JACK CHAPPELL
Jack Chappell, 70, of Cana, Va., died Monday, August 15, 2005, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.
He was born January 2, 1935 and was a son of the late Columbus Franklin and Lillie Mae Edwards Chappell. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Edwin Franklin Chappell, Janice Weldon Chappell and Alon Lee Chappell. He was a self-employed painter and was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Marshall Chappell of the home; one daughter, Cheray Hensley, and one son, Jeff Bowman, both of Cana; one sister, Violet Jewell Boyd of Ararat; one brother, William Cecil Chappell of Cana; and one granddaughter.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 17, at Solid Rock Baptist Church in Cana. The Revs. Roy Quesenberry and Oscar Hill officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.

NANCY A. DeHART
Nancy Adams DeHart, 70, of Bassett and formerly of Charlotte, N.C., died Sunday, August 21, 2005, at Stanleytown Health Care.
She was born October 24, 1934 in Philpott to Mattie Sue Franklin Adams of Bassett and the late Robert Lester Adams. She was a graduate of Bassett High School and Perry Business School. She was formerly employed in the office of Bassett Furniture Industries and was a housewife. She was a member of Bassett Memorial United Methodist Church. She and her husband had a home in Meadows of Dan.
Surviving, in addition to her mother, are her husband, Howard B. DeHart; one sister, Betty Adams Voss of Bassett; one brother, Robert E. "Pete" Adams of Bassett; and numerous other relatives.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at Collins Funeral Services chapel in Bassett. The Revs. Allen Follett and Glenn Voss officiating. Burial was in Roselawn Burial Park.

DANNY R. FIELDS
Danny R. Fields, 54, of Eden, N.C., died Saturday, August 20, 2005, at his home.
He was born in Stuart on February 19, 1951 and was a son of the late Joseph Franklin and Lillie Mae Branch Fields. He was a truck driver.
Surviving are two sons, Stephen Andrew Fields of Oak Level and Robert Ray Fields of Eden; one brother, Joseph F. Fields of Richmond; one sister, Mary Joyce Jaeger of California; and one grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday) at Roselawn Chapel Funeral Home by Minister Dale Wilson. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park.

BERTHA H. GAMMONS
Bertha Hayden Gammons, 94, of Ararat, died Monday, August 22, 2005, at Surry Community Nursing Center.
She was born in Patrick County on May 11, 1911 and was a daughter of the late Hubbard and Nancy Victoria Newman Hayden. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Raymond William Gammons; three sisters, Agnes Goins, Eva Willard and Mae White; and seven brothers, Ed Hayden, Ernest Hayden, Frank Hayden, Tom Hayden, Russell Hayden, George Hayden and Fred Hayden. She was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are one daughter, Nancy Hill of Ararat; two sons, Eugene Gammons and Irvin Gammons, both of Ararat; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law and a brother-in-law.
A graveside service will be held today (Wednesday) at 11 a.m. at Red Bank Primitive Baptist Church. The Rev. Darren Slate will officiate.

TERESA H. GAMMONS
Teresa Hughes Gammons, 47, of Martinsville, died Saturday, August 20, 2005, at Moses-Cone Hospital in Greensboro, N.C.
She was born in Danbury, N.C., on February 10,1958 and was a daughter of the late James R. and Vada Pendleton Hughes. She was employed by the Henry County Public Schools as a bus driver and formerly worked with Tultex for many years. She also worked for the Martinsville Speedway. She was active in various civic clubs including Bass Masters, where she served as secretary and treasurer.
Surviving are her husband, Ronnie Gammons of the home; sons, Gary Gammons and James Gammons, both of Ridgeway; sisters, Darnell Cochram and Jane Hughes, both of Martinsville; brothers, James E. (Jimmy) Hughes of Seattle, Wash., and Charles E. Hughes of Stuart; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at Norris Funeral Services chapel with the Rev. Terry Knighten officiating. Burial was in Roselawn Burial Park in Martinsville.

