Dorothy Moorehead
Middleburg resident

Dorothy Virginia Moorehead, 83, of Middleburg died March 17, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. Moorehead is survived by three daughters, Shirley and Shelby Richardson of Middleburg and Charlotte Basil of Washington, D.C., and two sisters, Mary Basil of Middleburg and Dorothy Chetham of Washington, D.C.

The Rev. Howard M. Wilson and the Rev. Dr. E. Allen Stewart led a funeral service March 20 at Austin Grove United Methodist Church in Bluemont. Interment was in West View Cemetery in Upperville.

Ruth Bowman
Midland resident
Ruth E. Bowman, 82, of Midland died March 15, 1998, at Fauquier Hospital.

Mrs. Bowman was born in Tower City, Pa., on Nov. 6, 1915, the daughter of the late Charles Houtz and Margaret Kissinger Houtz. She was the widow of Walter S. Bowman and was also preceded in death by a daughter, Joan Louise Doggendorf.

She is survived by two daughters, Shirley Cook of Laingsburg, Mich., and Dolores B. Charnock of Midland; a son, James Bowman of Arnold, Md.; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

The Rev. John Staples led a funeral service March 18 at Moser Chapel in Warrenton. Interment was in Midland Cemetery.

Leonard Barron
Viewtown farmer

Leonard Routt Barron, 85, of Viewtown died March 15, 1998, at Fauquier Hospital.

Mr. Barron was born Feb. 6, 1913, in Fauquier County, a son of the late Jesse Joseph Barron and Lucy Mae Routt Barron. He was a farmer all his life and was retired from his gravel and lime business. He was a member of Amissville United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Lavinia Yancey Barron, who was a former teacher in Rappahannock County Public Schools for 41 years. His brother T.C. Barron of Viewtown also preceded him in death.

He is survived by his daughter, Deborah Flinchum of Viewtown, and two grandsons.

The Rev. Phillip Bailey and the Rev. Nancy B. White led a funeral service March 18 at Moser Funeral Home in Warrenton. Interment was in Hillcrest Memory Gardens in Jeffersonton.

L. Arthur Grove
Farmer/merchant

L. Arthur Grove, 77, of Somerville died March 14, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Grove was born March 10, 1921, in Somerville, a son of the late H. Lloyd and Mary Ann Ensor Grove. He was a retired farmer and merchant. He also served as postmaster at the Somerville post office from 1957 until 1983.

Mr. Grove served as a member of the board of directors of the Fauquier Livestock Exchange since its organization in 1962 until his death. He was elected to the board of directors of The Fauquier Bank in Warrenton in 1976 and served until his retirement from the board in 1996, when he became director emeritus.

He was also a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Somerville.

He is survived by his stepmother, Elsie Grove of Falmouth; four sisters: Eleanor Coppage of Midland, Evelyn Huffman of Hartwood, Helen Ruffner of Milford and Jeanette Miller of Bealeton; and a brother, Walter Grove of Somerville.

The Rev. Patricia W. Olson and the Rev. John Esaias led a funeral service March 17 at Moser Funeral Home. Interment was in the Ensor Family Cemetery in Somerville.

Marshall W. Butler
Mt. Zion Baptist deacon

Marshall W. Butler, 87, of Warrenton, died March 14, 1998, at Fauquier Hospital.

Born Aug. 10, 1910, in Broad Run, he was a son of the late Joseph and Eleanor Stewart Butler.

He worked as a butler and at Foxcroft School and Grand Union. Mr. Butler served as a deacon of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Warrenton.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Mercer Butler; two daughters, Delores B. Webster of Washington, D.C., and Evelyn B. Franey of Alexandria; two sons, Reginald Butler of Alexandria and Leo Butler of Germantown, Md.; two sisters, Eleanor Scroggins of New York, N.Y., and Lucy Brown of Warrenton; two brothers, Thurston Butler of West Chester, Pa., and David Butler of Louisa; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Moyer Foddrell led a funeral service March 18 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Warrenton. Interment was in Warrenton Cemetery.

'Jack' Martin
Automobile dealer

D. Jackson "Jack" Martin, 65, formerly of Warrenton, died March 9, 1998, at his St. Petersburg Beach, Fla., home.

Mr. Martin and his father, the late Dudley Martin, owned to automobile dealerships in Prince William County. "Jack" Martin in 1985 sold Dudley Martin Chevrolet in Manassas to his son Michael Martin and remained active in the business until retiring in 1989. He served as president and as a director of the Virginia Auto Dealers Association.

