Mervin Jackson
Mervin Jackson, 79, a life-long resident of Leesburg, died April 10, 2009, in Leesburg. Mr. Jackson was born Nov. 10, 1929, in Leesburg to the late Anna Jackson and Charles Stinger.
He worked with Whitmore General Store in Leesburg during the 1940s and 1950s. Mr. Jackson worked with Melpar industries in Falls Church before his career as a bindery specialist with the FBI at Washington, D.C., headquarters. He retired from the FBI in 1994 and became a public servant as a member of the Leesburg Planning Commission.
Mr. Jackson was elected to the Leesburg Town Council and during his term was appointed vice mayor. He was a past member of Providence Baptist Church, serving as superintendent, church treasurer and teaching Sunday school. In more recent years he was a faithful member at First Mount Olive Baptist Church until his decline in health. Mr. Jackson served on the Monroe Bank board of directors and enjoyed spending time with his family, umpiring baseball, fishing, hunting and offering his services where needed.
Mr. Jackson is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jean Ford Jackson of Leesburg; two daughters: Teresa Brooks of Herndon, Vernita Jackson of Sterling; one aunt: Ethel Jackson of Chester, PA; three brothers: Charles Stinger of Washington, DC, William (Berk) Stinger of Washington, DC, Rev. Harold S. Stinger of Hamilton, VA; two sisters: Marion Brooks of Washington, DC, Manzellar (Grace) Ford of Laurel, MD; two grandsons: Vernith and Anthony; one great granddaughter: Athena; three sister in laws; one brother in law and a host of other relatives and friends.
Friends called at First Mount Olive Baptist Church, 216 West Loudoun St. in Leesburg April 15 and 16. The Rev. Harold S. Stinger officiated. Interment was in Mt. Zion Community Cemetery in Leesburg.

Brian D. Gordon
Brian Douglas Gordon, 35, of Columbia, Md., died April 10, 2009. He was the son of Joyce T. Tate and the Rev. N.A. Tate of Reston, and Frederick D. Gordon of Hughesville, Md.
Mr. Gordon is survived by a sister, Indya Mungo (Lennie) of Columbia; two step-brothers, Norman (Che) Tate of Glen Burnie, Md., and Keith Tate of Fairfax; step-sister Keisha Tate of Bowie, Md.; a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and special friends.
Family will receive friends on Friday, April 17, from 9 a.m. until the service at 11 a.m. at Heritage Fellowship Church, 13515-C Dulles Technology Dr. in Herndon. Interment will be in Washington National Cemetery in Suitland, Md. Arrangements were by Lyles Funeral Service.

Diane M. Lewis
Diane M. Lewis, 61, of Sterling, died April 11, 2009. Mrs. Lewis was born in Pennsylvania. She was a systems analyst for Freddie Mac. Her husband Fred R. Lewis preceded her in death.
She is survived by her son, Mark S. Wallace, and grandchildren, Jack and Megan of Burke, Va., two brothers, John R. Schott and Paul C. Schott of Irwin, Pa., and a sister Mrs. Thomas (Kathy) Leonardo of Fairfax. Family received receive friends at Adams-Green Funeral Home in Herndon April 14, 2009, followed by a scripture service.
Memorials may be made to Lions Club International/Sight First, 300 West 22nd Street, Oak Brook, IL 60523.

Raeburn W. Updike
Raeburn "Ray" Winston Updike, 67, died of cancer on May 28, 2009 at Reston Hospital Center. Mr. Updike was a lifelong resident of Herndon. He was born in Washington, D.C., on March 16, 1942 to Ruth McGuire Updike and Winston Carvelle Updike.
Mr. Updike attended Herndon High School, where his classmates called him "Uppey." He was an athlete, played saxophone and was an active member of many clubs and organizations.
Mr. Updike graduated in 1960 and was a founding principal of District Automotive, an auto parts retailer in Washington, D.C. The business eventually led to the formation of Potomac Automotive Warehouse. Over the past 20 years Mr. Updike worked in property management and other business ventures and was most recently president of R.W. Updike and Co.
Mr. Updike was dedicated to his family, friends and community. He was a member and past worshipful master of the Herndon Masonic Lodge No. 264, as a longtime member of Herndon United Methodist Church.
Mr. Updike was the husband of 49 years of Alma Updike; father of Raeburn Updike, Russell Updike and Richard Updike and Renea Barta; brother of Wayne Updike and Kay Schlegel; grandfather of Ryan Barta, Eli Updike, Trent Updike; and a cousin, uncle and friend to many. He was loved by hundreds of family and friends who attended at his service at Herndon United Methodist Church on June 3, 2009.

Kenneth B. Roberts
Kenneth B. Roberts, 90, formerly of Herndon, died June 7, 2009 at his home in Manassas. He was born Sept. 22, 1918 in Green County, Va., to the late William B. and Elizabeth L. Roberts.
Mr. Roberts started out at a roadside stand selling fruit from Florida and apples from Virginia, building his business into the Kenny Roberts Garden Center in Fairfax. He supplied the Christmas trees and greenery for the White House.
Mr. Roberts was the husband of the late Alma Roberts; father of June Mayhugh of Manassas; Dennis Roberts of Bunnell, Fla., and the late Kenny Roberts, brother of Bob Roberts of Gainesville, grandfather of eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, and companion Mary Lou Roberts.
The family received friends June 10 at Adams-Green Funeral Home in Herndon, where funeral services were held June 11 at noon. Interment followed at National Memorial Park in Falls Church. Memorials may be made to Capital Hospice, 6565 Arlington Blvd., Suite 501, Falls Church, VA 22042.

