VIRGINIA B. WRENN
Virginia Soyars Boggs Wrenn, 94, of Eden, N.C., died Saturday, October 2, 2004, at Alamance Health Care Center. A Patrick County native, she was a daughter of the late Major Thomas Soyars and Georgia Cruise Soyars. She was also preceded in death by her husbands, William Boggs and Melvin Wrenn; two stepsons, A.D. Boggs and Norman Boggs; four sisters; three brothers and a stepgrandchild. She retired as manager of Long Beach Camp Ground. She was a member of Riverside Baptist Church and attended Bethlehem Christian Church. Surviving are three stepdaughters, Maxine W. Sharpe, Sherrion W. Danieley and Peggy B. Farrell; five stepsons, Vance Wrenn of Reidsville, N.C., Therwell Wrenn, Curtis Wrenn and Carl Wrenn, all of Elon, N.C., and Clelon Wrenn of Burlington, N.C.; two sisters, Jessie Durham Martin of Martinsville and Minnie Troutman of Graham, N.C.; one brother, Silas Soyars of Ringgold, N.C.; 25 stepchildren; 45 stepgreat-grandchildren; eight stepgreat-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at Bethlehem Christian Church by the Revs. Dave Gilbert and Bud Wrenn. Burial was in the church cemetery. DORA M. ADAMS
Dora Martin Adams, 87, of Bassett, died Monday, November 22, 2004, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County. She was born in Rockingham County, N.C., on October 5, 1917 and was a daughter of the late Elder Benjamin H. Martin and Mary Susan Hopkins Martin. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Lemly J. Adams; four sons, Elwood "Woodzie" Adams, Paul Adams, Dale Adams and Tim Adams; two daughters, Joan Marie Adams and Linda Sue Adams; her stepmother, Dovie C. Martin; three brothers, King E. Martin, Willie H. Martin and an infant brother; and a sister, Ellen M. Adams. She was a member of Liberty Primitive Baptist Church for 37 years.
Surviving are one daughter, Doris Hudson of Bassett; four sons, John Adams of Bassett, Carl Adams of Ferrum, and Noel Adams and Daniel Adams, both of Bassett; three brothers, Harry Martin and Benny Martin, both of Bassett, and Jerry Martin of Martinsville; 16 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and three stepgrandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday at Liberty Primitive Baptist Church by Elders John Wingfield and Carl Terry. Burial was in Old Center Primitive Baptist Church cemetery. Pallbearers were Mike Hudson, Tommy Hudson, Donald Adams, Kasim Adams, Lemly Adams, Harrison Adams, Chad Adams, Brian Adams and Terry Adams.

ELOISE S. CASSELL
Eloise Smith Cassell, 76, of Bassett, died Friday, November 26, 2004, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County. She was born on June 8, 1928 in Henry County and was a daughter of the late Frank and Annie Fretwell Smith. She was also preceded in death by her husband, George Oker Cassell, on June 17. She graduated from National Business College with a degree in business. She was a secretary for the Martinsville Nylon Employees' Council in Martinsville, and worked at Bassett Superior Lines, Cassell's Home Improvements and Hooker Furniture Company in Martinsville. She was a member of Blackberry Baptist Church.
Surviving are one daughter, Georgianna Cassell Stegall of Bassett; four grandchildren, including Morgan Elizabeth-Anne Williams of Patrick Springs; and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held Monday at Collins Funeral Chapel with Dr. G.H. Vaughan, the Rev. Glenn Voss, and Dr. Calvin Rains officiating. Burial was in Blackberry Baptist Church cemetery in Bassett. Pallbearers were Corey Sowder, Brandon Rakes, Paul Cassell, Jimmy Cassell, James Sowder and Garland Stegall.

