Thomas A. Toombs

Thomas A. 'Jack' Toombs, 79, of Fort Mitchell, widower of Clara L. Toombs, died July 9, 2003.

Mr. Toombs was retired vice-president of Love & Associates, and a WWII Army Veteran.

He is survived by three daughters, Patsy Toombs of Red Oak, Lori LaPradd and husband, Michael, of Drakes Branch, and Karren DeJarnette and husband, Pearson, of Cullen; a son, Tommy Toombs and wife, Shannon, of Drakes Branch; five sisters, Edith Warren of Colonial Heights, Madelene Spain of Skipwith, Agnes Brankley of Richmond, Charlotte Reese and Evelyn Ellington, both of Chase City; a brother, Ernest Toombs Jr. of Red Oak; seven grandchildren; and a devoted friend, Janet Rogers of Halifax. Mr. Toombs was preceded in death by a daughter, Jacqueline Raye Toombs.

Funeral services for Mr. Toombs was held July 12 at 3 p.m. at Public Fork Christian Church with Denis Fritz officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

William Davis Toot

William Davis Toot, 89, of Philadelphia, Pa., formerly of Halifax County, died June 26, 2003.

Mr. Toot was born in Halifax County on July 20, 1913. He was a member of Five Forks Baptist Church. Upon moving to Pa. he joined the Canaan Baptist Church where he served on the Board of Deacons, Senior Usher Board, and was a Sheep Fold leader.

Survivors include two sons; three sisters; one brother; one daughter-in-law; numerous stepchildren and step-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mr. Toot were held June 30 at 10 a.m. at Canaan Baptist Church.

Thelma Harris Tuck

Thelma Harris Tuck, 81, of Roxboro, N.C. died October 5, 2003 at Person Memorial Hospital in Roxboro.

Born in Person County, N.C., she was the daughter of the late John William and Lucy Bowes Harris and wife of the late David Geter Tuck. Mrs. Tuck retired from Collins & Aikman Corp. and was a member of Friendship Freewill Baptist Church.

Survivors include two children, Margaret T. Harris and Roger Tuck, both of Roxboro; three sisters, Jenny Rhodes of Burgaw, N.C., Betty Fox of Roanoke Rapids, N.C. and Irene Robertson of Roxboro; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. October 7 at Brooks & White Chapel in Roxboro by the Revs. Joe Hailey and Gerald Hodges. Burial followed in Providence Cemetery.

Willard Rudolph Tuck

Willard Rudolph Tuck, 76, of Clover, died Saturday, January 3, 2003, at Halifax Regional Hospital.

He was born in Bedford County on July 29, 1927 the son of Albert Tuck and Maggie Neal Tuck and was married to Elizabeth Noblin Tuck.

Mr. Tuck was a member of Mt. Laurel United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, five brothers, Kyle Tuck of Baltimore, Md., Guy Tuck of Altavista, Calvin Tuck and Lawson Tuck, both of Gretna, and Fred Tuck of Bedford, six sisters, Lenora Meadow of Altavista, Lois Kendrick of Bedford, Pearl Ashwell of Roanoke, Lula Todd of Baltimore, Md., and Doris Shelton and Naomi Howell, both of Huddleston, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held today, January 5, at 2 p.m. at Mt. Laurel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Don Pizzeck and the Rev. David Adkin conducting the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Rev. Charlie Tucker

Rev. Charlie Tucker, 84, of 1046 Jones Store Lane, Halifax died November 6, 2003 at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Rev. Tucker was born in Halifax County on February 19, 1919, the son of Doshe Tucker and was married to Ida Mae Womack Tucker. He was a member of New Zion Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Freddie Tucker; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Willie Tucker, two sisters-in-law, Lillie Mae Tucker and Theola Womack; a friend, Roberta Younger-Carden.

Funeral services for Rev. Tucker will be held today, November 10 at 2 p.m. at New Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Willie N. Yancey officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Daniel Moseley Tucker

Daniel Moseley Tucker of Chase City died in Halifax Regional Hospital on December 17, 2003.

