Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

WILLIAM D. PHILPOTT SR.
William David "Pott" Philpott Sr., 69, of Newport News, died August 15, 2006, at his home.
He was born in Bassett and was a son of the late Lewis Roma Philpott Sr. and E. Thelma Pauley Philpott. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Lewis Roma Philpott Jr.
He retired as a tank tester at Newport News Shipbuilding, where he worked for 29 years.
Surviving are one son, William D. Philpott Jr.; three sisters, Beatrice Roane of West Palm Beach, Fla., Jennie McCormick of Charlottesville and Hannah Reynolds of Patrick County; two granddaughters and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was be held Friday at the Foley family cemetery in Patrick County.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life.

ASHLEY L. PICKARD
Ashley Lynn Pickard, 16, of Ridgeway, died Wednesday, August 16, 2006, of injuries from an automobile accident.
She was born March 12, 1990 in Martinsville and was a daughter of Larry Pickard of Martinsville and Deborah Lynn Pickard of Ridgeway.
Surviving, in addition to her parents, are two sisters, Jessica Pickard of Horsepasture and Tiffany Pickard of Ridgeway; one brother, Brandon Massey of Ridgeway; grandparents Patricia Hammock of Martinsville, Bobby Pruitt of Patrick Springs, Ruth Westmoreland of Axton and Douglas Willard of Horsepasture; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services were held Sunday at Bassett Funeral Services chapel with Pastor Joyce Green officiating. Burial was in the Pruitt family cemetery.
Pallbearers were David Willard, Timothy Willard, Ricky Poteat, Keith Hagerman, Jimmy Higgs and George Massey.

C. LEON PLASTER
Calvin Leon Plaster, 54, of Critz, died Thursday, August 17, 2006, at his home.
He was born in Henry County on October 7, 1951 and was a son of the late Homer Austin Plaster and Lee Dillon Plaster of Stuart. He was also preceded in death by a son, David Scott Plaster, and a brother, Wayne Stephen Plaster.
He was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church and had been a third shift superintendent at United Elastic Corporation. He was a member of the first graduating class at Patrick County High School.
Plaster was a former member of the Patrick County Jaycees and he and his family received the Jaycee Family of the Year award in 1984. He had served as a coach for girls' basketball and softball teams at Hardin Reynolds Elementary School.
Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife, Brenda Lewis Plaster of the home; one daughter, Suzanne Marie Plaster of Kernersville, N.C.; one sister, Brenda Plaster Smith of Walnut Cove, N.C.; and other relatives.
Funeral services were held Saturday at Pleasant View Baptist Church with Pastor Rick Anderson officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

MARY M. PUCKETT
Mary Sue Mills Puckett, 89, of Hatchers Chapel Rd., Claudville, died Sunday, August 20, 2006, at the home of her daughter.
She was born May 15, 1917 in Patrick County to the late Walter L. and Louie Frans Mills. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Paul Truman Puckett; and two brothers, James Leftwich Mills and Joseph Clyde Mills.
She was a school teacher and taught throughout Carroll and Patrick Counties for 37 years. She attended Unity Church in Ararat.
Surviving are one daughter, Willynda "Lynda" Holder of Claudville; one sister, Ilene Mills Cooke of Mount Airy, N.C.; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.
Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday) at 2 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home chapel in Mount Airy. The Revs. Rayton Puckett and Buford Jessup will officiate. Burial will be in Skyline Memory Gardens.

JOHN A. WILLARD
John A. Willard, 83, of Newport, N.C., and formerly of Patrick County, died Tuesday, July 25, 2006, at his home.
He was born in the Elamsville area on August 11, 1922, to the late Andrew Jackson Willard and Dovie Hall Willard. He was preceded in death by two sons, John A. Willard Jr. and Donald Willard; a daughter, Linda Nettle; and a brother, James Hooker Willard.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict and retired with 20 years of service as a civil service employee with the motor pool at Cherry Point Marine Corps Air Base in North Carolina.
Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Maxine Willard of the home; one daughter, Mary Ducote of Newport; five sons, Jack Willard of San Antonio, Texas, Jim Willard of Atlantic Beach, N.C., and Ernest Willard, Willie Willard and Michael Willard, all of Newport; two sisters, Ruby Foley of Stuart and Lucy Willard of Fieldale; two brothers, Leroy Willard of Bassett and Willie Willard of Stuart; and 12 grandchildren.
Funeral services were held July 28 at Munden Funeral Home in Morehead City, N.C. Burial was in Gethsemane Memorial Park in Newport.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, 332 N. Lauderdale St., Memphis, Tenn., 38105.

