Margaret Gordon
Bookkeeper

Margaret Wiser Gordon, 77, of Warrenton died Sept. 3, 1998, at Fauquier Hospital.

Mrs. Gordon was born in Virginia on March 24, 1921, the daughter of the late Clarence Ennis Wiser and Elizabeth Wiser. She was a bookkeeper and a member of the Warrenton United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Mansfield Gordon.

She is survived by three sisters: Bessie Lunsford of Buckland, Nancy W. Lee of Front Royal, and Mae Nelson of Warrenton; and two brothers, George T. and Raymond G. Wiser, both of Broad Run.

The Rev. Jeff Roberts led a graveside memorial service Sept. 6 at Middleburg Memorial Cemetery.

Susie Spicer
Amissville resident

Susie Virginia Spicer, 72, of Amissville died Sept. 1, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. Spicer was born in Virginia on April 16, 1926, the daughter of the late James Jefferies and Rosie Lee Jefferies. She was a member of the Amissville United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Edward Spicer.

She is survived by three daughters: Margret Smith of Baton Rouge, La., Pearl Counts and Christine Ryan both of Rixeyville; two sons, Walter F. Spicer Jr. and James R. Spicer, both of Amissville; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Herbert Leach led a funeral service Sept. 4, at Moser Funeral Home. Interment was in Hillcrest Memory Gardens.

Memorial donations may be made toward expenses, c/o Moser Funeral Home, P.O. Box 186, Warrenton, Va. 20188.

Thomas Piercy III
Retired telephone worker

Thomas Marriott Piercy II, 77, of Marshall, formerly of Gainesville, died Aug. 26, 1998, at home.

Mr. Piercy was born in Haymarket on May 6, 1921, the son of Thomas Marriott and Estelle (nee cave) Piercy Jr. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1942 to 1945 during World War II in Europe. He retired from the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company after more than 35 years of service.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Poland Piercy; three daughters: Karen Sheedy of Haymarket, Jackie Norman of Hamilton and Kim Housden of Bridgeport, W.Va.; a brother, William Piercy of Shepherdstown, W.Va.; and three grandchildren.

The Rev. David Jones led a funeral service Aug. 31 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Haymarket. Interment was in the church cemetery.

William Hume
Aeronautical engineer

William Haywood Hume, 78, of Hume, died of pancreatic cancer on July 30, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Hume was born in Washington, D.C., on Nov. 16, 1919, the son of Col. Howard Hume and Doris Haywood Hume. He spent his childhood on Army posts around the country and in the Pacific. He graduated from Tome School in Port Deposit, Md., and attended the University of Maryland before being appointed to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

Mr. Hume graduated from West Point in 1943 and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He became a pursuit pilot after graduation from single engine advanced flying school at Spence Field, Ga. He joined the 410th Fighter Squadron, 373rd Fighter Group in Norfolk. Stationed in England, he flew P-47 fighter bombers with the Ninth Air Force in Europe during World War II and provided air cover during the Normandy invasion on D-Day.

After the war Mr. Hume was assigned to Air Force Research and Development at Wright Field in Dayton, Ohio, where he did graduate work at the Air Force Institute of Technology. He was Air Force liaison officer for research and development with Bu-Air, Navy Department from 1948 to 1952.

He served in the Korean War, where he flew F-80 fighter bombers and served as Air Force liaison officer with the 40th Infantry. After the war, he was assigned to Air Force Special Weapons Center at Kirkland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, N.M., and the Air Force Systems Command at Andrews Air Force Base in Suitland, Md.

In 1958 he left the Air Force to become an aerospace engineer, specializing in missile development for the Boeing Co. in Seattle. In 1962 he represented Boeing's Bomark program in Washington, D.C.

Mr. Hume was active in civic affairs in Federal Way, Wash., and was the Republican nominee for the state legislature for the 30th District in 1962. In 1966, Mr. Hume returned to Washington, D.C., as a computer systems analyst in the Defense Communications Agency, supporting the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He retired from the federal civil service in 1979 and built a retirement home in Hume.

He was an active member of the Thunderbolt Pilots' Association, the Ninth Air Force Association, the Army and Navy Club, the Sons of the American Revolution, the Society of Colonial Wars, the Society of the War of 1812 in Virginia and the Order of the Crown of Charlemagne in the United States of America.