Francene H. Robinson
Francene Harris Robinson, 58, of Reston died on June 5, 2009 at Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington.
She is survived by her husband Henry F. Robinson, sons Marques Robinson of Reston and Elliott Robinson of Silver Spring, Md.; three brothers Frank Harris Jr., of Richmond, Clinton (Jacqueline) Harris of Fayetteville, N.C., and Robert (Antoinette) Harris Sr., of Richmond; five sisters Ruby Brown of Newark, N.J., Virginia Harris of Los Angeles, Alice Wood of Richmond, Jeanette (Algernon) Moultrie of Philadelphia, and Geraldine Harris of Richmond; and many other relatives and friends.
Visitation was held June 11 from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Heritage Fellowship Church, 13515-C Dulles Technology Dr., Herndon, VA 20171. Funeral services are June 12 at 11 a.m. at Heritage Fellowship Church. Interment will be at Chestnut Grove Cemetery in Herndon.

Donald M. Toenjes
Donald M. Toenjes, a retired U.S. Air Force lieutenant colonel and resident of Reston, died Monday, Feb. 9, 2009.
He was the husband of Norma A. Toenjes, father of Trevor Toenjes (Candy) and Lori Mabus (Jeff); grandfather of Brenden and Kiley Mabus, Tucker and Summer Toenjes; and brother of Ervin Toenjes Jr. (Kay).
The family will welcome visitors at Murphy Funeral Home, 1102 W. Broad St., in Falls Church from 3 to 5 p.m. Feb. 16, and at Lewinsville Presbyterian Church, 1724 Chain Bridge Road in McLean, from 10 a.m. to noon on Feb. 17, when there will be a funeral service with reception in church hall following.
Full military honors and graveside services will be held at Arlington National Cemetery March 27 at 9 a.m. Guests should meet at the administrative building at 8:30.

Gertrude F. Kelly
Gertrude F. Kelly, 86, of Herndon, died Feb. 4, 2009.ÊShe moved to Herndon from Revere, Mass.
SheÊwas the mother of Karen Al-Kinani of Herndon and Suzanne Schreiber of Madison, N.J. She was the widow of Robert J. Kelly and the grandmother of Adam Al-Kinani. Funeral services and burial were in Revere.

Dorothy L. Radigan
Dorothy L. "Dottie" Radigan, 89, of Reston and formerly of Arlington, died Feb. 11, 2009, at Cameron Glen Nursing Center. She was born Aug. 23, 1919, in Quanicasee, Mich., to the late Clarence and Gladys Howell.
Mrs. Radigan was the wife of 66 years of the late Andrew T. Radigan, mother of Pat Radigan of North Myrtle Beach, S.C., Andy Radigan of Reston, Maureen Walters of Ashburn, Kathy Edwards and her husband Dick of Alexandria, Clare Radigan and her husband Martin Hurtado of Deltona, Fla. and Mike Radigan of Petersburg, Va., sister of Bill Howell of Essexville, Mich., grandmother of 14 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be private. Arrangements were by Adams-Green Funeral Home in Herndon.

Richard W. Gilbert
Richard Wayne Gilbert passed away at his home in Sterling on Feb. 4, 2009, after an extended illness. He was 66.
A native of Danville, Va., he was born Jan. 29, 1943, to Herman Hugh Gilbert and Helen Marie Gibson Gilbert. His childhood was spent in Danville, various military bases in the Washington, D.C., area, and in Germany and Okinawa, where his father served in the U.S. Army.
He was a graduate of Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville, Md., and the Danville Technical Institute, where he received a diploma in printing. He served the Central Intelligence Agency in Langley as a print shop foreman, and retired after 33 years of federal service.
Since his retirement, he has served as commissioner for the Suburban Friendship League, which provides scheduling services to soccer teams. He also coached youth soccer in Sterling and Herndon.
He is survived by four daughters: Marsha Stephens of Ashland, Va.; Melissa Cabrales of Arlington; Marla Hundley of Roanoke; and Marian Gilbert of Dublin, Va., and four grandchildren, Alexis and Gabriella Cabrales, Kyle Stephens, and Aiden Hundley. He is also survived by two brothers, Dennis Gilbert of Reedville, Va., and Greg Gilbert of Murrieta, Calif., and four sisters, Sandra Laird of Mesa, Ariz.; Joyce Gilbert of Chantilly; Joanne Griffin of Providence, N.C.; and Carol Pyrtle of Watkinsville, Ga. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Helen Gilbert, and his brother, Donald Gilbert.
A memorial service will be held at Adams-Green Funeral Home, 721 Elden St. in Herndon on Feb. 14, 2009, at 11 a.m., with visitation starting at 10:30. A celebration of life reception will follow the service.