HUBERT L. COCKRAM
Hubert Lee Cockram, 54, of Bassett, died Wednesday, November 8, 2006, at his home.He was born in Patrick County on February 4, 1952 and was a son of Betty June Hall Cockram of Bassett and the late Roy Chester Cockram.
He served in the U.S. Air Force in Vietnam and was a supervisor with Bassett-Walker Knitting Co. for 21 years.
Surviving, in addition to his mother, are two daughters, Hope Lee Cockram Lewis of Martinsville and her mother, Brenda Morten Cockram Brower of Martinsville, and Heather Paige Cockram of the home and her mother, Sandra Edwards Cockram of Bassett; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Linda Cockram Barbour and husband Clete and Barbara Cockram Felts, all of Bassett; a brother-in-law, Richard Felts of Patrick Springs; three brothers, Roy Herbert Cockram and wife Hilda Clark Cockram and Roy Lee Cockram and wife Ginger L. Cockram, and John Wayne Cockram, all of Bassett; two granddaughters, Hannah Marie Lewis and Hailey Shea Lewis; three nephews and three nieces.
Funeral services were held Saturday at Collins Funeral Services chapel with the Rev. Lew Bennett officiating. Burial, with military honors by the Martinsville and Henry County Veterans' Honor Guard, was in Henry Memorial Park.
Pallbearers were Russell Stone, Eddie Brown, Clay Barbour, Richard Felts, Riley Williams and Glen Foley.

JOHN COCKRAN
John Cockran, age 67 of Sterling Heights, Mich., and formerly of Patrick County, died Thursday, November 9, 2006 at St. John Macomb Hospital in Michigan. He was born on March 12, 1939 in Detroit, Mich., to the late John "Ted" Cockran and Lorna Cockran McGrath.
He was retired from General Motors, was a veteran of the U S Army, and was a member of American Legion Post 243 in Fraser, Mich.
Surviving are two sisters, Ellen Culler of Roanoke and Margaret Gorecki of Sterling Heights, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Rev. Ralph Hoke officiating. Burial was in the Cockran family cemetery.
Pallbearers were Steve Helms, Leon Pendleton, David Pendleton, Ronnie Bowling, Clarence Bowling and James Hylton.

JOE N. CORRELL
Joe Ned Correll of Quincy, Fla., and formerly of Patrick County, died Friday, November 3, 2006, at his home. He was born September 8, 1937 to Blanche Correll of Stuart and the late James Milvern Correll. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Tom Correll and Curtis Correll.
He was a retired truck driver.
Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife of 36 years, Diann Correll; four sons, Steve Correll of Bassett, and Ken, Chuck and Bruce McDowell; one daughter, Kitten Emrick of Florida; two brothers, Willard Correll of Wytheville and Ken Correll of Owensburg, Ky.; one sister, Helen Belcher of Stuart and seven grandchildren.

JESSE D. GARDNER JR.
Jesse Darrell Gardner Jr., 14, of Madison, N.C., died Saturday, November 11, 2006, from injured sustained in a car accident. He was born October 23, 1992, in Patrick County and was a son of Jesse Darrell Gardner Sr. and Tiffany Owens Gardner. He was preceded in death by his great-grandparents, Noel Woods, Beattie Woods, Jesse Owens, Lois Owens and Ninna Gardner; and stepgrandmother, Rachel Owens.
He attended Piney Grove Middle School and was a member of Westside Baptist Church.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his stepfather, James Franklin Duggins Jr.; two brothers, James Franklin Duggins III and Isiah Andrew Gardner; five sisters, Annalisa Nicole Gardner, Jennifer Rose Duggins, Amber Marie Gardner, Isabella McMillen and Kachinia Somlinsky; grandparents, Berkley Owens and Eula Owens, both of Stuart, and Oscar Gardner and Margaret Gardner, both of Axton.; and stepgrandparents, James and Pearlie Duggins.
Funeral services were held Tuesday Colonial Funeral Home Stokes Chapel in Sandy Ridge, N.C. Burial was in Patrick Memorial Gardens in Stuart.

