Matilda Whitmore
White Post resident

Matilda Madeline Wedlock Whitmore, 90, of White Post died March 6, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. Whitmore was born in Warren County on Oct. 27, 1907, the daughter of the late David and Fannie Jackson Wedlock. She was a member of the Ebenezer Baptist Church and the Helping Hand Club at Ebenezer. She worked in a domestic service. She was preceded in death by her husband, George R. Whitmore, and a daughter, Lucille Payton, as well as two sisters and two brothers.

She is survived by two sons, George Whitmore Jr. of Front Royal, and Charles Whitmore of White Post; three daughters: Ethel Lester of Washington, D.C., Virginia Payne of Purcellville, and Elizabeth Washington of Berryville; a brother, Houston Wedlock Sr. of Berryville; 18 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

The Rev. John B. Hale led a funeral service March 10 at Ebenezer Baptist Church in White Post. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Agnes Nixdorff
Former Fauquier resident

Agnes Conway Childs Nixdorff, 82, of Largo, Fla., died March 4, 1998.

Mrs. Nixdorff was born Jan. 2, 1916 in Fauquier County, the daughter of the late E.L. and Anna Strother Childs.

She is survived by her husband, retired Lt. Col. James B. Nixdorff of Largo, Fla.; three sons: James B. Nixdorff Jr. of Warrenton, Charles L. Nixdorff of Destrehan, La., and Michael M. Nixdorff of Kenner, La.; a brother, Ernest Lee Childs Jr. of Casanova; and two grandchildren.

The Rev. James Chipps led a funeral service March 9 at Moser Funeral Home Chapel. Interment was in Warrenton Cemetery.

Rosalie Palmer
Church member

Rosalie Rixey Palmer, 94, of Culpeper, died March 9, 1998, at Blue Ridge Christian Home in Bealeton.

Mrs. Palmer was born in Culpeper on May 8, 1903, the daughter of William Herndon and Inez Williams Rixey. She was a member of Little Fork Episcopal Church, United Daughters of the Confederacy and the National Society of Colonial Dames of America. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. William G. Palmer, in 1983, and a sister, Celeste R. Scott.

She is survived by two daughters, Catherine P. Chilton of Jeffersonton, and Inez P. Simmons of Plant City, Fla.; her brother, William H. Rixey of Aroda; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

The Rev. John DeSaulniers will lead a memorial service at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 15, at Little Fork Church in Rixeyville. Interment will be in the Masonic Cemetery in Culpeper.

Otis Fling
Government worker

Otis Russell Fling, 75, of Warrenton died March 10, 1998, at Fauquier Hospital.

Mr. Fling was born Aug. 22, 1922, in Leesburg. He retired in 1972 from the Department of the Army, U.S. Government, as a production specialist.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Pauline Slack McKinley.

He is survived by his wife, Mont O. Fling; three children: Gloria F. Tuck of Crofton, Md., Michael P. Fling of Warrenton, and Belinda R. McCleary of Strasburg; and three grandsons.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 12, at Moser Funeral Home in Warrenton. The Rev. Sam P. Jones will lead a funeral service at 11 a.m. Friday, March 13, at Moser Chapel. Interment will be in Marshall Cemetery.

Katy Jones
Teacher

Katy Murphy Jones, former resident of Mount Pleasant, S.C., died March 10, 1998, at her home in Haymarket.

Mrs. Jones was born in Decatur, Ala., and attended high school in Birmingham, Ala. She graduated from Emory and Henry College in Abington in 1973. After teaching school in West Virginia and Nashville, Tenn., she moved to Fairfax, where she continued to teach elementary school.

She was the wife of the Rev. David Nickerson Jones, rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Haymarket. They were married at St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church in Nashville, Tenn., in 1980.

Mrs. Jones served as a Christian aerobics instructor and was active in ministry at Truro Episcopal Church in Fairfax. In 1990, she and her family moved to Mount Pleasant, S.C., where she served as a lay leader in the Women's and Children's Ministry at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church.