E. LYLE CLARK JR.
Edward Lyle Clark Jr., 73, of Stuart, died Saturday, November 27, 2004, at R.J. Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital. He was born in Patrick County on March 25, 1931 to the late Edward Lyle Clark Sr. and Lucy Ross Clark. He was a 1953 graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute, an active member of Stuart United Methodist Church, and a retired dairy farmer and insurance agent. He served as chairman of the Stuart Cemetery Committee, was a past worthy patron of Stuart Chapter #25 of the Order of the Eastern Star and was a past worshipful master of Mountain Home Lodge #263. He was a former member of the Patrick County School Board, Stuart Rotary Club and Stuart Lions Club, and was a Big Band enthusiast.
Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Betty S. Clark of the home; one daughter, Susan Gasperini of Stuart; two sons, Eddie Clark of Richmond and Perry Clark of Huntersville, N.C.; one sister, Betsy Moir of Salem; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Monday at Stuart United Methodist Church by Dr. Clyde DeLoach and the Rev. Jack Foley. Burial, with Masonic Rites by Mountain Home Lodge #263, was in the Stuart Cemetery. Pallbearers were Glen W. Gunter Jr., W.C. Staples Jr., James E. Hall, David G. Hanby, Herb Fanning, Richard Rogers, Charles Moir, Tracy Gasperini, Joseph F. Clark, Jim George, Leon Gusler, Frank Netherland and W. Curtis Carter.

THOMAS J. COCKRAM
Thomas Jefferson "Tommy" Cockram, 88, of Meadows of Dan, died Thursday, November 25, 2004, at R.J. Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital. He was born in Floyd County to the late Joseph Wooster and Frances Folsom Agee Cockram. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War Ii and was a 1938 graduate of Meadows of Dan High School. He was a member of Mountain View United Methodist Church. Cockram attended Martha Berry College in Rome, Ga., where he pursued a degree in chemical engineering. He was well known for his knowledge of local history.
Surviving are one brother, Bunnie Lawrence Cockram of Meadows of Dan, and a friend, Valerie Shelor of Meadows of Dan.
Graveside services were conducted Sunday at Mountain View United Methodist Church by the Revs. Norman Biggs and Jack Holland. Military rites were conducted by the Patrick County Veterans' Memorial Honor Guard. Pallbearers were Coy Vipperman, Jack Ross, Melvin Stanley, Harvey Spangler, Ray Helms and Richard Conner.

CLAUDE M. GOAD
Claude Marion Goad, 76, of Claudville, died Friday, November 26, 2004, at R.J. Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital. He was born in Patrick County on December 31, 1927 to the late Lehue Franklin Goad and Lula Sophia Marshall Goad. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Edmund Goad, Sterling Goad and Wayne Goad. He retired from Masonite and attended Mary Horner Walker Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are one daughter, Tina Tatum of Patrick Springs; one son, Allen Goad of Stuart; three sisters, Goldie McAlexander of Mount Airy, N.C., Nell Belton of Stuart and Nannie Belle Williams of Chesapeake; three brothers, Lloyd Goad of Stuart, James H. Goad of Virginia Beach and Harry L. Goad of Rancho Cordova, Calif.; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday at Moody Funeral Home chapel in Stuart with Pastor Loren Brown officiating. Burial was in the Mary Horner Walker Presbyterian Church cemetery. Pallbearers were Lucian Goad, Junior Light, Raymond Cruise, John Cruise, Jimmy Belton and Jeff Turner.

MYRTLE H. GREGORY
Myrtle Howell Gregory, 81, of Airway Rd., Spencer, died Wednesday, November 24, 2004, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County. She was born in Patrick County on October 23, 1923 to the later Emmitt O. and Nora Knowles Howell. She was also preceded in death by a son, Jack Howell Gregory; four sisters, Virginia H. Inman, Margie H. Weeks, Lillian H. Cockram and Elva H. Harris; and two brothers, Roy E. Howell and Glenn Howell. She was a member of Friendly Christian Church in Spencer.
Surviving are her husband, Paul A. Gregory Sr. of the home; two sons, Paul A. Gregory Jr. of Amelia and Johnnie W. Gregory of Hopewell; three daughters, Judith A. Green of Spencer, Dianne M. Walters of Bahama, N.C., and Jane E. Gregory of Spencer; one brother, William D. Howell of Martinsville; two sisters, Annie H. Helms of Vesta and Alpha Campinella of Sacramento, Calif.; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Minister Don Forrester officiating. Burial was in the Eden-Knowles cemetery. Pallbearers were Ryan Gregory, Chris Gregory, Charles Green, Edward Green, Cody Watkins and Mahlon Howell.

