John Walter Coleman

John Walter Coleman, 82, of 3037 Logan Road, Java died June 30, 2004 at his home.

Mr. Coleman was born in Halifax County on October 9, 1921, the son of the late Charlie H. Coleman and the late Betty Alice Logan Coleman, and was married to Deanna Moore Coleman. He was a member of Elkhorn Baptist Church and VFW Post 99, and was a World War II Veteran.

His survivors include his wife; one step-grandson, Rodney Ross; two sisters, Alice Minor of Java and Leola Coleman of Philadelphia, Pa.

Funeral services for Mr. Coleman will be at 2 p.m. July 4 at Elkhorn Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. C. Lewis Motley officiating. Burial will follow in the Coleman Family Cemetery with Military rites by VFW Post 99.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, and other times at the home.

Rosa Dunaway Haley

Rosa Dunaway Haley, 93, of 1319 Wilkerson Street, South Boston died June 30, 2004 at her home.

Mrs. Haley was born November 7, 1910, in Halifax County the daughter of the late James Peter Dunaway and the late Lillie Lacks Dunaway and was married to the late Jeffrey Jordan Haley.

Survivors include five daughters, Estelle Miller and her husband, Pete, of Hamilton, Ohio, Margaret Harris and Melba York and her husband, A.P., all of Virginia Beach, Shirley Lee of Norfolk and Nancy Crews of South Boston; three sons, Hugh Haley and his wife, Dot, and Danny Kaye Haley, all of Alton, and Bill Haley and his wife, Gayle, of South Boston; one sister, Mary Bentley of Phenix; 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a special family friend, Carolyn Talley of Clarksville.

Mrs. Haley was also preceded in death by a daughter, Frances Dare Haley.
Graveside services will be held tomorrow, July 3 at 11 a.m. at Oak Ridge Cemetery. The Revs. John Eure and Dennis Ball will officiate.

The family will receive friends this evening, July 2, from 7:00 until 8:30 at Brooks Funeral Home, and other times at the home.

Rubbie Williams Faulkner Hudson

Rubbie Williams Faulkner Hudson, 86, of Newark, N.J. died June 26, 2004.

Mrs. Hudson was born in Halifax County on September 26, 1927, the daughter of the late Robert Williams and Mary Stanfield Williams and was married to Willie M. Hudson. She was a member of Jeters Chapel Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband; three sisters, Marie W. Wilkins of South Boston, Lucy W. Norwood of Virgilina and Carolyn W. Buster of Alexandria; three brothers, Marlyn C. Williams of Virgilina, Landron C. Williams of South Boston and Durbert N. Williams of White Hall, Pa.; two sisters-in-law, Katie T. Williams and Mary O. Williams, both of Virgilina; two brothers-in-law, Melvin Hudson of New York and Malchi Buster of Alexandria; one grandson and one great-granddaughter.

Funeral services for Mrs. Hudson will be held tomorrow, July 3 at noon at Jeters Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. James L. Carrington officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family is receiving friends at the home of Lucy W. Norwood, 8113 Bill Tuck Highway, Virgilina.

Sarah Gladys Coles Jones

Sarah Gladys Coles Jones, 82, of Alexandria died June 28, 2004 in Alexandria.

Mrs. Jones was born in Halifax County on June 30, 1921, the daughter of the late James Callie Coles and Julia Bouldin Coles, and was married to the late Henry Lee Jones. She was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Juanita Williams of Fairfax; her son-in-law, Rudolph Williams; one sister, Alberta Carden of Piscataway, N.J.; three grandchildren, Kimbly Williams of Lorton, Carl Sydnor and his wife, LaVett, of Woodbridge, and Regby Williams of Alexandria; one great-granddaughter; and one stepson, Michael Jones of Alexandria.

Funeral services for Mrs. Jones will be held tomorrow, July 3 at 2 p.m. at Bethlehem Baptist Church with burial in the family cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the church tomorrow.

Paula Renea Newton

Paula Renea Newton, 41, of Disputanta, formerly of South Boston, died June 28, 2004 at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Ms. Newton was born in Halifax County on February 13, 1963, the daughter of Murial King and the late Matthew Newton. She was a member of Greater Mayfield Apostolic Holiness Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Nacole Newton of Richmond and Donise Newton of South Boston; one son, Shamonta Newton of South Boston; her mother of Petersburg; four sisters, Janet Bagby of Richmond, Beverly King and Sharon Jordan, both of Petersburg, and Sandra Newton of South Boston; two brothers, Matthew Newton of Disputanta and Leon Jordan Jr. of Petersburg; other relatives and friends including JoAnn Traynham.

Funeral services for Ms. Newton will be held today, July 2 at 2 p.m. at Greater Mayfield Apostolic Holiness Church with Elder Bernard Wilkins officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Garden Cemetery.

The family is receiving friends at the home of Sandra Newton, 491 Traver Avenue, South Boston.

Robert Clinton Irby

Robert Clinton Irby of Rougemont, N.C., formerly of South Boston, died Saturday, July 2, 2004.