She is survived by her husband, the Rev. David Nickerson Jones; her children: Kenneth E. Murphy of Texas, Kimberly Anne, Elizabeth Nickerson and David Peter Jones of Haymarket; her parents, the Rev. Chuck and Anne Murphy of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; her sister, Donna Dardani of Easton, Conn.; her brothers, the Rev. Chuck Murphy III of Pawley's Island, S.C., the Rev. Tim Murphy of Florence, Ala., and Chris Murphy of Montgomery, Ala.

The Rt. Rev. David Colin Jones, Suffragan Bishop of the Diocese of Virginia, and the Rt. Rev. Peter James Lee, Bishop of the Diocese of Virginia, will lead a funeral service at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 12, at Truro Episcopal Church in Fairfax. A memorial service will take place at a later date at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Mount Pleasant, S.C.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's Church Children's Ministry Fund, P.O. Box 195, Haymarket, Va. 20168, or Hospice of Northern Virginia.

James A. Bowler
Catlett dairy farmer
James Albert Bowler, 88, of Catlett, died Feb. 24, 1998, at Fauquier Hospital.

He was born Oct. 21, 1909, in Gordonsville, a son of the late James and Ella Bowler.

Mr. Bowler worked in Washington, D.C., for many years and owned a number of properties and a chain of taxi cabs. In the mid-1940s, he realized a long-held dream, when he and his wife purchased a 300-acre dairy farm near Catlett. He also later founded a waste-hauling business. In 1974, Mr. and Mrs. Bowler sold most of their farm.

Mr. Bowler was a long-time member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Warrenton, where he served as chairman of the trustee board and the deacon board. He was instrumental in helping the church acquire adjacent property for expansion and was a member of the 100 Dollar Club.

He was married for 53 years to Emma Mae Allen, who died in March 1995.

Survivors include: a daughter, Hazeltine Johnson of Baltimore; two brothers, Ernest Bowler and Archie Bowler; a sister, Alice Stewart; two granddaughters, and five great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Moyer Foddrell led a funeral service Feb. 28 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Interment at Lincoln Memorial Cemetery in Suitland, Md., will be private.

Archie M. Smith
Army Air Corps veteran

Archie Marian Smith, 83, of Warrenton, died Feb. 27, 1998, at Richmond Community Hospital.

Mr. Smith was born Feb. 7, 1915. He was a barber and a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army Air Corps.

Survivors include: his wife, Clara N. Smith of Alexandria; a brother, Arthur Smith of Camp Springs, Md., and two sisters, Roberta Williams of Washington, D.C., and Listina Dozier of Randloph, Md.

The Rev. Herman Gill will lead a memorial service at noon Thursday, March 5, at Joynes Funeral Home in Warrenton. Interment will be in Culpeper National Cemetery.

Irene Sisson
Former Marshall resident

Irene Jeanett Sisson, 73, of Warrenton, formerly of Marshall, died March 1, 1998, at Fauquier Hospital.

Mrs. Sisson was born in Floyd County on Feb. 3, 1925, a daughter of the late David C. and Bessie M. Graham Jones. She was preceded in death by her husband John Sisson, and a son, Harold Sisson.

She is survived by two daughters, Patricia A. Singleton of Ashland, Ky., and Brenda L. Eggelston of Remington; a brother, Kenneth J. Jones of Christiansburg; and two grandchildren.

The Rev. Randy Daniels led a graveside service March 4 at Marshall Cemetery.

Eva Isaacson
World War II nurse

Eva B. Isaacson, 85, of Marshall died Feb. 26, 1998, at Marshall Manor.

Mrs. Isaacson was born in Georgia on May 13, 1912, the daughter of the late James Lipscomb Hunter and Eva Todd Scheetz Hunter. She was a nurse with the Public Health Service during World War II. She also worked at Fauquier Hospital. She was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Catlett. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman Isaacson.

She is survived by a stepson, Alan Howard of New York, N.Y., and a step-grandchild.

The Rev. Roma Maycock led a graveside service March 3 at Culpeper National Cemetery.
