Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

BRENDA V. PERKINS
Belinda Kaye Vaughn Perkins, 44, of Ridgeway, died January 30, 2009, at her home.
She was born in Patrick County on December 23, 1964 and was a daughter of Robert Vaughn of Martinsville and Patricia T. Vaughn of Patrick County.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Mary Alice and John Vaughn, Dorothy Scales and John Turner.
She had worked at Sara Lee Knitwear for 21 years. She was a member of Apha Faith Temple, where she served on the usher board and the kitchen committee.
Surviving, in addition to her parents, are one daughter, Cassandra Perkins of Ridgeway; two brothers, Tony Vaughn of Christiansburg and Robert Vaughn of Ridgeway; and one sister, Angela Vaughn of Atlanta, Ga.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Morning Star Holy Church by Bishop Waverly Cousins. Burial will be in the Only Way Church of Christ cemetery in Elamsville in Patrick County.
The family will receive friends at the church for one hour before the funeral and other times at the home.

JAMES H. ROOP
James Hylton Roop, 63, of Fairystone Park Hwy., Bassett, died Tuesday, January 27, 2009 at his residence.
He was born in Patrick County on March 12, 1945 and was a son of the late Howard Roop and Corrine Cummings Roop. He was also preceded in death by a sister; Vivian Rutledge, and a brother, Steve Roop.
He worked as a truck driver for several years with L.E. Hutchens Co. and Noland Co.
Surviving are his wife, Patsy Wells Roop of Bassett; two daughters, Kelly Roop of Collinsville and Kim R. Walker of Bassett; one son, Stephen Roop of Martinsville; two brothers, Tommy Roop of Bassett and Archie Roop of Patrick Springs; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday in the chapel of Community Funeral Home of Stuart with the Rev. Freddie Bonds officiating. Burial was in the Roop-Ferris family cemetery Bassett.
Pallbearers were Albert Turner, J.W. Turner, Randy Turner, Randy Janey, Matthew Kendrick and Roger Lovins.

CAROL T. SHEPPARD
Carol Tolbert Sheppard, 69, of Stuart, died Sunday, February 1, 2009, at her home.
She was born in Stoneville, N.C., on April 19, 1939 and was a daughter of the late Jack and Elizabeth Ann Goode Tolbert. She was also preceded in death by a husband, William Charles Booker Jr.; and a brother, Ronnie Tolbert.
She was a member of High Point Baptist Church and was retired from DuPont.
Surviving are her husband, Joel H. Sheppard of the home; two sons, Terry Booker of Georgia and William Charles "Chip" Booker III of Stuart; one daughter and son-in-law, Robin and husband Terry Amos of Stuart, five grandchildren, Alexandra Booker, Kristy Amos, Eli Amos, Ariel Booker, and Hunter Booker; and a brother and sister-in-law, Anthony "Tony" and wife Shirley Tolbert of Eden, N.C.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Pastors Wayne Moore and Dwight Prillaman officiating. Burial will be private.
Memorial contributions may be made to the High Point Baptist Church Youth, c/o Terri Combs, 1100 American Legion Rd., Stuart, VA 24171.

VIRGINIA C. STEVENS
Virginia Elizabeth "Lizzie" Chandler Stevens, 83, of Mount Airy, N.C., died Wednesday, January 28, 2009, at her home.
She was born December 3, 1925 in Guilford County, N.C., and was a daughter of the late Arthur and Edna Hunter Chandler. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Ray Stevens; a stepson, Herbert Lee Stevens; a great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Lawson; two sisters; and four brothers.
She was a homemaker and a member of Lighthouse Community Church.
Surviving are four daughters, Betty Lawson of Ararat, Linda Pack and Michelle Hall, both of Mount Airy, and Nancy Pack of Galax; two sons, Glenn Ray Stevens and Robert Stevens, both of Ararat; 11 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday at Lighthouse Community Church, with the Revs. Johnny Easter, Tommy Vass, and Sammy Lawson officiating. Burial was in the Willis Gap Baptist Church cemetery.

