BETTY B. PUCKETT
Betty Jo Beasley Holt Puckett, 65, of Mount Airy, N.C., died Wednesday, June 4, 2003, at Northern Hospital of Surry County.
She was born April 18, 1938 in Surry County, N.C., and was a daughter of the late Silas and Jessie Goins Beasley. She was preceded in death by her first husband, David William Holt; a sister, Evelyn Yarborough; and a brother, George Larry Beasley.
She was a homemaker and was a member of Little Valley Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Wade Puckett of the home; two daughters, Mary Hill of Galax and Linda Nelson of Cana; two sons, David Nelson of Pilot Mountain, N.C., and James Nelson of Pinnacle, N.C.; three stepdaughters, Lynn Casstevens of Mount Airy, N.C., Rita Horton of Ararat and Vickie Tate of Mount Airy; one stepson, Dennis "Bud" Puckett of Dobson, N.C.; seven sisters, Laura Catlin of Pfafftown, N.C., Teresa Corett of Rural Hall, N.C., Lottie Crocker of Mount Airy, Judy Marion of Cana, Janice Nelson of Stanleyville, N.C., Glenda Hall of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Becky Beasley of Pilot Mountain, N.C.; three brothers, Otis Beasley of Pinnacle, Donald Beasley of Tobaccoville, N.C., and Mike Beasley of Stanleyville; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; 13 stepgrandchildren and eight stepgreat-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday at Moody Funeral Home chapel in Mount Airy. The Rev. Johnnie Hawks and Harlow Goins officiated. Burial was in Skyline Memory Gardens.

ALEX LEE SPENCER
The Rev. Alex Lee Spencer, 77, of Richmond, died May 31, 2003.
He was born in Patrick County on February 1, 1926, to the late Joseph Green and Ella Nora Spencer.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War, was a member of the Virginia National Guard, and chaplain for the Virginia Defense Force.
A graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University, he attended Wesleyan Theological Seminary, Washington, D.C. He was a supply minister on the Ashland and Petersburg District Circuits for the United Methodist Church before organizing Reams Independent Methodist Church in Dinwiddie County, where he was minister for many years until retirement.
Spencer held several administrative positions at Medical College of Virginia and was a counselor with the Virginia Department of Corrections.
Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Dorothy Heider Spencer; three daughters, Carol DeBusk of Salem, Linda Rothrock of Mechanicsville and Gail Seredni of Glen Allen; one brother, William J. Spencer of Arlington; five grandchildren; three stepgrandsons and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted June 3 at Providence United Methodist Church, Richmond, with military rites by the Honor Guard from Fort Lee. Burial was in Dale Memorial Park, Chesterfield.

NINA H. STANLEY
Nina Mae Harrell Stanley, 90, of Meadows of Dan, died Wednesday, June 4, 2003, at R.J. Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital in Stuart.
She was born in Patrick County on May 2, 1913 to the late Charlie and Laura Barnard Harrell. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Erby Stanley; two sons, Eugene Stanley and Howard Stanley; one grandchild, Darlene Stanley; a sister, Annice Bolt; and four brothers, Jimmy Harrell, Fred Harrell, Every Harrell and Gordon Harrell.
She was retired from J.P. Stevens, Inc., and was a member of Green Mountain Baptist Church.
Surviving are one daughter, Opal Conner of Meadows of Dan; one son, Ray Stanley of Westfield, N.C.; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday at Green Mountain Baptist Church. The Rev. Nathan Montgomery officiated. Burial was in the Hylton family cemetery.
Pallbearers were Joe Turman, Paul Turman, Allan Boyd, Matt Cesaro, Jolly Webb and Linford Willord.
Arrangements were by Moody Funeral Home in Stuart.

LAWRENCE E. ADKINS
Lawrence "Sam" Eggleston Adkins, 70, of Collinsville, died Sunday, September 28, 2003, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem, N.C.
He was born in Patrick County on December 28, 1932 and was a son of the late Thomas Everett Adkins and Sally Eggleston Adkins. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Wendall Adkins and Herbert Adkins.
He was owner and operator of Sam Adkins Home Builders for 50 years. He had been a member of Fort Trial Christian Church for 45 years and had served as a trustee and deacon.
Adkins was a member of the Henry County Board of Appeals.
Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Marie D. Adkins of the home; one daughter, Pam Fulton of Richmond; two sons, Stephen Adkins of Collinsville and Jeff Adkins of Martinsville; one sister, Ruth Price of Collinsville; three brothers, John Adkins of Collinsville, David Adkins of Fieldale and Bill Adkins of Collinsville; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Fort Trial Christian Church by Minister Marshall McCrickard. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park.
Memorial contributions may be made to The Piano Fund, Fort Trial Christian Church, 6356 Virginia Ave., Bassett, Va. 24055.
Arrangements are by Norris Funeral Services and Crematory.