WALLER N. GILBERT III
Waller Noel "Sonny" Gilbert III, 64, of Collinsville, died Thursday, August 18, 2005, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
He was born in Patrick County on June 14, 1941 and was a son of Estelle Brown Gilbert of Martinsville and Waller N. "Bruce" Gilbert Jr. He was also preceded in death by a son, Robert Lee "Bobby" Swain. He had served in the U.S. Air Force and had been an engineer at CPFilms for 27 years. He was a member of the Patrick Henry Patriots Flying Club.
Surviving are his wife, Fredia Ann Bolt Gilbert of the home; one daughter, Melissa Ann Cassell of Portsmouth; three brothers, Charles Gilbert of Martinsville, Eddie Gilbert of Petersburg and Ricky Gilbert of Richmond; and one granddaughter.
A memorial service was held Sunday at Norris Funeral Services chapel with J.D. Draper officiating.

MARGARET W. MILLER
Margaret Virginia Woolwine Miller, 95, died Wednesday, August 17, 2005.
She was born July 17, 1910 in Woolwine and was a daughter of the late Lucy Dunkley and Rufus Edgar Woolwine. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Mabel Mason and Irene Whitfield. She attended Hollins College and Salem College in North Carolina. She and her husband lived in Fairfax County where he was a lawyer with the Securities Exchange Commission and she was a homemaker and community volunteer. They later moved to Kansas City, Mo.
Survived are her husband of 75 years, Herbert Daniel Miller; one son, Herbert Daniel Miller Jr., and his wife Jeanie; one daughter, Margaret "Peggy" Miller Zilm and her husband Frank; four grandchildren, Nicholas Daniel Miller, Elizabeth Miller Korchnak, Gregory Miller Zilm and Andrew Daniel Zilm; and sisters, Lucy Anderson and Grace Garvey;
A memorial service was held on Friday at Kingswood Senior Living Community in Kansas City.

C. ELLIS REYNOLDS
Claude Ellis Reynolds, 70, of Patrick Springs, died Monday, August 22, 2005, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
He was born in Patrick County on July 11, 1935 to the late Hardin Estridge Reynolds and Nannie Ratliff Reynolds Martin. He was also preceded in death by a stepson, Ronald Belcher; a stepgrandson, Chris Belcher; and a brother, Doug Reynolds. He was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church and was a self-employed construction worker.
Surviving are his wife, Ivalien Belcher Reynolds of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Connell and Gloria Reynolds of Eden, N.C.; one brother and sister-in-law, Calvin and Linda Reynolds of Patrick Springs; one sister, Hilda Nittler of Bassett; and two grandchildren, Ashleigh Reynolds and Mary Beth Reynolds.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with the Revs. Calvin Reynolds, Mark Wright and Connell Reynolds officiating. Burial will be in the Mountain View United Methodist Church cemetery in Meadows of Dan. The family will receive friends tonight (Wednesday) from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

MARY T. RUSSELL
Mary Janice Talley Russell, 55, of Stuart, died Thursday at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.
She was born May 21, 1950 in High Point, N.C., and was a daughter of the late Robert Wiley and Maude Largen Talley. She was a graduate of High Point Central High School and the Forsyth Hospital School of Nursing and was a registered nurse. She formerly lived in Naples, Italy, and traveled in Europe.
Surviving are four children, Patrick Largen Russell and Brian McGale Russell, both of Baltimore, Md.; and Erin Tamara Russell and Collin Joshua Russell, both of Stuart; two brothers, Robert Jonathan Talley of Lexington, N.C., and Joseph Christopher Talley of High Point; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday at Harvest Point Church with the Rev. Rick Blackmore officiating. Burial was in Guilford Memorial Park.

MILDRED P. SHELTON
Mildred Pauline Shelton, 81, of Hardie Stone Rd., Patrick Springs, died Friday, August 19, 2005, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
She was born on October 26, 1923 to the late James Harbour Gilley and Alice Spencer Gilley. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Vernard Albert Shelton; a sister, Frances Marie Gilley; and an infant brother. She was retired from Bassett-Walker and was a long-time member of Liberty Primitive Baptist Church.
Surviving are one daughter, Glenda Joyce of Martinsville; one son, Albert Daryl Shelton of Patrick Springs; three sisters, Madeline Adams and Myrtle Wright, both of Patrick Springs and Dolly McNabb of Atlanta, Ga.; one brother, John Albert Gilley of Bassett; and one granddaughter.
Funeral services were held Monday at Moody Funeral Home chapel in Stuart with Elder John Wingfield officiating. Burial was in the Liberty Primitive Baptist Church cemetery. Pallbearers were Jimmie Adams, Jerry Adams, Dean Adams, Larry Wright, Jerry Joyce, Neil Fulcher and Ron Shelton.