GLADYS R. AKERS
Gladys Rhodes "Mimi" Akers, 99, of Stuart, died Wednesday, March 4, 2009, at the Landmark Center in Stuart.
She was born in Patrick County on December 23, 1909 and was a daughter of the late Richard J. Rhodes and Rosa Lee Martin Rhodes. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Murray Akers; four sisters, Hattie Tuck, Lucy Flippin, Carrie Palmer and Sallie Floyd; and six brothers, Robert Rhodes, Ernest Rhodes, Roy Rhodes, Perry Rhodes, Emmett Rhodes and Charles Rhodes.
She had been a member of Stuart Baptist Church for over 60 years.
Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Mary Alice and Richard Braverman of Rochester, N.Y.; one son and daughter-in-law, Cecil Murray Jr. and Lourdes Akers of Stuart; six grandchildren, Kristi A. Kadlubowski and husband Michael, Courtney Akers, Lisa B. Yarbrough, and husband Scott, Jill N. Braverman and husband Jorge Peres-Albela, Charlotte A. Berry and husband Neil, and Arthur A. Anthony IV; six great-grandchildren, Oscar M. Yarbrough, Quentin Rhodes Yarbrough, Shawn Kadlubowski, Aaron Kadlubowski, Isabela Berry and Joshua Berry, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Sunday at Stuart Baptist Church with the Revs. Robert Belcher, Clint Hopkins and Jim Churchwell officiating. Burial was in the Sycamore Baptist Church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Jorge Perez-Albela, Scott Yarbrough, Norris Woody, Art Anthony IV, Richard A. Flippin and R. Jay Flippin.

Arrangements were by Moody Funeral Home in Stuart.

WINIFRED E. BATEMAN
Winifred Edith Bateman, 90, of Stuart, died Sunday, March 8, 2009, at the Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart.
She was born in Norfolk on June 10, 1918 and was a daughter of the late Edgar and Maggie Heath Burge. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Claude Bateman; a son, Donald Bateman; a son-in-law, Raymond Shelton; and a daughter-in-law, Ann Bateman.
She was a member of Hills Grove Baptist Church, and had retired from United Elastic Corporation.
Surviving are two daughters, Judy Shelton and Peggy Francis, both of Stuart; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with the Revs. Jim Churchwell and Reggie Steele officiating. Burial will follow in Hills Grove Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight (Wednesday) from 6 to 8 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart.

GEORGE N. CANADAY
George Navy Canaday, 84, of Martinsville, died Sunday, March 8, 2009, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville.
Born on June 17, 1924 in Patrick County, he was a son of the late John Will Canaday and Molly Bell Spencer Canaday.
He was a production worker for General Motors in Cleveland. Oh. He was of the Baptist faith and was a member of the United Auto Workers.
Surviving are three daughters, Brenda Harris of Columbia, S.C., Debbie Newcomb of Lexington, S.C., and Anita Kreghbaum of Elgin, S.C.; three sons, George W. Canaday of Los Angles, Calif., Johnny Canaday of Blythewood, S.C., and Mike Canaday, of Elgin; two sisters, Vera Walkins of Eden, N.C., and Avie Jean White of Salem; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was held Tuesday at Mountain View Cemetery in Ridgeway.

MARY E. DAY
Mary Ellen Day, 80, of Kenbridge, died Sunday, March 8, 2009, at Community Memorial Healthcenter.
She was born May 12, 1928, in Matheny, W.Va.
She was a life-long member of the United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.
Surviving are her husband of 63 years, the Rev. Robert J. Day Sr.; three sons, the Rev. Michael G. Day of Kenbridge, Robert J. Day Jr. of Stuart and Lacy F. Day of Callands; one sister, Lucille Pendry of Princeton, W.Va.; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at La Crosse United Methodist Church with her son, the Rev. Michael G. Day, officiating. Burial was in Antioch United Methodist Church cemetery in Lunenburg County.
Memorial contributions may be made to La Crosse United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 279, La Crosse, Va. 23950.
Arrangements were by Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home and Crematory in South Hill.

HARVEY W. FAIN
Harvey Wayne Fain, 51, of Ararat, died Monday, March 9, 2009, at his home.
He was born April 9, 1957, in Patrick County and was a son of the late John Leonard and Myrtle Sarah Edwards Fain. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Della Cook and Doris Nunn.
Surviving are his wife, Jackie Young Fain of the home; one daughter, Sarah Jessica Casstevens of Ararat; sons, John Leonard Fain Stevens, of the home, and James "Shorty" Fain of Ararat; two grandchildren; sisters, Dorothy Fain of Stuart, Delphia Wall of Dobson, N.C., Ruby Sheppard of Westfield, N.C., Judy Bowman of Meadows of Dan, Brenda Wilkey of Mt. Airy, N.C., and Linda Hill of Cana; and brothers, Arlice Fain and Albert Fain, both of Stuart, Bruce Fain and William Fain, both of Martinsville, Burton Fain, Carl Fain and Harold Fain, all of Stuart.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Moody Funeral Home chapel in Mount Airy by the Rev. Rickey Rogers. Burial will follow in the Henry Young family cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight (Wednesday) from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, N.C. 27030.

