JESSIE H. FOLEY
Jessie Alma Hodges Foley, 86, of Collinsville, died Saturday, May 28, 2005, at her home.
She was born in Patrick County on July 29, 1918, to Dillard Hodges and Olin Fain Hodges. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James "Todd" Foley; a daughter, Mildred Hughes; a son, James W. Foley II; four brothers, Manuel Hodges, Gilmer Hodges, Odell Hodges and an infant brother; and two sisters, Wilbur Hall and Rachel Hughes.
She worked at American Furniture and American Standard Homes.
Surviving are six daughters, Betty Jean William of South Carolina, Alma Mullins of Patrick Springs, JoAnn Downs and Hilda Parker, both of Georgia, Annice Faye Dunford of Collinsville and Carolyn Eames of Martinsville; two sisters, Audrey Fain of Stuart and Opal Williams of Stuart; two brothers, Richard Hodges of Stuart and Clarence Hodges of Randleman, N.C.; 24 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Monday at Bassett Funeral Service by Pastor Tony Lundy. Burial was in Roselawn Burial Park.
Pallbearers were Steve Hughes, Bobby Hughes, Joe Hundley, Kenny Hylton and James Booth.

CARITA R. GRAVELY
Carita Ross Gravely, 99, of Martinsville, died Saturday, May 28, 2005, at her home.
She was born in Patrick County on April 6, 1906, to the late Charles Brewster and Mattie McKenzie Ross. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Broaddus Fleming Gravely in 1962; two sisters, Lillian Ross Tatum and Louise Ross Nobel; and three brothers, Buren Ross, Guy Warren Ross and Conrad Ross.
She was a graduate of Madison College, now James Madison University, and was retired after teaching for 40 years in the Henry County School System. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, and was a Red Cross volunteer at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County. She was a member of Sycamore Baptist Church.
Surviving are one sister, Betsy Miers of Martinsville, and several nieces and nephews.
The graveside service will be private.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 3907, Martinsville, Va. 24115.
Arrangements are by McKee-Stone Funeral Services.

JUANITA C. JOHNSON
Juanita Campbell Johnson, 74, of Collinsville, died Friday, May 27, 2005, at Lewis-Gale Medical Center.
She was born August 20, 1930, in Patrick County to Dewey and Bertha Wigington Campbell. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Wayne Lee Johnson.
She was employed at Monday & Monday Law Offices for 27 years, and was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are two stepdaughters, Barbara J. Wren of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Catherine J. McGee of Martinsville; four stepgrandchildren; and one stepgreat-grandchild.
A graveside funeral was held Monday at Roselawn Burial Park with Brother Troy Hollandsworth Jr. officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1079 Spruce St., Martinsville, Va. 24112.

VIRGINIA D. MARTIN
Virginia Dare Martin, 58, of Collinsville, died Friday, May 27, 2005, at her home.
She was born in Stuart on July 19, 1946, to Marie Martin Gibson and the late Leonard G. Martin. She was also preceded in death by her stepfather, Lee B. Gibson; grandmothers, Estelle Martin and Della Martin; and grandfathers, Steve Martin and Clarence Martin.
She was a member of Collinsville Baptist Church and had 30 years of perfect attendance in the Ladies' Sunday Class.
Surviving, in addition to her mother, are one sister, Mary Ann Adams of Ridgeway; two brothers, Gary L. Martin of Byron, Ga., and Larry G. Martin of Glen Allen, Va.; and several uncles, nephews and nieces.
The funeral was held Monday at Collinsville Baptist Church with the Rev. Tracy Freeman officiating. Burial was in Roselawn Burial Park.
Pallbearers were Dennis Shelton, Bradon Shelton, Brad Shelton, Richie Martin, Richard Martin, Rickie Shelton, Bob Pettit, Jeff Perdue, Charles Moore, Will Moore, Winfred Hall, Charlie Hall and Arthur Boyd.
Bassett Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