CHARLES K. SMITH
Charles Kenneth Smith, 69, of Roswell, Ga., died Monday, August 15, 2005.
He was born in Sandy Ridge, N.C., on December 1, 1935 and was a son of the late Charlie O. and Mattie Poore Smith. He worked 24 years with Western Electric Co. in various field operations for missile programs around the world. He also worked with Southern Bell, Bell South and Six "R" Communications. He was a member of Roswell United Methodist Church and the Telephone Pioneers of America. He was a U.S. Army veteran and was a member of the American Legion where he served as senior vice commander.
Surviving are his wife, Jolene Smith of Roswell; one daughter, Tammy Smith of Lompoc, Calif.; two sons, Bobby Smith of Woodstock and Charles Smith of Apex, N.C.; two sisters, Gracie Joyce of Stoneville, N.C., and Inice Reynolds of Patrick Springs; two brothers, Willard Smith of Ridgeway and Danny Wayne Smith of Madison, N.C.; five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Friday at Northside Chapel Funeral Home in Roswell.

BETH A. THOMPSON
Mary Elizabeth "Beth" Ammons Thompson, 52, of Stuart, died Thursday, August 18, 2005, at her home on Thompson's Mountain.
She was born September 2, 1952 at the Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte, N.C., and was the daughter of Mary M. Ammons of Harrisonburg and the late Rev. James M. Ammons. She was a member of Stuart Presbyterian Church, where she served as an elder for 10 years and treasurer for two years prior to her illness. She was also currently serving on the Peaks Presbytery Council, having served on the Committee on Ministry in Peaks Presbytery for six years prior to her appointment. Beth considered church work her primary mission in life and always looked for ways to serve Christ with her gifts and talents through Christian ministry. She worked for Stuart Drug Store for 10 years before it was sold. She will be missed by her family, her extensive church family, and all who knew her.
Surviving, in addition to her mother, are her husband, William N. Thompson Jr. of the home; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Jimmy and Phyllis Ammons of Shipman and Charlie and Bea Ammons of Harrisonburg; two stepdaughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Frank Putnam of Cincinnati, Oh., and Tammy and Arthur Harrison of Ararat; two grandsons, Philip and Will Putnam; two nephews and their wives, Chad and Julie Ammons and Wesley and Jessica Ammons.
There will be a celebration of the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ and the life of Beth Thompson at Stuart Presbyterian Church Sunday, August 28, at 4 p.m. with the Revs. Bucky Hunsicker and George Goodman officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Stuart Presbyterian Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 944, Stuart, Va. 24171.

AUDREY S. VERNON
Audrey Virginia Smart Vernon, 79, of Mount Airy, N.C., died Monday, August 15, 2005, at Northern Hospital of Surry County.
She was born in Patrick County on May 28, 1926 and was a daughter of the late Clarender and Mamie Williams Smart. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Wayne Vernon, and two brothers, Soanie Smart and Darst Smart. She was a retired nurse and was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church.
Surviving are four sons, Edward Vernon of Mount Airy, Thedford Vernon of Boonville, N.C., Donald Vernon of Mocksville, N.C., and Randall Vernon of Rural Hall, N.C.; six brothers, Nathan Smart of Dublin, Kernie Smart of Martinsville, Elzie Smart of Spencer, Kirby Smart of Sandy Ridge, N.C., Dillard Smart of Meadows of Dan and Robin Smart of Patrick Springs; four sisters, Gaye Browne of Mount Airy, Emma Joy Hicks of Butner, NC, Gloria Martin of Bassett and Carol Sutphin of Meadows of Dan; five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
Funeral services were held Thursday at Moody Funeral Home chapel in Mount Airy with the Revs. Jimmy McCraw and Bud Cameron officiating. Burial was in the New Bethel Baptist Church cemetery.