Mr. Tucker was born on December 18, 1923, the son of Grattan Howard Tucker and Carolyn Moseley Tucker.

For many years Mr. Tucker was editor of The Chase City Progress, writing a weekly column, "In the Lion's Den with Daniel" which became "The Lion's Den." He later became co-owner of the Middleton Press. A graduate of Virginia Military Institute, Mr. Tucker served in the 69th Division of the Armed Forces in World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart in Germany following the Battle of the Bulge. He also served on the Board of the Chase City Medical Clinic, was a former trustee of the Prestwould Foundation and was active in many civic organizations.

Mr. Tucker was treasurer for St. John's Episcopal Church, a member of the Sons of the Revolution and the Commonwealth Club.

Survivors include his wife, Rose Wallace Tucker; one niece, Betsy Tucker Thorpe of Tallahassee, Fla.; a nephew, Gratton Howard Tucker III of Roanoke; and two great nieces and one great nephew. He was preceded in death by a brother, Dr. Grattan Howard Tucker.

A memorial service for Mr. Tucker, conducted by the Rev. Doug Geddes, will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church Monday, December 22 at 11 a.m.

Those wishing to give memorials are asked to consider St. John's Memorial Garden Fund, 338, Fourth Street, Chase City, 23924.

The family will receive friends at the home on Sunday, December 21 from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Crystal Renay Tune

Crystal Renay Tune, 20, of Nathalie died July 15, 2003.

She is survived by her mother and father, Bridget Tune and Calvin Barbour; one sister, Calisa Barbour; her grandmother, Margaret Barbour, all of Nathalie; three godsisters, Teresa Bailey, Denise Boyd and Terry Barbour.

Funeral services will be held tomorrow, July 19 at 11 a.m. at Republican Grove Baptist Church in Nathalie with burial in Millstone Baptist Church Cemetery.

Charlie Hoover Vaughan

Charlie Hoover Vaughan, 74, of 1192 Murphy Grove Road, Halifax died November 28, 2003 at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Mr. Vaughan was born in Halifax on March 4, 1929, the son of Robert Junior Vaughan and Susie Moore Vaughan and was married to Virginia Moore Vaughan. He was a member of McKendree United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Nancy Matthews and husband, Harry, of Bullock, N.C., Betty Anderson and husband, Ricky, of Nathalie, and Tammie Loftis and husband, Donnie, of Halifax; three sons, Larry Vaughan and wife, Patricia, Wayne Vaughan, and Sammy Vaughan and friend, Betty Ann, all of Halifax; five granddaughters; four grandsons; and three brothers, Cecil Vaughan of South Boston, Elmer Vaughan and Bobby Vaughan, both of Halifax.

Mr. Vaughan was preceded in death by one sister, Doris V. Garber; and three brothers, Shirley Vaughan, James T. Vaughan and Junior Vaughan.

A funeral service was held November 30 at 2 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Bob Watts and Jack Gowen officiating. Burial followed in McKendree United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Frances LaPradd Vaughan

Frances LaPradd Vaughan, 61, of 3098 J.D. Hagood Highway, Halifax died July 14, 2003 at her home.

Mrs. Vaughan was born in Charlotte County on July 31, 1941, the daughter of James LaPradd and Mattie LaPradd and was married to Phillip Marshall Vaughan. She was a member of Seven Oaks Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband; one daughter, Kimberly Davis and husband, Jerry, of Scottsburg; one stepdaughter, Janet Michelle Ward and husband, Roy, of Snow Camp, N.C.; one brother, John Henry LaPradd of Drakes Branch; two sisters-in-law, Nancy LaPradd of Chase City and Linda LaPradd of Drakes Branch; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, James LaPradd.

