Virginia I.P. Haines
Virginia Irene Printz Haines, a longtime Herndon resident who was active in the town and the mother of four children who are community leaders today, died Dec. 17 at her home on Quincy Street. She was 91 years old.
Mrs. Haines was born in Stanley, Va., in Page County on Feb. 21, 1915, to Mamie Florence Foltz and Raymond Carson Printz. She grew up on several dairy farms in Loudoun and Fairfax counties looking out on what is now Dulles Airport and Reston, with her sister, Eloise Printz Updike.
She attended school on the site of Herndon Middle School, where her children and some of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren have also attended school.
As a farm girl in Herndon in the mid-1930s she would dress in high fashion for a shopping excursion in Washington, D.C. In December 1931, at the age of 16, she traveled to Frederick, Md., against her father's wishes but with the support of her mother, and eloped with Maurice "Mike" Haines who was from a neighboring farm.
They lived in several historic houses in Herndon with son Gary. After the birth of daughter Patsy, they purchased the home on Quincy Street in 1941 for less than $2,000. In the mid-1950s, she was blessed with two more daughters, Connie and Debbie. She continued to live on Quincy Street for the rest of her life until she passed away surrounded by her family.
As with many women of that period, she dedicated her life to her husband, family and home during her 65-year marriage. Her pastimes included gardening, sewing, playing cards and traveling.
She was active in the Ladies Auxiliary of the Herndon Volunteer Fire Department and was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church. She and her husband were active with the Herndon Lions Club for more than 40 years. They were part of the Colvin Run Association, where they enjoyed dancing on Saturday nights.
Family was always the most important aspect of Mrs. Haines's life. She enjoyed having her parents close by when they purchased a home and property on Elden Street and her sister built a home on Spring Street.
As her children grew and had children and grandchildren of their own, she was fortunate to have most of them continue to live and work in the Herndon area. She enjoyed watching the family grow and become active in area businesses and community organizations.
Her son, Gary, has operated his Herndon business with his wife, Rosemary, next door to the family home for 50 years. He was active in the Herndon Optimist Club and the Herndon Volunteer Fire Department.
Her daughter Patsy manages the bank on Elden Street on the site of the Printz family home, has been active with the Herndon Women's Club for more than 25 years and lives in downtown Herndon with her husband, Tommy Bowers.
Her daughter Connie Hutchinson runs the Visitor's Center in the old train depot, sits on the Herndon Town Council and has been active in many civic organizations over the years.
Her daughter Debbie, who lives in Herndon with family and husband Kerry Butler, is a 25-year member and past matron of Herndon Chapter #55, Order of the Eastern Star that meets in the Masonic Lodge on Elden Street, one of the oldest establishments in town.
During the last 10 years, Mrs. Haines was fortunate to be aided by loving caretakers, celebrating her family and watching it grow.
She is survived by her four children, as well as grandchildren Robin Rust Mullet; David, Heidi, Chris and Michael Haines; Jason, Jacob, Jay and Jennifer Hutchinson; and Kevin, Katie, Keith and Kyle Butler; and great-grandchildren Ross and Abigale Mullet; Casey and Joseph Haines; Kaila and Hudson Haines; and Shoshana Hutchinson.
Arrangements were made by Adams-Green Funeral Home and interment was at Chestnut Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Trinity Presbyterian Church or Capital Hospice.
