Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

JAMES R. HAZLEWOOD
James Ronald "Ronnie" Hazlewood, 67, of Stuart, died Thursday, January 22, 2004, at North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C.
He was born in Patrick County and was a son of the late John Preston "Hardy" Hazlewood and Grace Blackard Hazlewood. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Melba Moran, and two brothers, Charles Joseph Hazlewood and Alvin Hazlewood.
He worked for the W.C. Ham Center in Martinsville and attended Stepping Stones of Martinsville. He was a member of the Martinsville Bulldog Athletic Club and was a member of Big A Church of Christ.
Surviving are two sisters, Eldean Edwards of Martinsville and Betty Moore of Yadkinville, N.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday at Big A Church of Christ by Preacher Don Bailey. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Arrangements were by Moody Funeral Home of Stuart.

PAUL W. HOLT
Paul Winfred Holt, 74, of Mount Airy, N.C., died Sunday, January 18, 2004, at Northern Hospital of Surry County in Mount Airy, N.C.
He was born in Patrick County on July 14, 1929 to the late Joe and Polly Willard Holt. He was also preceded in death by four brothers, Clarence Holt, Dewey Holt, James Holt and Randolph Holt.
He was a retired farmer and was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are his wife, Cassie Atkins Wood Holt of the home; one stepdaughter, Patricia Lemons of Winston-Salem, N.C.; one stepson, Jeffrey Smith of Pinnacle, N.C.; two sisters, Audrey Bowman and Louise Holt, both of Pinnacle; four brothers, Junior Holt of Pinnacle, Bobby Holt of North Wilkesboro, N.C., Henry Holt of Mount Airy and Billy Holt of High Point; and three stepgrandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at Moody-Davis Funeral Home chapel in Dobson, N.C. The Revs. Ricky Colthran, Chris Davis, Tim Collins and Bobby Joe Shinault officiated. Burial was in the Pinnacle United Methodist Church cemetery.

C. RALPH HUBBARD
C. Ralph Hubbard, 89, of Fieldale, died Friday, January 23, 2004, at his home.
He was born in Patrick County on July 27, 1914 and was a son of the late Albert and Millie Hatcher Hubbard. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Iva Hill Hubbard; two sisters, Bertie Hubbard and Ruth Hill; and four brothers, George Hubbard, Murry Hubbard, Frank Hubbard and John Hubbard.
He was a charter member of the Sanville Ruritan Club. He was a member of Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church for over 60 years, where he served as chairman of the administration board and was a trustee, and also taught the men's Bible class.
Surviving are one daughter, Violet Plaster of Fieldale; two sons, Raybon H. Hubbard of Johnson City, Tenn. and Brewster R. Hubbard of Roanoke; three sisters, Dorothy Chilton of Mount Airy, N.C., May Lupton of Tucson, Ariz., and Pearl Tilton of Fresno, Calif.; four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church with Pastor George Gorman officiating. Burial will be in Patrick Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends for one hour before the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church, 63 Mt. Bethel Church Circle, Martinsville, Va. 24114.
Arrangements are by Moody Funeral Home in Stuart.

CLARENCE PLASTER
Clarence Woodrow Plaster, 90, of Collinsville, died Saturday, January 24, 2004, at his home.
He was born in Patrick County on March 22, 1913 and was a son of the late Elbert Pickett Plaster and Bettie Hopkins Plaster. He was the last surviving member of 11 siblings.
He retired from Virginia Mirror Company after 42 years of service and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He and his wife entertained many radio audiences with gospel music in the 1950s. He was of the Baptist faith and was a former choir director at Goodwill Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Dessa Turner Plaster of the home; two daughters, Betty Davis of Bassett and Rita Griffin of Oak Island, N.C.; three sons, Herb Plaster of Collinsville, Frank Plaster of Fieldale and Harold Plaster of Cascade; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at Moody Funeral Home chapel in Stuart. Pastor George E. Gorman officiated. Burial, with military rites by the Patrick County Veterans' Memorial Honor Guard, was in the Turner family cemetery in Stuart.

IONA E. SCOTT
Iona Estelle Mosley Scott, 76, of Cana, died Sunday, January 18, 2004, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.
She was born in Surry County, N.C., on February 9, 1927 to the late Jacob and Lena Sykes Mosely.
She was retired from Spencer's, Inc., and was a member of Stewarts Creek Primitive Baptist Church.
Surviving are one daughter, Phyllis Oehman of Germanton, N.C.; one son, Donise Ayers of Carrollton; three sisters, Audrey Marion of Stuart, Mabel Goad of Winston-Salem and Nerina Culler of Ararat; one brother, Jacob Mosely of Frederick, Md.; three grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at Stewarts Creek Primitive Baptist Church. Elders Walter Thomas, Raymond Sumner and Gary Lowe officiated. Burial was in the Mountain View Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery.
Arrangements were by Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, N.C.

