Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Douglas Jasper Thomas

Douglas Jasper Thomas, 70, of Montcalm, W.Va., formerly of Bastian, Va., died Sunday, Jan. 5, 2003, in the Princeton Community Hospital, Princeton, W.Va.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 9, at 2 p.m. at the Bastian Union Church with the Rev. Lee McIntosh officiating. Interment will be at the Rose Hill Cemetery, Bastian, Va. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Bland and Giles American Legion and V.F.W. Posts.

He was born Sept. 16, 1932, at Bastian, Va. He served his country for 23 1/2 years in the U.S. Army and was a staff sergeant. He was commander of the Bland V.F.W. Post No. 7969 from 1985 to 1991.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jasper Earnest and Maggie Neal Thomas; a sister, Frances Hull; and a brother, Donald Thomas.

Survivors include one brother, William Arthur Thomas of Montcalm, W.Va.; two sisters, Jewell T. Richardson of La Belle, Fla., and Ruby T. Munsey of Montcalm, W.Va.; and three nieces and three nephews.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Jan. 8, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bastian Union Church.

Charles Anderson Tweedy Sr.

Charles Anderson Tweedy Sr., 56, of the Grapefield community in Bland County, Va., died Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002.

Funeral services were held Friday, Oct. 25, at 8 p.m. at Newberry Funeral Home in Bland, Va., with Pastor Jim Conley officiating. A private burial was held Saturday, Oct. 26, in Temple Hill Cemetery, Bland, Va.

Born April 1, 1946, he was a lifelong resident of this area. He was a member of the Hollybrook Church of Christ.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Teresa Tweedy; and his parents, William and Rosia Madeline Grant Tweedy.

Survivors include one son, Charles "Andy" Tweedy II of the home; three brothers and sisters-in-law, William "Bill" Tweedy of Tazewell, Va., Robert and Irene Tweedy of Taylorsville, N.C., and George and Margaret Tweedy of Spring Hill, Fla.; one sister, Margaret T. Gillespie of Tazewell, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

Newberry Funeral Home in Bland, Va., was in charge of the arrangements.

Raymond B. Davis

The Rev. Raymond B. Davis, 59, of Tampa, Fla., formerly of Bland, Va., died Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, in a Florida hospital.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Oct. 23, at 11 a.m. at Hopewell Funeral Home Chapel in Plant City, Fla. Interment was in Hopewell Memorial Gardens, Plant City, Fla. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Nov. 2, at 6 p.m. at the Bland Bible Church on Route 42 in the Slide area of the county, with Brother Dewayne Martin officiating.

He was born in Bland, Va., a son of the late Carl Davis and Bertie Harden. He moved to the Tampa, Fla., area in 1973. He had served time in the U.S. Army and was a carpenter.

He is survived by his wife, Miriam Davis of Tampa, Fla.; two sons, Lee Davis of Richlands, Va., and Christopher Davis of War, W.Va.; two daughters, Lynn Mayle of Plant City, Fla., and Rebecca Hewitt of Tazewell, Va.; four brothers, Glenn Davis of Cherrypoint, N.C., Teddy Davis, Johnny Davis and Carl Davis Jr., all of Bland, Va.; 13 grandchildren, one great-grandson, several nieces and nephews.

Hopewell Funeral Home in Plant City, Fla., was in charge of the arrangements.

Effie Haga Pennington

Effie Haga Pennington, 90, of Bastian, Va., died Sunday, Nov. 3, 2002, in the Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Nov. 5, at 10 a.m. at the Highland Funeral Service Bland Chapel, Bland, Va., with the Rev. Lee Macintosh officiating. Interment will follow in the Azen Church Cemetery, Konnarock, Va.

She was born in Smyth County, Va., a daughter of the late John Wesley and Nancy Pennington Haga. She was a member of the Bastian Union Church, Bastian, Va.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Banner Pennington, four sisters and one brother.