RUTH S. HARNSBERGER
Ruth Smoot Harnsberger, 95, of Stuart, died Sunday, November 12, 2006, in Myrtle Beach, S.C. She was born in Amherst County and was a daughter of the late George and Amelia Scharr Smoot. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William L. Harnsberger; a sister, Dorothy Miller; and five brothers, Lester, Walter, Roy, Clarence, and Elmer Smoot.
She was a longtime member of Stuart United Methodist Church.
Surviving are one daughter, Ruthie C. Harnsberger of Stuart; one son, William L. Harnsberger, Jr. of Patrick Springs; two grandchildren, Sara Thompson and husband, Scott , Matt Harnsberger and wife, Christy; three great grandchildren, Nash Thompson, Kyleigh Harnsberger, Bryce Harnsberger; and one brother, Earl Smoot of Baltimore, Md.
A graveside service was held Tuesday at Stuart Cemetery with Dr. Clyde DeLoach officiating.

JAMES L. HYLTON
James Leonard (Mutt) Hylton, 73, of Meadows of Dan, died Saturday November 11, 2006 at his home. He was a local merchant for 13 years and worked as the miller at Mabry Mill for 17 years. He was a member and deacon at Green Mountain Baptist Church, and served in the U.S. Army in the Korean Conflict.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Wanda Hylton.
Surviving are three daughters, Sharon Webb, Ann Alderman, and Donna Nester, all of Meadows of Dan; one sister, Christine Nester of Meadows of Dan; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held Monday at Green Mountain Baptist Church, Meadows of Dan with Rev. Nathan Montgomery and Howard Nester officiating. Burial, with military rites by the Patrick County Veterans' Memorial Honor Guard, was in the Shelor cemetery.

EVA H. JOYCE
Eva Hodge Joyce, 93, of Ridgeway, died Monday, November 13, 2006, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville. She was born in Patrick County on January 15, 1913 to the late Bob R. and Millie Newman Hodge. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James W. Joyce; three sisters, Vera Edwards, Colleen Bullins and Avagene Vernon; three brothers, Alvis Hodge, Russell Hodges and Raymond Hodge.
She performed alterations until she retired, and was a member of Mayo Baptist Church.
Surviving are three daughters, Margaret Worley of Matthews, N.C., Becky Thomason of Houston, Tex., and Lucille Murphy of Gretna, La.; two sisters, Virgie Martin of Madison, N.C., and Irene Nance of Spencer; one brother, Calvin Hodge of Spencer; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Mayo Baptist Church by the Rev. Don Smith. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight (Wednesday) from 6 to 8 p.m. at Mayo Baptist Church and other times at the home on Moores Mill Rd., Ridgeway.
Arrangements are by Howell Funeral Home in Patrick Springs.

FRANK H. MARTIN
Frank Herrell Martin, 87, of Stella Loop, Spencer died Thursday, November 9, 2006, at Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart. He was born May 25, 1919, in Stokes County, N.C., and was a son of the late Lester P. and Revie Reid Martin.
He retired from DuPont after 40 years of service and was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a member of Red Hollow Primitive Baptist Church where he was a deacon.
Surviving are his wife, Connie V. Martin of Stuart; four daughters, Patricia Martin of Martinsville, Carolyn Penn, Geraldine Eggleston and Janet Martin, all of Spencer; one brother, Leonard Martin of Baltimore, Md.; one step-brother, James L. Claybrooks of Stoneville, N.C.; eight step-sisters, Gracie Martin, Beulah Watkins, Beatrice Claybrooks, Ruby Moore and Mary Scales, all of Stoneville, Viola Smith and Christine Penn, both of Ridgeway and Roselle Dalton of Madison, N.C.; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday at Red Hollow Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Carl Morgan officiating. Burial was in Patrick Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were Richard R. Penn, Leon Martin, Moir Edwards, Sandy Reid, Corey Hairston, Will Lassiter and Frank Johnson.