NANCY A. HALL
Nancy Adams Hall, 69, of Oakhurst Drive, Stuart, died Tuesday, November 30, 2004, at R.J. Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital. She was born in Henry County on April 8, 1935 to the late McCray and Vera Cockran Adams. She was a member of Bouldin Memorial Presbyterian Church and was a former employee of United Elastic Corporation, Lemons' Jewelry, Top Dollar and Sky City Department Stores.
Surviving are her husband, Raymond R. Hall of the home; two daughters, Janet Lawson of Stuart and Sandra K. Hall of Patrick Springs; one son, Jesse Hall of Stuart; one sister, Betty Garcia of Patrick Springs, one brother, Johnny Adams of Wirtz; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 7 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with the Rev. Jack Foley officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.

WILLIAM H. HARPER
William Henderson "Bill" Harper, 90, of Hosta Lane, Meadows of Dan, died Wednesday, November 24, 2004, at Heritage Hall Laurel Meadows Nursing Home in Laurel Fork. He was born in Washington, D.C. on February 13, 1914 to the late William Nathan and Ruth Henderson Harper. He retired from General Electric as a sales manager with 45 years of service. He was a coordinator of Meals on Wheels in Meadows of Dan and was president of the resident council of Laurel Meadows Nursing Home. Harper attended Mayberry Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder.
Surviving are his wife, Audrey Culler Harper; two sons, William H. Harper Jr. of Richland, Wash., and Robert Hampton Harper of Phoenix, Ariz.; one sister, Alice Harper Thornton of Florida; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.

J. DILLARD HELMS
John Dillard Helms, 82, of Meadows of Dan, died Friday, November 19, 2004, at Mission Hospital in Asheville, N.C. He was born in Floyd County on March 12, 1922 to the late John Thomas and Annie Edith Jones Helms. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Leonard Helms, Calvin Helms and Dewey Wayne Helms.
Surviving are two sons, Robert Helms of Maryland and Van Helms of Baltimore, Md.; one daughter, Vicky H. Tutchton of Maryland; one brother, William Bennett Helms of Maryland; two sisters, Reva Knowles of Martinsville and Zettie Martin of Meadows of Dan; and three grandchildren.
A graveside service was held Saturday at Mountain View United Methodist Church cemetery in Meadows of Dan. The Rev. Stewart Childress officiated.
Arrangements were by Moody Funeral Home in Stuart.

GAIL L. SMITH
Gail Leroy Smith, 48, of Mount Airy, N.C., died Monday, November 22, 2004, at his home. He was born August 26, 1956 in Patrick County and was a son of Betty Ilene Pack Smith of the home and the late Charlie Leroy Smith. He was formerly employed at Kasco Produce and was a member of Blue Ridge Baptist Church.
Surviving, in addition to his mother, are one son, Christopher Wayne Smith of Mount Airy; two sisters, Carol Smith Coleman of Claudville and Lisa Edwards Tate of Mount Airy; and two brothers, Bobby Leon Smith and Billy Jay Smith, both of Mount Airy.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.

MAYNARD W. SPENCER
Maynard Wilson Spencer, 68, of Bassett, died Sunday, November 21, 2004, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was born in Bassett on February 14, 1936 and was a son of the late Liss and Elizabeth Stone Spencer. He was also preceded in death by five brothers, Morgan Spencer, Winfred Spencer, Kenneth Spencer, Lowell Spencer and Marion Hollandsworth. He was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 196 A.F. & A.M. of Hampton.
Surviving are his wife, Meredith Wilson Spencer of the home; two daughters, Lucinda "Cindy" Marjorie Draper of Bassett, Teresa "Sissy" Spencer Hollingsworth of Newport News; two sons, Ronald F. Wilson of Bassett and Rocky D. Spencer of Newport News; three brothers, Harry Spencer and Melvin Spencer, both of Bassett, and Stanley Spencer of Woolwine; a sister, Carolyn Turner of Bedford; and three grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Friday at Bassett Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Alan Follett and Brother Harry Shelton officiating.

