blankenship; special great-nieces and great-nephews, Caroline Blankenship, Avery Blankenship, Elliott Blankenship and Simon Edward Blankenship; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; a constant companion, Bozo; and his beagles.

Clara Josephine Gambrel, 90, of Mason, Ohio, died Monday, July 7, 2003, at Cedar Village Nursing Home in Mason, Ohio.

Funeral services were held Friday, July 11, at 2 p.m. at the Holding Funeral Home Chapel in Big Stone Gap, Va., with the Rev. Ronnie Mutter officiating. Burial was in Laurel Grove Cemetery, Norton, Va.

She was born in Bland, Va., but lived most of her life in Ohio. She was of the Pentecostal faith.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Edward Gambrel; her parents, William G. and Amanda F. Hancock Pauley; a son, Benny Gambrel; a daughter, Anna Mae Gambrel; a stepson, Bill Gambrel; two brothers, Charlie H. Pauley and Perry J. Pauley; and two sisters, Edith Kitts and Anna Belle Harold.

Survivors include five daughters, Jean Humphrey of Xenia, Ohio, Anna Palmer of Lebanon, Ohio, Brenda Humerick of Miamisburg, Ohio, Linda Hudgel of Blue Creek, Ohio, and Judy Corbean of McArthur, Ohio; four sons, Walter Gambrel of Irvine, Ky., Burley Gambrel of Franklin, Ohio, Robert "Bobby" Gambrel of Xenia, Ohio, and William "Bud" Gambrel of Peebles, Ohio; 22 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ellen Dryden Jones of Bristol, Tenn., and Ruth Richardson of Bland, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

Anna Christine Mabry Nester

Anna Christine Mabry Nester, 75, of Doe Run Road, Max Meadows, Va., died Sunday, Sept. 1, 2002, in Asbury Center at Birdmont, Wytheville, Va.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, Sept. 5, at 6 p.m. at the Galena Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Vaughn Earl Hartsell officiating.

She was born in Austinville, Va., and was a member of Galena Presbyterian Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Shirley Arlis Nester; her parents, Louis Burton Mabry and Fannie Jackson Colgate Mabry; a son, Alan H. Nester; a sister, Mary Sowers; and a brother, Dick Mabry.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Terry Lee and Jane Testerman Nester of Max Meadows, Va.; stepsons and stepdaughters-in-law, Larry Steven and Linda Peglow Nester of Hampton, Va., and Kyle Walton and Barbara Faris Nester of Max Meadows, Va.; a brother, Charles W. "Hyde" Mabry of Norfolk, Va.; and six grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the residence of her son Terry Nester at any time. There will be no visitation at the funeral home.

Wilma "Jean" Andreasen

Wilma "Jean" Andreasen, 68, of Bland, Va., died Sunday, April 27, 2003.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, April 29, at 7 p.m. at Newberry Funeral Home in Bland, Va. with the Rev. Donald White officiating.

She was born in Lynn, Mass., and lived there until moving to Miami, Fla. at the age of 8. She lived, married and raised six children in Miami, Fla. She moved to Bland, Va., in 1996. She was a volunteer at a Miami, Fla. hospital for several years.

She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Olav "Norman" Andreasen; four daughters, Karen Andreasen of California, Laurie Dupree of Georgia, Amy Clark, and Elizabeth Malmberg, both of Virginia; two sons, Norman Andreasen and Christopher Andreasen, both of Florida; and six grandchildren, Kimberly Burgess, Stormy Andreasen, Sara Malmberg, Samantha Dupree, Kristina Dupree and Dylan Dupree.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, April 29, from 6 to 7 p.m. (service time) at the Newberry Funeral Home.