A. KENDRA SHELOR
Anna Kendra Shelor, 14, of Laurel Fork, died Wednesday, January 21, 2004, at Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital.
Surviving are her parents, Jeffery and Rebecca Shelor of Laurel Fork; one brother, Jason Shelor of Meadows of Dan; one sister, Stephanie S. Bakely of Staunton; paternal grandparents, Dwight and Annalee Shelor of Meadows of Dan; her paternal great-grandfather, Hansel Banks of Stuart; and several aunts and uncles.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday at Meadows of Dan Baptist Church by the Revs. Nathan Montgomery and Al Griffin. Burial was in Maple Shade Cemetery.
Arrangements were by Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady in Hillsville.
MATTIE S. SMITH
Mattie Sawyers Smith, 82, of Doe Run Church Rd., Ararat, died Wednesday, January 21, 2004, at Northern Hospital of Surry County in Mount Airy, N.C.
She was born in Patrick County on August 19, 1921, and was a daughter of the late Joe Henry and Mary Agnes Hall Sawyers. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Everett Smith; a sister, Nellie Sawyers Bowman; and four brothers, Monroe Sawyers, Layton Sawyers, Canus Sawyers and Emmitt Sawyers.
She was a homemaker and was a member of Doe Run Baptist Church.
Surviving are one daughter, Patty Marshall of Ararat; one stepson, Junior Smith of Hillsville; one brother, Hoover Sawyers of Mount Airy; three grandchildren and three stepgrandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Friday at Doe Run Baptist Church. The Revs. Terry Vaughn and Homer Bowman officiated. Burial was in the Gladesboro Lutheran Church cemetery.
Arrangements were by Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy.

MINNIE M. EAGLE
Minnie Martin Eagle, 79, of Heidelbach School Rd, Stuart, died Monday, March 29, 2004, at her home.
She was born in Patrick County on October 25, 1924 to the late John and Isa Emerson Martin. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James Roy Eagle; a son, Ray James Brummett; a sister, Judith Frances Martin; four brothers, Noel Alexander Martin, Lemuel Gaston Martin, Claude Lewis Martin and John Franklin Martin; and three great-grandchildren, Jason Patrick Kennedy, Stephanie Ann Kennedy and Christopher Scott Samuel Kennedy.
She was a member of Orchard Drive Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher and choir member and was very active in the WMU. She was retired from Western State Hospital in Staunton.
Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Willie Knott of Mount Solon and Linda and Truman Lawless of Stuart; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Ann and Edd Easter of Stuart and Delia and Chris Marshall of Bassett; one sister-in-law, Irene Martin of Easton, Md.; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; and a granddaughter and special caregiver, Deborah England of Stuart.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday) at Orchard Drive Baptist Church in Bassett by Pastor Michael Harrison and Lester Reed, pastor of Lighthouse Church of the Brethren. Burial will be in the Augusta Memorial Park in Waynesboro.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Patrick County, 18688 Jeb Stuart Hwy., Stuart, Va. 24171; or to the Patrick County Developmental Center, P.O. Box 785, Stuart, Va. 24171.
Arrangements were by Moody Funeral Home in Stuart.

MABEL H. LAYMAN
Mabel Ore Hudspeth Layman, 84, of VFW Road, Patrick Springs, and recently of the Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart, died Monday, March 29, 2004, at R.J. Reynolds-Patrick County Memorial Hospital.
She was born in Patrick County and was a daughter of the late William L. and Lois Wigington Ore. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Vera Ayers and Barbara DeHart; three brothers, Murray Ore, Marshall Ore and Charlie Ore.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday) at Howell Funeral Home in Stuart. The Rev. J.R. Shelton will officiate. Burial will be in Patrick Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services.

ELLEN S. LIGHT
Ellen Frances Stephens Light, 65, of Mount Airy, N.C., died Wednesday, March 24, 2004, at her home.
She was born on April 17, 1938 in Patrick County and was a daughter of Lucy Willard Quesinberry of Westfield, N.C., and the late Eugene Stephens. She was also preceded in death by two grandchildren, Daniel Wayne Beck and Zachariah Samuel Terrell.
She was a homemaker and was a member of Trinity Baptist Church in Westfield.
Surviving, in addition to her mother, are one daughter, Donna Shelton of Mount Airy; three sons, Jack Beck, Walter "Dinky" Terrell and Harvey Terry, all of Mount Airy; one brother, Jerry Wayne Stephens of Westfield; seven grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held Saturday at Trinity Baptist Church. The Revs. Tommy Nichols, Walter "Dinky" Terrell and James Quesinberry officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Arrangements were by Howell Funeral Home in Pilot Mountain, N.C.