LISA F. MOORE
Lisa Dale Farmer Moore, 42, of Martinsville, died Thursday, November 9, 2006, at Indian Path Medical Center in Kingsport, Tenn.She was born in Greenville, S.C., on July 24, 1964, to Roby Jackson Moore and Frances Hunt Moore, both of Martinsville.
She attended New Beginnings Baptist Church.
Surviving, in addition to her parents, are her husband, William Joe Moore of the home; two sons, Josh Ryan Lopp of Patrick Springs and James Andrew Lopp of Martinsville; one sister, Sharon K. Brown of Montana; one brother, Roby John Farmer of Richmond; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Community Funeral Services chapel with Pastor Raymond Stegall officiating. Burial will be at Mountain View Cemetery at Ridgeway.
The family will receive friends at Community Funeral Services from 1 until 2 p.m. today.

HARVEY R. PALMER SR.
Harvey R. Palmer Sr., 74, of Martinsville, died Thursday, November 9, 2006. He was born in Patrick County on January 31, 1932, to the late Junious and Lula Jane Fodrell Palmer. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Gladys Spencer; a sister, Elnora V. Black; and a brother, Henry Clay Palmer.
He retired from Fieldcrest Mills with 40 years of service and drove a school bus for the Henry County School System during that time. He had been a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church for 30 years, where he was superintendent of Sunday school, served as vice president of the usher board for 23 years, was on the trustee board, church treasurer and was a member of the men's club and the men's choir.
Surviving are his wife, Ida Redd Palmer of the home; six daughters, Debra L. Palmer, Iris M. Warren, Joanna J. Epps, Nellie J. Hughes and Dorothy Strickland, all of Martinsville, and Janice D. Florence of Axton ; three sons, Harvey R. Palmer Jr. of Greensboro, N.C., Robert E. Johnson of Martinsville and Henry C. Johnson of Lumberton, N.C.; a sister, Lula Mae Carter of Patrick Springs; a brother, Hardin Palmer of Pittsburgh, Pa.; 25 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at Hairston Funeral Home chapel with Dr. J. Roland Cohen officiating. Burial was in Carver Memorial Gardens.
Arrangements were by Hairston Funeral Home.

DEONNA H. PILSON
Deonna Huddle Pilson, 95, of Ridgeway, died Wednesday, November 8, 2006, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville. She was born in Wythe County on November. 14, 1910 to the late John Lewis Huddle and Ollie Tilson Huddle. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ophus Eugene "O.E." Pilson; a brother, Harmon T. Huddle; and a sister, Jessie Lorena Huddle.
She received a teaching degree from Radford University and taught in the Wythe County, Tazewell County and Patrick County School systems, and later at Axton and Ridgeway elementary schools. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association.
She was an active member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Church Women, and other organizations including the Ridgeway Garden Club, Ridgeway Extension Homemakers, Ridgeway Ruritan Club and Ridgeway Senior Citizens and was a Girl Scout leader.
She did volunteer work with the blind and the American Red Cross. She also was a member of the Hottel-Keller Memorial Association and the Allied Families of Patrick County.
Surviving are one daughter, Ollie Jane Pilson of the home; one brother, Lewis A. Huddle of Chesapeake; and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Martinsville by the Revs. Lynn Bechdolt and Paul Huddle. Burial was in Mountain View Cemetery in Ridgeway.
Pallbearers were Eddie Levi, Charles Speakman, Ronny Pilson, Curt Pilson, Chris Pilson and Bill Pilson.
Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 1527 East Church St. Ext., Martinsville, Va. 24112.
Arrangements were by Roselawn Chapel Funeral Home.