Elizabeth Hurt Manuel

Elizabeth Hurt Manuel, 74, of Wytheville, Va., died Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002, at her residence.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 2, at 1 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel, Wytheville, Va. Interment will be in the West End Cemetery, Wytheville, Va. She was the daughter of the late William and Lauria Dillow Hurt and was retired from Alco Controls.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Gary L. and Rhonda Manuel of Waynesboro, Va., and Boo and Robin Manuel of Hermitage, Tenn.; two sisters, Henrietta Price of Wytheville, Va., and Patricia Wilkinson of Virginia; four grandchildren, Justin Manuel, Danny Manuel, April Manuel and Preston Manuel; and several nieces, nephews, special sister-in-law and friends.

The family will receive friends Friday, Nov. 1, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home.

Fay Harrison Lambert, 58, of Bland, Va., died Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 5, at 1 p.m. at the Highland Funeral Service Bland Chapel, Bland, Va., with the Rev. Doug Hyndrich officiating. Interment will be in the Morning Star Cemetery, Bland, Va. Bland Lodge No. 206, A.F. & A.M., will conduct graveside Masonic Rites.

He was a commercial loan officer, vice president of First Virginia Bank-Southwest and a member of Bland United Methodist Church. He served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Korea during the Vietnam Conflict. He was a past member of the Bland Board of Supervisors (1984-1992) and served as chairman for one term; a charter and lifetime member of Bland County Rescue Squad; member and chairman of Bland County Planning Commission; member and past master of Bland Masonic Lodge No. 206, A.F. & A.M.; member of Wythe Royal Arch Chapter, No. 51; member of the Lions Club of Bland, Va., and Wytheville, Va.; a past member of the Wythe County Community Hospital Board of Directors and served as chairman for one year; member of American Legion Miller T. Burton Post No. 20; and served as president for one year and vice president of the Wytheville-Wythe-Bland Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.

He was preceded in death by his father, Everett Harrison Lambert.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce Hall Lambert of Bland, Va.; three daughters and sons-in-law, Teresa Lynn Tolbert, Sheri T. and Norman Dillow, all of Bland, Va., and Rhonda Lambert and Daniel Wright of Greenville, S.C.; one son and daughter-in-law, Robert Harrison and Stacy Lambert of Charlotte, N.C.; his mother, Verdie Lambert Townley of Bland, Va.; a brother and sister-in-law, Garrett Wayne and Sue Lambert of Bland, Va.; six grandchildren, Ashley Dillow, Jessica Dillow, Victoria "Tori" Wright, Joshua Wright, Ryan Dillow and Alexandra "Allie" Wright; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Ray and Betty Hall of Rocky Gap, Va., and Rheta and Jerry Smith of Bluefield, W.Va.; and six nieces and nephews, Rita Lambert Childress, Charles Hall, Melissa Hall, Don Smith, Alice Smith and Tim Smith.

Ernest Freemond Loomis, 74, of Wytheville, Va., died Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003, in the Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Feb. 4, at 11 a.m. at the St. Paul United Methodist Church, Wytheville, Va., with the Rev. Dr. Donald E. Stansell, Dr. Charles Starks and Chaplain Rex Carter officiating. Interment will be in the Ridgedale Cemetery in the Chatham Hill community of Smyth County, Va.

He was born in Bluefield, W.Va., a son of the late William Anthony and Leah Catherine Boyd Loomis. He was a member of the St. Paul United Methodist Church, a retired first sergeant with the Virginia State Police with 35 years of service, a member of the retired Virginia State Police Association, and a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was also a member of the American Legion, Wythe Masonic Lodge No. 82 A.F. & A.M., and the Williamsburg Masonic Lodge No. 6 A.F. & A.M.

He is survived by his wife, Jane G. Loomis of Wytheville, Va.; one daughter and son-in-law, Susan L. and David C. Smith of Bluefield, W.Va.; a grandson, David Elijah Freemond Smith; one sister and brother-in-law, Evelyn and Harold Pippin of Aurora, Ill.; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, W.T. Jr. and Judith Gillespie of Broadford, Va.; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Phyllis and Wayne L. Cook of Roanoke, Va.; a special niece, Dayna Lyn C. Bandy of Roanoke, Va.; and several other nieces and nephews.
