Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Turner T. Smith Sr.

Turner Taliaferro Smith Sr., died Wednesday, Oct. 17, at his home, Greenwood Farm, near Haymarket.

He was the father of five, a respected member of the legal community, a "gentleman farmer," and an avid golfer.

Born in Washington, D.C., he was raised in the Washington area. He received a bachelor’s degree in commerce from the University of Virginia in 1934, and earned an LLB from George Washington University in 1936. In 1936 he began practicing law and became associated with the Hogan and Hartson law firm in 1941. From 1943 to 1946 he served as an officer in the United States Navy as a member of the Office of Strategic Services.

At the end of World War II, Smith returned to Hogan and Hartson, but soon returned to the government in Foreign Service, serving in Istanbul, Turkey and Mexico City, Mexico.

In 1960, Smith returned practice law in Manassas. He represented the town of Haymarket from 1960 until 1995. He was the town attorney for the growing town of Manassas for 27 years, from 1961 to 1988. In 1973, Smith co-founded the law firm of Smith and Davenport and continued his work in municipal law, serving at various times as the attorney also for several other local municipalities, including Quantico, Dumfries and Manassas Park. for over fifty years he was a member of the Virginia Bar Association and was a member of the Executive Committee of the Virginia State Bar from 1981 until 1984. Turner Smith was a member of the Barristers, a member of the Virginia Election Laws Commission, and served as President of the Virginia Law Foundation. He was awarded the first Arthur Sinclair Professionalism Award in 1992 by the Prince William County Bar Association.

He served on the Board of Directors for Stuart Hall, a residential school for girls in Staunton, and assisted in the establishment of WETA as a board member and an advisor during its formative years. He was a long-time member of the Chevy Chase Country Club and the Washington Golf and Country Club. More recently, he and others founded the Evergreen Country Club, in Haymarket.

Turner Smith married Lois Fisk of Texas in 1938 and shared his life with her and their five children until her death in 1989. He was married to Mary Harrover Ayes Ferguson from 1991 until her death in 2000.

Turner T. Smith is survived by his son, Turner Taliaferro Smith Jr. of Middleburg; his daughters, Glenore Fisk Smith of Manassas, Jaquelin Smith Gotlieb of Stone Mountain, Ga., Josephine Pendleton Smith Strickler of Richmond and Emily Taliaferro Smith Rappold of Fairfax; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church , 6760 Fayette St., Haymarket, with the Rev. David N. Jones officiating.

Lillian E. Lucas

Lillian Edith Lucas, 85, of Manassas died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001, at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church.

Born in Prince William County, she was a member of Westover Baptist Church, Manassas. She was a member and Sunday school teacher at various churches over the years.

Preceded in death by her parents, John Thomas and Sadie Heflin Norman; two sisters, Osie Wheaton and Anna P. Routt; and one brother, Luther A. Norman; she is survived by her husband of 70 years, Charles Edward Lucas; one daughter,

Shirley E. Webb of Manassas; three sisters, Beatrice Herrick of Gettysburg, Pa., Dorothy M. Keys and Jane Scott, both of Manassas; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Price Funeral Home, 9609 Center St., Manassas. Funeral services will be held at noon Monday at Westover Baptist Church, 10301 Sudley Manor Drive, Manassas, with the Rev. Randall Haynes officiating.

Interment to follow at Stonewall Memory Gardens, Manassas.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of flowers or contributions to the Westover Baptist Church Building Fund, 10301 Sudley Manor Drive, Manassas, VA 20109, in memory of Lillian Edith Lucas.

Woodrow Hicks

Woodrow Hicks, 67, of Manassas died October 19, 2001, at Prince William Hospital, Manassas.

He is survived by his wife Lillian; one daughter, Mary Elizabeth Rose of Stephens City; one son, John Brabern Hicks of Manassas; two brothers Harry Hicks of Manassas and Bill Hicks of Warrenton; two sisters, Fannie Nicholson of Manassas and Stella Korzendorfer of Manassas; and two grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Blasius-Baker Funeral Home, 9320 West St., Manassas. Funeral Services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. Interment will be at Stonewall Memory Gardens.

Neta B. Young

Neta Brumback Young, 96, of Stafford died October 18, 2001, at Heritage Hall Health Care. Preceded in death by her parents, Henry Walton and Anne Huffman Brumback, and husband, Larrie Young, she is survived by one daughter; Lois J. Young of Stafford; one son, Warren L. Young of Stafford; two sisters, Eva B. Cato of Dumfries and Edith B. Payne of Strasburg; two grandsons and one great-grandson.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Mullins & Thompson Stafford Chapel, where funeral services will be held Monday at 10 a.m.with the Rev. E. Wayne Greene officiating. Interment will be at National Memorial Park, Falls Church.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of choice.