He was born in South Boston on September 15, 1947, the son of Katheryn A. Irby and the late Robert E. Irby.

Mr. Irby graduated from Ferrum College and Virginia Tech, doing graduate work at the University of Virginia and Longwood College.

He taught in the Virginia public school system and was an instructor in the North Carolina community college system.

Mr. Irby was a former employee of GTE/Verizon and American General/AIG Insurance Companies.

Mr. Irby is survived by his mother, three children, Jennifer Carol Irby and husband Chad of Winston-Salem, N.C., Robert Spencer Irby of Rougemont, N.C., and Aaron Joseph Irby of Mount Holly, N.C., one sister, Dale Glasscock of South Boston, and one brother, David Byron Irby of South Boston.

Andrew James Atkins

Andrew James 'Jimmy' Atkins, 65, of 1065 Adams Trail, Vernon Hill, died July 4, 2004 at Lynchburg General Hospital.

Mr. Atkins was born February 27, 1939, in Pittsylvania County the son of Andrew Johnson Atkins and Virginia McDowell Atkins. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Millstone, and a member of Halifax Masonic Lodge #96.

Survivors include one daughter, Nancy atkins Lacks and her husband, James E. Lacks Jr., of Halifax; one granddaughter, Crystal Lacks of Halifax; one grandson, Justin Lacks of Halifax; three sisters, Emily Atkins Ray of South Boston, Susan Atkins Thomas of South Hill, and Elizabeth Atkins Collins of Lynchburg.

Graveside services for Mr. Atkins will be held tomorrow, July 8, at 11 a.m. at the family cemetery with Masonic Rites.

The family will receive friends this evening, July 7, from 7:00 until 8:30, at Powell Funeral Home, and other times at the home of his daughter, Nancy and J.E. Lacks, 7099 L.P. Bailey Hwy., Halifax.

Robert Lee Cunningham Jr.

Robert Lee Cunningham Jr., 76, of 2234 Sandy Beach Road, South Boston, died July 2, 2004 at The Woodview.

Mr. Cunningham was born in Halifax County on September 22, 1927, the son of Robert Lee Cunningham Sr. and Mary Medley Cunningham, and was married to the late Augusta Dance Cunningham. He was a member of Dan River Bethel Baptist Church.

Survivors include three sons, David Cunningham and wife, Pamela, of Baltimore, Md., Jerry Cunningham and wife, Loretta, and Tony Cunningham, both of South Boston; one sister, Alease Lipscomb of Baltimore; two brothers, Richard Cunningham and John Moses Cunningham, both of Baltimore; four grandchildren, Brittany Cunningham of South Boston, Adrian Cunningham, Ashley Moore and Pamela Bailey, all of Baltimore; one great-grandchild, Chase Hudson of Baltimore. Mr. Cunningham was also preceded in death by one brother, Frank Cunningham.

Funeral services will be held tomorrow, July 8 at 1 p.m. at Dan River Bethel baptist Church with the Rev. James L. Thomas officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the Chapel of Jeffress Funeral Home this evening, July 7, from 7 until 8, and other times at the home.

Minnie Kate Walker Redd

Minnie Kate Walker Redd, 99, of South Boston died July 4, 2004 in The Woodview.
Mrs. Redd was born December 24, 1904, in Pittsylvania County the daughter of the late James Whitfield Walker and the late Minnie Lee Arthur Walker and was married to the late A.C. Redd. The was a member of Riceville Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be held today, July 7 at 11 a.m. at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Bruce Hagy and Marion H . Davis officiating. Burial will follow in Halifax Memorial Gardens.

Survivors of Mrs. Redd include five daughters, Velora R. Moore and Bonnie R. Snow, both of Halifax, Frances R. Hawker of Sutherlin, Virginia R. Strader of Pelham, N.C. and Betty R. Miller of South Boston; four sons, James Redd and Amoes Redd, both of Lusby, Md., Herman Redd of Smith Mountain Lake and Wray Redd of South Boston; 23 grandchildren and 43 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Redd was also preceded in death by a son, Frank W. Redd.

Leonia Henry Thompson

Leonia 'Pig' Henry Thompson, 87, of 2096 Beulah Road, Nathalie died July 4, 2004 at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Mrs. Thompson was born in Pittsylvania County on September 22, 1916, the daughter of the late Inman Henry and Madella Fitzgerald Henry, and was married to the late John Willis Thompson. She was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Marjorie Coleman of Nathalie and Virginia Banks of Newark, N.J.; one son, Inman Thompson of Hillside, N.J.; one sister, Arsia Barksdale of Chester, Pa.; one brother, Herman Henry of Java; 17 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mrs. Thompson will be held Friday, July 9 at 1 p.m. at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Java with the Rev. Ralph L. Watkins officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the home.

Charlie Sanford Tillotson Jr.

Charlie Sanford 'C.S.' Tillotson Jr., 72, of Bullock, N.C., husband of Etta Jane Matthews Tillotson, died July 5, 2004 in Oxford, N.C.