EVELYN C. VAUGHN
Evelyn C. Vaughn, 86, of Roanoke, died Monday May 23, 2005.
She was raised in Patrick County and was a daughter of the late John Henry and Anna Conner Cassell. She was also preceded in death by her husband, L.B. Vaughn, and two sisters, Dorothy and Verna Cassell.
She was an accomplished artist who specialized in oil paintings and taught art in her home. She was of the Primitive Baptist faith and attended various Primitive Baptist churches including her home church, the Dan River Primitive Baptist Church in Meadows of Dan.
Surviving are one son, Alvin Vaughn of Kingston, N.Y.; one daughter, Shirley Rhodes of Fincastle; one sister, Eva Cruise of Eden N.C.; three brothers, James Cassell of Roanoke, Leonard Cassell of Bristol, and John Cassell Jr. of Vesta.; four grandchildren four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral service were held Friday at Oakey's North Chapel in Roanoke. Elder Brumfield and the Rev. Curtis E. Nester officiated. Burial was in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.

BEULAH M. BENTON
Beulah Martin Benton, 89, of Axton, died Saturday, June 4, 2005, at Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart.
She was born December 30, 1915 in Stokes County, N.C., and was a daughter of the late Posey Lester Martin and Revie Reid Martin. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Aaron Benton; a son, Laddie L. Benton; two daughters, Lois J. Williams and Revie B. Wooley; three brothers, Howard Martin, Swanson Martin and Elder James Martin; and a sister, Matilda Kellam.
She was a homemaker and was a member of Sandy Ridge Primitive Baptist Church.
Surviving are three sons, Himond L. Benton and William C. Benton, both of Martinsville, and Elder James L. Benton of Stuart; two daughters, Joan B. Dickerson of Axton and Lanita B. Hodnett of Blairs; two brothers, Frank H. Martin of Spencer and Leonard Martin of Baltimore, Md.; 17 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday) at noon at Sandy Ridge Primitive Baptist Church. Elders Joe Scales, Walter Scales and Carl Morgan will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service.
Arrangements are by Hairston Funeral Home.

RAYMOND BRANCH
Raymond Branch, 73, of Bassett, died Wednesday, June 1, 2005, at Beverly Healthcare.
He was born in Patrick County on October 7, 1931 to the late Edd and Ruth Ellen Scott Branch. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Clara Debbie Branch; a daughter, Jeannie Marie Branch; and three brothers, Calvin Branch, William Branch and Leonard Branch.
He was a truck driver for Stoneville Furniture Company, formerly R.P. Thomas Trucking and formerly Glosson Motor Lines.
Surviving are three daughters, Susan Branch Bartlett of Lee, Me., and Rebecca Branch Ferguson and Dixie Branch Fitzgerald, both of Bassett; one son, Mike Raymond Branch of Bassett; one brother, Abe Branch of Walkertown, N.C.; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

ESSIE C. CASSELL
Essie Irene Clifton Cassell, 91, of Meadows of Dan, died Saturday, June 4, 2005, at Twin County Regional Hospital in Galax.
She was born September 10, 1913 in Patrick County to the late Alga Delmon Clifton and Rosa Rakes Clifton. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Posie Lester Cassell; two sisters, Dorothy Clifton Cassell and Vernelle Clifton Boyd; and two brothers, Arzie Ewell Clifton and Ramon Alga Clifton.
Surviving are one daughter, Betty Lou Cassell Banks and husband Harlon Thomas Banks of Meadows of Dan; two sons, Donnie Lester Cassell and wife Norma Harrell Cassell and Roy Waymon Cassell and wife Angelie Culler Cassell, all of Meadows of Dan; two sisters, Lillian Clifton Wood and Reva Clifton Reeves, both of Pelham, N.C.; one brother, William "Bill" Clifton of Ingleside, Ill.; six grandchildren, Lori LeAnn Banks of Marina del Rey, Calif., Lester Clay Cassell and wife Merrith Epps Cassell of Charlotte, N.C.; Jana Kaye Cassell Bush and husband Mike of Spartanburg, S.C.; Barry Allen Cassell of Charlotte, N.C.; and Brian Thomas Banks and wife Ashley Goins Banks and Roy DeWayne Cassell and wife Amanda Joyce Cassell, all of Meadows of Dan; three great-grandchildren, Elisabeth Cassell, Kaitlyn Bush and Kyle Bush.
Funeral services were conducted Monday at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart by the Rev. Clarence Marshall. Burial was in the Plasters family cemetery in Vesta.
Pallbearers were Clay Cassell, Barry Cassell, Brian Banks, Dewayne Cassell, Mark Wood and Chuck Cochran.