ELIZABETH G. VIPPERMAN
Elizabeth Griggs Vipperman, 86, of Stuart, died Tuesday, November 23, 2004, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County. She was born in Patrick County on September 12, 1918, and was a daughter of the late Archer W. and Emily Rorrer Griggs. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Herman Vipperman, and a son, Arch Vipperman. She was a long-time employee of the U.S. Postal Service where she retired as postmaster, and was a 1936 graduate of Averett University. She was active in Stuart Baptist Church, where she was a member, Averett Alumni, Stuart Baptist Church Food Pantry and the Stuart Cemetery committee.
Surviving are one son, Joseph Herman Vipperman Jr. of Moneta; four grandchildren; a great-granddaughter and a daughter-in-law.
Funeral services were conducted Friday at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart by Dr. Clint Hopkins. Burial was in Stuart Cemetery. Pallbearers were Bill Staples, Ray Roberson, Mike Vipperman, Phillip Vipperman, Brice Davis, Stephen Terry and Leslie Davis.

JAMES E. WIGINGTON
James Elwood Wigington, 74, of Bassett, died Monday, November 22, 2004, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County. He was born August 4, 1930 in Henry County and was a son of the late Ernest Lincoln and Martha Bell Powell Wigington. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Trula Mae Wigington; his second wife, Janet Sue Wigington; and a son, Ernest Roy "Ernie" Wigington. He was a retired truck driver and equipment mechanic for Gordon Metz and Pinecrest Meats Inc.
Surviving are one daughter, Lesia W. Gignac of Blacksburg; one son, Jerry L. Wigington of Collinsville; one sister, Frances W. Rakes of Patrick Springs; three brothers, Ernest Lincoln Wigington Jr. and Bruce Floyd Wigington, both of Preston, and Roy Thomas "Tom" Wigington of Spencer; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Friday at Community Funeral Services in Ridgeway by Howard Wigington. Burial was in Mountain View Cemetery in Ridgeway. Pallbearers were William Martin, Richard Martin, Jonathan Martin, Jeremy Cannon, Brandon Lester and Lonnie Boyd.

PATSY L. WILLARD
Patsy Louise Lawson Willard, 63, of Sandy Ridge, N.C., died Tuesday, November 23, 2004, at her residence. She was born in Patrick County on March 19, 1941 to the late Jess and Rachel Beasley Lawson. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy L. Willard Sr.
Surviving are three sons, Jimmy L. Willard Jr. of Stuart, Jerry Willard of Sandy Ridge and Jeff Willard of Casar, N.C.; two brothers, Jim Lawson and Bennie Lawson, both of Claudville; one sister, Evelean Gammons of Martinsville; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A graveside service was conducted Friday at Aaron's Corner Primitive Baptist Church by the Rev. Darrell Boles. Pallbearers were Joey Gammons, Danny Goins, Tony Lawson, James Parrish, Howard Rogers, Lee Jackson, Dale Pulliam and R.W. Willard.
Arrangements were by Moody Funeral Home in Stuart.

