Robert E. Cook

Robert "Bobby" E. Cook, 69, of Woodstock, died Friday, Oct. 24, 2003, at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital in Woodstock.

Mr. Cook was born March 19, 1934, in Shenandoah County, and was a son of the late Ray Jesse and Margaret Barton Cook.

He retired from Peter Muhlenberg Middle School, where he was a member of the school family and served for over nine years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing bingo.

Survivors include his companion, Virginia Davis of Woodstock; two sisters, Katherine Sine of Woodstock and Peggy Sue Lam of Penn Laird; and a brother, William Lowell Cook of Woodstock.

The Rev. Barbara Rhodes will conduct a graveside service 2 p.m. Tuesday at Massanutten Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 this evening at the Dellinger Funeral Home in Woodstock.

William F. Riley

William "Jim" Franklin Riley, 69, of 4627 Grove Hill River Road in Shenandoah, died Saturday, Oct. 25, 2003.

Mr. Riley was born March 1, 1934, in Page County, and was the son of the late Floyd Nelson Riley and Nellie Frances Hill Riley.

He was a self-employed concrete finisher for 40 years.

Survivors include a daughter, Denise Fuqua of Bland; a son, Michael Cubbage of Shenandoah; a companion, Fonda Lou Painter of Shenandoah; two stepsons, Kevin Painter of Anchorage, Alaska and Kerry Painter of Stanley; a sister, Elizabeth Riley Langhorn of Louisa; two grandchildren and four stepgrandchildren.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Bradley Funeral Home in Luray. Burial will be at Beahm’s Chapel Cemetery in Luray.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home or at the home of Kerry Painter, 1288 Piney Woods Road in Stanley.

Harlan A. Senger

Harlan Andes Senger, 86, husband of Mary V. (Coffman) Senger, of 253 Lake Drive, Greenville, died at 5:34 p.m. Friday (Oct. 24, 2003) in the Augusta Medical Center, Fishersville.

He was born on Sept. 18, 1917, in Akron, Ohio, a son of the late Buford C. and Mary Elva (Reed) Senger. During World War II, he served with the U. S. Army Medical Corps.

Mr. Senger was the founder and co-owner, along with his wife, of Senger’s Mountain Lake Camping Resort.

He was a member of Pine’s Chapel Presbyterian Church and a former member of Waynesboro Second Presbyterian Church, where he held all of the various church offices.

As the last founding member of the Waynesboro First Aid Crew, he served in all the officer positions. He was a life member of the Waynesboro First Aid Crew and the Virginia Association of Volunteer Rescue Squads. Also, he was the fourth member inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Virginia Association of Volunteer Rescue Squads.

In addition to his wife of 58 years, family members include two sons and daughters-in-law, Earl P. and Mary Freeman Senger of Greensboro, N.C., and Kenneth W. and Julia Senger of Greenville; a sister, Janet McCoy of Harrisonburg; and two grandsons, Matthew W. Senger of Fairbanks, Alaska, and Mark A. Senger at home.

A service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday (Oct. 27, 2003) in the Henry Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Robert D. Goshorn. Burial will follow in the Augusta Memorial Park.

Active pallbearers will be the members of the Waynesboro First Aid Crew and the Pines Chapel Presbyterian Church.

The family received friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Waynesboro First Aid Crew, P.O. Box 1427, Waynesboro, Va. 22980 or to the Pines Chapel Presbyterian Church Manse Fund, P.O. Box 581, Greenville, Va. 24440.

Ida E. Curry

Ida Elizabeth Smallwood Curry, 93, of Grottoes, died Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003, at Harrisonburg Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Funeral arrangements were pending Sunday night at the Lindsey Funeral Home in Weyers Cave.

Garnett W. Smith

Garnett W. Smith, 74, of Harrisonburg, died Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg.

Funeral arrangements were pending Sunday night at the Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg.

Elmer T. Kramer

Elmer Thomas Kramer, 85, of Harrisonburg, died Saturday, Oct. 25, 2003, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg.

Mr. Kramer was born Jan. 4, 1918, in Dayton, Ohio, and was the son of the late Elmer W. and Mary Stauble Kramer.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army in July 1942 and was a first sergeant with the Maintenance Battalion and Ohio 737th Ordinance, serving in New Guinea and the Philippines. He was past president of the Harrisonburg/Rockingham Chamber of Commerce and was one of the founders of the United Way in Harrisonburg. He was past president of Shenandoah Valley Travel and the Lion Club. He was a member of the Moose Club, UCT, VFW Post 632, the greater Madison Duke Club, the Knights of Columbus, and Stonewall Jackson Boy Scouts.