HILDA O. McMILLIAN
Hilda Odom McMillian, 88, of Salem Hwy., Stuart, died Monday, June 6, 2005, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice in Winston-Salem, N.C.
She was born in North Little Rock, Ark., on April 29, 1917 to the late Fletcher C. and Maude Rector Odom. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Bonita J. Bodlien; two sisters, Pauline and Lanta; a brother, Jack Odom; and a grandchild, Hannah Basinger.
She attended Moody Bible Institute and was a member of Mid-Baptist Missions. She was a homemaker and a member of Bethel Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Eugene F. McMillian of the home; two daughters, Rena M. Nunley of Brazil and Starla M. Basinger of Winston-Salem; four sons, Daniel V. McMillian of Rockmart, Ga., Stephen R. McMillian of Honey Brook, Pa., Benjamin Q. McMillian of Lebanon, Pa., and Marcus J. McMillian of Winston-Salem; 20 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Bethel Baptist Church, 3035 NC 8 Hwy. S, Walnut Cove, N.C. Pastor Keith L. Heitman will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27103.
Arrangements are by Howell Funeral Home in Stuart.

RUTH H. STOVALL
Ruth Holt Stovall, 86, of Stuart, died Sunday, June 5, 2005, at R.J. Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital.
She was born in Patrick County on June 5, 1919 and was a daughter of the late Jim and Bertha Smoot Holt. She was also preceded in death by her two husbands, Richard "Dick" Stovall and Walter Stovall; a son, Richard "Wimpy" Stovall; and three brothers, Richard Holt, Ralph Holt and Raymond Holt.
She had been a resident of Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart for over six years. She retired from J.P. Stevens and was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are one daughter, Nancy Curry of Stuart; two sons, Jim Stovall and Lloyd Stovall, both of Stuart; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was conducted Tuesday at Patrick Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Jim Churchwell.
Arrangements were by Moody Funeral Home in Stuart.

BENJAMIN F. BARROW JR.
Benjamin "Ben" Franklin Barrow Jr., 81, of Martinsville, died Sunday, June 12, 2005, at his home.
He was born April 18, 1924 in Henry County and was a son of Benjamin F. and Annie Thomasson Barrow. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Wight Barrow; and several brothers and sisters.
He served in the U.S. Navy and participated in the D-Day invasion at Utah Beach during World War II. He was a long-distance truck driver for National Building Systems with 43 years of service.
Barrow was a member of Christ Episcopal Church and the Liza Ramey Woodson Sunday school class. He served on the transportation and ushering committees and was a member of the Men's Breakfast Club.
Surviving are his wife, Nadine Jones Barrow of the home; four daughters, Shelly Barrow of Patrick County, Dee Ferguson of Sandy Ridge, N.C., Sharon Smith of Martinsville and Valerie Barrow of Spencer; two stepdaughters, Kelly J. Hurt of Marietta, Ga., and Jan J. Printz of Suwanee, Ga.; one stepson, W. Conrad Jones of Ashburn; one sister, Nancy B. Frith of Martinsville; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Friday at Christ Episcopal Church with Dr. Ellen Hanckel and the Rev. Linwood Wells officiating.
The family will receive friends at the home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Christ Episcopal Church, P.O Box 4162, Martinsville, Va. 24115; or to Hospice of Memorial Hospital in Martinsville, P.O Box 478, Martinsville, Va. 24115.
Arrangements are by Norris Funeral Services and Crematory.