DORN V. WILLIAMS SR.
Dorn V. Williams Sr., 71, of Stuart, died Saturday, August 20, 2005, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
He was born on March 11, 1934 in Patrick County to the late V.R. and Lowell Conner Williams. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Lane C. Williams and Billy D. Williams.
He attended Hargrave Military Academy and served in the U.S. Navy. He was a former Patrick County sheriff's deputy. He was involved in several area businesses including family properties, a small loan company, a local laundry, discount stores and CarQuest. In 1985, Williams purchased the Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart and later built the Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Martinsville and Henry County which is now known as the Blue Ridge Rehab Center. In 1996 he built the Landmark Center in Stuart and later purchased and operated the Highland Ridge Rehab Center in Dublin. He was a Class A contractor and built several residential and commercial properties. Williams was a member of Stuart Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Dae Reynolds Williams of the home; three sons, D. Victor Williams Jr. of Stuart, Gerald Bain Williams of Stuart and Bart T. Williams of Dublin; four sisters, Betsy Bowling of Stuart, Sue Griffith of Boones Mill, Carol Vernon of Stuart and Sherry Meng of Lexington, S.C., five brothers, Richard A. Williams of Prince Frederick, Md., Christian V. Williams, Buddy E. Williams, Mica A. Williams and Gary C. Williams, all of Stuart; and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at Moody Funeral Home chapel in Stuart with the Revs. Bucky Hunsicker and Jim Churchwell officiating. Entombment was in Patrick Memorial Gardens.

TIMOTHY L. BARBOUR
Timothy Lee Barbour, 19, of Bassett, died Friday, October 28, 2005.
He was born December 26, 1985 in Martinsville to Robert Lee Barbour of Bassett and Angelia Denise Murdock of Axton.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Essie "Kat" Hankins and Opal Severt.
He was an employee of Nautica and was a member of Union Chapel Church.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his wife, Lori Beth Barbour of the home; his stepmother, Rhonda Barbour of Stuart; three brothers, Corrie Barbour of Bassett, Kevin Murdock of Axton and Dylan Barbour of Bassett; one sister, Ciji Barbour of Bassett; two stepbrothers, Joseph Clark and Paul Clark, both of Collinsville; a maternal grandfather, Jerry Severt of Axton; and step-grandparents, Ronald Mullins of Bassett and Glenda and Ronald Wiess of Woolwine.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Colbert-Moran chapel with the Revs. Susan Adkins and Kenny Harris officiating. Burial will be in Gretna Burial Park.

BUNNIE L. COCKRAM
Bunnie Lawrence Cockram, 95, of Langhorne Mill Rd., Meadows of Dan, died Monday, October 31, 2005, at his home.
He was born in Floyd County on April 25, 1910 to the late Joseph Wooster Cockram and Frances F. Agee Cockram. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Tommy Cockram.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Tella Mae Conner Cockram of the home; a number of nieces and nephews and one aunt.
Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday) at 4 p.m. at Mountain View United Methodist Church. Bill Banks and James Houchins will officiate. Burial, with military rites by the Patrick County Veterans' Memorial Honor Guard, will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
Arrangements are by Moody Funeral Home in Stuart.

JEWELL C. CONNER
Jewell Cochran Conner, 79, of Shelor Rd. S.W., Meadows of Dan, died Saturday, October 29, 2005, at her residence.
She was born in Roanoke on December 2, 1925 and was a daughter of the late Olie J. and Arlie Bolt Cochran. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, James A. Conner.
She lived in Ormand Beach, Fla., for 30 years where she worked as a bookkeeper for G.C. Murphy & Co. She and her husband Jim moved back to Meadows of Dan in 1987. She was a member of Mountain View United Methodist Church and served as treasurer of the VFW Ladies' Auxiliary for many years.
Surviving are one daughter, Linda C. Crabtree of Meadows of Dan; two sisters, Nadene C. Barnard and Veda C. Webb, both of Meadows of Dan, and other family members.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday) at Howell Funeral Home in Stuart by Minister Terry Martin. Burial will follow in the Mountain View United Methodist Church cemetery in Meadows of Dan.
Memorial contributions may be made to Mountain View United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Richard Wood, 441 Busted Rock Rd., Meadows of Dan, Va. 24120.