LILLIE M. HEATH
Lillie Mae Heath, 87, of Stuart, died Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.
She was born in Powhatan County on June 18, 1921 and was a daughter of the late Robert and Nina DeHart Willard. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Heath; an infant son, an infant daughter; and her stepfather, Clarence Ayers.
She was a member of Mayo Mountain Church.
Surviving are two daughters and a son-in-law, Sue and Fred Hill and Shirley Rakes, all of Stuart; one son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Sandra Heath of Stuart; six grandchildren, Amanda Collins, Michelle Umbrell, Susette Simmons, Kelly Hauser, Zachary Heath and Hunter Heath; five great-grandchildren, Brittany Gilley, Taylor Hauser, Tillee Hauser, Morgan Collins and Hayden Umbrell; one sister, Myrtle Harden of High Point, N.C.; one stepsister, Clara Inman of Stuart; and one stepbrother, Bob Ayers of Florida.
Funeral services were held Friday at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with the Rev. David Heath officiating. Burial was in Red Bank Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Gary Heath, Ben Merritt, Thomas Collins, Robert Ayers, Rusty Umbrell and Clyde Stevens.

ROBERT C. HODGE
Robert Calvin Hodge, 83, of George Taylor Road, Spencer, died Saturday, March 7, 2009, at Morehead Nursing Center in Eden, N.C.
He was born March 24, 1925 in Henry County and was a son of the late Bob Reid Hodge and Millie Newman Hodge. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Russell Hodge, Raymond Hodge and Alvis Hodge; and six sisters, Avagene Vernon, Colleen Bullins, Vera Edwards, Eva Joyce, Irene Nance and Vergie Martin.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a self-employed painter for more than 30 years. He was a member of Mayo Christian Church.
Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Mary Joyce Hodge of the home, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at Mayo Christian Church with Minister Curt Ashley officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Arrangements were by Community Funeral Home in Stuart.

AUDREY H. HODGES
Audrey Hall Hodges, 79, of Stuart, died Wednesday, March 4, 2009, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville.
She was born in Patrick County on November 7, 1929 and was a daughter of the late Dennis H. and Gladys H. Hall. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Richard Hodges Sr.; a son, Richard Hodges Jr.; and a brother, Clyde Hall.
She was of the Primitive Baptist faith, and had retired from Bassett-Walker Knitting Company in Stuart.
Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Danny Powell of Martinsville; one son and daughter-in-law, Barry and Dana Hodges of Collinsville; four grandchildren, Amy Tilley and husband Kim, Christy Morrison, Chris Hodges and Jennifer Hodges; one great-grandchild, Anna Elizabeth Tilley; three sisters, Elva Thomas, Annie Belle Dalton and Nancy Midkiff, all of Stuart; and three brothers, Garnett Hall of Hillsville, Ralph Hall of Stuart and Bobby Hall of Collinsville.
Funeral services were held Saturday at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with the Rev. Jim Churchwell officiating. Burial was in Patrick Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were David Midkiff, Rodney East, Timmy Fain, Kevin Fain, Kim Tilley and Vann Thomas.

INEZ T. JEFFERSON
Inez Tilley Jefferson, 95, of Hatchers Chapel Road, Claudville, died Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart.
She was born January 17, 1914 in Patrick County and was a daughter of the late Jiles Elliot and Betty Slate Tilley. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Walter Jefferson; two sisters, Laura Jessup and Lillian Martin; and three brothers, Clinard Tilley, Ted Tilley, and the Rev. Jiles Tilley.
She retired from Spencer's Inc. and was a member of Mountain View Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Alease and Golden Epperson of Claudville; two sons and daughters-in-law, James Elliot and Doris Jefferson of Bassett and Roger Stuart and Joanne Jefferson of Sebring, Fla.; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Zora Ward of Claudville and Nettie Hooker of Mount Airy, N.C.
Funeral services were held Thursday at Mountain View Pentecostal Holiness Church, with the Revs. Tommy Smith and Harold Cox officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

RAVIS R. KEENE
Ravis Ray Keene, 41, of Stuart, died Saturday, March 7, 2009, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
He was born December 31, 1967 in Henry County and was a son of Curtis Ray Keene of Woolwine and Dora Wagoner Keene of Stuart. He was preceded in death by an infant brother, Davis Blaine Keene.
He was a member of True Gospel Holiness Church. He worked for Better Building Supply and part-time at SunTrust Bank.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his wife, Judy Reynolds Keene of Stuart; one daughter, Kristen Keene of Ararat; one brother, Kenneth Keene of Reidsville, N.C.; one niece and one nephew.
Funeral services were held Monday at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with the Revs. Gary Combs, Wayne Moore and Willie Reynolds officiating. Burial was in Patrick Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were Foy Fulcher, Bobby Wagoner, Raymond Wagoner, Scott Wagoner, Chris Wagoner, Fred Weber, Kenneth Keene, Donald Elgin, Donald Brockway and David Copeland.