MABEL W. AGNEW
Mabel Wilson Agnew, 80, of Martinsville and formerly of Bassett, died Friday, September 26, 2003, at her home.
She was born in Patrick County on February 7, 1923 and was a daughter of the late Robert Lee and Mary Martin Wilson. She was also preceded in death by her husband, David Morris Agnew, and a sister, Rebecca Lee Wilson.
She was employed by Standard Garments Co. for more than 14 years and was a former member of Valley Drive Baptist Church. More recently she was a member of Faith Baptist Church.
Surviving are one brother, James Andrew Wilson of Collinsville; one sister, Ruth W. Martin of Bassett; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
A graveside service was held Monday at Roselawn Burial Park.
Memorial contributions may be made to Faith Baptist Church, P.O. Box 371, Bassett, Va. 24055; or to Hospice of Memorial Hospital, P.O. Box 4788, Martinsville, Va. 24115-4788.
Pallbearers were Morton Haynes, Lincoln Wyatt, Randy Dennis and Roger Harris.
Arrangements were by Roselawn Chapel Funeral Home.

OSSIE V. ALBURY
Ossie Via Albury, 73, of Martinsville, died Thursday, September 25, 2003, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
She was born in Patrick County on March 22, 1930 and was a daughter of the late Dennis and Hattie Smith Via. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Orlando Albury, and a brother and sister.
She worked at the J.D. Bassett Furniture plant for 20 years and was a member of Mount Olive No. 1 Christian Church, where she served as treasurer of the Sunday school and was a member of the Christian Women's Fellowship.
Surviving are three daughters, Teresa R. Harkness of Martinsville, Beatrice D. Albury of Roanoke and Carolyn A. Hughes of Savannah, Ga.; two stepdaughters, Eleanor Butler and Barbara Albury, both of Nassau, Bahamas; three stepsons, Leslie Albury of Nassau, and Percy Albury and Patrick Albury, both of Freeport, Bahamas; two sisters, Velma Redd and Ada Wimbush, both of Martinsville; one brother, Henry Via of Martinsville; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Monday at Mount Olive East Christian Church by the Rev. Kenneth Davis and Minister Deborah Wimbush Perkins. Burial was in Carver Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were Corey Carter, Richard Penn, Dennis Via, Kenneth Via, Tyrone Via and Glenn Wimbish.
Arrangements were by Hairston Funeral Home.

CHRISTEEN T. BOWMAN
Christeen Turner Bowman, 67, of Bassett and formerly of Patrick County, died Tuesday, September 23, 2003 at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
She was born in Patrick County on March 18, 1935 to Fannie Hall Turner of Woolwine and the late Eugene Turner.
She was retired from Bassett-Walker Industries.
Surviving, in addition to her mother, are her husband, Franklin Donald Bowman of the home; three sisters, Cathleen Whitlow of Collinsville, Polly Boothe of Ferrum and Eunice Turner of Woolwine; four brothers, Hansel Turner and Roy Turner, both of Woolwine, Leonard Turner of Rocky Mount and Troy Turner of Woolwine; and several nieces and nephews.
A private graveside service will be held Friday at the Whitlow family cemetery with the Rev. Dewayne Troutt officiating.
Arrangements were by Moody Funeral Home in Stuart.

LEONARD J. CORNS
Elder Leonard Jackson Corns, 83, of Patrick Springs, died Sunday, September 28, 2003, at Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart.
He was born in Mayodan, N.C., on December 22, 1919 to the late Elijah L. and Elva Lawrence Corns. He was also preceded in death by a brother, E.L. Corns.
He was a pastor for over 50 years at Old Spoon Creek Primitive Baptist Church, Martinsville Primitive Baptist Church and Old Fellowship Primitive Baptist Church. He had a radio ministry on WHEO radio for 38 years and was a member of Martinsville Primitive Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Catherine Dillon Corns of the home; five daughters, Evelyn Rakes of Woolwine, Julia Tilley of Lottsburg, Ernestine Goad of Hillsville, Jerlene Tilley of Stuart and Pamela Goforth of Collinsville; one son, L.J. Corns Jr. of Archer, Fla.; two sisters, Doris Joyce of Burlington, N.C., and Jane Ferris of Danville; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday) at 2 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart. Elders Thomas Radford and David Hawks will officiate. Burial will be in the Old Spoon Creek Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.

VICTOR O. GUNTER
Victor Oscar Gunter, 89, of Mount Airy, N.C, died Tuesday, September 23, 2003, at Surry Community Nursing Center.
He was born June 2, 1914 in Patrick County and was a son of the late Will and Minnie Pruitt Gunter. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Eddie Lyons; a great-granddaughter, Brittany Atkins; three sisters and four brothers.
He was a retired tobacco farmer and was a member of Antioch Baptist Church.
Surviving are three daughters, Rebecca Atkins and Opal Draughn, both of Mount Airy, and Linda Coe of Dobson, N.C.; one son, Charles Oscar Gunter of Mount Airy; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Friday at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy by the Rev. Ricky Atkins. Burial was in Antioch Baptist Church cemetery.