Mr. Kramer was a longtime member of the Spotswood Country Club and treasurer of the Virginia National Council of Christian and Jews and was a past board member of the Youth for Christ. He was one of the organizers of the Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast and was on the advisory board of Blue Ridge College for 20 years for the machine shop and diesel school.

He had been a bank director at Valley National Bank and Rockingham Heritage Bank. He served on the Harrisonburg Electric Commission for seven years and on the Harrisonburg/Rockingham social services for seven years and was recently on the board of Friendship Industries.

Mr. Kramer was the first treasurer for Gemeinschaft and was on the board for eight years. He was the first president for the Harrisonburg/Rockingham Automobile Dealers Association and was a graduate and first president of the Dale Carnegie Club. He was the manager and co-owner of Highway Motors for 33 years and treasurer at Parts Inc. for 39 years. Among his many awards include the Virginia Truck Dealer of the Year, Lions Humanitarian, and the Boy Scout Distinguished Citizen award. He was a member of the Automotive Hall of Fame and was employed by International Harvestor Truck Division for 16 years in Dayton, Ohio, Cincinnati, and Richmond, Va. He was a member of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and was a commentator and usher and until recently participated in the social ministry and many fund drives. He was appointed as the first president of the Parish Board.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Rita Meyer Kramer, whom he married Feb. 14, 1942; 10 children, Cecelia Phelan of Bridgewater, Martha Uebelher of Denver, Colo., Gregory Kramer, Julia Rader, Monica Frackelton, Ellen Shackelford and Raymond Kramer, all of Harrisonburg, Larry Kramer of Midlothian, Tony Kramer of Fredericksburg, and Joseph Kramer of Albany, N.Y.; a sister, Mary Ellen Wesselman of Cincinnati, Ohio; 22 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Father Jim Gallagher will conduct a Funeral Mass 11 a.m. Thursday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens near Harrisonburg.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the church with a prayer service at 6 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to Blessed Sacrament Social Ministry, 154 North Main St., Harrisonburg, Va. 22802 or a charity of choice.

Arrangements are by the Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg.

Raelyn E. Shifflett

Raelyn Elisabeth Shifflett, 6, of Tuttle, Okla., died Friday, Oct. 24, 2003, at Children’s Hospital in Oklahoma City, Okla., following an accident while riding horses with her family.

She was born Dec. 27, 1996, in Oklahoma City and was the daughter of Forrest Wayne Shifflett and Amy Elisabeth Waller Shifflett.

She lived in Tuttle all her life and was a first-grader in Tuttle public schools. She enjoyed singing and going to children’s church at the Mission Holiness Church in Amber, Okla.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by a brother, Chase Shifflett at home; her grandparents, Kenneth and Carolyn Waller and the Rev. Randall and Mary Shifflett, all of Tuttle; and great-grandparents, Bernice Holley of Tuttle, Aumilda Waller of Mansfield, Mo., and Charles and Catherine Hilliard of Stanley.

The Rev. Randy Perry will conduct the funeral 2 p.m. today at the Tuttle Assembly of God. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery in Tuttle.

Visitation was Sunday at Wilson-Little Funeral Home in Newcastle, Okla.

Memorial donations may be made to the House of Compassion Orphanage in Haiti, c/o Amber Mission Holiness, P.O. Box 217, Amber, Okla. 73004.

Leon H. Diehl

Leon Huff Diehl, 84, a resident of 343 Keezletown Road in Mount Sidney, died at 8:30 Monday morning, Oct. 27, 2003, at his home.

A son of the late Earl and Icie Huff Diehl, he was born on June 1, 1919, in the Burketown community of Augusta County. He resided in Hershey, Pa. for a short time, but lived the remainder of his life in Weyers Cave. Mr. Diehl had worked at Duplan and later at DuPont in Waynesboro for 39 years prior to his retirement in 1977. He was also a farmer and was a member of the Pleasant Valley Church of the Brethren, where he taught Sunday school. He was also a member of the Weyers Cave Ruritan Club for 49 years.

In 1940, he married his first wife, Mary Lee Furr, who preceded him in death in May 1978. In February 1980, he married Helen Whitmore, who survives.

Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, Donald G. Diehl and wife, Joyce, of Mount Sidney; five grandchildren, Wendy Sheets of Chapel Hill, N.C., Tonya D. Witherow and husband, Rick, of Mechanicsville, Angie S. Horowitz and husband, Danny, of Bixby, Okla., David Sheets of Norman, Okla., and D.J. and Autumn Diehl of Mount Sidney. He also leaves two stepdaughters, Diane C. Williams and husband, Leonard, of Harrisonburg and Denise C. Sager and husband, Kenneth, of Timberville; three stepgrandchildren, Jennifer Williams, Christopher Williams and Karen Sager; four great-grandchildren, Avery and Adrien Witherow and Kaitlyn and Kendra Horowitz; a stepgreat-grandson, Cooper D. Williams; three brothers, William "Bill" Diehl and wife, Mildred, of New Market, Sterling Diehl and wife, Katherine, and Earl Diehl Jr. and wife, Bettie, all of Maryland.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Dianne D. Sheets, a sister, Evelyn D. Crosby, and brother, Dallas Diehl.

Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday from the Pleasant Valley Church of the Brethren with the Rev. Matthew Fike and Kelly Meyerhoeffer officiating. Private burial will be held earlier in the adjacent cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 until 8 Wednesday evening at the Lindsey Weyers Cave Funeral Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Weyers Cave Fire Department in his memory.

Ida E. Curry

Ida Elizabeth Smallwood Curry, 93, of 4284 Rockfish Road in Grottoes, died Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003, at Harrisonburg Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Mrs. Curry was born Oct. 26, 1910, in Augusta County, and was the daughter of the late Osborne Hamilton Smallwood and Ida Johnson Smallwood.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Pleasant Valley Church of the Brethren.

Her husband, Charles E. Curry, preceded her in death June 16, 1966.

She is survived by two sons, Cletus E. Curry of Grottoes and Donnie W. Curry of Weyers Cave; three grandchildren and five great-grandsons.

The Rev. Matthew Fike will conduct the funeral 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Lindsey Funeral Home in Weyers Cave. Burial will follow at Edgewood Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 this evening at the funeral home.

Emma B. Hansbrough

Emma B. Hansbrough, 87, of Shenandoah, died Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg.

Mrs. Hansbrough was born Sept. 10, 1916, in Hagerstown, Md., and was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Pruitt.

She graduated from Shenandoah High School in 1934. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Christian Church in Shenandoah.

On June 4, 1936, she married Phillip Ray Hansbrough, who preceded her in death Feb. 19, 1997.

She is survived by two sons, Bill Hansbrough of Shenandoah and Bob Hansbrough of Harrisonburg; a daughter, Beth Chenault of Atlanta, Ga.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Jim Perry will conduct the funeral 3 p.m. today at the First Christian Church. Burial will be at Rest Haven Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shenandoah Rescue Squad, 544 Fourth St., Shenandoah, Va. 22849.

Arrangements are by the Kyger Funeral Home in Shenandoah.

Nellie C. Huffman

Nellie C. Huffman, age 95, of Shenandoah, died on Monday, Oct. 27, 2003, at the Harrisonburg Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Mrs. Huffman was born on Feb. 29, 1908, and was the daughter of John M. and Cremora (Bowman) Shuler.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Vernon L. Huffman.

Nellie was a longstanding member of St. Peters Lutheran Church in Shenandoah and was a member of A.A.R.P.

Survivors include two sons, Bob Huffman and wife, Jean, of Harrisonburg, Jim Huffman and wife, Jo Ann, of Harrisonburg; four grandchildren, Mark Huffman and wife, Debbie, Chris Huffman and wife, Dee Anna, Barbara Mitchell and husband, Gary, and Linda Strawderman and husband, Frank. She is also survived by six great-grandchildren, David, Aaron, Sarah, Dylan, Adam and Jason.

Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2003, at 2 p.m. at the St. Peters Lutheran Church in Shenandoah with the Rev. James Daley officiating. Burial will follow at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Cemetery in Shenandoah.

The family will receive friends at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. Friends may also call at the homes of her sons.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Peters Lutheran Church, 413 Central Avenue, Shenandoah, Va. 22849.

Garnett W. Smith

Garnett William Smith, 74, of Harrisonburg, died Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Smith was born Feb. 23, 1929, in Rockingham County, and was a son of the late John and Cora Knicely Smith.

He was a lifelong resident of Rockingham County and attended school in Mount Crawford. He had been employed at Southern States, Harrisonburg Motor Express and Coiner Parts.

On April 8, 1950, he married Dorothy Marie Hawkins, who survives.

Also surviving are five daughters, Alice Harper and husband, Grover, of Harrisonburg, Catherine Caplinger and husband, Bob, of Bridgewater, Susan Coffey and husband, Jim, of Rockbridge, Mary King of Weyers Cave, Sara Smith and fiancé, Michael Reday of McGaheysville; three sons, John Smith and wife, Denise, of Harrisonburg, Willy Smith and wife, Bonnie, of Pompano Beach, Fla., Samuel Smith and wife, Lisa, of Harrisonburg; two sisters, Jean Pritchett and Lola Curry, both of Verona; one brother, Glenn Smith of Burketown; one half sister, Olie Foster of Sangersville; 22 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

The Rev. David Lagerveld will conduct the funeral service 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2003, at the Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg. Burial will follow at the Mount Crawford Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the National Stroke Association, 9707 E. Easter Lane, Englewood, Calif. 80112.