Funeral services for Mrs. Vaughan will be held tomorrow, July 17 at 2 p.m. at Seven Oaks Baptist Church with the Rev. Raymond Bucklew officiating. Burial will take place in Halifax Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends this evening, July 16 from 7:00 until 8:30 at Powell Funeral Home, and other times at the home of her daughter, 1030 Green Level Road, Scottsburg.

Grady Franklin Vaughan

Grady Franklin Vaughan, 90, of Clarksville, widower of Reba Rollison Vaughan, died September 28, 2003.

He was a retired employee of J.P. Stevens.

Survivors of Mr. Vaughan include one daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Bud Didyoung of Holden Beach, N.C.; one son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Pat Vaughan of Clarksville; daughter/granddaughter, Deborah Roberts of Richmond; one sister, Virginia Hess of Abbeville, S.C.; three other grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Vaughan was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

James Otha 'Jimmy' Vaughan Jr.

James Otha 'Jimmy' Vaughan Jr., 60, of 1018 Elm Court, South Boston died December 16, 2003 in Halifax Regional Hospital.

Mr. Vaughan was born in Halifax County on January 25, 1943. He was owner-operator of Vaughan's Antiques, attended Grace Baptist Church and was a member of the National Rifle Association.

Graveside services will be held today, December 19 at 2 p.m. in Halifax Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Jack Stewart will officiate.

Survivors of Mr. Vaughan include his mother, Frances Lowery Scott, of Hopewell; two sons, Michael Blake Vaughan of South Boston and Casey C. Vaughan of Halifax; one daughter, Gina Vaughan Faragher of South Boston; three brothers, Gerald Vaughan and wife, Linda, of Columbus, Ohio, Ronald T. Vaughan and wife, Lynda, and Donald E. Vaughan and wife, Wanda, all of Hopewell; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, James Otha Vaughan Sr.

Page Haskins Vaughan

Page Haskins Vaughan, 72, of 3419 W. Grace Street, Richmond died August 13, 2003 at Saint Mary's Hospital.

Mr. Vaughan was born in South Boston on April 21, 1931, the son of Page Haskins Vaughan Sr. and Mary Booth Vaughan and was married to Kay Boyles Vaughan. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church where he was on the Vestry. He worked with the United Way, was chairman of the South Boston Red Cross, president of the South Boston Jaycees, member of the American Legion and worked with the Boy Scouts. Mr. Vaughan was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict, attended Hampden Sydney College and was retired from Rochester Button Company in South Boston.

Survivors include one son, Page H. Vaughan III and wife, Jane M., of Statesboro, Ga.; one daughter, Mary Jo O'Hallahan and husband, Don, of Richmond; two grandchildren, Elizabeth Vaughan and Christopher Vaughan of Statesboro; one sister and brother-in-law, Betty Rogers and Chandler Nelson of South Boston.

Graveside services for Mr. Vaughan will be held tomorrow, August 16 at Oak Ridge Cemetery with Military Rites at 11:30 a.m. The Rev. Andy Bawtree will officiate.

The family will receive friends at Powell Funeral Home this evening from 7:00 until 8:30.

Essie Martin Wade

Essie Martin Wade, 92, of L.P. Bailey Memorial Highway, Nathalie died January 8, 2003 at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Mrs. Wade was born in Halifax County on July 31, 1911, the daughter of Felix D. Martin and Mary Powell Martin and was married to Earlie Thomas Wade Sr.

Mrs. Wade was a member of First Baptist Church of Millstone and was employed many years by the Halifax County Public School System.

Survivors include two sons, Earlie T. Wade Jr. and wife, Lorene, of Halifax, and Howard F. Wade and wife, Algie, of Nathalie; one daughter, Emily W. Roark and husband, Buddy, of Martinsville; one sister, Hallie M. Puckett of Nathalie; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A funeral service for Mrs. Wade will be held tomorrow, January 10 at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Millstone with the Revs. Bob Watts and Donnie Stevens officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends this evening from 7:00 until 8:30 at Powell Funeral Home and other times at the home of her sons, 3067 L.P. Bailey Memorial Hwy, and 14220 L.P. Bailey Memorial Hwy.