WILLIAM L. HARNSBERGER SR.
William Lindsay "Bill" Harnsberger, 91, of Stuart, died Monday, September 29, 2003, at Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart.
He was born in Roanoke on November 11, 1911 and was a son of the late William R. and Mattie Lindsay Harnsberger.
He was the former operator of Mick or Mack in Stuart and Town and Country Supermarket in Patrick Springs.
Harnsberger was a member of Stuart United Methodist Church, where he served as treasurer for 30 years, and was a member of Stuart Lions Club and Knights of the Pythians of Martinsville.
Surviving are his wife, Ruth Smoot Harnsberger of the home; one daughter, Ruth Carroll Harnsberger of Stuart; one son, William L. Harnsberger Jr. of Patrick Springs; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A graveside service will be held today (Wednesday) at 3:30 p.m. at Stuart Cemetery. The Rev. Clyde DeLoach will officiate.
Arrangements are by Moody Funeral Home in Stuart.

MELGIN N. HOLT
Melgin Nowlin Holt, 81, of Bassett, died Monday, September 29, 2003, at her home.
She was born January 10, 1922 in Patrick County and was a daughter of the late Hugh and Jennie Sheppard Nowlin. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Bobbie Nowlin, and a brother, Travis Nowlin.
She retired from Bassett-Walker after 43 years in the sewing department and was a member of High Point Baptist Church for over 50 years.
Surviving are her husband, L. Akers Holt of the home; one niece; four nephews and a number of great-nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday) at 2 p.m. at McKee-Stone Funeral Services chapel with the Rev. Wayne Moore officiating. Entombment will be in Roselawn Abbey.

ADDIE V. HYLTON
Addie Elizabeth Via Hylton, 78, of Collinsville, died Tuesday, September 23, 2003, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
She was born February 8, 1925 in the Fairystone section of Patrick County and was a daughter of the late Solomon G. and Lucy Jane Bryant Via. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, E.G. Hylton Jr.; two brothers, Buren Via and Vernon Via; and three sisters, Ocie McAlexander, Elsie Janney and Myrtle Tilley.
She was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are one daughter, Vickie H. Hill of Trinity, N.C.; two sons, Jerry Hylton of Scottsburg and Gene Hylton of Mansfield, Oh.; two brothers, Coy Via and Lauren Via, both of Fieldale; one sister, Vera Joyce of Collinsville; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday at Roselawn Chapel Funeral Home. Pastor George Gorman officiated. Burial was in Roselawn Burial Park.
Pallbearers were Toney Janey, Bobby McAlexander, Curtis Tilley, Mike Joyce, Gary Joyce, Terry Hylton, Ryan Hylton and Shawn Hylton.

HUCIE M. LAWSON
Hucie Elizabeth Mabe Lawson, 87, of Ararat died Sunday, September 28, 2003.
She was born November 8, 1915 and was a daughter of the late Jim and Anna Mabe. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Clark Lawson; two grandchildren, Todd and Rene Lawson; a great-grandchild, Alliyah Rene Lawson; four sisters, Maybelle King, Gertrude Montgomery, Henrietta King and Eva Abbott; and one brother, Paul Mabe.
She was a charter member of Mount Ararat Pentecostal Holiness Church, where she was a member for 63 years.
Surviving are three sons, Stuart Lawson of Pembroke, N.C., Clark Lawson Jr. and Henry Lawson, both of Mount Airy, N.C.; six daughters, Joan Graham of Mount Airy, Gina Lawson and Patrice Lawson, both of Winston-Salem, N.C., Juanita Hill of Mount Airy, Mary Simmons of Kernersville, N.C., and Betty Lawson of the home; one sister, Pearlie Trapper of Mount Airy; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted today (Wednesday) at 11 a.m. at Moody Funeral Home chapel in Mount Airy by Pastor Ricky Rogers. Burial will be in the Doe Run Baptist Church cemetery in Ararat.
Memorial contributions may be made to Mount Ararat Pentecostal Holiness Church in Ararat.

ANNIE W. McBRIDE
Annie Bell Watson McBride, 69, formerly of Mount Airy, N.C., died Sunday, September 28, 2003, at Mayview Nursing Center in Raleigh, N.C.
She was born January 1, 1934 in Patrick County and was a daughter of the late Jesse and Vadie Lynch Watson. She was also preceded in death by an infant sister.
She was a member of First Baptist Church in Mount Airy, where she had formerly served as financial secretary.
Surviving are one daughter, Susan Renee of Sanford, N.C.; four sisters, Jean Lindsay of Charlotte, N.C., Wanda Deatherage of Stuart, Pauline Mitchell of Mount Airy, and Jeraldine Midkiff of Pilot Mountain, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday) at 1 p.m. at The First Baptist Church in Mount Airy. The Revs. Garland Hall and Buford Jessup and Dr. Roger Gilbert will officiate. Burial will be in the Unity Church cemetery.

MARGIE P. QUESENBERRY
Margie Pauline Quesenberry, 78, of Hillsville, died Wednesday, September 24, 2003, at Twin County Regional Hospital.
Surviving are four daughters, Betty Bond of Laurel Fork, Irene Spangler of Thaxton, Inez Young of Ararat and Scarlett Fender of Galax; one son, Thomas Quesinberry of Laurel Fork; two sisters, Anna Lee Goebig and Mary Nell Snyder, both of Philadelphia, Pa.; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady chapel in Hillsville. Burial was in the Hurst family cemetery in Laurel Fork.