WILLIAM BOWMAN
William Bowman, 94, of Ararat Hwy., Claudville, died June 9, 2005, at Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart.
He was born May 7, 1911 in Patrick County and was a son of the late Joe and Lou Pack Bowman. He was also preceded in death by two infant stepsisters.
Surviving are a half-sister, Mary Bowman of Stuart, and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held Saturday at the family cemetery in Claudville with Kelly Ratcliff officiating.
Arrangements were by Howell Funeral Home in Stuart.

PRINCESS T. GOINS
Princess K. Thompson Goins, 92, died Wednesday, June 8, 2005, at Central Continuing Care in Mount Airy, N.C.
She was born December 29, 1912 in Patrick County and was a daughter of the late Murry and Ruth Childress Thompson. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Euel William Goins; three sons, Allen Goins, Charles Goins and Grover Goins; sisters, Katie Brim, Gilley Thompson and Cora Harrell; and brothers, Bob Thompson, Alex Thompson, Otis Thompson and Jack Thompson.
She was a homemaker and was a member of Harrell Hill Church of God.
Surviving are four daughters, Catherine Smith of Ararat, Mozelle Hawks and Peggy Haynes, both of Mount Airy, and Juanita Jarrell of Cincinnati, Oh.; four sons, Jay Goins, Bobby Goins, and Frank Goins, all of Mount Airy, and Herbert Goins of Virginia; one sister, Virginia Turney of Mount Airy; 21 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday at Moody Funeral Home chapel in Mount Airy with the Rev. Dean Eaton and Bill Hiatt officiating. Burial was in Skyline Memory Gardens.

BARBARA W. FODDRELL
Barbara Jean Wimbush Foddrell, 71, of Salem Hwy., Stuart, died Wednesday, June 8, 2005, at Stokes-Reynolds Memorial Hospital in Danbury, N.C.
She was born in Patrick County on October 23, 1933 to the late Lester and Nannie Conner Wimbush. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Turner Lewis Foddrell; a daughter, Teressa Foddrell; a grandchild, Tresa Foddrell; three brothers, Alfred Wimbush, Curtis Wimbush and Bernard Wimbush; and a sister, Annie Lee Wells.
She was co-owner of Foddrell's Food Market and had worked for J.P. Stevens, Inc. She was a member of Iron Belt Christian Church.
Surviving are one daughter, Jeannie Clark of Stuart; four sons, Jerome Foddrell of Atlanta, Ga., Lynn Foddrell and Allison Foddrell, both of Stuart, and Dale Foddrell of Greensboro, N.C.; five brothers, Junior Wimbush of Woolwine, James Wimbush of Bassett, Leon Wimbush of Stoneville, N.C., Clifford Wimbush of Fieldale and Joe Wimbush of Roanoke; two sisters, Virginia Ann Hairston of Spencer and Dorothy Wells of Woolwine; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held Saturday at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart. Elder Junior Wimbush officiated. Burial was in the Wimbush family cemetery.
Pallbearers were Allison Foddrell, Lynn Foddrell, Jerome Foddrell, Dale Foddrell, Jerdon Foddrell and Julian Foddrell.

DOROTHY H. HORTON
Dorothy Howell Horton, 64, of Martinsville, died Friday, June 10, 2005, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
She was born July 22, 1940 in Patrick County and was a daughter of the late Thomas and Nellie Handy Howell. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Sestress G. Horton; two sisters, Earline Farthing and Crystal Ogle; and two brothers, Chester Howell and Lonnie Howell.
She retired from Bassett-Walker with over 30 years of employment.
Surviving are three daughters, Debra Cockram of Lexington, N.C., Kathy Gravely of Martinsville and Lorrie Cunningham of Martinsville; two sons, Sestress Horton Jr. of Martinsville and James K. Horton of Martinsville; two sisters, Mary Farquer of Dry Pond and Cathy Wagoner of Patrick Springs; two half-sisters, Helen Swaney of Hendersonville, N.C. and Diane Smith of Sandy Ridge, N.C.; two brothers, Leroy Howell of Stuart and Cleo Howell of Hendersonville; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at Howell Funeral Home chapel in Stuart with Chris Robertson officiating. Burial was in the Boyd-Cockram family cemetery in Meadows of Dan.