Michael W. Butler

Michael Wayne Butler, 50, of Lakeland, Fla., formerly of the Fredericksburg area, died Monday, October 25, 2001, at Lakeland Regional Hospital, Lakeland.

He was a carpenter and a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps.

He is survived by his son, William J. Butler; father and stepmother; Joseph P. and Jacqueline Butler of Fredericksburg; and one half-brother; Joseph Butler Jr. of Staten Island, N.Y.

Graveside services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Gardens, U.S. 1, Spotsylvania County with the Rev. John DeJong officiating.

Arrangements are by Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service.

Lana J. Nickell

Lana Jean Nickell, of Paducah, Ky., died Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-East in Memphis, Tenn.

She was born in Charleston, W.Va., and grew up in Nokesville. She was a graduate of Brentsville District High School and received a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Morris Harvey College in Charleston and a master’s degree in academic counseling from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. She had served as a teacher and assistant principal at Lynchburg Christian Academy, Lynchburg and had taught in several public school systems in Virginia and North Carolina. After moving to Paducah, she taught at Cornerstone Christian Academy and served as a private tutor. Among her many professional honors, Nickell had previously been recognized as Virginia’s Teacher of the Year. She was a member of the Paducah Lions Club, Heartland Worship Center and the Alpha Omega Pi sorority.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Pete and Ruth Keeny of Manassas and Doyle King of Charleston; and one brother, James King.

She is survived by her husband of 11 years, Paducah attorney, Shea Nickell; two brothers, Dr. Terry King of Millboro and John Keeney of Manassas; and several nieces and nephews. The family received friends Friday at Heartland Worship Center.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m.today at Heartland Worship Center, 4777 Alben Barkley Drive, Paducah. Officiating will be Dr. Jerry Falwell of Thomas Road Baptist Church in Lynchburg, where she was a former member. The Rev. Don Young, the Rev. Johnny Sams, the Rev. Jonathan Falwell, the Rev. Gregory Waldorp and the Rev. Joe Geary will assist with the service. Burial will be in Maplelawn Park Cemetery.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Lana Jean King Nickell Scholarship Fund at Lynchburg Christian Academy. Scholarship funds may be sent to the Community Foundation of West Kentucky at P.O.Box 7901, Paducah, KY, 42002-7901.

Jerome T. Henry

Jerome "J.T." T. Henry, of Colonial Beach, formerly of Burke, died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2001.

He was born in Alexandria. He was vice president of Government and Commercial Supply Inc. of Manassas, a U.S. Army ranger in Vietnam, a member of Colonial Beach Moose Lodge and a 1963 graduate of Old Groveton High School in Alexandria.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon I. Henry; two daughters, Michelle Clausser of Manassas and Colleen LeClair of Alexandria; one son, Robert Henry of Alexandria; one niece, Angela Hillegas of Alderson, W.Va.; one sister, Mary Ellen Boswell of Colonial Beach; a half-sister, Peggy Cubberly, of Alexandria; and many others.

A celebration of his life will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at The Landing in Colonial Beach, and from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at 9801 Flint Rock Road., Manassas.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society (Manassas Relay for Life), 124 Park St. SE, Vienna, VA 22180; or the Humane Society of the United States, 2100 L. St. NW, Washington, DC 20037; or to the charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are by Nash and Slaw Funeral Home of Colonial Beach.

Devin T. Jackson

Devin Tyler Jackson, 2-month-old son of Brandi Church and Rudolph Jackson, both of Manassas, died Friday, Nov. 23, 2001, at Prince William Hospital, Manassas.

Survivors also include one sister, Deija Watson of Manassas; grandparents, Vance and Janet Church of Morristown, Tenn., Rudolph Jackson Sr. of Manassas and Beatrice Jackson of Waldorf, Md.; and many other relatives and friends.

The family will receive friends at 11 a.m. Thursday at Ames Funeral Home, 8914 Quarry Road, Manassas, where funeral services will follow at noon, the Rev. Willis Hogan officiating.

Interment will be at Stonewall Memory Gardens, Manassas.

Paul E. Burke

Paul E. Burke, 67, died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, at Prince William Hospital, Manassas.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Albert I. and Tessie B. Robinson Burke; his wife, Betty Ann Burke; and one son, Paul Burke Jr.

He is survived by one daughter, Sharon Devers of Linden; one son, William Burke of Manassas; and four grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Blasius-Baker Funeral Home, 9320 West St., Manassas. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Baker Chapel. Interment will follow at Bradley Forest Cemetery.