Survivors include her husband, Fred Pennington of the home; two daughters and son-in-law, Eleanor and Garland Dillow of Bastian, Va., and Beverely Miller of Wytheville, Va.; one stepdaughter and stepson-in-law, Geraldine and Wayne Perry of Bastian, Va.; two stepsons and stepdaughter-in-law, John Pennington of Bastian, Va., and Russell and Nancy Pennington of Bastian, Va.; one brother, Clarence Haga of Bastian, Va.; three sisters, Winnie Thompson of Mullins, W.Va., Martha Hoosier of Bastian, Va., and Mary Blevins of Chilhowie, Va.; four grandchildren, Pam Gore of Bastian, Va., Rita Bradshaw of Bland, Va., Penny Bowman of King, N.C., and Ronald Miller of Bland, Va.; four stepgrandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, four great-stepgrandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Monday, Nov. 4, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bastian Union Church, Bastian, Va.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donation may be made to the Bastian Union Church Building Fund.

Alene Nicewonder Stowers

Alene Nicewonder Stowers, 72, of Bland, Va., died Monday, Nov. 4, 2002, in Kegley Manor, Bastian, Va.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Nov. 6, at 11 a.m. at the Trinity United Methodist Church, Bland County, Va., with the Rev. Doug Hyndrich officiating. Interment will be in the Stowers Cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time.

She was born in Bland, Va., a daughter of the late Andrew and Lilia Thompson Nicewonder. She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, was a 4-H All Star and active in the community.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Andrew Nicewonder Jr.

Survivors include her husband, Seldon Stowers Sr. of the home; a son, Seldon Stowers Jr. of Bland, Va.; two grandsons, Joseph Stowers and James Stowers, both of Ceres, Va.; four sisters, Hazel Beasley of Greensboro, N.C., Rosa Hall of Pulaski, Va., Dolly Hart of Payson, Ariz., and Freeda Brookman of Taylorsville, N.C.; a sister-in-law, Meda Dalton of Dublin, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, Nov. 5, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Highland Funeral Service Bland Chapel in Bland, Va.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorial donations to the Bland County Rescue Squad.

Ricky Wayne Cox, 42, of Ceres, Va., died Friday, June 27, 2003.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 1, at 2 p.m. in the Highland Funeral Service Bland Chapel, Bland, Va., with the Rev. Doug Hyndrich officiating. Interment will follow in the Bethany United Methodist Church Cemetery in Ceres, Va.

He was born in Wythe County, Va. He was a member of the Ceres Volunteer Fire Department and attended Bethany United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James Alfred and Ruby Lucille Starling Cox; and a brother, David Michael Cox.

Survivors include one daughter, Mary Nicole Cox of Saltville, Va.; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Janet Cox of Galax, Va., Darlene and Joe Lambert of Ceres, Va., and Faye and David Hill of Fries, Va.; five brothers and sisters-in-law, Paul Eugene and Sandra Cox of Omaha, Neb., James Darnell Cox of Bastian, Va., Blake and Diann Cox of Rural Retreat, Va., David and Darlene Cox, and Norman and Lynn Cox, all of Bastian, Va.; special friends, Patricia Martin of Narrows, Va., and David King of Ceres, Va.; and several nieces, nephews and other close relatives.

The family will receive friends Monday, June 30, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Highland Funeral Service Bland Chapel in Bland, Va.

Grat McNutt "Mac" Muncy

Grat McNutt "Mac" Muncy, 79, of Ft. Washington, Md., formerly of Bland, Va., died Thursday, June 26, 2003, in Southern Maryland Medical Center of Heart Failure.

Funeral services will be held Monday, June 30, at 11:30 a.m. in the Highland Funeral Service Bland Chapel in Bland, Va., with the Rev. Joel Thornton officiating. Interment will follow in the Bland Cemetery, Bland, Va.

He was born in Kentucky. He was a member of the Bland Lutheran Presbyterian Church and the Masonic Lodge in Mt. Rainier, Md.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Grat Mustard Muncy and Mary E. McNutt Muncy.

Survivors include two sisters, Geraldine Muncy of Ft. Washington, Md., and Nancy M. Smith of Clinton, Md.; one brother, Robert P. Muncy of Fayetteville, N.C.; four nieces, one nephew, five great-nephews, one great-niece and many friends.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorial donations to the Bland Presbyterian Church Building Fund or the charity of one's choice.