Mr. Tillotson was born in Buffalo Junction. He was retired from Louisiana Pacific Lumber Company.

Funeral services will be held today, July 7, at 11 a.m. at Rock Spring Baptist Church where he was a member, with burial to follow in the church cemetery.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Tillotson is survived by two daughters, Vickie Poole of Omega, and Susan Annette Tillotson of Raleigh, N.C.; one son, Charlie Preston 'Chuck' Tillotson of Clarksville; his stepmother, Irene H. Tillotson, of Stovall, N.C.; two sisters, Clara Matthews of Henderson, N.C. and Ruby Smith of San Diego, Calif; two brothers, William Chesley Tillotson of Henderson and Douglas M. Tillotson of Kansas City, Mo.; five grandchildren; one great-grandson and two step-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends prior to the service from 9:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. in the church fellowship hall.

Bonnie Gail Crowder

Bonnie Gail Crowder, 45, of Detroit, Mich., formerly of Halifax County died July 3, 2004 in Detroit.

Ms. Crowder was born in Halifax County on May 4, 1959, the daughter of Mary Crowder Royal. She was a member of Owens Grove Baptist Church and was employed by Com Cast Cable Co. in Detroit.

Survivors include two sons, Kevin Crowder and Tyler Crowder, both of Detroit; her mother, and stepfather, James Royal Sr. of Detroit; four brothers, Calvin Crowder of Virgilina, Alvin Crowder, Stanley Crowder and Ronnie Crowder, all of Detroit; two stepbrothers, James Royal Jr. of Detroit and Howard Royal of
Ky; and a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Crowder of Virgilina.

Funeral services for Ms. Crowder will be held tomorrow, July 10 at 2 p.m. at Owens Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. John Leigh officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family is receiving friends at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Crowder, 2021 Virgilina Road, Virgilina.

Roger Scott Seamster

Roger Scott Seamster, 47, of Conway, S.C., died July 6, 2004 in Charleston, S.C.
Mr. Seamster was born in Lunenburg County the son of Stokley Owen Seamster Sr. and the late Virginia Talbott Seamster Clay. He was a truck driver for New South, Inc., and was formerly employed by Advance Auto.

Surviving in addition to his father of Gladys, is his wife, LeMoyne Seamster of Conway; one daughter, Amanda Hudson and husband, John, of Gladys; two stepsons, Timothy Switzer and Matthew Switzer, both of Roanoke; four brothers, Stokley Owen Seamster II of Mesa, Ariz., Danny L. Clay of Halifax, Dennis Clay of Brookneal, Donald Clay of Clover; four sisters, Ida Honyoust of Halifax, Dorothy Horta of Brookneal, Penny Milton of Gladys and Debra Clay of Brookneal; and his mother-in-law, Betty Ankrom of Conway.

A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, July 17 at 1925 Marshall Mill Road in Gladys.

Alice LaFon Collis Agnew

Alice LaFon Collis Agnew, 85, of Washington Park, N.C. died July 3, 2004 in Beaufort County Nursing Home.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. July 24, in Brown Chapel at Saint Peter’s Episcopal Church. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 on July 23, at the home of her sister-in-law, Nancy Collis, Washington, N.C.

Mrs. Agnew was born March 30, 1919, in Ormond Beach, Fla. the daughter of the late Virgil Gibney Collis and Elizabeth Simrall Collis and was married to the Rev. David Thompson Agnew, who preceded her in death. She was an artist.

Survivors include six children, David Thompson Agnew of Blacksburg, Dr. Josephine Collis Agnew of Kirksville, Mo., Elizabeth Barrington Agnew, Christopher Bleakley Agnew, both of Washington, N.C., Virgil Gibney Agnew of Corvallis, Oreg., and Mary Bartow Agnew of Marietta, Ga.; one sister-in-law, Nancy Collis of Washington; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Mrs. Agnew was also preceded in death by one grandson, Jess Randall Grosser; one sister, Josephine Collis More; and a brother, Mark Gibney Collis.

William Len Bane

William Len Bane, 46, of Scottsburg, died Saturday, July 10, 2004 at his home.

He was the son of Melvin William Bane and Christine Womack Bane.

He was a member of the Dan River Baptist Church and was a former employee of the Halifax County School System.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 13, at 11 a.m. at the Dan River Baptist Church with the Rev. Doug Gibson and the Rev. Melvin Bradshaw officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the Powell Funeral Home on Monday from 7:00-8:30 p.m. and at other times at the home of his parents at 1031 Temple Hill Road, Scottsburg.

Mr. Bane is survived by: his children, Laura Kathleen Bane of Halifax and Timothy Len Bane and his wife Sharon of Crystal Hill; their mother, Vicky Beverly Bane of Halifax; his parents, Melvin W. and Christine W. Bane of Scottsburg; a sister, Theresa Bane Garland of South Boston; two grandchildren, Makayla Grace Trent and Andrew Blake Trent, both of Crystal Hill; a niece, Courtney Rena Garland of South Boston; and a nephew, Casey Dalton Garland of South Boston.