FLEETUS L. OWENS
Fleetus Lee Owens, 77, of Collinsville, died Tuesday, March 23, 2004, at his residence.
He was born on December 16, 1926 in Stuart and was a son of the late John Elzie and Mary Dalton Owens.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1945-1947 and was stationed in Germany.
He formed Owens Window Corporation in 1960, from which he retired in the late 1980s. He was a former member of First Baptist Church in Martinsville, where he sang in the choir, and was an active member of the Lions Club.
Owens was a founding member of the Plantation Band.
Surviving are two daughters, Karen Owens Jones of Martinsville and Patricia Owens Brown of Summerfield, N.C.; and two grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Thursday at Creasey's Chapel United Methodist Church in Stuart.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Lee Owens Business Scholarship, Patrick Henry Community College, P.O. Box 5311, Martinsville, Va. 24115; or to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, P.O. Box 326, Collinsville, Va. 24078.

C. RAY PETERS
Charles Ray Peters, 83, of Floyd, died Thursday, March 25, 2004, at his home.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Surviving are seven sons, Ray Peters Jr. of Ferrum, Eugene A. Hylton, Tommy Hylton, Harry Hylton of Floyd, Alfred Hylton of Vesta, Clinton Hylton of Willis and John Hylton of Indian Valley; one daughter, Sylvia Boyd of Floyd; one brother, Herman Peters of Stockton, Calif.; two sisters, Ocie Rakes and Peggy Harris, both of Floyd; a sister-in-law; 16 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday at Maberry Funeral Home chapel in Floyd with the Rev. Richard W. Thomas officiating. Burial, with military rites by Floyd V.F.W. Post #7854 and American Legion Post #127, was in the Shelor cemetery.

ANNIE M. PILSON
Annie Mae Morrison Pilson, 84, of Stuart, died Thursday, March 25, 2004, at Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart.
She was born in Patrick County on May 28, 1919 and was a daughter of the late Henry Lee and Myrtle Hash Morrison. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Eva DeHart and Ruth Bennett; a brother, Jimmy Morrison; and her stepmother, Fannie Morrison Wood.
She was a member of Fairystone Baptist Church and had taught Sunday school for over 35 years.
Surviving are her husband, William Clyde Pilson of the home; one daughter, Myrtle Steagall of Stuart; one grandson, Phillip Steagall of Stuart; three sisters, Minnie Mangrum of Stuart, Marie Brink of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Nancy Martin of Laurel Fork; and two brothers, Claude Morrison and Amos Morrison, both of Stuart.
Funeral services were held Saturday at Moody Funeral Home chapel in Stuart with the Revs. Jim Dunn and Amos Morrison officiating. Burial was in the Sycamore Baptist Church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Mike Martin, Steve Martin, Kevin Spencer, Gerald Wright, Gary Wright and Posey Baliles.
Memorial contributions may be made to Fairystone Baptist Church, c/o June Layman, 105 Chevy Lane, Stuart, Va. 24171.

JOHN F. PRICE
John F. Price, 77, of Mountain View Loop, Stuart, died March 16, 2004, at the home of his daughter Lita in Long Island, N.Y.
He was born March 26, 1926 in New York, and retired from Long Island Railroad after more than 30 years of service.
He was a U.S. Army veteran and served in World War II and the Korean Conflict.
Price moved to Patrick County in 1977 and was active in the VFW and American Legion for many years.
Surviving are his wife, Irma Price of Stuart; three daughters, Lita O'Connor, Joan Finck and Veronica Hammer, all of Long Island; one son, John Price of Long Island; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held March 19 on Long Island. Burial, with military rites, was at Calverton National Cemetery in Calverton, N.Y.
A memorial service in Stuart is being planned for a later date.

GEORGE R. PUCKETT
George Raymond "Uncle George" Puckett, 66, of Golf Course Rd., Spencer, died Friday, March 26, 2004, at Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart.
He was born May 21, 1938 in McDowell County, W.Va., and was a son of the late Fred G. and Hazel Gregory Puckett.
He retired after 30 years as a pipe fitter and was of the Christian faith.
Surviving are one son, George R. Puckett Jr. of Daleville; two daughters, Terry P. McDonald of Auburn, Ala., and Vicki P. Davis of Macon County, Ala.; one sister, Nancy Kessee of Ruffin, N.C.; and six grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Monday at Old Well Christian Church. Pastor Zeke Zanatas officiated. Burial was private.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Ravenel Oncology Center in Martinsville, in care of Dr. Arthur Sleeper.
Arrangements were by Howell Funeral Home in Stuart.