John A. Wade Jr.

John A. Wade Jr., 92, of 1064 Story's Creek Road, Alton died December 16, 2003 in Berry Hill Nursing Home.

Mr. Wade was born in Halifax County on October 12, 1911, the son of John A. Wade Sr. and Lucy Belle Anderson Wade and was first married to Martha Van Wade then to Lorene M. Wade. He was a member of First Cross Roads Baptist Church.

Mr. Wade was a tobacco and cantaloupe farmer, and a former board member of Farm Credit of The Virginias ACA. The first Virginia Cantaloupe Festival was held on his farm in 1980.

Survivors include three daughters, Barbara W. Ellerbee and husband, Terry, of Hampton, Lucy W. Solomon and husband, James, of Turbeville, and Van W. Granger and husband, Linwood, of South Boston; one son, John A. Wade III of Richmond, Ky.; two stepdaughters, Elizabeth McGavock of Danville and Margaret M. Kidd of Fincastle; four grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

A graveside service for Mr. Wade will be held today, December 19 at 11 a.m. at First Cross Roads Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Dan Ward officiating.

Those wishing to give memorials are asked to consider First Cross Roads Baptist Church or Turbeville Volunteer Fire Department.

Brad Antonio Walker Jr.

Infant Brad Antonio Walker Jr. of 1706 North Main St., South Boston died August 15, 2003 at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. He was born in Richmond on August 15 to Brad Antonio Walker Sr. and Latasha Waller.

His survivors include his parents; maternal grandmother, Caroline Waller of Nathalie and paternal grandmother, Shirley Jennings of South Boston.
A graveside service will be held today, August 20 at 11 a.m. at the New Mt. Olive Holiness Church cemetery with Pastor Leonia Palmer officiating.

Naomi Jean Waller

Naomi Jean Waller, 44, of Swinging Bridge Road, Brookneal, died Friday, August 22, 2003, at her home.

Ms. Waller was born in South Boston on January 6, 1959, the daughter of Nancy Waller Kress of Brookneal.

She was of the Baptist faith and a former employee of the Goodwill Store in Altavista.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by one son, Christian Lee Waller of Rustburg; one daughter, Nancy Catherine Waller of Naruna; one brother, Sidney Earl Waller of Appomattox; five sisters, Debra Brizendine of Halifax, Martha Harrison of Lynchburg, Rayleen Harris of Brookneal, Penny Hammock of Brookneal and LaVerne King of South Boston; and two grandchildren.

A funeral service will for Naomi Jean Waller will be held today at 2 p.m., at Henderson Funeral Home Chapel, Brookneal, with the Rev. Larry Martin conducting the service.

Interment will be in the Wickliffe Cemetery.

Bernice Cridlin Ward

Funeral services were held Saturday at the Kerns Memorial United Methodist Church for Mrs. Bernice Cridlin Ward, of Sutherlin.

The Rev. Joe Bradford officiated.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Ward, of Elmwood Trail, died Thursday, July 3, 2003, at her home.
She was 90.

Mrs. Ward was born on August 29, 1912 in Richmond, to the late Morris Stanley Cridlin and Virginia McDowell Cridlin.

She was married to the late Ralph Carlton Ward.

Mrs. Ward was a veteran of WWII and served in the United States Nurses Corps.

She is survived by two sons, Ralph Carlton Ward Jr., of Jacksonville, Alabama, and Ellwood Cridlin Ward of Sutherlin, one daughter, Ellen Deborah Ward Heritage of Woodbridge, Va., one brother, Leslie Wayne Cridlin of Florida, three sisters, Ina Louise Strickel of Sandston, Va., May Fought of Richmond and Margaret Warren of Highland Springs, and seven grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Kerns Memorial United Methodist Church or to the Halifax Regional Hospice, 2204 Wilborn Ave., South Boston, Va., 24592.