Albert Chapman

Albert H. "Rock" Chapman, 69, of Woodbridge, died Tuesday, March 19, 2002, at Potomac Hospital.

He had been a resident of Woodbridge since 1967. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. He retired from Virginia Power in 1990 after 35 years service. He was a member of the Riverview Baptist Church, VFW of Dale City and the Crow's Nest Hunt Club in Harrisonburg.

Survivors are his wife of 46 years, Ruby P. Chapman of Woodbridge; three sons, Allen D. Chapman of Callao, John B. Chapman and William T. Chapman, both of Stafford and eight grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Thursday, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Mountcastle Funeral Home, 13318 Occoquan Road, Woodbridge, where services will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Quantico National Cemetery with military honors.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the National Parkinson's Foundation, 1501 N.W. 9th Ave., Miami, FL 33136.

Tanis Hase

Tanis Ann Larsen Hase, 66, died Tuesday, March 18, 2002, in Colorado Springs, Colo.

She is survived by two sons, Christan A. Hase and Ethan L. Hase; seven daughters, Cynthia L. Lehman, Allison A. Young, Laurel A. Mullins, Daris D. Lancaster, Sara C. Doss, Miriam E. Hase Miller, Vivian R. Giles and 30 grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at Mountcastle Funeral Home, 13318 Occoquan Road, Woodbridge, from 7 to 9 p.m. today.

Services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Dale City. Interment will follow at Quantico National Cemetery at noon, where she will be buried icon beside her husband, Floyd Grover Hase.

Bertha L. O'Donnell

Bertha Lee O'Donnell, 79, of Warrenton died Monday, March 18, 2002, at the Prince William Hospital.

She was born March 29, 1922, in Pikeville, Ky., daughter of the late Alex and Matilda Smith Boyd. She attended Old Dominion Baptist Church in Nokesville.

Survivors include five children, John Michael O'Donnell of York, Charles Patrick O'Donnell of Howell, N.J., James Dennis O'Donnell of Fredericksburg, Mary Colleen O'Donnell of Alton, Mo., and Frances B. Auld of St. Petersburg, Fla.; two sisters, Marie B. Cooley of Merrit Island, Fla., and Pearl B. English of Manassas; four brothers, Jerome Boyd of Detroit, Turner Boyd of Tennessee, Bob Boyd of Texas, and Roger Boyd of Pikeville, Ken.; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Price Funeral Home, 9609 Center St., Manassas, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday with the Rev. Robert Perdue officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Fredericksburg.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of flowers or memorials to Old Dominion Baptist Church, 10405 Shaeffer Lane, Nokesville, VA 20181.

Arlette L. Beach

Arlette L. "Nook" Beach, 57, of Stafford died Saturday, March 16, 2002, at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg.

Survivors include one daughter, Debbie Garland of Woodbridge; two sons, Anthony and Randy Delozier, both of Woodbridge; two sisters, Shelby Lara of Stafford and Rosie Lee of Lorton; two brothers, Michael Gorham of Stafford and Cecil Beach of Chantilly; and four grandchildren.

Friends may call from 11:30 to 12:30 p.m. Friday at Mountcastle Funeral Home, 13318 Occoquan Road, Woodbridge, where services will be held at 12:30 p.m.

Frederick C. Faass

Frederick Carl Faass, 71, of Fairfax died Tuesday, March 19, 2002, at Inova Fair Oaks Hospital in Fairfax.

He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Fairfax and had retired from Fairfax County Public Schools as an audio-video technician after 19 years of service.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Helga M. Faass; three sons, Michael Carl Faass of Arizona, Timothy F. Faass of Manassas and Donnie Joe Faass of Fairfax; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Christ Lutheran Church, 3810 Meredith Drive, Fairfax, where a memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. with Pastor Ivan G. Ives officiating. Inurnment will be private.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of flowers or memorials to Christ Lutheran Church, 3810 Meredith Drive, Fairfax, VA 22030.

Arrangements are by Price Funeral Home, Manassas.

Lovel V. Carver

Lovel Veoler Carver, 75, of Colonial Beach died Tuesday, March 19, 2002, at Beverly Health Care in Fredericksburg.

He was born Oct. 25, 1926, in Washington, D.C. He retired from Potomac Electric Power Company in Washington and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars in Maryland, the American Legion in Clinton, Md., and the Moose Lodge in Colonial Beach. He was a U.S. Navy veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Carol Carver; one daughter, Cathryn Delgado of Gainesville; one brother, Fred M. Carver of Colonial Beach; one step-sister, Barbara Shields of Mitchellville, Md.; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at National Memorial Park at a later date.

Memorials may be made to favorite charity.