William Franklin Ring, 68, of Bastian, Va., died Sunday, June 29, 2003.

Nannie Clara Welch

Nannie Clara Welch, 93, of Wytheville, Va., died Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 2, at 2 p.m. at the Cedar Bluff Baptist Church with the Rev. Eddie Beck officiating. Interment will be at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Groseclose, Va.

She was born in Smyth County, Va. She was a member of the Cedar Bluff Baptist Church in Atkins, Va., for 51 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Blaine Welch; her parents, Newton and Margaret Vaught Blankenbeckler; a granddaughter, Carolyn Gullion; a son-in-law, Garland "Shorty" Buck; great-grandson, Brian Buck; and great-great-grandson, Dalton Tolbert.

Survivors include one daughter, Margaret M. "Madeline" Buck of Wytheville, Va.; six grandchildren and spouses, Barbara and Adrian Hilton of Rural Retreat, Va., Danny and Cathy Buck of Rural Retreat, Va., Barry Buck of Bland, Va., Joey and Trina Buck of Rural Retreat, Va., Susan and Jim Betz of Bland, Va., and Sid Gullion of Max Meadows, Va.; two sisters-in-law, Hallie Welch of Atkins, Va., and Mary Helen Welch of Richmond, Va.; 12 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and friends.

The family will receive friends Saturday, March 1, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home or at the homes of the grandchildren at any time.

The family suggests that donations may be made to the Cedar Bluff Baptist Church.

Leta Inez Neel Deacon, 82, of Ceres, Va., died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, Jan. 28, at 1 p.m. at the Highland Bland Funeral Chapel in Bland, Va., with Rick Beam officiating. A private inurnment will take place later.

She was born in Wythe County, Va., a daughter of the late Conley and Eula Brown Neel. She was a member of the Red Oak Union Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Mortimer J. Deacon; and a brother, Herman Robert Neel.

Survivors include two brothers and sister-in-law, Vernon and Doris Neel of Bland, Va., and Carroll Neel of Ceres, Va.; one sister and brother-in-law, Grace and Harold Foglesong of Rural Retreat, Va.; one sister-in-law, Edith Neel of Niceville, Fla.; three nieces; four nephews; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, Jan. 28, from noon until service time at Highland Bland Funeral Chapel in Bland, Va.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Southwest Virginia or the Bland County Volunteer Rescue Squad.

Herman R, Neel, 79, died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, in Niceville, Fla.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Jan. 29, at 2 p.m. at the home of Pat and Beverly Byrnes in Niceville, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Conley and Eula Brown Neel; and a son, Steven Neel.

Survivors include his wife, Edith Cox Neel of Niceville, Fla.; one daughter, Cathy Bumgarner of Rural Hall, N.C.; two sons, Jeff Neel of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Joe Neel of High Point, N.C.; three granddaughters; one great-grandchild; two stepdaughters; one stepson; two stepgrandchildren; two sisters and brother-in-law, Leta Deacon of Asbury Place, Wytheville, Va., and Grace and Harold Foglesong of Rural Retreat, Va.; and two brothers and sister-in-law, Vernon and Doris Neel of Bland, Va., and Carroll Neel of Ceres, Va..

Michael Aaron Wright

Michael Aaron Wright, 17, of Bland, Va., died Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, at his home.

Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 27, at 1 p.m. at A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home in White Gate, Va., with Pastor Jim Conley officiating. Burial will be in the Shiloh Cemetery, Hollybrook, Va.

He was born Dec. 14, 1985, in Bluefield, W.Va.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Arthur Cleveland Wright; and his great-grandmother, Edna Gusler Wright.

Survivors include his parents, Martin Cleveland and Sherilyn Parks Wright of Bland, Va.; two sisters, Heather Wright and Stephanie Wright, both of Bland, Va.; his maternal grandmother and stepgrandfather, Maxine and Bill Childress of Rocky Gap, Va.; his maternal grandfather and stepgrandmother, Bill and Carol Parks of Bedford, Va.; paternal grandmother and stepgrandfather, Ilene Wright and Gary McGrady of Gratton, Va.; great-grandmother, Mary Jackson of Tazewell, Va.; great-grandfather, George Wright of Bland, Va.; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