ERIS R. BARTLETT
Eris Roberts Bartlett, 79, of High Point, N.C., died Friday, January 28, 2005, at High Point Regional Cancer Center. She was born on January 27, 1926 in Stokes County, N.C., and was a daughter of the late William Gerald Roberts and Mabel Berry Roberts. She graduated from Pine Hall High School in Stokes County and attended King's Business College in Raleigh, N.C., and Meredith College in Raleigh, N.C. She was employed in the sales department at Lowe's Building Supply in Raleigh. She was a member of Green Street Baptist Church. On December 18, 1949, she was married to Isaiah Bartlett of the home.
Surviving, in addition to her husband, are one daughter, Marceia L. Bartlett of Stuart; one son, Duff Bartlett of High Point; and two sisters, Christine Corn and husband Dewey of High Point and Winona McKague of Malvern, Pa.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at Green Street Baptist Church chapel by Dr. Alan Cox, the Rev. Gene Phillips and Dr. Elliott Stewart. Burial was in Floral Garden Memorial Park. DOROTHY B. BAUM
Dorothy Brown Baum, 68, of Mount Airy, N.C., died Friday, January 28, 2005, at her home. She was born in Surry County, N.C., on January 16, 1937 to Merlin Sparger and Sarah Phoebe Bondurant Brown. She was also preceded in death by a son, David Scales, and a brother, Joe Bill Brown. She was retired from Cross Creek Apparel and was a member of Hunters Chapel Church.
Surviving are her husband, James E. (Jim) Baum of the home; one daughter, Carol Scales of Charlotte, N.C.; two sons, Lloyd Scales of Ararat and Merlin Scales of the home; one stepson, James E. Baum of Raleigh, N.C.; one sister, Elizabeth "Lib" Brown Carter of Mount Airy; three grandchildren; a one great-grandson; and a sister-in-law.
A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday at Hunters Chapel Church. The Revs. Darren Slate and John McCann will officiate. The family will receive friends at the home at 3470 Riverside Drive, Mount Airy, following the memorial service. JONATHAN W. BOWLING
Corporal Jonathan Williams Bowling, 23, of Stuart, was killed in the line of duty while serving in Iraq with the United States Marines on Wednesday, January 26, 2005. He was born in Martinsville on November 24, 1981. Corporal Bowling was a member of Bouldin Memorial Presbyterian Church, where he was a past elder, and had received an associate's degree from Patrick Henry Community College in administration of justice. He had worked at Stuart Flooring, and was a counselor at Hargrave Military Academy. He received his basic training with the U.S. Marines at Parris Island, S.C., and received his combat engineer training at Camp LeJeune. He entered the Marine Corps Reserve Unit at Lynchburg. He became employed as a patrolman with the Martinsville City Police on December 15, 2002, and was called to active duty with the Marine Corps on June 28, 2004. He was assigned to Camp Pendleton, Calif., and was deployed to Iraq on August 14, 2004.
Surviving are his father and stepmother, Darrell Conner Bowling and Rita Goad Bowling of Stuart; his mother and stepfather, Robin Pilson Bowling Feron and Greg Feron of Stuart; his twin sisters, Ashley Bowling and Brooke Bowling, both of Stuart; two stepsisters, Raina Brim of Ararat and Amelia Feron of Williamsburg; his fiancée, Tonya McFarling of Ridgeway; his best friend, Clint Weidhaas of Stuart; his grandfather, T.J. Bowling of Stuart; grandmothers, Beulah Pilson and Betsy Bowling, both of Stuart; and stepgrandmothers, Mary Elizabeth Lindh of Stuart and Olive Goad of Dugspur. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, John Henry Pilson.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. in the Patrick County High School auditorium with the Revs. John Boyd and Harold Moffitt officiating. Burial, with military rites by the U.S. Marine Corps, will follow in the Pilson family cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight (Wednesday) from 6 to 8 p.m. in the PCHS auditorium. JOSEPHINE H. COLLINS
Josephine Hill Collins, 72, of Collinstown Rd., Stuart, died Wednesday, January 26, 2005, at R.J. Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital in Stuart. She was born October 6, 1932 in Stokes County, N.C., to the late Rudolphus "Dolph" Hill and Geneva "Jennie" Smith Hill. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Harry Lee Collins; a granddaughter, Jennifer Denny; three sisters, Wilma Jessup, Nellie Mankins and Myrtle Jefferson; and two brothers, James Hill and Thomas Deward Hill. She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are two daughters, Vickie Bullins of Westfield, N.C., and Jan Denny of King, N.C.; one son, Danny Collins of Lexington, N.C.; four grandchildren and two stepgrandchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday at Howell-Nelson Funeral chapel of Pilot Mountain, N.C. The Revs. Rickey Rogers and Tracey Collins officiated. Burial was held Saturday in the State Line Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.

LAYMON E. FAIN
Laymon Elwood Fain, 81, of American Legion Rd., Stuart, died January 27, 2005, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
He was born in Patrick County on May 1, 1923 and was a son of the late John A. and Daisy Hylton Fain. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Lillie Maude Fain; a daughter, Margaret Fain Plaster; two sisters, Ethel Fain and Eva Fain; and four brothers, Leonard Fain, Lowell Fain, Lyle Fain and Lawrence Fain. He retired from Stuart Lumber Company and was a deacon of Stuart Primitive Baptist Church.
Surviving are one grandson, Steve Plaster of Patrick Springs; one son-in-law, Wayne Plaster of Patrick Springs; one sister, Edna Hill of Claudville; one brother, Camden Fain of Stuart; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday at Howell Funeral Home in Stuart. Elders J.D. Belton and James Flippin officiated. Burial was in Patrick Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to Stuart Primitive Baptist Church, c/o Ruby Slaughter, 1061 Dobyns Rd., Stuart, Va. 24171.