He was also a long-time member of the Thorton F. McElroy Lodge No. 302, A.F. & A.M., Federal Way, Wash., and the Scottish Rite, Tacoma, Wash., and the Shriners Afifi Temple, A.A.O.N.M.S. of Tacoma, Wash. He was a life-long bridge player and a Life Master of the American Contract Bridge League. In Hume, he served on the vestry of Leeds Episcopal Church and was a past president of the Leeds Ruritan Club, which recently honored him for his service and 23 years of perfect attendance.

Mr. Hume is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jean McCarty Hume; his four children: Ann Hume Loikow of Washington, D.C., William Haywood Hume Jr. of Herndon, Susan Hume McIntosh and Robert Howard Hume, both of Falls Church, and five grandchildren.

A graveside service took place Aug. 3 at the Hume family plot at Ivy Hill Cemetery in Alexandria. A memorial service took place Aug. 5 at Leeds Episcopal Church in Hume.

Ellenor Shillito
Hospital volunteer

Ellenor Bertram Shillito, 80, of Jeffersonton died Aug. 4, 1998, at Sunrise of Warrenton.

Mrs. Shillito was born in New York City on Aug. 25, 1917, the daughter of the late William H. Bertram and Marie Bertram. An active volunteer for many organizations, she volunteered for 40 years at Huntington Hospital on Long Island, N.Y., and received the only Outstanding Service Award ever given there. She also was a Master Duplicate Bridge player and a member of the Catholic Daughters of America.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Alfred Shillito. She is survived by two daughters, Jonelle Lawrence of Philadelphia and Tracy Mullen of Jeffersonton; and five grandchildren.

A Memorial Mass will be given at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 11, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Warrenton.

Mertha Perkins
Warrenton resident

Mertha Dean Perkins, 85, of Warrenton died July 29, 1998, at Warrenton Overlook Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Mrs. Perkins was born in Criglersville on May 7, 1913, the daughter of the late Haywood Carpenter and Eunice Twyman. She was the widow of Mayo Perkins and a member of Jehovah's Witnesses.

She is survived by two daughters, Adelaide Menefee of Culpeper and Ruth Robinson of Warrenton; 13 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.

A funeral service took place Aug. 1 at Clore-Geest Funeral Home Chapel in Culpeper. Interment was in Mount Zion Church Cemetery.

Pamela Hovey
Photographer

Pamela Rand Hovey, 46, of Leesburg died Aug. 1, 1998, at Loudoun Hospital Center.

Mrs. Hovey was a photographer for Middleburg Life and worked as a freelancer. She received a volunteer award for dedication and service to the Virginia Gold Cup Association. She was a member of the Middleburg Players and had worked as production manager for The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas and Chorus Line.

She is survived by her husband, Richard Hovey, and son, Christopher W. Hovey, of Leesburg.

A memorial service took place Aug. 4 at Royston Funeral Home in Middleburg.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Hill School, Middleburg.

Theodore Baltimore Sr.
Linden carpenter

Theodore Roosevelt "Jack" Baltimore Sr., 80, of Linden, died July 25, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Baltimore was a carpenter.

He is survived by his wife, Loretta Baltimore; a daughter, Bertha Baltimore of Albany, Ga.; a son, Theodore R. "Jack " Baltimore Jr. of Linden, and two grandchildren.

The Rev. Allen Baltimore will lead a funeral service at noon Thursday, July 30, at Royston Funeral Home in Marshall. Interment will be in the Baltimore family cemetery in Linden.

David Sowers
Painting contractor

David Franklin Sowers, 48, of Bealeton died July 23, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Sowers was born in Culpeper County on Sept. 21, 1949. He was a painting contractor.

He is survived by his mother, Louise S. Hudson of Warrenton; two sons, Kevin Sowers of Dale City and Steve Melvin of Manassas; three sisters: Mildred Freeman of Virginia Beach, Joyce Vance of Brandy Station and Penny Durniak of Nokesville; four brothers: Robert Sowers of Manassas, Billy Sowers of Front Royal, Gary Hudson of Madison and Mark Goldenthal of Ijamsville, Md.

A funeral service took place July 27 at Royston Funeral Home in Marshall. Interment was in Sharon Cemetery in Middleburg.