Mr. Martin served 1976 to 1980 on the Manassas City Council. He was a past president of the Prince William County-Greater Manassas Chamber of Commerce and the Manassas Host Lions Club. He was a 1953 graduate of the College of William and Mary and U.S. Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Thelma Jamison; five sons, D.J. Martin III of Chapel Hill, N.C., Michael Martin and Patrick Martin, both of Nokesville, John Martin and Joseph Martin, both of Manassas; a daughter, Jacklyn Martin Colas of Haymarket; a stepson, Dr. W.C.L. Jamison of Warrenton; a stepdaughter, Ali Jamison Summerell of Terra Verde, Fla.; 16 grandchildren, and two step-grandchildren.

A funeral will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 21, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Manassas. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the church.

James Fletcher
Attorney
James William "Jim Bill" Fletcher, 79, of Sperryville, died March 10, 1998, at his home, Thornton Hill.

Mr. Fletcher was born Oct. 19, 1918, the son of the late William Meade and Martha Ball Buckner Fletcher. He graduated from law school at T.C. Williams School of Law, University of Richmond, in 1940. He became licensed to practice law in the Commonwealth of Virginia on Oct. 19, 1939, on his 20th birthday; however, he could not practice law until he was 21. He began his law practice in Rappahannock County and practiced there his entire career, serving for a number of years as Commissioner of Accounts for Rappahannock County.

Mr. Fletcher served as chairman of the Seventh District Democratic Committee for 20 years. For years he also was chairman of Rappahannock County's Democratic Committee. From 1959 to 1963 he served as a member of the Spong Commission on Public Education. During the 1960s he was chairman of the three-member State Board of Elections. He was president of the Rappahannock County Bar Association and also served on the board of the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind in Staunton. He was a member of the board of the Rappahannock National Bank.

He was Master of Foxhounds of the Rappahannock Hunt for more than 30 years, and helped establish the Hunt's reputation in the fox hunting world as one of the hardest-riding anywhere.

He served for a number of years as tie-breaker for the Rappahannock County Board of Supervisors. He also enjoyed motorcycling, flying, horse racing, apple orchards and farming.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Thornton Fletcher. His survivors include his five children: Mildred Fletcher Slater of Upperville, Catherine Meade Fletcher of Coles Point, Louise Fletcher Tayloe of Charlottesville, James William Fletcher III of Sperryville and Stuart Fletcher Trope of Richmond; and 10 grandchildren.

A graveside service will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 14, at St. Paul's Episcopal Cemetery in Woodville.

Anna Ewell
Resident of The Plains

Anna Bell Taylor Ewell, 75, of The Plains died March 8, 1998, at Culpeper Health Care Center.

Mrs. Ewell is survived by four daughters: Frances Frye of Manassas Park, Mary Ewell of Washington, D.C., Dorothy Ewell of Leesburg and Anna Bell Ewell of Roanoke; two sons, Lindsey Ewell of Leesburg and Beverly Ewell of Pontiac, Mich.; two brothers, Daniel Taylor of The Plains, and Charles Taylor of Warrenton; a sister, Edna Utterback of The Plains; 16 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Samuel Smith will lead a memorial service at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 12, at Joynes Funeral Home in Warrenton. Visitation will take place one hour before the service. Interment will be private.

Betty Horton
Church member

Betty Kirby Horton, 67, of Warrenton died March 4, 1998, at Fauquier Hospital.

Mrs. Horton was born Aug. 25, 1930 in Metumona, Mich., a daughter of the late Charles and Dora O'Bannon Kirby. She was an active member of Bethel United Methodist Church and the auxiliary of American Legion Post 72 in Warrenton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Amis T. Horton, and a daughter, Jacquelyn M. Horton.

She is survived by three sons: Charles T. Horton of Lawrenceville, James A. Horton of Marshall and Michael A. Horton of Warrenton; two sisters, Dorothy K. Soaper of Port Richey, Fla., and Haldeen K. Wilson of Warrenton.

The Rev. Jack Julcher led a funeral service March 9 at Bethel United Methodist Church and a graveside service March 10 at Arlington National Cemetery.
